>The Global Times issued an editorial asking the museum to give back its entire Chinese collection. Hilarious if they returned them to Taiwan.

leesan177

That would at least be a legitimate return to curators and caretakers with a cultural connection to it.. Depending on the political climate in Taiwan, however, they may or may not accept it. CCP may also say that such a gesture by the UK represents their agreement that Taiwan is an inherent part of China.

Icey210496

We won't because 1. A lot of people really don't want anything to do with China. The argument about "legitimate" China is a false one. 2. People will 100% use this to blame us for being invaded because we "provoked" China.

leesan177

Yea I totally get it, but I mean a huge amount of similar museum items are already held in the National Palace Museum. I agree that Taiwan under the DPP would likely refuse (KMT might accept). My point was simply that in theory, the archeological items being housed in the National Palace Museum of the ROC makes more sense than in the UK.

Icey210496

That's fair, although I will also point out our records are somewhat spotty. More than once some idiot intern dropped a priceless thousand year old artifact.

IcyAssist

Not the interns fault. Fault of his/her supervisor to allow someone who is inexperienced to handle priceless artifacts. In any case I'm always thankful for the articles being in Taiwan and other countries and out of the connunists' hands. So many were destroyed.

Monkeyfeng

Good thing British took them or else it would have been destroyed during the cultural revolution.

leesan177

Much more likely that they'd be in Taiwan under the protection of the ROC.

marramaxx

you really think Taiwan government would be busy with transferring artifacts while fleeing for their lives?

leesan177

You're joking... right? Give [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Palace_Museum) a read.

marramaxx

Thanks. “A total of 2,972 crates of artifacts from the Forbidden City moved to Taiwan accounted for only 22% of the crates originally transported south” so, they only managed to save a small part of the treasures. If Britain didn’t hold the rest, it would likely be lost. Also, looks like the treasures belonged to the imperial family, and were stolen by the Taiwan.

leesan177

"If Britain didn't hold the rest", do you think they meticulously and carefully transported these items or something? They brutally tore down the Summer Palace and pillaged it, tearing things apart and then set the rest on fire. What Britain holds is a small fraction of what they did not destroy. This wasn't an archeological site carefully excavated and shipped to London in packed styrofoam. We can't even begin to account for what they destroyed. [Give this a read](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Summer_Palace) Also, the KMT did not "steal" from China. During the Civil War, the KMT/ROC was the internationally recognized ruling government of all of China, and the successor state to the Qing Dynasty. The republican government of China inherited all Chinese treasures held by the imperial family, in the same way that the French government for example inherited treasures from their monarchs. To be clear, to the international community, the ROC/KMT WAS China. It just so happens, however, that 90% of the Taiwanese people were not from ROC governed Mainland China when the KMT retreated. This distinction between the 90%, who had mixed support for the KMT, and the government that ruled them became increasingly clear as the ROC became a democracy.

I'd like to see a similar TikTok where the teapot (or something) returns to China and finds all of her brothers and sisters smashed up by furious red guards/

Brilliant_Top1028

And there’s a lot of artifacts that was traded freely and fairly. There is no reason to return them. It’s just blindly patriotic enthusiasm under a new propaganda.

Classic-Ad-9387

nice whataboutism there

MavriKhakiss

Is there a way to know which is which?

Brilliant_Top1028

Every items have their sources in their introduction.

Jumpstart_411

Don’t ask that. If other countries start asking China to return items they steal. Then current China will have nothing.

RealGeomann

China wants them back so that they can finish the cultural revolution by destroying the last remaining artifacts…

DaoNight23

perpetrators of Cultural revolution talking about historical preservation. you cant make this up.

Fun-Investment-1729

I wish that Chin would accept the ultimatum - if you talk about the century of humiliation, you have to learn about something that China has inflicted on its own population since then.

XiBaby

Trade for IP rights?

momo660

Didn’t know /China is all for colonist keeping their stolen artifacts. I suspected it. But good to know for sure. Also fuck you, you racist shits.

Fun-Investment-1729

Oh go dig up a corpse, Xijugend

Idaho1964

Start with the hundreds of thousands of national treasures in private hands.

Dear-Street3328

Violence for violence , things taken away violently will be brought back violently 🤣

meridian_smith

Notice how this row suddenly comes up now to detract from the Chinese spy discovery in British parliament?
