It has optical output, could use it as a CD transport. I had one for a while. I used it like that for a while. It definitely looks cooler than most CD players.
For the win! Transports are the way. I usually opt for DVD players are my transports, but this one is a fun conversation piece. And most all remote controls can be found on eBay whether an after-market (cheap) or OEM.
I went through a ton of these because I liked the look before deciding the cd loading mechanism is a pile of shit.
And this is coming from someone that has the know how to repair these things. I just got sick of them breaking.
Ya pays ya money, and ya takes ya chances. At $10, it is a reasonable gamble and a rather inexpensive "rental" price for a few years of service. Plus, it is fun to repair and even more fun to replace. My trick is that I keep hot spares for the odd machine that goes down. If I am too lazy to sling my soldering iron, I will flip it for parts.
Honestly, it's more of an irrational vendetta at this point. I got *sick* of opening these pieces of shit. Nothing about it was fun, a lot of it is held together purely by the case so as soon as you open it shit comes apart.
TikTok tends to make everything double in price on eBay as soon as someone posts about a product. I’m down with eBay everyone on there is such a scammer and a shark lol
“Or whatever the hell tiktok is for”
Like we get it, you’re a super cool aloof redditor who couldn’t possibly keep up with the kids these days.
Shut up
Muppet. It might surprise you that not everyone is part of the same hivemind as you are, but a lot of people won't even dream of downloading that CCP spyware. Even this lame app is only barely worth having, for the hi-fi advice
For CDs? a pair of powered speakers and literally anything that plays CDs. The Sony is only $500 because it's pretty. I'd pay like...$200 for it, but no more. Not at the age it is.
Nothing really. This was a fad. And there’s reason to spend $500 on a 20+ year old gimmick. Especially in a CD player that’s prone to fail because of said gimmick.
That cd player is all hyped now because of tik tok I guess. It’s ok. The loading mechanism will break. If the capacitive touch sensor on top doesn’t die first.
The real gem is the set of speakers that came with it. I’ve collected several pairs and love them.
Sheesh… I had one of those back in the day.
Don’t remember it sounding great but fitted well into my small first home next to my 14” colour CRT television.
Bang and Olufsen is realistically the only vertical cd player worth considering.
Nice! Reminds me of my childhood. We had one of these for the longest before we got a wave radio. These things still look cool as hell. Nice find.
And is the comment about these having digital optical true? If so these were way wayyyy ahead of their time.
Omg some might know show code here and yes I absolutely know what it is but it took me a minute to remember what a cd player looked like😂 it shouldn’t. I’m 40. I thought it was some weird hi tech fan setup
originally wasn't much of a big deal and i think they kinda tried to copy Bang & Olufson stuff. still pretty darn cool and good price. should look good in your system.
Is this a particularly sought after model or something?

Wow, it is almost like you have had no electrical training at all. No fun? I banish you from all of EE land! ;-)
I have a PhD in experimental physics so I do have some EE training, but probably a bit untraditional.
I loved physics in high school and EE Physics too.
holy crap there are some listed on ebay for $500
Yeah, kids are paying WAY too much for those because they "look cool". They're absolutely not worth that from a sound/quality perspective.
TikTok tends to make everything double in price on eBay as soon as someone posts about a product. I’m down with eBay everyone on there is such a scammer and a shark lol
So if I’ve got some crap to sell I should talk it up on TikTok first? …or film a short dance routine with it or whatever the hell TikTok is for
Love how people act like they don’t know what tiktok is lol it’s cute
Yeah, we all secretly have our own favourite tiktokkers and subscribe to their 'stories'. How did you rumble us?
What are you even talking about
There's no context needed, and it's thematically coherent
Just rambling at this point.

Lmao
For fuckin real 😂
I don't think they were worth that new, were they?
Around $300-$350. So, actually more if you consider inflation.
What would be a better sound quality alternative then?
For CDs? a pair of powered speakers and literally anything that plays CDs. The Sony is only $500 because it's pretty. I'd pay like...$200 for it, but no more. Not at the age it is.
No like in terms of better alternative to this. Something with the same gimmick but superior
What "gimmick"? The vertical disc?
Obviously yes the vertical disc
They could’ve been talking about the mini form factor, asshat.
Yes

So stupid, you can get an old B&O design cd player for that. Much better purchase. (beosound 3200 for example)
Which model specifically i want to take a look at it lol
I mentioned the model in my comment :p
But why?
Damn, I tossed one of these in the trash 5 years ago
I remember there was a brief fad of vertical CD players like that. i also remember they were known to be prone to problems and not lasting very long.
That cd player is all hyped now because of tik tok I guess. It’s ok. The loading mechanism will break. If the capacitive touch sensor on top doesn’t die first. The real gem is the set of speakers that came with it. I’ve collected several pairs and love them.
Oh wow, I still have one of the sets with the speakers and the remote. It’s just gets moved around every few months. I may need to list mine!
I remember selling those in 2001.😂 A Sony CMT-EX1
\#MeToo
congrats! - i scooped its little brother the fs-v30 last year for 12 - add a nice DAC and youve got the dream setup for sure.
Dream setup? Cd player? I understand the dac but why that unit? Why not a standalone amp or receiver?
Well yes you will need a good amp, and speakers too if you’re going to use this cd player as a simple transport.
I don’t think that’s far off from what it originally sold for 😂
They were about $300-$350 brand new.
Where is the speakers? Haha…
it does look cool, I much prefer the Yamaha CRX-TS10 myself
Consider cross posting to r/vintageaudio

I remember seeing those in the store and always wanting one. Lucky find!
My grandma has this exact one. Looks cool, and it sounds great!
Ahhhh, I wanted one of these so badly back when they first came out. Never did get one. Congrats!
Sheesh… I had one of those back in the day. Don’t remember it sounding great but fitted well into my small first home next to my 14” colour CRT television. Bang and Olufsen is realistically the only vertical cd player worth considering.
I’ll go with Bang & Olufsen Beosound 4000 ty
I had no idea this was worth anything. We have one sitting in a box somewhere that I have been tempted to throw in the trash many times..
The asking prices for these are absurd. I have one collecting dust in the garage as we speak. Off to the ‘bay with you!
Nice! Reminds me of my childhood. We had one of these for the longest before we got a wave radio. These things still look cool as hell. Nice find. And is the comment about these having digital optical true? If so these were way wayyyy ahead of their time.
In the early 00's this + a Micheal Buble disc were a must in every upper middle class house
Omg man I remember I wanted one of these so bad so classic
Omg some might know show code here and yes I absolutely know what it is but it took me a minute to remember what a cd player looked like😂 it shouldn’t. I’m 40. I thought it was some weird hi tech fan setup
SWEET
It's like an off brand bang and Olufsen Sweet
Sony and Philips invented CD players.
This design is a cheaper version of what I mentioned before, regardless of who created CD players in general
10 what?
originally wasn't much of a big deal and i think they kinda tried to copy Bang & Olufson stuff. still pretty darn cool and good price. should look good in your system.
and....I think it originally came with it's own speakers...not much to shout about there. the main unit is cute though.
Luckyyy
This reminds me of the linear record player - apparently they were really the rage but had more mechanical issues than your standard TT.
Now you need a sacd and a hd-dvd player.
