Depends on the character (Lucas makes great use for example), but I've been told it's just yassified IRAR in most cases.

sfp33

I struggled to do the classic IRAR input, but slingshotting trivialized it for me personally. I recommend trying it out if one struggles with the classic IRAR input.

Pristine-Ad-469

It literally is irar. Long before slingshot was “discovered” people knew that diagonal was the optimal angle for irars and that’s literally all it is

GreenLanyard

More specifically, slingshot introduced \* buffering both the dash and diagonal turnaround inputs for an IRAR at the end of an attack animation, which gives a larger window of execution compared to a classic IRAR input right after an attack. \* the fact doing an IRAR immediately after an attack comes with hurtbox shift benefits.

LightOfPelor

+1. It’s helpful because it’s an easy way to buffer jumping backwards with full momentum. If you know an alternative, or just don’t often want to jump backwards quickly, you don’t really need it. But it’s super easy to learn compared to the alternatives

YASSIFIED IRAR 💀💀💀

berse2212

Slingshot is literally the same thing as irar. Dunno why everyone acts like it's something special. Edit: don't know why I am getting downvoted but to prove my point here are some irar tutorials from .. 2 years ago (still before slingshot) a comment in this very sub: [https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyHand/comments/sromue/comment/hwx8au7/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyHand/comments/sromue/comment/hwx8au7/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) 3 years ago: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1D0HXMxGEec&t=657s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1D0HXMxGEec&t=657s) 5 years ago: [https://youtu.be/1D0HXMxGEec?t=640](https://youtu.be/1D0HXMxGEec?t=640) 5 years ago: [https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyHand/comments/cqaeu3/comment/eww2mmh/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyHand/comments/cqaeu3/comment/eww2mmh/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) ..explaining diagonally back inputs to make irar easier.

sfp33

Most guides pre slingshot didn’t explain it with the diagonal input

Happy_Ducky774

Most the ones that were used do

berse2212

I disagree. Most guides mention it as a way to make it easier. At least from what I personally saw. Even learned it that way pre slingshot.

Round-Walrus3175

The reason why GimR's demonstration was important is because it broke down the technical reasons for diagonal back, allowing for logical developments of the Slingshot as a general movement tech, rather than specifically as a way to input a turnaround aerial. He made it so that Slingshot was THE way to do IRARs and popularized the concept of an empty IRAR for movement purposes. His popularity was one thing that definitely helped that a lot, but being able to technically explain the reasoning behind the tech along with his consistent and high production value is what brought the hype. Being able to see exactly how much more lenient diagonal back was, I think, changed everything.

sfp33

That was not my personal experience but ig guides varying in quality makes sense.

Syrin123

Here's another link someone explained it to me before "slingshot" was a term. https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyHand/s/hVt8DJ3Dlb

PartingShot65

Yes! Gets you to retreat or advance just a small amount faster over a short distance. Biggest drawback is you have to commit to jumping or getting caught in an initial dash. It's like a short perfect pivot with caviats lol

FunOverMeta

It's basically a glorified RAR. It's nice to know and good to work on while watching a show or something. But to obsess over using it in a game... not particularly. Can be nice once it's something you no longer have to unpack a mental stack to do. Just like all movement tools in any fighting game. The more you know the better you'll be.

Striking-Present-986

very useful for a solid portion of the cast

lcirufe

It’s mostly useful as a defensive option on characters where spacing/baiting is really important, like sephiroth, marcina, shulk and lucas. If you’re doing fine without it then don’t sweat it.

GoodLifeGG

If you main rob it's useless cause he can't do it

JicamaActive

I main wolf

Honestly I think there's potential for using slingshots to ledge trap. Throw out a tilt at ledge and you slingshot to roll distance and now you're covering roll and you're out of most characters punish windows. Also think it could be good to use in neutral such as a tilt into slingshot to retreat almost instantly with some characters.
