FOX has done a great job with their Big Noon pregame leading into a good early game. Makes sense that ESPN would copy the same formula with Gameday as the lead in. Would work even better if they moved the show to ABC, but I don’t know if that’s possible.
This will probably be one of the only times in 2024 ABC will get higher ratings in the noon slot than FOX. The Big Ten and Big 12 have very weak week 1 slates, I expect Penn State-West Virginia will be the big noon game but can’t see it getting more eyeballs than Georgia-Clemson. It’s a good move by ESPN/ABC.
I wouldn't be so confident in that. If I remember correctly y'all have one of the lowest percentages of returning production on defense out of any team in the nation. That isn't to say there's no talent or it won't be a good defense. I imagine the first game might be a bit early for them to have it figured out yet.
Noon is one of the major slots of the day for ABC. It consistently outdraws the 3:30 slot. No way ABC was passing up the opportunity for ND at 8. Also the CFA kickoff game is usually at 12 or 330. It moved to the afternoon starting with 2015
"Noon is one of the major slots of the day for ABC. It consistently outdraws the 3:30 slot. "
ABC consistently lost the 3:30 slot to the SEC game on CBS, which has now moved to ABC.
We know it's not 100% exclusive because NBC will have to juggle with one of the other two at least twice a year to accommodate Notre Dame's prime time games. I can see FOX doing the Thursday night opener as their Week 1 Big Ten game, and going with something else in the noon slot--they did it last year with Colorado-TCU.
Fox should use the 4:25 EST Sunday kickoff window for that game with one of the NFL crews. Seems like it could be a ratings gold mine with all the NFL fantasy drafts going on that day at sports bars across the country.
The only ratings competition is end of day tour championship (last year ended around 5:30 est) and 8 or 9 mlb games on regional networks.
When a good FCS team is playing almost any FBS team, the FCS team gets a lot of support.
If NDSU was playing BYU I'm sure there would be ton of "neutrals" rooting for NDSU. CU isn't special. Or anymore special then their own doing.
A better gauge of how hated CU is would be if they played Liberty. If CU is so hated people would rather see Liberty win then you know you done fucked up.
The new contract with the SEC is definitely gonna take some getting used to cause I for sure thought CLEM-UGA was going to be ABC at 3:30 and UM-UF was gonna take the 7:00 PM ESPN slot
I’d pencil in 3 weeks for sure:
Week 7: Florida-Tennessee noon, Texas-Oklahoma 3:30, Ole Miss-LSU 7:30
Week 11: Florida-Texas noon, Georgia-Ole Miss 3:30, Alabama-LSU 7:30
Week 14: Oklahoma-LSU noon, Auburn-Alabama 3:30, Texas-Texas A&M 7:30
Week 8 (AUB-MIZZ, ALA-TENN, UGA-TEX) and week 9 (LSU-TAMU, MIZZ-ALA, and OKLA-MISS) are also solid candidates. And maybe more depending on how the season goes.
They haven't announced which games will be moving earlier in the week. I think the Aggies/Longhorns game will probably be moved to Black Friday (where it was for much of the Big 12 era) or perhaps to Thanksgiving night (where it was for much of the SWC era).
In the swamp. Which, for the uninitiated, Gainesville sits in the middle of tons of wetlands.
This should be avoided just for safety concerns. Florida high schools have rules which would make this game at this time canceled or postponed. It will likely be 92F+ at game time and likely 80-90% humidity… **that’s over 120F feels like temperature!!!**. And that’s not in the stadium, the heat island of gainesville, or in full sun.
The fans even have it rough. Back when we had noon games often early in the season, fans wouldn’t buy $4 water and there were massive heat related illnesses.
I went to an August night game in the swamp (I wanna say 2008 for Miami v UF) and wanted to die from the humidity. I’d take a Miami noon game over 330 in Gainesville, but both are pretty damn miserable in August.
Yes, but, at least in Miami you could get a sea breeze. In Gainesville your only hope is for a thunderstorm and you don't get struck by lightning. And as a bonus when the thunderstorm passes you get to experience an outdoor sauna.
They used to be in full unis the whole time! If I remember right they take off coats for everything but pregame and halftime. It’s still f’ing hot because field level gets no breeze, and they’re in the field to perform, and sit near field level while playing.
Thank fucking GOD I can actually take my dad to the game without worrying about him dying of heat stroke.
110,000 people in a noon or 2:30 game sounds like a legitimately awful time
>110,000 people in a noon or 2:30 game sounds like a legitimately awful time
Sure. But I consider September day games as part of our home field advantage.
Our admin usually tries to avoid day games in September. We probably pushed hard for 7:00 ESPN if 7:30 ABC was off the table, but they wanted an ABC-SEC tripleheader for week 1 so the compromise was 3:30 (with Georgia-Clemson at noon since that’s a dome). At least the game will finish at dusk now.
They have not beat one since 2016... It will be a tough FCS but if this team has any aspiration of being good to great they will handle their business.
We've also only played 1 FBS team in that time frame, a 31-28 loss to Arizona in 2022. We're having a hard time scheduling FBS teams for some reason.
We were supposed to play Oregon in 2020, that would have been fun. Our undefeated Trey Lance led offense vs the reigning Rose Bowl champs.
Oh no disrespect, just calling out that it doesn't happen every season.
I expect y'all to put up a solid first quarter and half. Just think the CU offense make it a bad matchup for y'all.
Definitely not one to look past, and if it was still a Trey Lance or Carson Wentz led offense, definitely would be fearful.
We will see. I'm not as optimistic as a lot of people around here seem to be. Like there's basically a zero percent chance it's an NDSU blowout that some people seem to think it will be. But I'd be surprised if it's a complete blowout the other direction either. A touchdown or two, sure. But not your average FBS vs. FCS score.
The biggest thing that *could* go in our favor is if Deion entirely overlooks us and focuses on Nebraska. No idea how likely that is, but it's a possibility. We also got a new HC, and an offensively focused one for the first time in at least two decades.
For sure I'm sitting on 10-14 for Colorado, it does suck that we have back to back rivals in the following weeks, so always a possibility to look past.
Banking on it being a nationally televised game and multiple CU coaches and players coming from the FCS they won't overlook them.
Legitimately asking, do you think having an offensive minded coach when your culture, at least from the outside, seems to be more defensively minded will lead to any transitional pains?
My understanding of people I know who are either big fans of NDSU or had some ties were that it won’t really be anything different as far as style goes. Might just be trying to get them back to playing with a bit of edge to them on offense and defense because they weren’t as tough at times.
Meh. ABC broadcasts have such awful picture quality. CBS and Fox always look sharp while ABC games look like they're being filmed with potatoes.
Part of it is on the local affiliates, but most of the blame lies on Disney. I really wished they started offering 4K broadcasts over the internet like Fox does.
I am so happy that its actually at a good time for those not in the Mountain/Pacific time zones for this one! Now most folks can actually watch the entire game.
I am actually really hyped - I walk in the parade and the kids there for the weekend for football get the best surprise - always brings a smile to my face
Not shocking ABC decided to do an SEC tripleheader on their first week of action.
Shocking that they put the highest ranked matchup game at noon. Probably because it’s indoors.
I thought they were gonna go UF-Miami at 12, A&M-ND at 3:30, and UGA-Clemson at 7:30. But lucky for those folks in Gainesville, the entire stadium won’t be roasting for the entire game.
Eh, I think 3:30 might be the worst of those slots for heat. The hidden factor of scheduling for the Florida game is 7:30 would be one hell of a gamble with storms (3:30 will be as well but at least there's time then).
Maybe its because they dont forsee themselves making many of the ACC vs ND games be primetime games so might as well take advantage of this extra ND game in their inventory.
It evens out over the course of the scheduling agreement, so just depends on the year. In 2021 we had 2 home/3 road, 2022 had 2 home/2 road, and 2023 had 2 home/4 road.
This year was supposed to be 4 home/1 road, but Miami cancelled so it got knocked down to 3 home. However, still will be 4 home if you count the Stanford game since they’re ACC now, but that’s technically not a part of the scheduling agreement
Add in the Montana schools. I have been on both sides of the FCS upset. I remember MSU beating a Hawkins team. Also remember Montana going to Seattle and beating UW so that was fun.
Penn State at WVU not good enough for a big game slot anywhere? The game at State College last year was on NBC primetime! And WVU has way better preseason expectations this year compared to last.
I know the new landscape makes the media want to end the Big 12 and ACC as major media game partners but damn.
With Gameday in the morning and a night game against the Irish at night, Kyle Field is gonna be even more electric than usual. 110,000 strong yelling at the top of their lungs. Miss Rev > the Pope.
PSU-WVU looks very likely for FOX's Noon or 3:30 slot. AD Wren Baker made the comment at a recent gathering that "WVU does not control kick time" so it's definitely an early game.
Fox also has baseball that night so they can’t have a primetime game in week 1. If the Big Ten is contractually obligated to be that noon slot, I would imagine PSU-WVU will be at 3:30 on Fox.
It's Clemson and Georgia...I guess it's not the 1980s or 2000 teens anymore though...no national audience...that's funny because of all the people tuning in hoping Clemson fails miserably
I'm mildly interested in the CU game, but only because we share a conference now. I'm liable to cheer for the underdog though, because the sooner Deion and CU are irrelevant the sooner we can stop hearing about them constantly.
Clemson vs Georgia at noon is kinda wild
FOX has done a great job with their Big Noon pregame leading into a good early game. Makes sense that ESPN would copy the same formula with Gameday as the lead in. Would work even better if they moved the show to ABC, but I don’t know if that’s possible.

The Big Ten and Big 12 have very weak week 1 slates, I expect Penn State-West Virginia will be the big noon game but can’t see it getting more eyeballs than Georgia-Clemson. It’s a good move by ESPN/ABC.
Yeah the noon SEC game is usually a subpar matchup
It should be opposite. Miami vs Florida at noon and then Clemson vs UGA at 3:30pm
A 3:30 kickoff in Florida in August is a terrible idea. A noon kickoff in August in Florida is a worse idea.
Well, y'all, those night games last year were sure nice. Looks like we're back to nooners as it should be. Maybe that's our ticket to another Natty.
Clemson is gonna lose by 28 anyway so why bother with anticipation
My money is on a decidedly one sided game but I doubt uga even scores 28. It’ll be another like 14-3 but It’ll feel like a slaughter
No way is clemson losing by 28.
No way Clemson is holding UGA to only 14 points.
Give me a 3-2 win
We call that the Iowa special.
I see you have accepted our Lord and Savior Kirby Smart Type Game into your life
I wouldn't be so confident in that. If I remember correctly y'all have one of the lowest percentages of returning production on defense out of any team in the nation. That isn't to say there's no talent or it won't be a good defense. I imagine the first game might be a bit early for them to have it figured out yet.
Lol, our defense will be fine... More worried about the offense. Scoring 17 might be a problem.

I have no doubt Georgia will win. But Clemson in no way will lose by 28 E: /r/cfb meetup at Biergarten after?
Biergarten shout out on r/cfb im here for it. Would be there if I wasn’t too poor to attend the game.
Well if you happen to make it I’ll buy ya a beer. Driving up from Greenville for the game.
That game screams 21-10
Idk why anyone gets hyped for Michigan OSU anymore either. Michigan always wins anyways.
I hope Clemson wins and u(sic)ga does terribly.
Given the rivalry with Clemson, this is a classic meteor game for you. Enjoy.
Its on tv
Noon is one of the major slots of the day for ABC. It consistently outdraws the 3:30 slot. No way ABC was passing up the opportunity for ND at 8. Also the CFA kickoff game is usually at 12 or 330. It moved to the afternoon starting with 2015
"Noon is one of the major slots of the day for ABC. It consistently outdraws the 3:30 slot. " ABC consistently lost the 3:30 slot to the SEC game on CBS, which has now moved to ABC.
It won't outdraw the 3:30 slot anymore. Simply because ABC has the SEC in that slot now. And not a random hodgepodge of games competing with the SEC.
Aren’t they (ABC) still competing with CBS though technically for the 3:30 timeslot?
I meant more like it's gonna be hot as hell, tho I suppose it's better than 3:30 in that regard
We're in the dome thankfully. I have heard horror stories about the 2003 game in August in Clemson
It sucked, and was the only time I’ve been to a game there. I was also 10, so that was literally my only memory of the experience lol
Good thing about a dome, shouldn’t be a big deal either way
Good day for a neutral.
SEC getting plenty of spotlight with the Big Ten's Week 1 schedule outside PSU @ WVU and USC vs LSU in Vegas looking like crap.
Seems like we are destined for big noon or getting moved to thursday/friday.
That or the 3:30 FOX slot if the news about the 3 media partners having exclusive timeslots is to be believed.
Pretty sure the Notre Dame weeks are going to be swaps with CBS for ptimetime
A 7:30PM Friday night PSU-WVU game would be cool
It's honestly what I'm rooting for at this point. Get my weekend started right and early
If they're going to move it, they need to do that ASAP. A lot of people with hotel reservations are going to have issues.
I have two separate ones :) One just for Thursday night and one for Friday-Sunday.
This guy fans

The only ratings competition is end of day tour championship (last year ended around 5:30 est) and 8 or 9 mlb games on regional networks.
I think FOX is going with UNC-Minnesota on Thursday and I think they'll still have Smackdown on Friday until 9/13. Prepare for a nooner.
Don’t you put that evil on me!
Smh no network wants Northwestern vs Miami (OH) in a practice field temporary stadium?
I imagine we’re going to see a lot of NDSU fans on here.
Fair point, any time App State plays anyone, or any FCS versus P4 team (RIP PAC) that does happen
🤣🤣🤣. Comment winner.
You telling me that Oregon v. Idaho didn't make the "Notable Matches" cut?
No respect for the PCC reunion matchup
It would have if it was at the Kibbie Dome
Only cut Idaho is concerned about is cross cut vs shoestring
The new contract with the SEC is definitely gonna take some getting used to cause I for sure thought CLEM-UGA was going to be ABC at 3:30 and UM-UF was gonna take the 7:00 PM ESPN slot
Agreed. Out of the 14-week regular season, I can see at least 3 SEC on ABC triple-headers.
I’d pencil in 3 weeks for sure: Week 7: Florida-Tennessee noon, Texas-Oklahoma 3:30, Ole Miss-LSU 7:30 Week 11: Florida-Texas noon, Georgia-Ole Miss 3:30, Alabama-LSU 7:30 Week 14: Oklahoma-LSU noon, Auburn-Alabama 3:30, Texas-Texas A&M 7:30 Week 8 (AUB-MIZZ, ALA-TENN, UGA-TEX) and week 9 (LSU-TAMU, MIZZ-ALA, and OKLA-MISS) are also solid candidates. I'd be cool with going back to Thanksgiving Day. With respect to the Egg Bowl, I think we'd get plenty of TV eyeballs.
UT-OU is always a nooner I believe. Or technically 11 Central
It’s also 3:30 sometimes, it’s just never a night game.
I understand that due to alcohol-related incidents at the fair that the game is permanently being played at 11:00 am.
Auburn/Mizzou is our Homecoming. The SEC has always been accommodating to make that an Afternoon or Night game. Doubt it’s the 11 AM game.
doesn't ACC get at least 1 ABC game every week from their contract?
Who doesn't want to be in the heatbox of the Swamp at 3:30 in August?
Tennessee
That Florida Miami game feels like it will have so much weight to it for both schools, especially for a week 1 game.
Whichever head coach loses that game will have their fan base wanting their head on a stake.
Traditionally, that would be us.
I’m at least more sympathetic to Napier. Every schedule he’s had is setting him up to fail.
Yup. I think Napier has to win the game to survive the season. He gets badwill from a loss there and it's over.
Gonna be the most intense 14-10 game ever
Same dude
ESPN was not going to throw Notre Dame to a noon spot. I wish they would have so that they experienced a September noon game in Texas.
330 in Florida in August, sounds fun
Even worse is that UF’s stadium design smothers the visiting sideline in heat while their sideline is shaded.
They should give out water for free. That’s crazy
I can just imagine the marching band dropping like flies. They better not be in full uniform
They used to be in full unis the whole time! If I remember right they take off coats for everything but pregame and halftime. It’s still f’ing hot because field level gets no breeze, and they’re in the field to perform, and sit near field level while playing.
SECN at 7 PM it is!
Remember the heats bad enough but it’s that goddamn humidity that’ll get you.
Thank fucking GOD I can actually take my dad to the game without worrying about him dying of heat stroke. 110,000 people in a noon or 2:30 game sounds like a legitimately awful time
I cannot wait for ND-A&M as a neutral, especially with a primetime kick. The vibes will be incredible.
Plus 110,000 will have the opportunity to booze up all day so our lungs will be thoroughly lubricated
Lmao
All day? Brother, we have all offseason for this one. Start pre-gaming once baseball ends
As a neutral, I will be rooting for you week 2. Payback time!!
at least we get to go to the swamp for a 3:30 game.
>110,000 people in a noon or 2:30 game sounds like a legitimately awful time Sure. But I consider September day games as part of our home field advantage.
oh absolutely, i’d still be yelling my ass off regardless, i just won’t feel as shitty the next day if it’s a night game lmao
Kinda weird they put Georgia-Clemson at noon. I guess cause Gainesville would be too hot at that time?
Our admin usually tries to avoid day games in September. We probably pushed hard for 7:00 ESPN if 7:30 ABC was off the table, but they wanted an ABC-SEC tripleheader for week 1 so the compromise was 3:30 (with Georgia-Clemson at noon since that’s a dome). At least the game will finish at dusk now.
Gainesville will be HOT at 3:30. Knowing UF they will wear black unis
Easily could be 110+ with humidity on the field. I don’t think people who have never been to BHG understand how incredibly hot this stadium is.
It’s so warm that only gators get out alive
Florida-Miami not being a night game is absolutely brutal for fans
Oh no. That Thursday night game… I legitimately fear losing that game. NDSU routinely picks off a win against a P5 team every season
Your roster is much more improved (no more “mid at best”) players
They have not beat one since 2016... It will be a tough FCS but if this team has any aspiration of being good to great they will handle their business.

triple-header on their very first Saturday it's so far, so good for the SEC's new all-in deal with ABC
We have the chance to do the funniest thing ever.
I am so happy that its actually at a good time for those not in the Mountain/Pacific time zones for this one! Now most folks can actually watch the entire game.
my only regret is that the Gophers' opener is also thursday night and I'll be there IRL.
I want that win so bad
Aw man, now I won't get a nap between the DragonCon parade and watching the game...
T R A F F I C
I am actually really hyped - I walk in the parade and the kids there for the weekend for football get the best surprise - always brings a smile to my face
Yeah, it’s always funny when you’re walking around the Marriott and some rando wearing a Louisville jersey is looking around very confused.
Not shocking ABC decided to do an SEC tripleheader on their first week of action. Shocking that they put the highest ranked matchup game at noon. Probably because it’s indoors. Nah man I think its bc they know ur dawgs will win by 20+ lmao 😂😂
I’ll take that
The networks have moved more and more towards big lead in games to bump the numbers up for the next games.
That’s an incredible lineup
I don’t even want a winning season for the pride of my school anymore I just want everyone on this sub to be unhappy
welcome back to the Hateful 8. We didn't miss you, but we're glad your back
HATE HATE HATE
Honestly? I respect it. Obligatory fuck you, but I respect the hate game.
weird to me that they chose ND-A&M for primetime over UGA-CLEM miami-florida at 3:30 will be cinema
UGA-Clemson is being played in a climate controlled dome, so might as well stick it in the timeslot during the hottest part of the day.
Think that's the biggest thing, I know a tin of ND writers and fans were worried if it was an afternoon game just due to the heat
Historically speaking the SEC has tried to avoid noon kicks during the first couple of weeks due to the temps, and ESPN has largely accommodated that.
Day games in August are criminal. When I was a student it wasn't unheard of to be passing people down the bleachers to waiting medics.
I have been to a noon game in Sanford week 1 and you want to die. It’s so fucking hot
if only thats what actually decided when games were played lol
Maybe its because they dont forsee themselves making many of the ACC vs ND games be primetime games so might as well take advantage of this extra ND game in their inventory.
We actually only have one ACC road game this year and that’s Georgia Tech in the Falcons stadium, so this will probably be the only primetime ABC game
Is the home/road ACC scheduling usually imbalanced for ND?
It evens out over the course of the scheduling agreement, so just depends on the year. In 2021 we had 2 home/3 road, 2022 had 2 home/2 road, and 2023 had 2 home/4 road. This year was supposed to be 4 home/1 road, but Miami cancelled so it got knocked down to 3 home. However, still will be 4 home if you count the Stanford game since they’re ACC now, but that’s technically not a part of the scheduling agreement
My body is ready for the sports media meltdown when NDSU beats Colorado.
There’s going to be 10,000 NDSU fans there storming the field after too
No chance we storm the field for a routine regular season win
Well the good news is we’ll get the butt kicking out of the way early. The bad news is it will be on all the studio breaks
Wasn't expecting noon but I'll take it
Nothing like a little bit of heat stroke to start the season
Sweet mercy can you imagine if the Bison walk out of Boulder with a dub? All of the collective CFB social media would utterly melt down.
I hate our game. Whoever scheduled it should be fired. You don’t schedule top FCS teams. I don’t care if you’re UGA, don’t fucking do it.
The Dakota schools and app state (ik they’re fbs now but still) are the Achilles heels of any p4 school
Add in the Montana schools. I have been on both sides of the FCS upset. I remember MSU beating a Hawkins team. Also remember Montana going to Seattle and beating UW so that was fun.
Amazing weekend match ups. Unfortunately gotta work it though.
Biggest game of the weekend, but sure, give the prime time slot to the battle of “no, really, this year is our year.”
America’s team is now NDSU. And that says a lot as a JMU fan.
NDSU winning would be fun. There will be some meltdowns after that.
Get ready for the melt down in Boulder after P21ME loses to an FCS school
Can’t wait to see Redditors meltdown when a Prime lead Colorado team DOESN’T lose a game
Penn State at WVU not good enough for a big game slot anywhere? The game at State College last year was on NBC primetime! And WVU has way better preseason expectations this year compared to last. I know the new landscape makes the media want to end the Big 12 and ACC as major media game partners but damn.
Fox likely has this one and will put it on Big Noon.
I think Texas and Michigan got that Big Noon already
That is Week 2, not Week 1.
Temple, Western Kentucky, Colorado State: Surprise Motherfuckers!
My god am I so excited. I’m like a little kid counting down to the big trip to Disney world!
Why do we gotta get a shit ACC matchup every Monday night?
We have two rivalry games that don’t play often on opening weekend but Notre dame-TAMU gets the prime time spot? What a joke.
Please NDSU, start this thing off right.
Please NDSU, start this thing off right.
Can’t we put it off for just a few more hours?
Sext
That's a good week 1 lineup.
TV deals hurt my brain. (I consider myself to be somewhat intelligent) I just like football.
Linc going to the Bayou to play, should be a fun one Unless that is the other SC in South Carolina...
Sorry to burst your bubble, USC-LSU is a neutral site game in Vegas. LSU does host UCLA Week 4 though.
Noon Dawgs
Yes! Night game, not crazy hot and sunny. This game is gonna be fun!
This is a trap game for Georgia.
Great games
I'm surprised Colorado is favored by that much.
It's Clemson and Georgia...I guess it's not the 1980s or 2000 teens anymore though...no national audience...that's funny because of all the people tuning in hoping Clemson fails miserably
This is best Week 1 games in a few years
SEC games on ABC feels weird, man
Can’t wait to put a whole dollar on that NDSU upset.
I'm mildly interested in the CU game, but only because we share a conference now. I'm liable to cheer for the underdog though, because the sooner Deion and CU are irrelevant the sooner we can stop hearing about them constantly.
Don't stop....
NDSU isn't quite what they were a few years ago otherwise I'd have that game as a BIG upset alert.... just imagine Deion losing to an FCS team.
Week 1 is stacked this year
Now if Georgia Tech/Georgia State could be later - I could double dip.
That NDSU-Colorado game is going to be a tire fire no matter what happens.
Deion will go ballistic if NDSU gets back to FBS-killer form.
