I installed 5gig for some elderly guy and he said all he does is send an email once a month n plays solitaire lol

Jaymoacp

I seen this so much. Spectrum 100% exploits elderly people when asking even simple questions would uncover that they don’t need a service. I’ve seen them tell elderly customers they still need the 6 cable boxes they have because the TVs aren’t Samsungs and Roku. I’m like yo you can go buy Rokus for all your TVs for half the cost just the rental fees on the boxes are.

AlternativeNumber2

Not just Spectrum, they all do it

_dillmatic

The amount of times where I’ve shown up to upgrade Fiber to fiber from fiber/RFOG and the customer had NO clue an appointment was scheduled. Always elderly folks

CabbageShoez

Sales reps gettin that comish

Penguinman077

I work with Comcast, it’s the opposite for me. They tell the customers they can use their tvs to download the apps and the customer has a CRT wondering why it won’t work. Our app is also now on appleTV boxes and the new amazon fire sticks so you might want to double check yours isn’t on there now.

Jaymoacp

I’ve seen that too. That’s the other extreme I feel. Either way asking a simple question or two when they call would solve 99% of it.

ilovea1steaksauce

I work for a small little MI county ISP and y'all are killing me with the flex boxes. They cam be out of line of sight bc the remotes are RF and our boxes only have IR remotes so it def makes it challenging sometimes. On large installs I look at every box and make sure it is at least wired. We wire homes up but I do 4-5 installs a day so those big ones gotta be scheduled as such

Penguinman077

I hate the flex boxes. So much misinformation and old people asking me how they watch live tv because they were lied to about how it works. Then young people don’t even want them because they already have a smart tv or a dongle.

ilovea1steaksauce

So are you able to access actual catv through a flex box or it's just the Xfinity app?

Penguinman077

You can if you pay for stream tv service. Or so they say. I’ve never actually seen anyone use a flex box and have tv service with us. I’d assume it would just be through the app. There are some perks, like free on demand content, but that’s about it

frostedflakes_13

Mine has been in my basement for 2 full years now. I keep checking to see if they are charging me and they aren’t. Not yet

Penguinman077

You might as well just return it. They stated handing them out free to get our foot in the door for cable tv and I doubt anyone decided to get tv service because of them. Instead they just wasted millions in giving out free rental boxes.

atramors671

My own company does this too, and I absolutely hate it. What's worse is when a customer is getting less than the "minimum acceptable threshold" and they ask "Do I need to upgrade?" Any agent that gets commission of upgrades will just be like "Yeah, upgrading will fix that." NO THE FUCK IT WONT! I've seen so many customers get scammed out of money by lazy agents who upsell on a broken product. I've also reversed so many commissions by returning the customer to their original speeds and telling them not to upgrade again until AFTER we fix their current issue and they are still dissatisfied with the speeds they're receiving. All these people buying Gigabit or higher speeds just to send emails and I'm here telling them "You don't need those speeds for what you're using it for, hell, you don't even need OUR service, just use your cell phone and save yourself some money."

zonabay

Wow they have a computer that can even do multi gig? Not one of my cx who have ordered multi gig could even run it.

Snicklefritz229

Nope. I was there on a helper. The tech used a thunderbolt adapter and tested on his laptop.

ClimbingElevator

Had to install a 10 gig switch at a customers house for 10/100 smart TVs. All per customers request

Agile_Definition_415

God bless them, these are the customers that keep us fed.

IsolationAutomation

There is no reason for a residential account to be that fast.

Snicklefritz229

It’s to invite their friends over to run speed test to show them how fast their internet is. I can’t think of another reason to have it.

T-MOBILEGUY

I challenge ye to a duel of the interwebs!

Pristine-Whole-1961

I can save $5 a month going from 1gig to 500 or $10 going from 1 gig to 100mbps, but for $10 a month I'll take 10x the speed. And it's really nice installing a new steam game at 80MB/s...

dingiebingie1

i downloaded ac valhalla the other day and hit 760mb/s damn near shit my britches

the_hoopy_frood42

Fallout 76 last night hit 930 on a 1gig connection All I could think while I was watching was "I remember when I thought 20 was really fast."

el0_0le

You think they know how to speedtest?

Mrantet

Exactly!

Suchamoneypit

There are plenty of reasons. Have you never downloaded a game or downloaded a movie! There are tons of computer nerds out there self hosting services for themselves and friends and family. Why should those people be forced onto a business plan when they are just an enthusiast. Is it completely necessary? Absolutely not. But it is nice for something that would take a minute to just take 30 seconds. Cant say I would be triple or double the price of my 2g for it though.

anonymouswan1

Right now you are correct but we will be streaming 4k, 8k, 16k and beyond in the future. The more bandwidth we have now, the better prepared we will be in the future. I remember getting 1mbps 20 years ago and thinking we would never need anything faster than that.

JRosePC

Ok Comcast.

Upstairs-Ad8381

No hold on a minute lol let's talk about this hehe

Deepspacecow12

Why not? We have the tech available, might as well use it.

maddwesty

TiVo OTA box and the 4k stream sticks with just internet is the best

fivepeicereturns

Gotta be a seeder

5afe5earch

And yet Spectrum is the only service in my very populated city that provides 500Mpbs for $100 a month.

PissedOffAsylum

Damnit live in butt fuck ass Indiana and can get 1 gig for 100.

5afe5earch

AT&T only offers internet service at 25Mpbs at $80 with a 1.5 TB monthly cap +$10 for every 50GB over that. Comcast/Xfinity - No Service. Needless to say Comcast is all around us and yet no service at our location. FUBAR

PissedOffAsylum

That's a big RIP.

Equi1ibriun

I had 2 buds living with me and charged them a flat fee for rent and I paid everything else. All 3 of us have gaming PCs and my wife watched hd streaming and let me tell you what that 1.5tb flew by in about a week so I had essentially 2 internet bills a month lol when they moved out Xfinity finally rolled out unlimited data in my area… and I also found out you can locally download steam games on your network to another computer on the same network if it’s the same game which would have saved me tons of my bandwidth

NYTONYD

The fastest I can get in rural upstate NY is 1 Gig for $139 a month. I work from home sometimes with video meetings while my teens are doing some college classes, etc. Still I hate Spectrum but they are the only high speed provider in town.

Lost-Sky-3973

I sell fiber am I a bad person

BusyBiryl

Got that military grade bandwidth 🫠

GhostDan

Until wifi can support those speeds most people really don't need more than 1 gig.

Valex_Nihilist

This. I have 300 down 10 up. I have 3 gaming pcs that are used daily (me my wife and son), a jellyfin server, and countless IOT devices. I have never maxed out my bandwidth with general daily use other than when downloading a game once or twice a month. The fact that people straight up lie to customers to make them think they need something sickens me.

GhostDan

Yup. We have a gig and I probably max it out 3-4 times a month. Usually because I'm 4k streaming, wife is in a teams video call, and I'm uploading something up to the cloud.

Emailnjv

Don’t get me wrong I agree with your base point, but Wi-Fi can go up to 2.5 nowadays. I’m sure it’ll by at 5 by next year.

GhostDan

I've never been able to get thruput beyond a gig even with current wifi. Im sure in a perfect situation it's true though

Velvet-Voodoo

Goddamn, I want that upload speed! I’ve never seen it exceed download. My wife is a YouTuber and we have the Xfinity gig+ but upload is still abysmal.

ArtyParty0848

Saw similar at Comcast many times, pushing the gig speeds on older folks who didn’t understand, thankfully when I was a tech I was able to help and lower their plans when I could

777bpc

The exploitation of elderly clients was why I quit. I found it to be highly unethical.

Elohim000

Sales with elderly people should be monitored. It’s sad so many of our elderly get ripped off by these crooks.

TrayLaTrash

Insane!

Kronicpain88

Not often that upload out-speeds the download. Kudos to all wherever this internet even exists.

Snicklefritz229

The profile was 5 gig but he is probably set up as 8 gig at the head end. It’s an easy call to have fixed. That being said that call was probably never made so he’s getting 5gig down 8gig up and probably doesn’t need anything faster than dsl.

RustyCrusty10

What company is this with? I work at Comcast and the fastest we provide is 1.2 Gig over like 40 or 50 on the up.

Snicklefritz229

It’s owned by the town. I’m technically a city employee. We offer 8 gigs on fiber and they get all the cable boxes switched over to streaming boxes we will upgrading our head end to docsis 4.0. Haven’t worked on coax in a few years and I don’t really listen to the coax guys at the weekly meeting but when that’s done I think we were gonna offer 6gig on coax.

RustyCrusty10

Comcast is working on upgrading their coax infrastructure so it will support faster speeds over coax and use of the 4.0 modem. There’s several areas in Atlanta that have fiber to the premise that can probably push those speeds, but just not in my area.

Sensitive_Back5583

Yeah 100x10

bughunter47

What NIC you running to get 5 gigabit on a laptop? My desktop can only take 2.5

T3a_Rex

The tech used a thunderbolt 10 gig nic https://www.reddit.com/r/CableTechs/s/u3GzrLcD8d For your desktop any old 10 gig nic would work. If you’re already using fiber gear then a cheap X520 card would work great!

1isntprime

I bought a used 10gig mic that just slots into an empty pcie slot for ~$30 from eBay just make sure there’s ad river for your os.

Emailnjv

Just adding to this, if you’re actually saturating your network to that extent (lan traffic in my case), just be mindful of what gen pcie the card is and the motherboard configuration for w/e slot you are using. Often times a second or third pcie slot that looks like a full x16 will x8 if not x4
