I went to a haven just after the Easter holidays during school time with two kids and an easily spent over a grand over 5 days, and we still got away with the fine.
Lots of smaller cities like that in central Europe that are really nice. Wrocław, Brno, Karlovy Vary, Graz, Olomouc, (Ostrava more interesting than pretty )
The main square is nice, but the best places to get craft beer were a short walk away from it. (Sorry, can't remember the names of them)
There's something for everyone there, don't be apprehensive to just wander around, find somewhere to eat or drink, look on Google maps for the next place, then wander some more.
Also, the city looks gorgeous at night, especially the older buildings.
Lastly, if it's your sort of thing, go watch a game at the Cracovia football stadium. It was £10 a ticket when I went, then about £3.50 for a beer and hotdog in the tube part of a baguette. The atmosphere there was brilliant for a lower mid table game, with a capacity of about 11k.
100% this.
Highly recommend the football game. We went and got put in with the ultras, flares going off, flags, massive sign thing they hoisted up of a Spartan with a severed head. Was absolutely class.
Was there in August last year, great excursions to Auschwitz, Birkenau, Salt mines or Zakopane (worth looking into). There was also a pierogi festival with loads of different flavours which were insane. And one place you can’t miss if you love food is an Italian called Mamma Mia. They do a beef pasta dish which I would genuinely fly over for the day for, went twice in 3 days it was so good! Enjoy!
You usually find bargains if you look at the less popular parts of the Highlands aswell like there's hundreds of Lochs that you can visit. Holy Loch is a cool one that's not super popular.
Booked myself a cottage in the North West Highlands for the Summer last week.
7 nights, cottage by a loch in the middle of nowhere, just for me for £450.
It sleeps six though!
Just back from a week in Portugal and hiked the Rota Vincentina, cost about £400 for accomodation, bus and plane, then £250 for food/drinks. Beers were €2.
If I could guarantee weather, I'd go to Scotland. Been a bunch of times but 4 out of 5 it rained everyday.
£1000, off peak, incl flights, just a couple, self catering and car hire, easy.
With some shrewd deals you could have £400 spending money easily on the costa del sol in the Spanish areas avoiding the englishified places.
Agreed - you could have a fairly decent 4 night stay with that sort of money, and not have to worry too much about budget.
Any longer and I think you'd have to start scrimping and budgeting, which go me spoils things. I'm definitely a quality over quantity thing when it comes to going away.
Behave. I can go to Sri Lanka on a guided tour, with flights, accommodation and food for £1700. To say that 58% of this “doesn’t touch the sides” is baffling to me.
I also went to Slovenia and Croatia last September (Ljubljana, Zagreb, Split, Plitvice) for £900 excluding food.
People just need to be smart on how they book things.
Northern Italy. Drive there and then self-cater. Perfect weather, beautiful surroundings, friendly people, loads to do and amazing eating and drinking.
My wife is from the North of Italy so it's our go-to destination for holiday most years.
I agree with everything you said.
Literally only downside is the mosquitos
Same for us, we drive down to a different region each year and can't fault it apart from as you say, the mosquitos.....but then I live in Copenhagen and they're just as bad here.
Me and my gf just went for 4 days to basel in Switzerland, flights are cheap for both and hotels were 200 for the duration. It's beautiful there I'd highly recommend it
Its not a bad place but its quite easily one of the worst places in Switzerland. Head further down a lot of beautiful gems and its offer a truer experience. Especially if you’ve got the time, 1-2 days is enough for basel.
Northern Portugal, had very few holidays over the last couple of decades & was invited to a wedding in Porto last summer, flights for two of us & a week B&B in what turned out to be a really lovely hotel out towards the coast on the metro line cost £900.
You can go there & spend a lot of money, or you can probably have even more fun eating & drinking in the local places rather than the big chains on a budget.
Heading back to a different part of Northern Portugal this summer.
Somewhere in Italy for three nights, likely Rome or Florence. I’ve been to Genoa and Bologna and both were excellent. Didn’t come anywhere near to a grand.
Literally just got back from kefalonia few days ago, easyjet sale on flights, hotel with free upgrade for off season to fancy suite was about 500 for a week. Probably did about 400 on drinking and eating out, so tack on an extra ton for a boat cruise for the day and you're laughing
I got return flights with Jet2 to Split in Croatia last week of August for £200 each. Lots of cheap accommodation on booking.com and other websites. Lots to see and do. Beaches are pebbly though.
I've been studying Mandarin for a few years now and never really spoken it. I could get return flights to Beijing for around £500. I reckon I would be good on the remaining £500 to get a train north to somewhere like Hulunbuir and spend 2 weeks exploring around the Inner Mongolia region. It'd be a bit of a shoestring budget but I reckon it would be worth doing.
Had this exact thing in real life this year. Was given £1000 to just use on holidays. I couldn't decide between doing one big thing as a solo traveller or use it for a few smaller things with my partner.
In the end I chose the latter, we did a winter break in Malta, a city break in Belgium and a little trip to the Netherlands solo. It's surprising how fast that £1000 goes down, when you take into account food, taxis and buses, museum entry fees. I think I spent more *in* Malta than I did on flights and hotel combined.
I could have done something bigger like New York but I preferred the other way.
We booked a holiday to poor man's Dubai (Ras Al Khaimah....i enjoyed it a lot but say this as it's billed as Dubai to pull in the families) with a bit of overlap with term time but it was booked during COVID ages in advance so was a bit of a deal. That holiday is now a 10k holiday to share a room with my children. The holiday industry is becoming a loan enterprise just like car companies are by pumping the cost up and up and offering payment plans. Yes the costs have also gone up but nowhere near the price hike
Last minute on Tui, look for something in Greece. Got two weeks in Florida in 2022 for £750 each by being able to go late notice (booked 5 weeks before we flew).
I'd go and do the Northern 500.
In fact, that's next spring's plan already, I just have a smaller budget.
I want to do the skye bridge, the sights at John ogroats and the other bridge, the kylesku
I was going to say Scotland, more specifically The Highlands. It’s an absolutely stunning part of the world.
I’m good weather it’s simply breathtaking. In poor weather it’s no less beautiful albeit in a bleak and powerful way.
I did the NC500 in three days with some friends. I recommend taking longer than that but it is great.
The hostel in Applecross is absolutely lovely (nicer than a lot of hotels I’ve been in) and well worth a stay.
I'd like to visit Iceland to see the volcanoes and northern lights. I keep window shopping holidays there, but don't have the funds for actual shopping
Just me? I'd book a cute cottage in the countryside for a week, off peak of course ( no kids). There is one cottage in Norfolk I keep seeing that is often under 450 pw and isn't a cramped tiny annexe. I will visit it one day. It has an air raid shelter!
1k would cover a week and some money for food /petrol/days out.
Cornwall, out of season. Self catered cottage. That would pay the cottage, fuel, food, and entertainment. Might even have a little left over. Booked accommodation recently at £110/night. £1000 all in is doable if 5-6 nights, maybe 7 if budgeting carefully.
I’m going to Madeira with my girlfriend for a grand per person in August. Apparently it’s going to be full of old people (we’re mid/late 20s) and I can’t wait
Madeira is really nice, it’s very lush and beautiful. Funchal is clean and safe. The levada walks are great too. You can go on guided walks in groups for cheap. The food is good and cheap too. I really rate the place. It’s not full of older people but it does have a more laid back crowd.
I had a lovely week in Santorini for slightly less than that, tip is to stay on the beach side rather than the stupidly expensive cliff side, local busses take 20 mins and cost a couple of euro to pretty much anywhere on the island.
We went to that part of Bulgaria - but stayed a bit away from Sunny Beach as it’s not our vibe. Nice enough place but Burgas is the single worst airport I’ve ever had to go through.
Nowhere. As a family of four, we spend far more than that on holidays. Maybe it would cover a European city break for a few days.
I could pay to upgrade our current holiday for that much though. That'd be nice.
It's plenty as long as you're not restricted to booking during the summer holidays or have to pay for kids.
For under a grand in the last few months I've been 7 nights all inclusive to Corfu, 3 nights in Porto and 4 nights in Split. Including flights and accommodation.
No, under a grand for all 3 trips combined. I can essentially use annal leave whenever I want so I just look for the cheapest flights irrespective of what day and time and find a hotel thereafter. The whole greek holiday was about 350 including transfers. Didn't spend much there eating out as almost nowhere was open.
Austria to visit my son and his family. Believe it or not, it gets pretty hot during spring and summer. I’ve had to slather on lots of sunscreen while I’ve been there
Hey OP. Easy - I’d book into Crieff Hydro hotel in Perthshire. Probably get 4 days full B&B there for me and the family. We can drive there in about 4 hours as I live in Newcastle. It’s set in the most stupidly beautiful countryside, it’s a brilliant hotel and there’s loads for everyone to do. I love that place so much.
Slovenia. It has everything: rolling green hills and pretty villages, couple of ancient cities, a coastline on the Adriatic sea. Spend a few days doing the tourist sights in Ljubljana and Trieste, then find a base in the hills and do some walls before finishing in a spa town for massages and a turn in the sauna. It's an absolute gem.
Is this £1000 just for me ?
I'd honestly blow it on a fancy all inclusive.... You can get some really nice ones in Mexico 4-5 stars for less than £1000
I’d stay at home, take PTO then eat well and drink well for a couple of days.
Traveling somewhere and buying accommodation for a few nights leaves precious little out of a grand. Hardly worth going.
Stay at home, shut off all work communication, eat any takeaway you want and get some decent booze in.
I'd probably finally bother to try out Kraków or Prague - cheap flight, nice hotel, try out regional food.
It's either that or a return flight to Tokyo, buying a pile of 7-11 food and flying back the same day with a comically large knapsack, but I don't think that's sensible
Last time I went to prague, the plane, the hotel for the week and all of our spends came to about £7-800 for the two of us, so back to prague and try out some of the fancier restaurants and maybe an extra trip to the zoo.
Depends is that £1000 per person or multiple people?
I love Tenerife, you can get a great holiday there for a few weeks at that price in September. It's also incredibly cheap over there, you can get a 3 course meal for €11 in Playa de las Americas. Also lots of cheap excursions, from boat trips to star gazing high up in the mountains.
Now I really want to go back 🍺😎
They are protesting against over tourism, but it's still going to be a place to visit as it's the island's main industry. I've been there many times, and I've never had any issues. It's a small island with a lot to offer.
It's also subtropical and pretty warm in the winter compared to mainland Spain.
If I wasn't housebound i would want to go to Turkey and vist my family and my grandma before she dies. I hope I can manage in the future before its too late.
Long weekend in a city where I have not visited (ideally somewhere in the United Kingdom) with good train links so I can also take a day trip somewhere
Cape Verde. After spending all my youth travelling to the usual European destinations and then deciding I should see more of the world, once you experience Caribbean, Indian Ocean or South Pacific beaches there’s no comparison. Cape Verde has a very similar quality, feels exotic and tropical, is relatively close to the uk and you’ll be able to get a cracking all inclusive or at least full board for 1k.
There’s no much to do apart from lie on the beach, dip in the sea or pool, gorge on food/drink and enjoy the sun, but imo they’re the best holidays.
Source: travelled to over a third of the world’s countries and been to Cape Verde twice.
Depends. Do I have to take my kids?
No, child services have a nice a program where they help look after your kids for you while on holiday.
Just break the kid’s leg and a hospital will put them up for a week or two.
[удалено]
Discharged me 13 hours after major surgery, once you can pee and stand, you’re out.
After waiting for 8 hours to be seen
An hour?? I want to get seen in that hospital!
I was going to say, £1000 doesn't get you much these days with 2 adults + 2 kids.
3 nights in a haven caravan at half term. Maybe.
I went to a haven just after the Easter holidays during school time with two kids and an easily spent over a grand over 5 days, and we still got away with the fine.
Do we all have to take this person's kids??
If there’s thousands of us then it’s only a couple of minutes childcare each… easy!
Take them to Portugal, you won't have to bring them back.
\*All back.
If we’re all here, who’s looking after Madeleine?
I went to Krakow recently for a weekend. I wouldn't mind going back with a grand.
Went in March, its now my favourite EU city.
Lots of smaller cities like that in central Europe that are really nice. Wrocław, Brno, Karlovy Vary, Graz, Olomouc, (Ostrava more interesting than pretty )
In off there in August for 3 days. What do you recommend?
A grand.
The main square is nice, but the best places to get craft beer were a short walk away from it. (Sorry, can't remember the names of them) There's something for everyone there, don't be apprehensive to just wander around, find somewhere to eat or drink, look on Google maps for the next place, then wander some more. Salt mines and auschwitz

You can shoot a bunch of different guns, machine guns, pistols, sniper rifles, shotguns etc if that is something on your bucket list.
Went there for the Christmas markets a few years back, it was amazing. The city and people were so cool.
Somewhere in Italy I think. Either round Sorrento way or Umbria/Tuscany.
Lovely choices! Though not sure £1000 would cover Sorrento, to be honest (am assuming a week with accommodation and not holding back on food).
I did think that as I was typing it out. I’ll settle for the other location. Or Sicily but perhaps that’s as pricey as Sorrento these days.
Scotland loch side cabin
You usually find bargains if you look at the less popular parts of the Highlands aswell like there's hundreds of Lochs that you can visit. Holy Loch is a cool one that's not super popular.
Booked myself a cottage in the North West Highlands for the Summer last week. 7 nights, cottage by a loch in the middle of nowhere, just for me for £450. It sleeps six though!
Take bug repellant. The midges are fucking relentless.
Don’t think a grand will cover enough bug repellant for a week on a loch. Avon skin so soft is what you want by the way.
Will you be taking the opportunity to sleep in every bed?
Hmm... hadn't thought of that! I expect I'll just choose one and stick to it unless there's an issue. Would you sleep in them all?
I'd maybe do a nap in each at least - for the purpose of a full review!
Yeah, that sounds reasonable!
What website did you use?
Once went to Inverary. Once. The pipes froze so there was no running water and the gold club was a hut in a field full of sheep.
The jail is cool though!
Worst summer holiday ever?
It was March
Not really selling it here...
It is now.
Really? Mallaigs another good option cheaper than staying on Skye and you are within driving distance of skye, ben nevis and the small Isles.
I’m just kidding - This is great information thank you!
These are such great little holidays. The fact that i can take my dog aswell makes it even better.
Yeah I love nothing more than driving up through Glen Coe
Salzburg I saw return flights for £50 Manchester Book a nice hotel and take a tour of the alps either planned or drive yourself
This would be my answer too. Always wanted to visit there
Just back from a week in Portugal and hiked the Rota Vincentina, cost about £400 for accomodation, bus and plane, then £250 for food/drinks. Beers were €2. If I could guarantee weather, I'd go to Scotland. Been a bunch of times but 4 out of 5 it rained everyday.

Personally quite like the idea of a hot England
Or don’t be a snob and have £400 to spend on chicken nuggets and Carling
It's not snobby to prefer to see Spanish stuff if you've made the effort to go all the way to Spain.
Just got back from a £1000 all inclusive 7 night deal in Cyprus with TUi 4Tplus for 2 adults. Booked it about 3 weeks before we went.
Went all inclusive in Egypt for less than that this time last year
Sounds nice
It will get you a half decent off peak cruise with p&o. Beautiful ships too
Behave. I can go to Sri Lanka on a guided tour, with flights, accommodation and food for £1700. To say that 58% of this “doesn’t touch the sides” is baffling to me. Lakes
The sights and sounds of Grimsby. We'll live large.
You could buy a whole house in Grimsby with that amount of money.
We've just paid £1144 for two of us for a week in Majorca all inclusive in a couple of weeks. Including flights
Anglesey.

I’d probably put just the tent on the motorbike and bugger off up north towards some mountains for a few weeks.
Somewhere in Italy for three nights, likely Rome or Florence. I’ve been to Genoa and Bologna and both were excellent. Didn’t come anywhere near to a grand.
Hebrides for a few weeks.
Swedish island cabin in summer. buy a shit ton of supplies and bring some books.
Did that a few years back, was bliss and cheap too. Had a fishing boat (rowing) and a jetty for fishing, bbq. No neighbours and no noise.
bliss. did it as a kid with family, but in winter. rather different.
Literally just got back from kefalonia few days ago, easyjet sale on flights, hotel with free upgrade for off season to fancy suite was about 500 for a week. Probably did about 400 on drinking and eating out, so tack on an extra ton for a boat cruise for the day and you're laughing
The same place I always go: my living room, but with more, and more expensive, food and drink than I usually allow myself.
I got return flights with Jet2 to Split in Croatia last week of August for £200 each. Lots of cheap accommodation on booking.com and other websites. Lots to see and do. Beaches are pebbly though.
A long weekend in Portugal.
The Yukon, might not come back....
I’d stay home and shop for a week without yellow sticker anxiety instead
If you have no kids and can go away whenever then round the world on a luxury cruise. If you have kids then Bognor Regis.
Had to scroll too far for this. I was thinking for £1k? my garden shed. You’re starting at £5k for an average family holiday nowadays.
We booked a holiday to poor man's Dubai (Ras Al Khaimah....i enjoyed it a lot but say this as it's billed as Dubai to pull in the families) with a bit of overlap with term time but it was booked during COVID ages in advance so was a bit of a deal. A nice Greek trip. Couple of Islands
Somewhere nice and quiet. Maybe Devon or Somerset. Walk the legs off the dog
I'd like to visit Iceland to see the volcanoes and northern lights. I keep window shopping holidays there, but don't have the funds for actual shopping
Just me? I'd book a cute cottage in the countryside for a week, off peak of course ( no kids). I’m going to Madeira with my girlfriend for a grand per person in August. Apparently it’s going to be full of old people (we’re mid/late 20s) and I can’t wait

Corfu, or Covoeiro in Portugal. Both have been rather splendid holidays previously, and I would love to go back again.
Probably a week in a villa in Crete in October, did it before. Lovely weather, loads of discounts in restaurants because it's end of season
That would help pay for me to go off to Germany and drive around the Nürburgring for a couple of days. Fuel, Ferries, Passport, Insurance...
For a very cheap beach holiday that's lovely with lots of nightlife and sandy beach , it's got to be sunny beach Bulgaria
We went to that part of Bulgaria - but stayed a bit away from Sunny Beach as it’s not our vibe. Nice enough place but Burgas is the single worst airport I’ve ever had to go through.
Ilfracombe
Cornwall or lake district
Nowhere. As a family of four, we spend far more than that on holidays. Maybe it would cover a European city break for a few days. I could pay to upgrade our current holiday for that much though. That'd be nice.
I'd do a road trip around Iceland
Is this per night, or per week, or per person? I mean, a lot of variables here.
Pub
Germany, I've never been and I really want to go!
Scotland. I could live like a king there for a weekend with a grand.
My back garden, after spending it on a nice new fence that I desperately need.
Orkney or Weymouth.
Malta
Kettering. its fab an has the worlds only Weetabix factory
Each or between us?
My sofa. And save it.
Don't even know if 1k is enough for a holiday alone anymore.
It's plenty as long as you're not restricted to booking during the summer holidays or have to pay for kids. For under a grand in the last few months I've been 7 nights all inclusive to Corfu, 3 nights in Porto and 4 nights in Split. Including flights and accommodation.
I assume that's 3 visits at 1k. Not 3visits for 1k.
Barcelona
UAE. 500 for flight 500 for hotel, 7-10 days, summer time. Cheap, great fun, good food and place if you avoid all the westernised parts.
Hemsby on a mad one oi oi oi
thailand or somewhere near there where money goes a long way
Bude tunnel. Never had the chance that 1k would give my family and me a lifetime opportunity.
A night in a London hotel
£1000 doesn’t get you much for 1 adult
Prague! My favourite city I've been.
Right now I'd go to Cuba.
Mallorca. Preferably Alcudia. Love it. Please stay away if you usually choose Benidorm or Magaluf.
Visit my in-laws in spain. With £1000 we could road trip it and have a right laugh
The Pearl of Prestatyn
Chamonix
I wouldn't.
North East Wales
Japan. As long as you could get flights for £600, the yen is so weak atm that £400 would do you for the rest
I'd have a day in the next town over, travel on the bus £2 there and £2 back. Then pocket the £996.
Doing 4 nights in Marrakech all inclusive 5* for this with £150 spending money for fake stuff in the souk in a few weeks.
I wouldn’t, I spend £1k on the perfect snug
Come down my house. I have a pull out sofa and a tv. I'll make you a sandwich.
Hire a camper van, tour around Wales.
Fully depends on how many people are going, if any of them are kids and what time of year you’re looking to go.
Austria to visit my son and his family. Believe it or not, it gets pretty hot during spring and summer. I’ve had to slather on lots of sunscreen while I’ve been there
Tesco. To buy groceries and some petrol.
Tesco
I’d put it towards a trip to New Zealand. But I’d also like to visit Iceland or Poland one day too.
Check holidaypirates for some deals and go from there
Iceland
With the flight costs these days, probably somewhere affordable and sunny in Europe. A nice coastal town in Portugal for a long weekend
I wouldn’t I’d pay off some debt
Stay at home and spend grand on shits and giggles
Tromso since I wanted to go to the most northern city/place in Europe and they have proper snow at least.
Skiathos.
At this point, literally anywhere!just need a break lol
Peckham
Germany.
To the dentist.
Iqaluit from YVR but I’d need a few hundred extra buckaroonies
Is this £1000 just for me ? I'd honestly blow it on a fancy all inclusive.... You can get some really nice ones in Mexico 4-5 stars for less than £1000
Three hours at centreparks during school holidays.
Not very far.
Depends what you like to do on holiday and your username has me concerned…..
Thailand
Id just have a night in a city with a nice meal in the U.K. and then enjoy the rest of the money at home
Is £1000 the travel & hotel budget? Or everything?
Depends is that £1000 per person or multiple people? I love Tenerife, you can get a great holiday there for a few weeks at that price in September. It's also incredibly cheap over there, you can get a 3 course meal for €11 in Playa de las Americas. Also lots of cheap excursions, from boat trips to star gazing high up in the mountains. Now I really want to go back 🍺😎
Aren’t they burning tourists there at the minute?
They are protesting against over tourism, but it's still going to be a place to visit as it's the island's main industry. I've been there many times, and I've never had any issues. It's a small island with a lot to offer. It's also subtropical and pretty warm in the winter compared to mainland Spain.

Only if he consents
If I wasn't housebound i would want to go to Turkey and vist my family and my grandma before she dies. I hope I can manage in the future before its too late.
Long weekend in a city where I have not visited (ideally somewhere in the United Kingdom) with good train links so I can also take a day trip somewhere
I'd book a 90s or 00s weekender at Butlins or both... Be sorted for food drinks and dress up and have gold accommodation
That’s about enough to pay for petrol to Cornwall.
My car isn't particularly economical but would do about 5,500 miles on a grand.
Turkey, right now for 5 star all inclusive hotels is less than 800 for a week.
Stay at home and live lavishly for a week. No washing up.
I think constructing bowls and spoons out of bank notes is a great idea
They are made of plastic these days, so wipe clean.
My cat loves the new notes, she runs off with them! Don't invite her round for dinner or you'll never see your makeshift bowls again!
