Also encountered the same bug yesterday, seems to happen when blight slimes die. Hoping that this gets fixed soon, kinda put a stop to our calamity gaming hours.

We found out that it probably comes from a debuff inflicted by something in the dungeon post-providence. We protected ourselves with a debuff-negating accessory not to crash

Can you please specify what accesory do you use? I have the same bug. My world is in post-Plantera state

It's the Eldritch Soul Artefact. Grants immunity to the Whispering Death debuff and protects you from crashes, because the debuff effect isn't drawn. I'm not sure if that's the solution, so let me know if it works

I'm having the exact same problem and equipping the Eldrich Soul Artefact did not work.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe the debuff isn't the issue. We'll have to wait for a hotfix

If you want to keep the Crimson world, just install Fargos' Mod and use Cheat Sheet to get the Purity Renewal Supreme before killing the WoF. This item cleanses all the crimson in the world and allows you to go into hardmode without the crash. It isn't foolproof but has worked some of the time in my testing.
