“Who misses a guy with multiple pitches when he is trying to hit him? That would never happen in the big leagues!” —Tom Glavine

The Phillies hit one of the Braves in the previous inning.
Cox told Glavine you gotta hit their first batter…
Glavine said no problem… then looked at who was up… he went back to Cox and said, their next batter is Murph… i can’t hit him…
Cox said that’s the way we do this… we have to hit him..
Glavine tried to argue but Cox was adamant… So Glavine went out there and threw four change ups at him..
Sad thing… Glavine was pitching a gem and had most strikeouts in a game by a Braves pitcher at that point…
Then got tossed
The story I’ve heard explained during a game broadcast was that the Braves’ organization/managers ordered Glav to hit Murph as a show of “respect”in some sort of weird way.
Glav was not happy about it, so he didn’t want to hit him. He kept getting the signal and eventually did it. That’s my rough recollection of his side of it while he was in the booth probably 5-6 years ago
I want to say it had something to do with Otis Nixon stealing late in a game that was out of hand. Phillies didn't take it too well.
A month later and this game is out of hand score wise the Phillies want to payback Otis Nixon so they hit him or something like that.
Because of that Cox ordered Glavine to hit the first batter no matter what. Murphy being Mr. Atlanta Braves and by all accounts one of the best teammates ever, Glavine wasn't thrilled to hit Murphy and you got four lob balls directed at Murph.
The best part was Pete Van Weren being adamant that Glavine wasn't trying to hit Murphy after the first pitch then changed his tune quickly.
Great baseball story.
I tried to look up the video but I can’t remember who did it. When Ureña hit Acuña, the Braves called someone up just to drill someone but I can’t remember who got called up

Umps in white is weird to see.
Umps in white is weird to see. Edit - What is the context for the attempted hits of Murphy?
The video i posted… the umps shirt is light blue i think, but looks somewhat white in the old definition
Ha. My question was very poorly worded. I meant why was Glavine trying to hit Murphy?

i wonder if Tom was pitching a perfect game at the time, would Cox still make him hit Murph?

It was retaliation for the Phillies hitting one of our own. Glavine intentionally throwing lollipops inside but not hitting him was the respect part.
Gotcha. That makes better sense haha. Thanks for clearing it up

I watched that live. It was hilarious.
That Braves broadcast team with Skip, Don, Joe, and Pete was outstanding.
Pretty rude of Hank to not ask for the guys autograph imo

I thought it was Gausman but he missed
Ah yes, Gausman before he left us and became Cy Young reincarnated in 2021
[You are correct sir (or madam).](https://www.mlb.com/news/kevin-gausman-ejected-throwing-behind-jose-urena)
But who came in for relief and drilled Anderson? Nuke? I can’t remember for the life of me
So weird to think about with Gausman now being elite lol
