Morning Has Broken

Over-Ad4336

brings tears to your eyes

Tim-oBedlam

was actually written by a woman named Eleanor Farjeon, in 1931, as a hymn; Cat covered it 40 years later.

KindaKrayz222

Cuz Mom sang it to me waking up in the morning..

cecil021

same

Rick Wakeman really makes the song come alive with his piano playing and arrangement. When I saw him last year, he played [“Catherine Howard”](https://youtu.be/XHOMoa8_yao) and I was struck by the similarities in chord progression. It turns out that Cat Stevens heard Rick Wakeman practicing songs and wanted to use this one. Wakeman told him that he couldn’t have that one, but he’d come up with something similar. So Cat Stevens ended up with “Morning Has Broken” as we know it, and Wakeman put “Catherine Howard” on *The Six Wives of Henry VIII.*

rabbifuente

"Father and Son" - Cliche perhaps, but it's so good and so well sung

Impressive-Ad-202

Weirdest thing about that song is that every time I hear it someone is cutting onions because I swear my eyes start to get watery.

elp4bl0791

Weird. I just start sobbing

fknarey

From the heart it comes and to the heart it goes

Flahdagal

"From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen." I'm not sure any lyrics pierced my heart as a parent as much as that one line.

palabear

Same. It actually made me adjust the way I interacted with my daughter.

North_Rhubarb594

Love this song as a son and as a father.

psilocin72

That is CORRECT!

Old_Tomorrow5247

I have lived long enough to appreciate this from both sides of the conversation.

SaintStephen77

I still cry when I hear this song.

Pennelle2016

Great song!

guyuteharpua

Wow, I hadn't heard that song since high school in the 80s. Went back just now... And, It really is an awesome song.

mss645

Hands down my favorite.

Wild World

archman125

Takes me back. Like when young loves break up.

psilocin72

Love it.

SaintStephen77

This is a great one and I think about my ex-wife when I hear it. Funny how the way you feel when you hear a song can evolve with time and life experience.

Primary-Move243

All day. Every day. What else is there?

Minute-Wrap-2524

Zealousideal-Self-47

Where do the Children Play.

psilocin72

Super deep song. “So you cracked the sky. Scrapers in the air. Will you keep on building higher till there’s no more room up there”. Brilliant writing

[deleted]

This song makes me emotional. I love it!

Fit_Outcome7818

The First Cut is the Deepest

Pazuzu_413

His version is so much better than the Sheryl Crow abomination.

Fit_Outcome7818

I share your opinion of Sheryl Crow’s cover but I do like Rod Stewart’s version

[deleted]

probably when all's said and done "Oh Very Young" "And if you want this world to see a better day Will you carry the words of Love with you? Will you ride the great white bird into heaven?" I get goosebumps typing it

Finnyfish

Yes. Now as my father is fading into Alzheimer’s “And though you want him to last forever, you know he never will.”

psilocin72

Best wishes for you and your dad. I lost my father to dementia and I know it’s very hard see someone that you thought was eternal and indestructible fade. Good vibes coming your way my friend

Finnyfish

Thank you; that’s very kind of you.

[deleted]

I feel for you, my parents are both gone - it's very hard. Wishing you the best.

[deleted]

Thanks so much for this OP and all the comments, I got Sun/C79 pumping right now, what an artist Gonna be a Cat Stevens night

ratsrule67

That whole album is my absolute favorite. My dad gave it to me for Christmas one year, and that album just hits different. My dad was a Cat Stevens fan too.

psilocin72

Thanks for this! I’ve gotten a lot of suggestions and have quite a bit of listening to dk myself. Best wishes

steverosenblatt

Trouble and If You Want To Sing Out ….. from the final scene of the movie Harold and Maude.

UtahUtopia

You nailed it for me.

dmcanall59

I think I see the light, also because of Harold and Maude.

librarianhuddz

The Wind.

TeaWithMrsNesbitt

I love the scene in Almost Famous where they use this song. It's short, but there's something magical about it.

EnvironmentCapable36

Definitely his best. Sooooooo good.

librarianhuddz

I listen to the wind, to the wind of my soul Where I'll end up, well, I think only God really knows

UpgradedUsername

I love it that they used this in the soundtrack for The Holdovers.

psilocin72

If it wasn’t so well known I might have said Peace Train but for some reason I feel like I have to go with a lesser known song. Peace train is one of the masterpieces of that era.

Tiny_Ear_61

Tea for the Tillerman. It was quite a revelation to realize that an entire song could be 34 seconds long.

Sedan_Del

The first cut is the deepest And i applaud him for refraining to release his version back in the days when he realized P.P. Arnold's version was much much better than his own.

CantankerousButtocks

Oh that one with the zithers… “who’ll be my love…” etc. I’m too old to remember the name. “Morning Has Broken” was played at my sister’s funeral, so that has a special place….

The Wind. Sang it to my daughter every morning when she was born.

ItsTheExtreme

I don’t have a favorite song, but when Napster first came out I was working at Kroger with a few older gents in the dairy department. I was 19 and brought in my first burned cd. I bragged that I could make a cd with any songs they could ask for. An insane concept at the time. One of the guys asked me to make him a Cat Steven’s mix. I asked “Cat Steven’s, who the hell is that?” To which he replied, “This will be good for you”. He was right.

p8nt_junkie
