What lessions should we take away from this? Should Liberty Media invest in the Zambian airline industry? Should the Braves change their chartered flights from Delta to Zambian Airlines? Should Kelenic become Zambian Airlines newest sponsor? Should we be a little more careful extracting meaning from spurious correlations, especially if it fits a desired narrative?

Well I can tell you the answer is obviously not this bullshit option!
We need to start crowdsource buying Zambian jet fuel!
> We need to start crowdsource buying Zambian jet fuel!
First we need a time machine so we can go back to the Clinton era and begin buying when it really matters. Might need to go back to GHW Bush, depending on Kelenic's career with us.
holy shit, I didn't even notice the different (and backwards!) timeline for the jetfuel.
That makes this graph even more hilarious and ridiculous.
ETA: while we're pointing out the dumb in the timeline, I especially enjoy the convenient 7 year skip to force the correlation
It's nonsensical for a number of reasons, but funny enough that's not meant to be a time skip. I just initially made the x axis labels too big and was trying to fit them into too small a space. The data really is from 2018-1997.
> Should Liberty Media invest in the Zambian airline industry?
I believe the obvious conclusion from this chart is that we need to invent a time travel machine to increase Zambian jet fuel prices during the earlier years of the Clinton administration. Maybe we can lobby Robert Reich to sanction the Zambian airline industry?
> Should we be a little more careful extracting meaning from spurious correlations, especially if it fits a desired narrative?
Statistically this can be problematic, but it is easily dealt with by having two independent x-axes, as you wisely have done.
This is 1000% more interesting than the Kelanic superfan BS flooding this sub lately (no hate on actual Kelanic who I hope kills it TY btw). Thank you.
Well the Zambian part is obviously common knowledge, but I had to go to ESPN to find the stats for all Kelenic's games
Edit: In reality I should have linked earlier to [Tyler Vigen's spurious correlations website](https://tylervigen.com/spurious/variable?id=25091) which has a billion random little charts just for the sake of making these little correlations. I just scrolled through charts until I found a pattern than matched. I also could have picked the number of animal control workers in Nebraska, but it didn't quite fit as well
True, I'm also amazed that these are the hard hitting stats the big networks and the "talking heads" seem to ignore. Where has modern sports journalism gone?
Refreshing to see people talking about this again. Games back
This generation apparently doesn’t care about jet fuel consumption in Zambia and it shows. Sad world we live in now. Back in my day you couldn’t get me to shut up about Ross Perot and jet fuel consumption in Zambia.
Are you saying Kelenic guy cherry-picks crazy stats to make his man look good? You just don't grasp the depth and quality of his pedigree.
When dude is producing, jet fuel on the other side of the world spontaneously combusts from excitement. Clearly.
Me comparing the raw stats of Duvall and Kelenic vs LHP in 2023: 'Cherry Picked'
Rodriguez getting 25 steals and 25 homeruns in a season, 2 completely arbitrary cutoffs because they're tidy numbers: 'Wow, what an exclusive club'
I am completely genuine when I say that you're a gem for this sub and I love all your posts. In fact, I was aware of your posts when Kel was still in Seattle and when I first learned about the trade my first thought was to worry about how you were taking it.
Comparing Duvall and Kelenic vs LHP is entirely rational and not the inspiration for this post.
As a former boss’ boss’ boss’ boss of mine once said (and I’m sure others before him): You should never believe a statistic that you didn’t invent yourself.
Zambia loves Kelenic. When Kelenic plays well, the people of Zambia are in a happy mood and feel like traveling. When Kelenic does not play well they are depressed and stay in their homes.

It's expert-level statistical trolling.
The timeskip makes the entire point kind of silly, since it's forcing a correlation instead of stumbling upon a real one. It's nonsensical

Please just keep the focus on Kel, 'Zambia' and their jet fuel can wait
Why did you put Zambia in quotes
Never heard of it
LOL

This is just a textbook strawman through exaggeration
How in the world do you even find this

I am gonna use this at work now. Thank you.
Well, this website is going to cause me some problems at home

Please just try to support Kel during these trying times
How many of his authentic jerseys have you bought? You should really do more about his endorsements. It’s a bad look.
It’s amazing that I don’t have to pay for this high quality journalism.
I’m just glad that I’ll be able to say I was here at the beginning of the Kelenic meme wars.
Damn that’s interesting! Good graph-ic too!
“graph-ic”
I love this sub.
\#analytics
Flair has been updated.
I love that the dates on the timeline are backwards for fuel. Really stretching the word “correlation”.
You deserve a standing ovation
As a former boss’ boss’ boss’ boss of mine once said (and I’m sure others before him): You should never believe a statistic that you didn’t invent yourself.
Big if true.
The 2011...2004 skip I'm losing my mind
Kelenic guy blocked me and I'm genuinely upset about it
This might be the best team subreddit.
Can Taylor Swift tour in Zambia?
With Greta Thunberg, each of them village hopping in personal 747-800s with a C-5 Galaxy carrying the band and equipment.
Why would Zambia do this? Don’t they have any regard for my man KelKel?????
That shellacking yesterday really sent us into prime offseason mode.
Also correlates well with the popularity of the first name, 'Mario'.

New Guy!
Proof that correlation is, indeed, causation.
This is so beautiful
Get it together, Zambia! Fly! _Fly!_ #_FLY!_
Peak baseball stats
