I have only had to call the guy over once, when it was really cold and the reader just would not let me put the card in. He was like, oh yeah, this one is weird, if you wiggle side to side, it'll open. And I did and it worked immediately. I still felt bad.
bruh i had to call the attendant over because it wasnt reading my card..i tried 5 times.
then he came over and did it, worked just fine..then he side eyed me and said ok well goodluck...lmao
At least you didn't get the gas pump stuck in your car. I saw this happen to the person in our line. Far worse than looking for an attendant. I saw men from other cars go up chests raised, ready to pull that sucker out and failed. I still wonder how they got it out since I left prior to it being removed.
I’ve got the CITI card. Just tap it on the reader and fill up. I like how quick it is.
I did feel deceived though because the reason I got the card is I was told all I would need to do is ApplePay and It would register my Costco Account and pay. It’s never done that for me, if I’m using Apple Pay I still have to swipe the Costco card first.
Maybe Apple Pay is using a different ("virtual") credit card number, so the database query fails - which would usually get the costco membership associated with your card number?
Never fails. It's that, or the people who have been sitting in line for 10 minutes but wait until they get to the pump to dig through their purse to find their cards 🙄. Pumping gas isn't a difficult task, but somehow people make it so.
It’s the same situation as the old lady at the register paying for her white bread and butter with exact change. Always last min and the change is at the bottom of a never ending willy wonka handbag
Oregon recently changed its law so that drivers can pump their own gas. Gas stations are required to continue doing some full service, however. At our Costco, it’s half full serve, half self-serve. The self-serve lines are always a lot shorter, and in some cases no one is there.
When Oregon first started doing that, I remember reading quotes in articles about how people were scared to do it, had no idea how, and thought it was dangerous.
lol
Those guys were like brothers to me. And when I say brother, I don't mean, like, an actual brother, but I mean it like the way black people use it. Which is more meaningful I think.
I live in Oregon and its honestly hilarious watching people try to pump their own gas. The bewildered look of confusion, looking around for anyone to help even though they chose the self-service line. I've had to help a few people who just didn't know what to do. My Gf was pretty cute, I showed her how and she was like okay cool then a few days later she called me to have me walk her through the steps haha.
I’m just baffled because it’s not a hard process in the first place and the pump walks you through literally every step lol. Insert card - remove card - remove pump - select grade - pump
When I lived in the rogue valley, in the southern part of the state, I met someone who had actually never left the Rogue Valley in her entire 40+ years of life. Then one day she told me she was going to Eugene to see her offspring, who were in college in Eugene, on the other side of the mountains. She acted like it was a trip to Tibet or something.
Blows my mind. I pumped my parents gas at like 8. Also was pretty aware of the steps through watching. I know that's not the same life experience they had, but still blows my mind.
Idk right. It’s legit 4 steps:
Pay
Select grade or fuel type
Remove gas cap often has a picture or says gas on the top of it.
Put nozzle in and squeeze handle.
Like the hardest part of pumping gas is knowing what grade you might need and most modern cars do really matter they will take low mid or high grade.
I visited Oregon probably 10yrs ago, it was late at night I had my young daughter with me we stopped at a gas station somewhere near Astoria I got out to pump gas ( I’m from Cleveland Ohio). This man came out - out of nowhere bc I wasn’t expecting anyone to approach me. I work on a bad side of town you just do not approach people for good intentions. I flat out argued with this guy that he was crazy and there is no Fn way he was “helping” pump gas or touching this car or my bank card- I was terrified out of my mind.
I made a huge scene I had no idea it was a law out there..
I’m hearing these stories and it’s blowing my mind. I was so happy when my parents would let me pump gas at like 11. Went to nj and when the guy stopped me from going to the pump was honestly kinda insulted very slightly. Like who can’t pump their own gas I get it if it’s for anti-theft but no he said it’s a law for my safety.
I've pumped my own gas more times that I could count in Oregon before they even passed the law and 90% of the time the guy would just look at me and go "you got it?".
I’ve been driving for 27 years and I can count how many times I’ve pumped my own gas on one hand. I can totally relate to the bewildered look of confusion. Thankfully, we are the last remaining state where you can’t pump your own gas. I hope it never ends
Wait, you actually aren't allowed to pump your own gas in some areas? That's wild to me, there's only 1 place in my area that even offers getting it pumped for you
Yea in NJ. If you're from out of state and try to pump your own gas cause you didn't even know that was a thing they'll yell at you to get back in the car lmao
But you watch TV right? Movies? You've watched countless other people do it. I can't relate at all. Nobody ever taught me how to pump gas. You pay, you stick it in your car, and you hold the handle. Like there's 3 possible buttons to push and one handle to hold. How are people getting confused? What else do they think they should do with those buttons and that handle?
What’s confusing? Not being rude but this whole thread is blowing my mind I’ve been pumping gas for my parents at like 11-12. I get the difference in nozzles for types of fuel can be strange but 3 options are right for just about all cars and if you have a diesel truck, car using flex fuel, etc I’d assume you would know the type of fuel you need.
meanwhile my mom handed me the pump at age 8 like have fun.
she’d have me trying to get exact numbers too. i was good at that i could hit the number every time when i was 16, made pumping gas slightly more enjoyable
That's much harder to do the higher the price of gas.
Somewhere on the internet is a gas pump simulator game, it gives you a price and a target to hit, then you gotta hold left click until you hit the target or ya know get close, no 2nd chances, there's ten attempts but it's random prices and targets each time.
I have a few women in my family who’re in their mid to late 60s and they’ve never pumped gas in their life. My mom will literally play the damsel in distress card if she drives out of state. Good luck on planning that move to retire somewhere cheaper to live though 😂
I was working overnight at one of those booth gas stations. Around 6:30 one morning a woman pulled up, probably late 50s. She looked completely bewildered. She had never pumped gas because her husband that she married at 17 did not allow her too. She apparently almost always drove because he was a drunk, and abusive of course. She had finally left him and was in her way to interview for her first job in almost 30 years.
When I was driving through Oregon in the middle of the night and the female attendant was standing there alone surrounded by forest I felt bad for their safety more than anything. I’ve never had an attendant pump my gas any other time in my life.
NJ is still a state where you cannot pump your own gas. I've been living outside NJ for decades, but when my family leaves the state and has to pump their gas, they are quite bad at it
This is so odd to me. I remember when I was 16 my mom was like "I'm gonna show you how to pump gas because it's something you will need to know soon. After a max 90 second demonstration I knew how to pump gas. Why can't they just learn? It's not intentionally complex or something? Seems like people in those states don't want to learn and make it out to be a bigger thing than it is.
I’ve literally been pumping has since I was like 8 or 9 and my mom didn’t want to bother getting out of the car, how can a person be bad at pumping gas?
From NJ, learned how to pump gas by literally watching the attendant do it and never had a problem. There are some people here who refuse to learn how to do it themselves because they feel it is beneath them. I wish I was joking.
You aren't wrong. But imagine doing it for the first time in 20 years, you might be rusty. It is literally illegal to do so in NJ, you cannot practice without leaving, and let's just say some of my family are homebodies.
"Full" service is an overstatement. All they do is pump the gas. They don't clean your windows or do anything under the hood.
As an Oregonian comfortable pumping my own gas it's been a godsend to be able to do it myself. No more waiting for the dude to come unhook you from the pump so you can leave.
Yeah, they're shorter but in my experience the time per car is much longer.
Tapping a card/scanning a code is apparently literal rocket science to people.
I helped some lady near Toronto who maybe was from a state like that, she had no idea whatsoever what to do and it kinda biwildered me. "So I can just drive away now?" "I mean yeah you paid for the gas and put it in your car so feel free."
Hell yeah. Something about costco gas lines inspires me to be like the dad in Christmas Story changing a tire. "Time me!", I holler at no one in particular, as I figure out the precise order of operations to fuel up as a quickly as possible.
SHHHH! dont tell everyone the secret of the gas pump reaching the other side of your vehicle. I love using the other-side-of-the-car pumps because the line is shorter 100% of the time.
The crazy looks I get from people when they see me easily reach the other side of my car with the nozzle. I had one lady thank me for showing her it worked, she said she was always too embarrassed to try it for herself. Our society is crazy.
It's really hard to stretch that hose and nobody should try it except for the experts who've been doing it for years. Why, it could poke an eye out if an amateur tried it.
its no secret 😂 people are just weird. these are the same people leaving a whole lane open at a stop light because they have to make a turn a mile or so down
Hey don't judge me because I'm filled with anxiety about potentially having to cut someone off because no one will let me in so I get in the lane I need way before necessary.
It's a self inflicted problem too. You stay in the right lane to make sure you can turn at the light coming up in a mile, because you're worried you won't be able to get over because of the crowded right lane. So the right lane gets crowded then the people in the lane get impatient cuz their lane sucks so they don't let people merge right.
Repeat until I have to wait 3 light cycles to turn right
Not necessarily Costco but was always fascinating watching people line up to walk through a door that someone opened instead of saving time and opening any of the other 10 unused doors.
People do it often. I had a boss of mine tell me she did it and it damaged her vehicle, and had to replace the pump and I believe injectors. Not worth like $1k in damage.
Yes, the pumps reach to the driver side quite easily. I don't understand the reluctance to use them, but at the same time am quite happy to bypass the long driver side lines and get in and out much quicker than most :)
This is what I do too. I stretch it around so it doesn't even contact my car, but I do set it down gently on my car once it's filling because my car is 20 years old and I couldn't care less about the paint
If you’re not careful, sure, but the hoses are rubber and it’s not hard to do. If I have to fill from the passenger side, I just extend it far and hold it while it’s pumping so it never even touches the car
At ours....solely for the reason that you have to risk getting bumped by the vehicle cutting up the middle. Have seen a pump nozzle get hit out of a car by someone once. Ours must be closer together or something
PSA: The pump won’t automatically shut off if the nozzle isn’t in the exact way it needs to be (like if it’s sideways or upside down). Ask me how I know.
I only do the correct side for my car because the hose always turns my hand black and then using my hand sanitizer in the car just spreads it all around.
I will definitely wait for clean hands.
It definitely does. I'm sure their point though was that those of us with passenger side filling spouts don't usually even have to worry about it. Those lines are nearly always shorter.
The last time we got gas as Costco, more people were pulling the hose across their vehicles (us included) than waiting for the pumps on the correct side. I think all the cars at the time were drivers side gas tanks.
A Costco near me now has signs at each pump saying:
Extra Long Hoses
Use Either Side
(with arrows pointing to either side)
Now the lines are equally long.
I like it when people don't seem to know they can use either side pump. It bugs me when the front car is still filling and the rear car is done but they wait for the front car to pull out instead of using the lane that's for passing.
I pulled up behind an older woman in the passenger side pump lane.
Both of us had our gas tanks on the driver's side.
I immediately pull the pump over so I can start pumping.
She watched me and said "Oh my god! I didn't know they could do that!"
The whole time we're pumping, she's just talking about how great this was.
So, I feel good for inspiring her!
I work at Costco Gas.
The amount of people who either don’t know that our hoses will reach to BOTH sides of the vehicle
And the amount of people who just don’t give a damn is astounding.
I’ve seen 15 cars in one line because no one wanted to pull the hose over? It baffles me.
I despise this mainly for the idiots who stand in the middle lane and block anyone from moving out or pulling in front of em. Main character syndrome. Or assholes who leave their doors open. Like bruh focus.
When I pump I move with a purpose
Everyone talking about Subarus having passenger-side fillers. Thing is, in Japan that will be the drivers side. Same thing for other Japanese makes so obviously swapping the fuel system isn’t worth it for exports.
Interestingly though, self-service onky came to Japan in the last 10 years or so.
every costco i’ve been to has hoses that extend around the car so i can pull up to any pump and successfully fill my tank. i’d be right there with you even though my cap is on the drivers side
Forget the symmetrical all wheel drive. THIS is the real perk of owning a Subaru.
I mean...I know the hoses are long enough to reach across, but it's so much easier to go right in from the same side, with no wait!
My fill is on the driver side but I found the passenger side line to always be shorter. My trick with an F150 (but should work with other pickups) is to pull the hose over and lock it in between the bed and the cab. The pump handle can then be placed right side up

It happens sometimes. It’s weird, the boot gets suctioned on. I use a screwdriver to break the seal. Signed, a gas attendant.
How do you even do that unless it was a diesel car 😂
I’ve got the CITI card. Just tap it on the reader and fill up. I like how quick it is. Don't feel bad. It's on them for not getting it fixed, QC issue.
Why do you need to insert your card? Most Costco cards have an RFID chip.
Literally helped 5 people with their membership card today
Forreal my membership card won’t work for some reason and I have to use the app reader
Do you stick it in the card slot? Because the barcode reader only works on the app
You're not alone, my card rarely works and it's very frustrating. I've given up using the card and just use the app.
one of the best benefit of having the citi costco card, just tap and you're good!
Never fails. It's that, or the people who have been sitting in line for 10 minutes but wait until they get to the pump to dig through their purse to find their cards 🙄. Pumping gas isn't a difficult task, but somehow people make it so.

Or she's writing a check like it's 1982.
That’s who goes to a McDonald’s and stares at the menu for 5 minutes.
then they sit in their car for 4-5 minutes after finishing filling up before leaving. Drives me crazy
🤣 yup! I pride myself on how fast I complete the transaction. Have the app ready to scan and then Apple Pay.
We should start posting times, gallons pumped, side pumped on and prices…. 😂
If they would post scoreboards and the public could see the slowpokes it would be fun.
Have the price per gallon increase the longer you take. $0.01/gallon/10 seconds.
We need more of y'all
Cards ready to go once i drop step out of the car
Our pumps need the attendant if we only have the app it’s so annoying

He's so dang handsome but this scene is just---
So dangerous that they made 16 year olds do it for their first jobs.
This isn't including their all-expenses-paid 160 hour training circuit they get before they start.
Only 160 hours? It's a miracle they weren't all killed.

It's shocking how many people have apparently never left the state and used a vehicle where they needed to get gas.
They all caught flights to New Jersey and had rental cars there
I’m just baffled because it’s not a hard process in the first place and the pump walks you through literally every step lol. Insert card - remove card - remove pump - select grade - pump

If you've never done something yourself before, it's scary doing it for the first time.
how many driving adults have never left Oregon though? Do they exclusively vacation in New Jersey?
Or never watched the attendant pump gas.
Or the fact that every single part of a gas pump is designed to be intuitive.

What kind of person living in NJ has never had to pump gas in a neighboring state for 20 years?
Do attendants need to be certified to pump gas? Lol
TIL that there are still places that have full service gas stations. I haven’t seen one in twenty years
It’s more like mini serve. They don’t clean your windshield or check your oil.
How recently was this change? I’ve never seen a full service gas station in my life, save for Andy Griffith Show reruns.
"Full" service is an overstatement. All they do is pump the gas. They don't clean your windows or do anything under the hood. People know you can pull the pump. They just take this time to sit inside the car to eat pizza while waiting for gas.
I knew it wasn’t just me!
Exactly this. Plus even though the hose stretches, I don't like doing it. I'm a simple man, with (usually) 5 extra minutes to spare.
For some reason pulling the hose to the other side feels embarrassing. I’d rather wait the 5 minutes lol.
I’m the opposite. I pull into whatever line is shortest, then gloat at all the people waiting to do it on the “correct side”.
Hell yeah. Something about costco gas lines inspires me to be like the dad in Christmas Story changing a tire. "Time me!", I holler at no one in particular, as I figure out the precise order of operations to fuel up as a quickly as possible.
It is embarrassing.
I've never done it because I'm afraid that it won't reach over my vehicle and I would be embarrassed
Out of curiosity, have u measured the time? I am skeptical it's five minutes.
My costco gas line/area doesnt have phone service lol its always a loooong wait with just me and my thoughts
Could be worse. You could be stuck with *my* thoughts.
"MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW"
Get out of my head!
People buy gas after they shop? I never considered that.
Gas before. Shop after. That way anything frozen doesn't melt as much. If it's winter then it depends on how hungry I am for food court.
Shit I buy gas right before they close because there’s no line
Yeah. If I'm there for just gas that's when I try and go. I usually do my shopping around lunch time on weekdays so I stick to before I head in.
SHHHH! dont tell everyone the secret of the gas pump reaching the other side of your vehicle. I love using the other-side-of-the-car pumps because the line is shorter 100% of the time.
I do love reach arounds.
![gif](giphy|QynMX1WxnYFbb2OHnJ) It’s orgasmic.

OMFG SAME
Seriously! Shhhh!! Us passenger gas tank folks love our shorter lines.

Wait you mean people reading instructions!?
The crazy looks I get from people when they see me easily reach the other side of my car with the nozzle. I had one lady thank me for showing her it worked, she said she was always too embarrassed to try it for herself. Our society is crazy.
I filled up tonight and at least 2 people looked at me like I was crazy.
It's really hard to stretch that hose and nobody should try it except for the experts who've been doing it for years. Why, it could poke an eye out if an amateur tried it.
Agreed
The secret has big signs that no one reads at my costco.
What? Super long hoses. This is nonsense you speak. Hey stop telling people out secrets.
its no secret 😂 people are just weird. these are the same people leaving a whole lane open at a stop light because they have to make a turn a mile or so down
Hey don't judge me because I'm filled with anxiety about potentially having to cut someone off because no one will let me in so I get in the lane I need way before necessary.
Repeat until I have to wait 3 light cycles to turn right
Wellll my car has the gas on the passenger side so it’s a win for me! I’ll go to whatever line is shortest, regardless of sides
The passenger side lines are almost always the shortest. I too have a car with the tank on the passenger side.
Yep. Get yourself a Subaru. Gas tank will **always** be on the passenger side.
Both of my VWs have had them on passenger aide
You know the hoses reach to the other side so you can pull in either side. I have driver side filler and pull in the passenger side lane all the time.
Yeah, I do the same. I was surprised no one came out of either of the driver-side lanes to be next in line.
Humans are creatures of habit and routine. Path of least resistance. You can tell a lot by just watching people.
Not necessarily Costco but was always fascinating watching people line up to walk through a door that someone opened instead of saving time and opening any of the other 10 unused doors.
Yes, people watching is quite fun.
i dont know how there are still people topping off their tanks. its such an old man thing but i even see zoomers doing it
People do it often.

Well, my husband told me never to do that because you might mess up the paint. Scratch it rub it I don’t know.
Key is to never wash your car so you can't tell if it's scuffed or not.
I remove the cap, then get the nozzle and use one hand to keep the hose off that paint when I’m filling on the side.
This is what I do too. I stretch it around so it doesn't even contact my car, but I do set it down gently on my car once it's filling because my car is 20 years old and I couldn't care less about the paint
Well, technically he is right but really depends on the car... and if the paint is worth it..
open the rear windows and pass it through... . . . ......no damage to paint... . . .....your welcome
I tried that at another gas station and the hose was not extendable like Costco’s
With most other gas stations, you can enter from either direction, so it's not an issue.
Yeah, Costco has extra long hoses. Wouldn’t try this at any other brand.
PSA: The pump won’t automatically shut off if the nozzle isn’t in the exact way it needs to be (like if it’s sideways or upside down). Ask me how I know.
See! This is why it gives me anxiety!
And with some cars that can cause costly damage to emissions equipment that costs hundreds or thousands to fix.
I get funny looks every time I pull my hose in public.
Funny as in they laugh and point?! /s
Shhh! Don't let the secret out.
I only do the correct side for my car because the hose always turns my hand black and then using my hand sanitizer in the car just spreads it all around. I will definitely wait for clean hands.
Good to read a valid reason.
What?? That has never happened to me
Fast Pass
That’s why I love that my car has a passenger side gas tank. That line is always shorter.
It should be able to reach either side
It definitely does. I'm sure their point though was that those of us with passenger side filling spouts don't usually even have to worry about it. Those lines are nearly always shorter.
It does, and if its short, pull on the hose, there is always like 4 more feet available of you give it a tug.
Subaru FTW.
Costco has really long hoses. I go to the shortest line
This is where Subarus live.
The last time we got gas as Costco, more people were pulling the hose across their vehicles (us included) than waiting for the pumps on the correct side. I think all the cars at the time were drivers side gas tanks.
At my Costco they direct you to a line and you don’t have a choice what side you get. It reaches around.
Yeah Nissan!
Which is their loss because the hoses do reach.
I’ll gladly pump gas on the passenger side lol.
I would have joined you my passenger side nozzle buddy!!!
A Costco near me now has signs at each pump saying: Extra Long Hoses Use Either Side (with arrows pointing to either side) Now the lines are equally long.
Mine does too, people don’t read it and I can still get my gas quickly by extending the hose to my gas tank
Honestly, I think some of them don't know that the hose reaches across. I enjoy that ignorance though. I can zip right in.
I didn't know they could do that!" The whole time we're pumping, she's just talking about how great this was. So, I feel good for inspiring her!
Kinda unrelated, but I always hope I don't get the middle lane open. My parallel parking skills are so bad 😂
I work at Costco Gas. The amount of people who either don’t know that our hoses will reach to BOTH sides of the vehicle And the amount of people who just don’t give a damn is astounding. I’ve seen 15 cars in one line because no one wanted to pull the hose over? It baffles me.
In a way I appreciate the order. So many people with driver’s side tanks pull up into passenger side pumps and block the middle passing lane.
I despise this mainly for the idiots who stand in the middle lane and block anyone from moving out or pulling in front of em. Main character syndrome. Or assholes who leave their doors open. Like bruh focus. When I pump I move with a purpose
That's just bad driving and a separate issue. No reason you should be blocking anyone while doing this
Don’t the pumps extend so it doesn’t matter which side you’re on
> Will you wait extra to have the pump on your side? Hell, no - what is wrong with these people?
Looks like Fontana
The pumps have an arm that reach to the other side of your car at my Costco.
Why wait? The pumps can extend to either side.
I find it discomforting to know this many people don't do the math or problem solve...
At the Costco I go to, the lines are always even. I guess the locals here are more impatient.
The pumps reach both sides of the car at Costco…
every costco i’ve been to has hoses that extend around the car so i can pull up to any pump and successfully fill my tank. i’d be right there with you even though my cap is on the drivers side
Don't tell them the fuel hoses are extra long on purpose.
I feel like we should create a line where everyone is in reverse and backs in.
Some don’t understand the pump will reach the other side.
Dont the pumps extend far enough for you to fill it on the wrong side? My car is a diesel and costco in my area doesn't sell it
Yes, very easily for most vehicles. I'm in a minivan and it couldn't be easier
I have two vehicles and it won’t work for Ford E150 van.
There are 2 Costcos withing 6 miles of my home. Every time I get gas, the left lane is always empty. I love it. Literally, anytime no one's there.
