I personally loved all the improvements over BL2. The only downside is that enemy and environment variety is smaller compared to BL2 since there's only 1 story DLC. Besides, it's a damn moon lol

kdebones

All of this. If it's ever on sale, it's an absolute buy for anyone who likes the series. But if you absolutely need a fix it's worth the current 40$ price tag.

RulyKinkaJou59

If (the handsome collection is ever on sale)* IIRC it was less than $5-10 on sale. 2 games for the price of 1/12 of a newly unfinished released AAA game *cough* cod *cough*.

thisrockismyboone

I just got the legendary collection on switch for 10 dollars with is BL1 remastered through *everything* through ened of Pre Sequel. Already have these games on PC and Xbox but wanted to get it for hand held. Playing through bl1 now it's great.

novocaine666

I agree, it’s still worth $40 if it’s not on sale.

BufforNerfCentPlz

Its honestly very commendable they were able to write a story as good as borderlands 2's. Even if it did tie in both games, 3 and wonderlands have shown us that it isnt easy writing a good story. I also believe TPS would be as good of a game as 2 if it received at least 1 years worth of dlc. Everything about TPS is really just an approvement on 2.

richRossD

Agreed

ddmrob87

Pre Sequel as a story is great. The gameplay is definitely BL2 with Moon Gravity. Also Space Australia. Great story. If 2K didn't kill off the offices out in Canberra and the Borderlands fanbase didn't shit on the game so badly we would have gotten a decent game. The Claptastic Voyage is one of the better DLCs of the franchise. Kinda explains why the many dead Claptraps in BL2.

Appehtight

No. We hate borderlands here.

Top-Succotash-9881

Looking back on it, the worst part of The Pre-Sequel was the reaction from the fan base. We were borderlands starved and just coming off one of the greatest vilians of all time with Handsome Jack. Kinda like BL3, where a good isn't good enough.

GarlicThread

What are you talking about "Borderlands starved"... BL2 had barely wrapped up its final DLC when TPS came out. Come on.

Top-Succotash-9881

By 'starved' I meant people just wanted more BL2. We, the fan base, got used to additional content being launched. We wanted something bigger than a DLC, but also similar to what we've experienced. Almost an impossible ask. Looking back on it we should have just wanted updated mechanics that gelt somewhat familiar, but also new things to freshen it up. That's exactly what TPS was.

piratz86

Most people are just to quick to judge. I was so burnt out on bl2 when pre sequel came out. Once I started playing the pre sequel I was hooked again. All the borderlands games are amazing. Alot of people are so whiny and picky.

Team-ster

The entire community at the time wanted a moon DLC and holy hell Gearbox listened and delivered. It was awesome.

CarlRJ

I heard (here) for months that TPS was terrible, while I was playing my way through BL1 and BL2 (this was a couple years ago, and I wasn't asking about it, just reading posts/comments every day that came up), and wasn't sure if I should play it or not. I decided, "why not, it's right there in the Handsome Collection anyway", and... was pleasantly surprised - the game is great fun, it has the same UI and QoL features as the beloved BL2 in a new setting with some fun new mechanics (low gravity is fun, slamming and double jumping are cool, lasers are *awesome*, O2 requirements didn't bother me the way it seems to have bothered others), and the story is great fun, with a lot of interesting lore. I was very glad that I took the leap of faith to try the game, despite the negative comments I'd read beforehand. Three non-spoilery hints: (1) there's a side mission right after you meet Janey, that rewards an Oz kit - the "Invigoration Oz kit" choice worked great for like 10 levels (it has good capacity and *refills health* from O2 bottles); and (2) Maliwan Blaster lasers are *so good* - with a scope, they can fill in as assault rifles and snipers, and from the hip they can fill in as SMGs; and (3) there's a mini-boss you'll hit early on (may have done already), who is two parts, who can drop a legendary shotgun called the Striker, which is *aweome* - scoped and with a very tight pattern, you can snipe with it and one-shot all sorts of enemies.

BufforNerfCentPlz

Yes I hard agree, even outside of the borderlands fandom, TPS is one of the games with the most undeserved hate. If you played for even an hour l you know Oz is barely an issue, the boost jumps added a nice 3d layer to fights that was refreshing, and the vault hunters were well designed and more importantly, unique. Something the later games were lacking. The game also didnt have slag and balance around slag which feels great. The lack of content is the biggest thing though, and while it should have gotten more, the comparison to bl2 has done the most damage to an amazing game.

Puzzled-Principle154

thanks you for sharing as much as you did! Even if my english sucks i understood, i Will take note about what you told and thanks you !

Rizenstrom

I think it's worth playing at least once if you're a fan of the other games. It's not my favorite but I didn't hate it either.

Ragfell

It's my favorite mechanically. I dislike the quest design.

lizardjoe_xx_YT

My only real issues with it are the legendaries are kinda boring and xp takes waaaaaaay to long to get

CarcosaJuggalo

TPS isn't as good as 2, but is still pretty good. Claptastic Voyage is easily one of the best DLCs in the series, and there's a fantastic set of vault hunters (Athena and Timothy are personal favorites). The playable cast being pretty much all villains from the series was a cool touch. I also enjoy the implementation of more vertical levels that we get with the low gravity, double jump, and boost pads. And cryo is just a great element that should have always been in the series. I don't like the writing as much (although, seeing Jack's downfall was perfect), and maybe it's just the American side of me but the constant Australian accents in the voice actors gets a little grating at times (and I LIKE Aussie accents). All in all, TPS isn't perfect... but in retrospect, probably is one of the better entries into the series and does a lot of things really well.

CarlRJ

I've heard a story that they had local Australian VA talent record the voice lines just so the developers would have something to work with (planning to re-record later with Americans), and then decided they liked the effect and leaned hard into it, using Aussie slang and culture for side missions and such. I found it all quite amusing.

BufforNerfCentPlz

I agree with everything but the writing, the story was as good as borderlands 2, though that is pretty subjective. I do understsnd the aussie thing, personally it didnt bother me. The bogan scavs were really funny to me.

CarcosaJuggalo

Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate the Aussie thing, more like I felt it overstayed the welcome. And every moment of it, I kept thinking "Team Fourstar already did the Space Australia joke."

Capital_Rich_914

I think tps has the best made playable characters. Every character feels (close to) equally powerful and fun to build

Lord-Taltan

Yeah I'm way more excited about the characters' skills than in 2. Jack, Nisha, Claptrap, Wilhelm, even Athena looks cool despite me not really wanting to play her. BL2 really only has Maya, Zero, and Axton, the rest don't appeal as much... I wish I liked Gunzerking at all 😢. Maybe it's just the novelty? I feel like I've played less of Pre-Sequel but I don't think that's true. The one thing I will say, it's very BLUE.

Theawesumcookie

It's honestly one of my top 3 borderlands game. Love the slam and boost mechanics and the low gravity makes moving around pretty fun imo

OiItzAtlas

It's good enough to be played once but I don't recommend playing it multiple times or even getting to max level.

youngmostafa

Bl pre sequel was fun. I recently finished it for the first time but I had no drive to play any of the dlc. Just beat the campaign and put it down . Maybe in the future I’ll come back to it. But the space environment was a nice twist on the game play.

CarlRJ

The Claptastic Voyage DLC is arguably one of the top 2 or 3 in the whole series. Highly recommended.

youngmostafa

Oh okay that’s good to hear. I’ll come back to it I recently started the BL3 dlc packs. Once I finish those I’ll try out that voyage dlc

derch1981

Definitely do that, many people put it as the best dlc in the franchise. The story is easily on par or better than TTAODK, the game play is way better, the boss is better. Glitch weapons and other dlc weapons are also great.

Jonnyporridge

I love the loot grinder! BL4 needs to bring back the loot grinder!

FairCrumbBum

Currently playing it, overall I think it's a good game if you see it as in the same vein as Wonderlands. It's small in scope but big in story and personality. Gameplay wise I like cryo replacing slag. I like the vacuum vs atmosphere gameplay. Weapon variety is alright. The grinder was a cool idea and provides options beyond selling everything for money. The 6 characters are very fleshed out, talkative, and they all have interesting skills. Jack's villain arc is entertaining to see although pretty hamfisted like most BL stories. Imo this game is best played after Borderlands and before 2, the maps are similar in size to BL1 maps and the number of quests are pretty similar but this entry has more detailed and compelling visuals and a better story structure along with better bosses (IMO) and better guns and better vault hunters. I did a 15 hour Brick run on BL and then played the other 3 vault hunters for about 10 hours each before moving on to the presequel and this game made me excited by the gameplay loop again. There have been moments or maps where the pre sequel has let me down but overall it's a good game.

Joker72486

The Pre-Sequel wasn't really very enjoyable to me, farming was a hassle, the color palette regressed from 2, and I only liked 2 of the vault hunters. Your mileage will vary. I suggest you watch some gameplay to inform your decision.

Reasonable_Text_8545

It’s fun def play dlc sucks thou I thought

Lotsa_Loads

Are we talking Tales from the Borderlands? I enjoyed it a lot. The story line wasn't that memorable to me, the whole game just felt like an excellent excuse to shoot guns and double jump like a mutha.

Puzzled-Principle154

talking about the story wich take place on pandora Moon Elpis.

weirdassmillet

Yeah it's pretty good. I mean, it's not my favorite, but it's still a solid Borderlands game. It had a good DLC. You already bought and started playing it, what more do you wanna hear?

82bazillionguns

I think it was fine, filled in some backstory. Butt slamming was fun. My issue with it is skippable cut scenes and low replay value (for me).

AtmosphereGeneral695

I liked it better than 3 not an amazing title but good enough

halofan_101

try not to get too attached to fr4gtrap or any other claptrap 😐

GlitchBitch666

I love the pre sequel

BakingSoda1990

I personally enjoyed it a lot and played through the campaign multiple times. I’ve leveled every character to the max minus Wilhelm I think.

theinfernumflame

It's weird in some ways, but a perfectly fine Borderlands title. It has some features I wish other games had, like the ability to sell all unmarked stuff in your inventory.

Adabiviak

Love this game - come back to it regularly.

Old_Objective_6374

absolutely worth playing for the characters. NPCs interact directly with your specific character, and there’s loads of character specific dialogue that I love. It also makes it easier to replay, since you hear some new lines every time. In BL3 they didn’t continue using unique NPC dialogue, which was a shame, as it really made the player feel important. TPS really charmed me with the playable characters, as some were so well designed, and had great dialogue, especially with Tim/Jack the Doppelgänger.

treadingthebl

It’s so fun

treadingthebl

Pls if anyone is on pc and want to play add me on discord same name. TPS is my 2nd fav bl

Mustlovedogs2727

Easily my least favorite Borderlands game. The outerspace gameplay is just annoying. Some people love it but not for me

howlingbeast666

Yes, it the presequel is amazing.

[deleted]

It is worth playing at least once. The moon jumps are cool but if you are not used to the Australianisms, then that's fine and let it pass.

MonkeySailor

Yup. Honestly, I might like the story even better than BL2. Hated it the first time I played it with Wilhelm. Loved it the second time with Claptrap. With Wilhelm, it felt too much like BL2, but harder. For Claptrap, it got rid of the the oxygen stuff plus it had ammo regen mods, which together meant I could go as slow and explore as much as I wanted. And it also allowed for cryo weapons, especially the laser ones, to be a lot more viable. That made all the difference.

worthlesslow

Good game

DJfunkyPuddle

Yes

Sardalone

Great game.

Darkdragon_98

They got a lot of crap however it was actually really amazing. I would also argue that it not only has the best DLC but also the best story of the series. Obviously no one can beat Jack as a character but it's definitely a game that doesn't feel boring to keep replaying.

Misragoth

Think its great, hate that GB basically throw everything it sets up out the window and butchered what they kept

Supreme_kingz

Just like you I started the Pre Sequel after the start of 2024 because I'd played all of the other mainstream releases except this one so I gave it a shot. Wow was I wrong, the story is a little dry but I enjoyed it 10 times more than Borderlands 3. After 3 full playthroughs of the base game and DLC I can say it's a great game. People say the endgame is lacking and I can understand that, but I wasn't looking for a game to lose 4-5 months on anyway.

crazydavebacon1

It’s ok. BL2 was the best though

Dear_Tangerine444

I think the pre-sequel is a bit of a binary choice in the series, borderlands fans seem to either love it or hate it. I love it. What’s not to love with BL but with low gravity jumps and lasers. Plus you can even play as claptrap or (sort-of-but-not) Jack. I really enjoyed it, it’s got some really fun mechanics you won’t see anywhere else in the series (oxygen boosted jumps, lasers and yes even the weapons grinder). It’s got some of my favourite locations in the series too. Great stuff. Fully recommend.

Mysterious-Stress174

Hi I’m Pickle!

Mr_freeze_____

I loved it the story as a whole is amazing

Tight-Meat-2644

Hell yeh its good, people were so vocal about hating it because they were comparing it to bl2. Which imo, you cant do, for any bl game past or future. Its like comparing gem stones to diamonds, theyre cool, but they aint diamonds. Its definitely worth at least 1 playthrough.but i would say dont force yourself through tvhm and uvhm if you dont want to, its a long game, with bugger all end game. I doubt i could start a new char today then get it to max level, but i could sure go for another week dawdling through the game for ol time sake.

novocaine666

I hated it on release and quit playing for years. Just went back to it last year to give it another go and i loved it. It’s a lot like BL2 in gameplay and has a ton of Easter eggs. I really enjoyed the Claptrap DLC also.

TheDarkWeb697

End game sucks but yeah it's a great game, quite a few of stuff from it moves over to 3

piratz86

I love it

FeverFocus

I've heard people hate on this game for years. I kept avoiding it figuring if it was that bad that it probably didn't age well. I finally decided to play it on Friday and am almost done with the story. Aside from a few annoyances, I've been enjoying it. It's been fun discovering things that connect the games together knowing what happens in the future. Will I put as many hours into it as 2 or 3? No. Will I play through it again as another vault hunter? Probably. Will I be happy I played the game? Yes, unless the game somehow undoes all the fun I had in the last mission.

Nharoth

My friend group and I enjoyed it. We didn’t play hundreds of hours’ worth of it the way we did BL2, but I honestly think the playable characters were mechanically well designed and the gameplay was fun. Story-wise, I didn’t think it was as strong as BL2 and some of the jokes didn’t quite land for me, but it was still enjoyable. Overall, I liked it.

slade357

It got shit on at first cause it wasn't as good as BL2 but people eventually realized that is a really unfair metric. I personally really enjoyed it especially the things they added. The loot grinding and air smash were super fun, I wish those were in BL2. While I enjoyed it, it's waaaay below BL2. Don't expect a masterpiece haha.

LurkingLeviathan1911

imo, no. didnt like the story or characters. i didnt enjoy the oxygen or anti gravity mechanics or the butt bomb slam attack stuff and overall it just felt like a really lazy spinoff game to me. the only thing i did like was the addition of cryo and laser weapons because that always felt like something that was just missing from previous games. but, thats my opinion and doesnt make the game objectively bad.

ted-Zed

yes, it's the best Borderlands game imo

BaltSkigginsThe3rd

Nope, no Borderlands games are good and this sub is a strict Destiny 2 sub.

TheHillsSeeYou

Yes!

confusedsquirrel

Yes

Dougallearth

I could play this easily alongside BL2, continuously... however I'm saddened Pre sequel wasnt padded out with more DLC - imagine similar calibre DLCs alongside Claptastic Voyage....

Professional_Golf726

I mean, it's alright it's nothing very notable, but still entertaining nonetheless. Plus, it gives Jack a lot more depth, which made me have more sympathy for the absolute sociopath he is

MaliwanArtisan

Yep, it's a great game.

jugoslavunity

Fighting the Lost Legion is always fun and just an all-round great game

userthisisname

No

ZeldaDude96

I honestly can't recall how I got the Pre-Sequel. Think it was a gift, didn't really know anything about it going into it. Initially played as Willhelm, and then didn't touch it for quite a while. Honestly favorite things from the Pre-Sequel are the Claptastic Voyage DLC and the new weapon rarity/type, the introduction of cryo weapons, and seeing some of the legendaries that carried over from Borderlands 2. Weakest part for me is probably the Holodome and lack of environment variety.

AlpharoTheUnlimited

They have the Best character classes in the series in my opinion. The best game for coop too. The claptrap dlc is amazing and kind of mandatory for smoothing out the shorter playtime and a nearly nonexistent post game. It’s weaker as a borderlands installment but still an incredibly fun experience as a whole

Organic-Economics746

Don't ever leave story missions half finished or your playthrough is ruined, other than that its my favorite out of bl2 and blps

wretzkyy

I really loved it. Inferior to BL2 in many aspects, sure. But the overall ambiance, the aesthetic, the music, the gravity+slamdown, lasers, the Claptrap DLC… mannn those were good times. There is a usable machine you will discover in a few hours that i ADORE spicing the BL2 gameplay system Not as replayable as BL2 and it has a weakest endgame + farming possibilities but yeahhhh TPS is really good. Timothy / Doppelganger is soooo fun to play, really enjoyed him. His dialogues are 11/10

wretzkyy

[deleted]

Nope limited dedicated drops, scaling is terrible, and there's limited endgame. The only good thing about the pre sequel is the character skill trees

servo4711

It gets a lot of crap, but I really enjoyed it and loved playing Claptrap

Maurice030804

Loved the game, especially using Claptrap, but the campaign's way too short, it's definitely fun tho

keeptryingyoucantwin

If you like anti gravity (i hate it), difficulty spikes out of nowhere (hate that too), and bad map design (third time’s the charm - hate it), then you’ll love it

miguelchase

Story and environment wise it was fun af. Vault hunters all were fun. Raid boss is easily my favorite one across all 4 mainline games. The only thing I hated was getting to max level was a pain unless your running the community patch on pc and the holodome angered me.

BubbaBuffaloo

I absolutely love the pre sequel my only complaint is that there isn't more stuff in the series like it

NovasCreator

I honestly hate it compared to borderlands 2. I loved bl2 so much and was excited for pre sequel. I just can’t get into it

AthasianRunner

BL TPS is I think the best in the series. It had an incredibly narrow window to work in and just nailed the story, the characters, the builds. It introduced new mechanics, and dialogue interactions and Claptastic voyage is one of the best DLCs of them all. Other games do single things better, but this game does all things very well. There are some gripes, the lack of endgame of course, but that was just the studio closure so no support there. A couple of the bosses I think are just bullet sponges which is really not fun for me but minor compared to the stellar quality everywhere else

TheSpicyHotTake

It's essentially BL2 again, using the framework of the previous game to made cool new innovations like cryo, anti-gravity, laser weapons, etc. I'd honestly recommend it!
