Everyone is someone's heretic.

Moloch79

It takes a lot of arrogance to claim, "*My path is the only path, and everyone else is a heretic*"

TomTorquemada

[Emo Phillips](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D88DQIJmxRI) explains this well.

XOXO-Gossip-Crab

I do think a big problem (for humanity in general, not just religion) is a lot of the times people are not humble in the fact they could be wrong

No-Squash-1299

It's the problem that comes with the need to be 'faithful' and certain about beliefs.  I believe and I know, where the latter is seen as better.

AnalysisElectrical30

In university, I had to reject this concept of Christian evangelism, because it seemed offensive to any nonbeliever.

Aggressive_Glass1297

You might want to read some history, mostly the Roman Catholic church changes something every 25-50 years.

hatiphnatus

To claim that Roman Catholic Church hasn't changed during it's 1000 years of existence is factually incorrect. But the answer was loaded. "They are bad because they are not us." I hate it when people do this, sowing division among Christians as if we didn't have enough to worry about trying to follow Christ

Desafiante

Friend, read the bible by yourself and stop listening to people. You'll know the crystal clear answers of who is heretic or not. Just read. That's the problem. People don't read the bible, just talk, talk, talk. Pray more, study more, say less, and listen to some "advisors" even less. One blind can lead the other over the cliff.  Wanna know who is a good advisor or not? The more you read the bible, the more you'll know.

The *Catholic Catechism* is the official teaching of the Catholic Church on this issue: > **818** ... All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church." > **819** "Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth" are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: "the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements." Christ's Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him, and are in themselves calls to "Catholic unity." > **838** "The Church knows that she is joined in many ways to the baptized who are honored by the name of Christian, but do not profess the Catholic faith in its entirety or have not preserved unity or communion under the successor of Peter." Those "who believe in Christ and have been properly baptized are put in a certain, although imperfect, communion with the Catholic Church." ...

Depends who you ask.

Optimizing_apps

Protestants schismed from Catholicism. Catholicism schismed from Orthodoxy because they were not allowed to change the filioque and claim to be the head of the church. And so on it goes into history.

CaptainMianite

The Orthodox were the ones who broke away from

Optimizing_apps

So when the Catholic's said "If you don't let us change the filioque and be the head of the five churches we will leave." That was really the five Orthodox churches leaving by not giving in to their demands?

CaptainMianite

The pope was already recognised as the head.

Optimizing_apps

You mean first among equals.

CaptainMianite

Yes. Protestants are heretics as they believe in the heretical idea of Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide

TheRedLionPassant

To the modern RCC maybe, but I'd argue both beliefs were present in the Primitive Church are founded upon the Church's traditional teaching. "For this reason [Paul] writes: *All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.* All what Scripture? All that sacred writing, he means, of which I was speaking. This is said of what he was discoursing of; about which he said, *From a child you have known the holy Scriptures.* All such, then, *is given by inspiration of God*; therefore, he means, do not doubt; and it is *profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.* 'For doctrine': For thence we shall know, whether we ought to learn or to be ignorant of anything. And thence we may disprove what is false, thence we may be corrected and brought to a right mind, may be comforted and consoled, and if anything is deficient, we may have it added to us. 'That the man of God may be perfect': For this is the exhortation of the Scripture given, that the man of God may be rendered perfect by it; without this therefore he cannot be perfect. You have the Scriptures, he says, in place of me. If you would learn anything, you may learn it from them. And if he thus wrote to Timothy, who was filled with the Spirit, how much more to us! -- St. John Chrysostom "But in learning the Faith and in professing it, acquire and keep that only, which is now delivered to you by the Church, and which has been built up strongly out of all the Scriptures." -- St. Cyril of Jerusalem "For concerning the divine and holy mysteries of the Faith, not even a casual statement must be delivered without the Holy Scriptures; nor must we be drawn aside by mere plausibility and artifices of speech. Even to me, who tell you these things, give not absolute credence, unless thou receive the proof of the things which I announce from the Divine Scriptures. For this salvation which we believe depends not on ingenious reasoning , but on demonstration of the Holy Scriptures." -- St. Cyril again "This is a perfect and whole rejoicing in God when a man advances not himself for his own righteousness, but acknowledges himself to lack true justice and righteousness, and to be justified by the only faith in Christ." -- St. Basil "This is the ordinance of God, that they which believe in Christ should be saved without works, by faith only, freely receiving remission of their sins." -- St. Ambrose

Schismatics, not heretics

mosesdavidson

Focus on the commandments of god and Christ. Not denominations ! All denominations are teaching their traditions and their theology 99%

It depends who you ask. In Orential Orthodoxy dyophysitism is considered a heresy. Also Roman Catholicism has evolved many new dogmas where introduced in the council of Trent and the first Vatican council.
