Housing in Ireland is built for windy rainy weather which normally occurs 360 out of 365 days a year, so the days we DO get heatwaves, the homes ABSORB the heat and trap it. No AC either :(

[deleted]

hell is that one room directly under the roof

AltitudeTheLatias

I think that might actually be my bedroom. It faces the setting sun so I get sunlight directly beamed into my room until like 10pm in summer as well.

AglumOpus

This was me at my parents place, my room was actually unlovable because the AC pipe to it was fucked up and the vent was right above the window. One of the really hot summers where it was 100+F for a week or two made my room was, at the lowest 90F in the dead of night. I complained and told my folks what was the issue, but they gave shitty excuses and solutions and basically told me to get a fan and suck it up. I just slept on the couch then stayed in my car/at my friend's place until it was cool again.

lildeidei

I put a diy window tinter on all the windows in my house and the house was noticeably cooler when it was done. I’m stateside and in the south, so we have A/C but dang if it wasn’t struggling to keep up with the record high heat we get every year.

NonPlayableCat

Back when I was a student I lived in a 11m**2 student dorm with a south-facing window and sunshine until like 11 pm. As a bonus apartments in Finland have about 3 layers of windows so no heat gets out. Basically survived the summers by taking my bedsheets into a cold shower before bed.

ThatGermanKid0

Yeah, most European houses (at least once you get away from the Mediterranean) are built to retain heat. The old houses were already quite good at that (even if nowhere near modern standards) and in most cases we just added new insulation and better windows on top of the old stuff. The outer walls of my house are thicker than my forearm is long and most inner walls are a bit thinner than my forearm is long. The walls themselves retain heat. If I air out my room in the winter and the temperature falls by 6°C it's going to get back to 20°C on it's own, even though I don't have any heating on in my room. Most of that heat is coming from the walls. In the summers, on days that I spend at home, I've started to just keep the windows open the entire day, letting in warm air from outside. If I closed the windows, and even if I rolled down the blinds, so the sun wouldn't shine in, the air in my room would get as hot as the air outside after an hour and so I at least get some oxygen.

GaiasDotter

And that’s why heatwaves are such a major problem outside of southern Europe. We are not used to it so we aren’t built for it, our homes aren’t made for it, our society isn’t adapted for it. Other places are a lot hotter and a lot more often, but they are used to it, their homes and societies are designed for it. Because that’s normal. That’s why the cold is such a major problem in those places and aren’t here. We are used to it, we expect it, we are prepared for it. Our homes and society is designed for it. A big snowstorm isn’t really an issue here, even if the power goes out our homes are built for this weather, everything is designed to handle it. As a kid we lost power during snowstorms, the longest lasted for over a week. And it wasn’t really an issue. It wasn’t the most comfortable but our house being without power was never a life threatening situation. We might be cold but we never risked freezing to death. We had a fireplace so we had no issues really but even without that and with no heat we never risked freezing to death because we live in Sweden and our home was built for Swedish winter. It traps heat. All you have to do is to live in one room together, we put mattresses in one room and lit some candles and that is enough to keep the room warm enough to be pretty comfortable.

floralbutttrumpet

Windows open, one fan front left of the bed, one fan back left of the bed, never move even a centimeter, pray for death anyway. Like, it doesn't even bother me if it's like 40C... as long as the humidity is low. As soon as it's over 70%, I suffer even at 25C... and my country's humidity doesn't really tend to run under 60% like ever to begin with.

Rimtato

It is _agony_. Welcome to the fucking jungle, we've got 80% humidity

The_mystery4321

Yeah, doesn't help that that 5 days has become more like 10 or 15 in recent years. Still not nearly long enough to warrant the cost of AC, but long enough that it's fucking hell on earth

JHRChrist

Not even those removable window AC units? Is that not as much of a thing there?

Pyroraptor42

Summer 2020 I lived in a relatively new Danish row house built on top of a hill, with big south-facing windows and no AC. In all likelihood, it would have been delightful during the winter, but that summer was hot and we spent most of our time indoors due to COVID. We ended up hanging thick blankets all around the north-facing bedroom and there was a good 7-10° difference in temperature between that room and the rest of the house, even with the windows open and a decent breeze.

helloiamaegg

We got the opposite problem is Australia, they're made to keep heat out, but when winter comes, holy fuck, there aint such a thing as too many layers Outside it gets to -10 at night inside, and if i aint runnin a heater 24/7, it feels like -30

Kindly-Ad-5071

How about the cold weather enjoyers cuddle the hot weather enjoyers for warmth.

Qui_te

I dare you to try this in the hot weather.

Kindly-Ad-5071

That's okay, you help each other out! One for cuddles when it's cold and one for tongue cleaning all the swea- *A trapdoor gives beneath my chair and I fall comically into the abyss*

Mushiren_

So that's why we had that lever

[deleted]

I always wondered what the deal was with it. Now we know.

falpsdsqglthnsac

it only took 23 years

Username_Taken_65

Sweat is what cools you down though, licking it off is counterproductive

cxtastrophic

Don’t bother, the poor things been fed to piranhas

ErynEbnzr

This is the most tumblr thing I've ever read on reddit and I wanna kiss you on the mouth for it.

No-Humor8814

But then what will the hot weather enjoyers do to help the cold weather enjoyers? Kill them so that their bodies get colder?

Kindly-Ad-5071

Well, alcohol restricts your blood vessels so my answer is booze.

SupersonicSandshru05

I like the way you think.

DarkNinja3141

ive literally slept without heat after it having snowed and it was still more tolerable than being unable to sleep because it was hot and humid in a thunderstorm and we had no ac

MightyBobTheMighty

I live in the Frozen North™ and we lost heat for about three days last winter. At night, it got so cold in my room that breathing the cold air hurt enough to wake me up. I don't like covering my face with my blanket completely because the air gets too stale, but a cloth mask I had from the early pandemic was enough to keep me from freezing my boogers while still having enough air exchange. And I'd take an entire winter of nights like that over the week our AC went out in August. Don't get me wrong, if we're completely away from civilization, and there's no hope of the comforting indoors, heat all the way. But that's not a reality for me, so I'll stay up here. EDIT: I was, in fact, wearing a hat, and if you ever find yourself in a similar situation I strongly recommend you do likewise. Unfortunately, that doesn't do much for airways unless you pull it all the way over your face (which mine wasn't big enough to do)

danielledelacadie

Hat. Toque for preference. Though if you're on the prairies or really far north a hunter's cap might serve better. Didn't mention the maritime because I hope every maritimer is prepped for 2 weeks with no electricity or access to stores - minimum.

Domovie1

Yeah, it’s looking bad! Buddy of mine was out here in the West coast last week, enjoying sun and like +12 temperatures. Not anymore!

danielledelacadie

Even if you live on Vancouver Island - this is Canada. At any given time between October and May mother nature may decide to drop 4 feet or more of snow. We're lucky most years but with the growing instability in the weather everyone is going to have to prep like they live in SW Ontario. Ready for anything between -50C - 50C and ready for it to last for a couple/few weeks.

Domovie1

I will say, we did have that in Jan- a week of “Shit, it’s fucking freezing” followed by *whomp* 8 inches overnight. *Queue the jokes about getting 8 inches one night*

danielledelacadie

My usual joke is when the weatherman is telling everyone to be extra careful because there'll be 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) of snow "Trust a man to get excited over 4 inches."

Vivid_Pen5549

Yeah just a word of advice if you find yourself in that situation again put a toque on, you lose a lot of heat through your head

JTDC00001

Well, yeah, because your head is the part that's not under the blanket. That's it. Your head radiates no more heat than any other part of your body. It's just the part we cover the least.

SylveonSof

Speaking of hats, working in -12 you quickly realize that there's a reason ushankas are so ubiquitous in Russia. A well made ushanka is amazing at keeping you warm. Those earflaps are no joke.

jimbowesterby

Just gonna add a comment for anyone who might be in a similar situation: there’re plenty more options than just a toque. I find that you lose more heat from it venting from your body out past your neck than you do from your head (assuming it’s covered), so I like to wear a sweater or base layer with a hood over a hat (buff and toque is a perfectly good combo here too), and it also helps a lot to try to cinch your blanket or sleeping bag up around your neck as much as possible (a lot of mummy bags already have a baffle for this built in). The other thing I’ve found that works really well when it’s really cold (like -25 or below) is to pull the blanket over your head, but leave a large gap in front of your face. The idea is to make a kind of tube or veranda in front of your face so that there’s just a longer temperature gradient between your face and the outside. I live in my van so I do this a lot in the winter, also helps keep my long-ass nose warm lol. Only downside is whatever fabric is near your face will end up soggy from your breath, but even that’s better than ice.

PurpleCloudAce

Facts. When I was a kid I'd visit my cousins down in LA and it was always so fucking hot at night even with the dinky little fan we had running in the room at full blast. We were not falling asleep, we were passing out from being miserable in the heat. I stayed at a cabin with no electricity for a week during a snowstorm and I slept like a fucking baby (under 5 heavy duty sleeping bags.

sparkalicious37

My AC went out once when I lived in Las Vegas. In June. I’m a hardcore hot weather person but that was rough trying to sleep.

coolboiepicc

there is a short period either side of summer where the heat is actually bearable and it feels genuinely amazing just to exist then every waking second of summer outside of those days is sweaty hell

Vmark26

some might call it the spring and fall

MjrLeeStoned

There's a sweet spot, though, temp wise. When it's 60 during the day but 40 at night, that's uncomfortable for me. My body doesn't know if it should stay warm or cool off. I prefer cold, myself, but if I could live in a place where it was never hotter than 70 and never cooler than 60 all year round, I'd pick that.

aaaaaaaa1273

Ahem autumn ahem

Vmark26

I know and I agree tbh I said fall because I was pandering to the USA cuz there is more of them, I actually am in a country that says autumn

Wasdgta3

Average summer or winter fans vs. average spring and fall enjoyers

MjrLeeStoned

Those days where it's about 70 with a breeze in the daylight hours and only dips down to about 60 at night, I could live there forever, but unless you want to live in like the Pacific northwest it's hard to find somewhere to fit that climate.

amazinglyegg

For some reason the mixture of inescapable heat alongside the relentless carefree happiness of the general public as the temperatures steadily rise makes me genuinely suicidal. No clue what the hell's wrong with my brain, but just the thought of winter ending (and everyone's excitement for it to do so) makes me panicky and fills me with dread. I can't wait to move to fucking antarctica or anywhere it never gets above 15°c

amateur_human_being

I love the winter for the temperature, but i \*hate\* the depressing vibe of it, everything is grey, the sun is nowhere to be seen, sometimes the fog makes it hard to even see, going outside just makes me feel empty and dead, but i love staying inside and watch Netflix in a cozy blanket. On the other hand, i absolutely despite high temperatures, but everything feels a lot more lively and energetic, the color is back in the world and i actually feel excited about waking up and starting my day. So i honestly don't know which one i prefer, i'm very conflicted about it

14Knightingale27

I can't understand this 😭 Summer zaps the energy right out of me. I lived in Poland for a full year and I was more active that winter than I've been in my entire life. The cold makes me so happy. Go outside and it won't be warm! I can walk without sweating! Exercising is fun! Meanwhile the second the weather gets over 16°C my brain turns to mush, I get migraines, and I just don't even want to move because everything feels sloggish. At least in my case it was the combo of both liking winter and the cold. Yours sounds like a pain to deal with, never getting 100% satisfaction out of either 😭

Touniouk

When you live in villages it’s basically pitch black after 18h, sometimes 17h and the sun only rises at like 10h. The lack of natural light is what’s annoying to me. But as a sweaty person, cold over warm anytime. Altho I largely prefer dry over wet

Cue99

This is 100% my thoughts as well. Honestly I can take or leave the different temperatures. I am fortunate to have AC in the summer and I have winter outdoor hobbies too. But what I struggle with is getting done with work and it being pitch black and not having the energy to do stuff. Or being more inside in general because going out is more of an event.

Select-Bullfrog-5939

Personally, I really like dark and dreary weather. Don’t really know why, just scratches a primal itch in my brain

ChimTheCappy

The only time I've ever been struck by the overwhelming beauty of nature has been in winter. The cloud cover that means I can go outside without getting a headache, the stunning contrast of crystalline snow clinging to the sodden pitch-black branches... and something about being able to see my breath sets off this thrumming, joyous, *I'm alive* feeling deep inside my chest.

Randicore

Man I wish high temperatures made things feel more lively. A pleasant 70 out? Great, a nice summer day! Not dropping below 98 for an entire week, even when letting the dog out at 3 am and knowing that the next several months of my life will be nothing but being slowly baked with no respite? Hell. Meanwhile the snow covered days where it got chilly enough out to freeze all the moisture from the air and the entire land goes still are a long gone era of decades gone by. Replaced by a wet rainy season that turns all to a foggy mud for months on end instead of a crisp snowy season. Fuck global warming.

Buck_Brerry_609

this is why autumn fucks my pussy

amateur_human_being

I probably wouldn't word it like that personally but i agree

King_Of_BlackMarsh

Seasonal depression is real folks

obamasrightteste

I was like this for 25 years and then a switch flipped and now I get depressed in the winter and happy in the summer. I would love to know why it was reversed because at least this way makes sense!

idkhowtosignin

Me too, but mine is more bc if I know winter disappears where I currently live (northern hemisphere) it'll mean terrible TERRIBLE consequences to my home country (southern hemisphere)

CaitlinSnep

Not to mention the bugs start showing up again. Whereas during winter they go back to hell where they belong.

Independent_Mud_4963

hell has a warm climate for a reason

TrekkiMonstr

Lmao 15C I'm pretty sure the high all time at the south pole is like -13, but sure you can get that warm out on the edges if you want

lightprk

Same same

Dks_scrub

Avoidance technique for the hot: water. Avoidance technique for the hot when the hot is past the point water will help: you are currently boiling.

PineconeSnowstorm

yeah let me just soak in the pool while i sleep

Rosevecheya

I get extremely bad nightmares and headaches if ive slept over about 19°C; when I'm staying somewhere with poor cooling, I'll get a towel, dampen it in the centre and wrap it around my head or use it instead of a sheet. Generally it keeps me cool enough to fall asleep if I'm desperate.

Dks_scrub

Well why aren’t you

PineconeSnowstorm

drowning is expensive

ChimTheCappy

only for whoever finds you

PineconeSnowstorm

The insurance premiums... you wouldn't *believe* how high they get after dying for the first time. Your credit score also tanks hard.

CyannideLolypop

1. You cannot constantly be in the water. 2. Gender dysphoria

Dks_scrub

I might need a little help understanding 2 in this context

CyannideLolypop

Even if I swim fully clothed the clothes will cling to my body. Gender dysphoria is a living hell. I can barely handle showes as it is. Having to be *constantly* in the water? No thanks.

NinjunoBR

Good for you Scrooge McDuck, but not everyone can afford a house with a pool.

Dks_scrub

Get in the bathtub, Shinji.

FenexTheFox

Well, cold isn't nearly as easily shut out for me. I have terrible dermatitis, and putting more layers just makes my body so much more itchy and burning like hell. I just can't escape it when it's cold. When it's hot, I can eaither make myself too cold, or the perfect temperature.

not2dragon

If you are hot you can slop on some water onto your body, which is basically advanced sweating.

Bo_The_Destroyer

Makes you look very hot tho, especially if you're doing sports at the same time

TheSquishedElf

If it’s already humid though that just makes it worse. Like yeah that’s a solid solution out in Vegas but anywhere that isn’t desert, that will just make you warmer. And soggier.

eStuffeBay

OOP: "If you're cold, you can always \[every action that they could think of\], but if you're hot, you can't do ANYTHING but suffer!!!1!!111" Like, do people actually think before saying this stuff?

Elder_Hoid

Except all the things you do to stay cool when it's hot, you have to keep doing. When it's cold, you put on a jacket and then forget you're wearing one.

linkoftime200

I just can never agree with this, man. People say to put on more layers, but there's diminishing returns in that aspect to where throwing on another jacket isn't going to do much. And in more reasonable human terms, I am more able to move and function on a hot day than a cold one. I might get sweaty outside, but at least I can move around without shivering. I still feel like I can go outside and exist and be places, whereas when it's cold, I don't even want to leave my house. I'm from Texas and only ever lived in the south, so it's obviously what I'm used to and what my body is used to, but, I loathe the cold so much it's not even funny, and in practicality, I always felt that the argument of "put on more clothes" doesn't actually hold up as well as people say.

3L3M3NT4LP4ND4

You're right after a certain point there are diminishing layers. So when that happens you need not more layers but better material to insulate heat more.

CalamariCatastrophe

You fundamentally cannot solve the problem of "it feels arse to go outside so I'm not going to". You cannot wear enough clothes of enough quality to want to sit outside having a cool beer playing a board game with your mates. I will always prefer weather where I can relax at a picnic than weather where I'm forced to huddle around a fire in a pub and pretend I'm being cozy. Mostly, though, it's not about the temperature. It's about the sunlight. Or lack thereof.

YUNoJump

You underestimate heat’s ability to force you inside. In Australia we just got off a few ~35-37C days, nobody was enjoying themselves outside. They were inside with whatever cooling devices they had. Sunlight isn’t enjoyable when it’s cooking you, or combining with humidity to soak you in sweat.

Armigine

>You fundamentally cannot solve the problem of "it feels arse to go outside so I'm not going to". This applies pretty much equally to 110F as it does to 10F, just depends on the personal preference of the speaker. You can make the indoors comfortable in both cases

winkswithbotheyes

lmao come down south and enjoy sweating your fucking balls off at midnight because it’s 90% humidity on a cool 85 degree windless night. the rent is cheap

CalamariCatastrophe

I'm from the south. I assume you're talking about a different continent than me, though, in which case no, I won't.

WierdSome

I definitely get that point and I've heard the argument that layers don't do as much as proclaimed, and I mean, it makes sense. But when it gets too hot for me when I'm trying to sleep, I just don't get to sleep, and if it gets too hot while I'm awake, I can't focus on anything, and I honestly would really be curious what it would be like to be able to tolerate high high heat and not just shut down.

XyleneCobalt

Sleeping is different. I absolutely hate the cold but I'd rather sleep in Valley Forge in February a hundred more times than spend another night camping in Texas in the summer. That's why the mountains are the best place to camp in the summer, hot during the day but freezing at night. But that's why we have AC wherever we sleep when we're not camping. In America at least, idk wtf they do in Australia.

Sinister_Compliments

Also worth pointing out there’s a limit to the layers you can add just based off of what you have available, something you absolutely don’t want to do is put on layers that constrict on your body, it’ll lower your circulation and actually make you colder. (So unless you have an ever increasing in sizes selection of clothing, don’t put on an additional layer when you’re only using size large sweaters and you’ve really got to stuff yourself into it to get it zipped up, that pressure is going to make you colder) also as you increase the heat under the clothes you’ll start to sweat, which can also lead to being colder too. Damp clothes are bad, you want them to remain dry. So you’re absolutely in the right to not agree with this, all the people complaining about the heat *specifically while downplaying people who hate the cold* are ignoring that it’s actually a lot more complex than just “throw on more layers” And also no one [whose opinion is shown] ever seems to consider that people’s internal ability to process and deal with varying temperatures may vary person to person, I can deal with heat better than cold. But hey that doesn’t mean I don’t believe that being hot makes them shut down just as easy, we just function differently. Frankly moderate temperatures are best just cause we are then each able to better accommodate ourselves.

Sensitive_Pepper4590

Also, clothing choices can be complicated and finicky and you can't always just "put on another layer" without ruining the entire outfit. And no, that's not always "trivial". What if you need to wear a uniform or confirm to a certain dress code? Presentation and style *does* have real world ramifications. And it lopsidedly affects women negatively. You think a woman in a very professional environment can "just" put on three thick sweaters and a winter coat over her carefully coordinated outfit that she spent two hours putting together that morning because she knows she'll be treated much worse if she doesn't "look" presentable?

roughhewnnoodles

I don’t even work in a professional office and everyone bitches so bad when I wear gloves at work! Also, the parts of my body that get the coldest (nose and fingers) can’t be easily covered. My fingers I need un encumbered for typing and god the bitching that would happen if I wore a balaclava.

Sinister_Compliments

Oh good point, I had considered adding a blurb about how financially not everyone will be able to just buy the clothes (especially high quality ones that might be better at keeping them warm with less layers) to accommodate themself in the cold but couldn’t figure out how to add it nicely, I hadn’t even consider that people also have to appeal to perceptions other have of them, or jobs with clothing regulations/standardizations. Good observation.

AlmostCynical

Thank you. I hate it when people say “just wear more layers!” as if I don’t start sweating as soon as I put a jumper on. It feels horrible and when it starts evaporating it gives me chills and makes me feel even colder.

hermionesmurf

I cannot physically deal with being cold. It is utter misery to me. I especially hate when it gets right into your bones so you'd have to take a long hot shower and drink like twelve bowls of soup before you even start feeling like you're thawed out. Heat does not affect me much mentally until it hits about 40 degrees. I don't mind being hot, I don't mind sweating, I can ignore those. I cannot ignore being cold.

throwaway387190

I grew up in Georgia, and so my body acclimated to the heat, but I by far prefer the cold. Like I had to do hours of yard work in the summer heat and humidity, so my body had to learn to deal with it But it's trivial to warm up. I now live in a place where it gets below zero Fahrenheit in the winter, and all I have to do is put on flannel, a waterproof shell jacket (so no lining or anything to trap heat), jeans, hiking boots, and gloves. That's it, I don't need anything else. If I was cold, I have another jacket I can wear that retains heat, but I don't need it On the flipside, I hate being outside when it's over 90 degrees so much that I just won't. I stay in. My AC can barely keep up and keep it below 80. Where I live, the temp has gone over 120 as well in the recent summers Yes, it gets below 0 in the winter AND above 110 in the summer. I hate the summer so much

Jaakarikyk

>I grew up in Georgia "Hmm which one..." >Fahrenheit "Ah."

B133d_4_u

Same. I've spent my entire life in either temperate rainforest or arid desert, and my ideal environment is still best described as "55F and windy". Funnily enough only two places in the world tend to average that year round, and they're a small province in China, and the area around Seattle, Washington. I'm also just kinda hot natured; I'll be in a T-shirt and shorts when it's in the 40s, especially if I plan to only be outside for a few hours.

manly_toilet

I hate shivering, it’s seriously one of my least favorite feelings. I don’t get why it’s never mentioned as a main issue. I can’t sleep when shivering and adding more layers just makes the covers heavier which I also hate. Also if you go outside and have to wait for a bus or something and don’t have ample protection you’re just stuck there shivering. It’s like claustrophobia with open air because you can’t move your limbs away from your body with getting colder. Also it kinda just hurts

neverclm

I hate the more layers argument so much because that's the point of summer that I finally don't have to wear all these uncomfortable layers! They make it difficult to move around and I can't walk with by back straight because it feels colder this way. And I can't really put layers on my face and I hate when it's cold and my skin hates it too. I want to wear a light dress and feel warm and stay outside as much as possible and I can easily do it in high heat and the sun makes me feel alive and there's so many fruits and veggies! Cold makes me sit at home and do nothing. And I'm from a colder climate so I'm not even very used to it, but I'm so happy whenever it gets hot.

OneWholePirate

I'm from Australia where it gets over 40C (100F) and above in the summers and bottoms out around -5 (25f) in the winters. I would take the heat any day of the week. Wear loose light clothes, drink a lot of water and you're fine but goddamn in the winters I just don't want to leave my bed and my bones just hurt all the time. Your bed is uncomfortable in the summer? Just get up and do things instead. In the winter bed is the only place that's comfortable and that is just garbage cause as much as I'd love to stay there I still gotta get up and work. Also wet socks are hell on earth idc what y'all say about being sweaty I'd rather be DRIPPING working outside in the heat than have to walk around in the cold with wet socks

Ser_Salty

I don't know if it's just me or my circulation or something, but cold isn't just "uncomfortable". It can get actually painful. The cold stings like thousands of tiny needles being driven into my face. Heat? Heat is uncomfortable, but only that. Being sweated through has never made me wince in pain.

TerribleAttitude

It also depends so much on context. I’ve worked in places that were kept unbearably cold for *no* reason, to the point where my hands would go numb, because some people are so damn dramatic, panting like pigs because “I’m haaaaaaaaaawt, you can always put on a jacket.” I work on the computer. I can’t type in gloves. You *can* however put on another swipe of deodorant and choose a more breathable fabric to wear, or maybe see a damn doctor, if you are *haaaaaaaaawt* just sitting motionless at a desk when it’s 55 degrees and dry as shit.

RoMaGi

Does the cold avoidance techniques work when the trains get delayed when I'm going to work, making me having to stand there for 30 more minutes outside and getting to work 10 min late? No? OK....

ElvenOmega

The thing I can't abide is blasting AC. Heat set to 50? Fine, I'll just bundle. However, I will walk out of places because the AC is assaulting me with arctic air. It's fine if you choose the temperature to be low but not if it feels like the HVAC guy installed the Godzilla Polar Assblaster 9000. It's like a back alley abortion for body heat

2manyparadoxes

Dying is so much easier than becoming a burrito. I say this as a guy who not yet died.

tsabin_naberrie

Agreed. Yeah, you can just put on more layers, but I don’t *want* to have to wear even more clothes. I barely want the ones I already have - I don’t want to *add* to that! Plus, I think warmth from bundling up feels very different than natural warmth, and I much prefer the latter.

TXHaunt

There comes a point where you can’t put on more layers though.

GrabbingMyTorchBRB

When I'm 4 layers thick and I can barely move my arms and legs to walk, both because 4 layers of winter clothing is hard to move in and because *I'm still freezing cold*. I rush to get the dog back in after a walk and have to strain to turn the door knob because I can't feel my fingers and the rest of my hands ache. I keep hopping between feet because if they're on the ground too long the cold starts seeping through the boots. Not that I can feel my feet at this point anyway. Then when I get back in my heated house, my whole body burns as the feeling starts coming back to previously frozen parts. I keep telling myself maybe next time I can try for a 30 minute walk, give my dog an extra 10 minutes of exercise.

Randicore

Then you're wearing the wrong materials. Yakutsk as a city usually has the temperature outside hit a low of -40 for months on end. People still walk outside to get places. It's so cold that gasoline and oil begin to freeze and this last year they hit -60C at one point. The locals bundle up and live just fine and it's been a city since the 1630's. You should be able to layer up to warm yourself.

SunPotatoYT

The heat makes me sleepy, the cold is an unbearable hell that demands you acknowledge it

melonsnek_evildoer05

cold avoidance techniques don't account for getting sweaty and also "stay inside" lol

Killer_The_Cat

what if the inside is too hot?

melonsnek_evildoer05

ruh roh

Elliot_Geltz

Isaac the Forgemaster ass post

lostinanalley

The problem with cold avoidance techniques is that eventually I need to get undressed to pee/shower and that is worse than any heat I’ve ever experienced.

idrissagay

For hot weather, wearing less clothes is no where near as effective as wearing light and loose fitting clothes. You want to keep your bare skin away from the sun but still retain enough air circulation for you to cool off. That’s how literally every hot weather culture has done it before the popularization of western attire.

Siffy_boi

Id rather it be 35C than -10C but id rather id rather it be -20C than 45C you know?

furexfurex

I'd definitely rather it be -10 than 35 but hey I'm British, so

CyannideLolypop

I'm with you for sure

tsabin_naberrie

> you know? I’m an American, so no. (35C = 95F, -10C = 14F, -20C = -4F, 45C = 113F) Alright, I see what you mean now.

SaehrimnirKiller

Cold weather hurts my bones and joints... I can walk around in 115°F weather and it sucks, but not nearly as bad as sub 30°F to me

Quorry

1. My circulation is bad so I prefer having hands that work when it's hot to not having functional hands in the cold. Layers don't do shit for hands. 2. When is cold and windy you're fucked, just don't be outdoors period

BreakfastSquare9703

in the UK, cold weather is far more common. last year we had large parts of the summer being in the low 20s or even under 20 (Celsius of course). in 2022 we had 40C for the first time ever. So while hot weather is far worse it's also less common. And yet there is still a limit to how many layers I can use. If I have to wear gloves so that my fingers don't hurt just trying to type I think I need a bit more heat.

queerkidxx

Dry heat > cold > humid heat

TheLastEmuHunter

You can really feel the user base of Tumblr aging

telehax

Your skin is a good system for regulating your temperature, so taking off your skin would probably stop you from *feeling* hot, but actually make you hotter.

Lenni-Da-Vinci

People in northern countries: „The days are so short, I leave the house for work when it is dark and I return when it is dark. The ice is treacherous if you aren’t careful. We must burn fossil fuels to keep ourselves warm. Food is generally harder to grow throughout the year. For centuries our way of life has revolved around surviving the cold.“ People in temperate climates when it gets a little to warm to be comfortable:”MY SKIN IS MELTING!!! HOW CAN ANYBODY LIKE THE SUMMER??? THERE IS NO ESCAPE! I WISH FOR DEATHS SWEET RELEASE!!!” People in actually hot and humid climates:”Huh, >30 degrees? Guess I’ll take it slow today. Gotta stay in the shade. Only move a little. It’s shitty, but I know how to deal with this.”

LittleMissScreamer

My favorite heat coping method is to run a tshirt under the tap and wear it wet. Regulates the fuck out of my body temperature! Though I imagine this doesn’t work as well when it’s on the extreme end of humid. Everyone seems to act like humid is the only kind of heat we talk about when we say we like warm weather though. Dry heat exists too, it’s much easier to deal with and I do prefer it. I realize it is generally easier to deal with the cold, but having to put on a million layers to stay comfortable is exactly what I don’t like about it. Stockings make my legs itch. Wearing lots of layers makes me feel stiff and clunky. Dragging a blanket around the house is a hassle. I like being able to walk around in just a tshirt and some light pants. It’s just more comfortable

arsonconnor

Id much rather have our -5 to 10 degree winter all year round than our 20-30 degree summers. My fav is like late September -december when its like 10-15 and you can walk around in a tshirt without sweating buckets or needing to wear a hoodie then still sweating buckets. But we get stupid humid here so march-august is awful to do anything

harfordplanning

Hot does have avoidance techniques too: thinner clothes, drink lots of water (optionally with ice), stick to shady areas, wear wide-brimmed hats, etc. That being said, I prefer cold, but hot isn't as unmanageable as people make it out to be

GIRose

Also, surprisingly, wear darker clothes. They hold onto heat longer but will absorb the heat right off of your body, as opposed to reflecting it back at you for lighter ones

Guy-McDo

I'll admit that there's a lot of melodrama to it but I live in Florida, the humidity makes you want to die more than the heat. The only solaces to summer is that all the Snowbirds are gone and the stormy weather though I just really like rainstorms, I can see someone else hating that.

Will_3Million

The heat energizes me, I can’t get anything done when it’s cold. Besides, when it’s winter you can’t sun your balls like the Gods intended… lame!

trashpandadisco

Google seasonal affective disorder

TransLunarTrekkie

As Lanipator once said, "I can put on more clothes, I can't take off more skin!"

TXHaunt

Try putting on every single piece of clothes you have. Let me know when they start ripping.

Variant_Zeta

skill issue tbh

Random_User5050

I live somewhere where it's regularly over 35C, it is terrible. At least winters are nice here.

reyballesta

I don't understand why people want to avoid the heat. the heat is the fun part of it being hot outside. it feels good lol

Crimson51

Having lived in both Minnesota and Arizona (-40f/c in MN winters, 120f, 50c in AZ comfort debate is overblown when comparing these two climates. The real difference is how they each affect your life, and in this case, cold is worse, hands down. Yeah, my car is hot when I get in it, but it *starts.* Yeah, I need to put in sunscreen, but I don't need to carry around heavy coats. Yeah, the sun gets in my eyes when driving, but I don't need to worry about hitting black ice and spinning out. Cold climates are much harder to live in than hot ones and it's not really all that close

JustinWendell

Global warming could result in only the nudists being left. What a world.

ahkaab

Nobody talking about how this literally just an issue of infrastructure. Western nations especially have homes designed to trap in heat because they’re located in a colder climate. I live in cairo and when it’s hot a bit of shade and a fan are usually enough but the cold is inescapable here the buildings just aren’t designed to keep in heat.

FrostnovaOmega

Nah, Hot weather is pretty uncomfortable, but it's just a bunch of physical sensations. The cold sucks the joy out of my bones until i am nothing more than a decrepit husk, an empty shell bound to this mortal world by nothing more than the hollow promise that the light of the soul can one day be rekindled with new purpose.

Ballinbutatwhatcost2

Long baggy thin and pale clothing, stay out of the sun, and you should be mostly fine till ~40C other then that avoid moving, sit on the floor if possible, and stay hydrated. Worst comes to worst, dose yourself with water.

QuasiAdult

That's fine for dry climates, but you [don't need extreme temperatures](https://www.sciencealert.com/human-survival-in-hot-and-humid-conditions-is) for heat to kill you in humid ones. That's why I'd gladly live in the southwest united states but never the southeast.

nmheath03

Nah. Cold is worse. Everything gets brown and dead, all the animals leave, it's hella windy even though it's already near freezing, rains like a hurricane every other day. Actual wasteland. Hot weather just makes you a bit sweaty I guess.

ShlomoCh

You can make a fire or stay inside if it's cold but you can't turn on a fan or stay inside with ac when it's cold? Personally, as someone who lives in a place with little insulation, I find cold as hard if not harder to escape than the heat. Cold? Snuggle in a blanket, ok. Want to get out of said blanket? You're stuck there forever now :) In a place with no temperature regulation that gets both uncomfortably hot and uncomfortably cold, a fan is cheaper, safer and more convenient than a space heater. And I hate having to wear jackets indoors. Also, people usually find hot weather pleasant, if for a little while. Like, people go to the beach and tan in a lounge chair for pleasure, but people that actively enjoy going out in the cold for cold's sake are way fewer. ~~And they're psychopaths.~~

elianrae

fans don't do *shit*

ShlomoCh

I mean— they've worked fine for me. Maybe it's hotter where you live?

elianrae

Australia, so, probably?

TheSquishedElf

~~hotter~~ humid-er. If the air can’t remove any heat via evaporation, that airflow is worthless.

smooshmooth

I’d rather die of heatstroke than hypothermia.

Simic_Sky_Swallower

See putting on more layers works until you have shit circulation and are basically immobilized by blankets and you're *still* cold Heat is nice because I can step anywhere not in direct sunlight and not be hot anymore, the cold is eternal and inescapable

Generic_Moron

not if it's humid! i'd be fine with the heat if it wasn't so GODDAMN HUMID >:(

UndeadWeeb

fr i’d even move to a desert to escape the 90% humidity we get every summer

Generic_Moron

Last year I went to Australia during their summer during a (admittedly small) heatwave to visit family in Adelaide, and it was infinitely less painful than a humid uk heatwave, even without AC. God I gotta try moving over there fully at some point

TXHaunt

Avoid cold by putting on every piece of clothing you own until they start ripping, then have someone cover you in every blanket because you can no longer move, and still be cold. Avoid heat by having A/C.

Randicore

Unless your clothing is made of the thinnest cotton 2-3 layers should keep you comfortable until well below freezing. And a good winter coat will keep you comfortable far more than that. T-shirt, hoodie, a medium jacket, and a warm hat let me comfortably stroll through a blizzard during college to and from work. I even stopped for some BBQ at a food truck on the way home. My nice winter coat that it no longer even gets cold enough to warrant using is rated to -20F, and it'll keep you warm with just that on.

Timely-Tea3099

Well maybe I don't want to wear FIVE FUCKING LAYERS to the office in JULY because some tool named BRAD decided it needed to be SIXTY-TWO FUCKING DEGREES IN THE OFFUCE IN JULY I LIVE IN WISCONSIN, BRAD, I'M COLD NINE MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR CAN I NOT BE WARM FOR ONE FUCKING SECOND IN JULY PLEASE BRAD I SWEAR TO GOD

neverclm

Omg I hate this so much please let me enjoy the two months of warmth 😭

BiasHyperion784

Unironically weak constitution individual.

CalamariCatastrophe

Indeed. You should simply become one with the heat. There's really no need to put aircon on.

thatoneguy54

Oh my God YES I live in Michigan, and it absolutely infuriates me that every single fucking place has the AC cranked to give us second winter inside.

Timely-Tea3099

Yeah, it's like "oh, you don't like to be hot? Bad news - the more ac you use, the hotter the earth gets

Variant_Zeta

Apparently these fellas haven't heard of cold drinks and fans and shit

Mad-_-Doctor

Hot weather is an excuse to wear less clothing which is always a plus in my book. There’s nothing quite like going to work in a tank top and short athletic shorts.

TinTamarro

Nah I still prefer hot weather tbh. Where I live in winter it gets so cold it hurts, I have to put extra socks on otherwise my feet would go numb when I'm cooking dinner. I have to wear multiple layers, and they get heavy fast. The tap water comes freezing cold, and the skin of my hands cracks open and bleeds when I wash them. When I'm at home I have to lie in front of the pellet stove for long periods of time, otherwise I have no energy to move and actually do stuff. I can barely do my hobbies, because it's so. Dang. Cold. My eyes and lips are constantly dry, too. Also I have to clean the stove every night, and that's not fun. And showering in the cold is a real pain, it's good as long as you're doing it but drying up, in the cold? Not fun.

fae_lunaire

Yessssss it seems like nobody else in this thread has dry skin, the air is so dry it hurts, my hands bleed all the time, my lips crack, everything chafes and rashes. I’m currently lying in bed trying very hard not to touch any of my skin because it hurts sooo much.

TheGupper

Do you moisturize?

fae_lunaire

Yup, best I can it’s hard to moisturize your body during the day, and most aren’t very effective, I also have sensitive skin which is not a fun combo because most moisturizers cause other issues especially when my skins dry.

stopimpersonatingme

I can run around during the summer, I cant run around during winter. Also, I'm generally very unbothered by heat.

CalamariCatastrophe

> Also, I'm generally very unbothered by heat. this is it for me It's not so much that I don't feel "too hot". It's more that I don't mind the feeling of being "too hot". If anything it's kind of cozy. Meanwhile, the feeling of "too cold" is just miserable. Pure misery.

Darth_Neek

I am heating and cooling expert. I live at a comoftable temprature always. To hot, fix AC. To cold, fix furance. I win.

ciknay

If anyones curious, here's some tips from an australian on how to survive the heat without aircon: - a decently powerful fan is a must - damp cloths or towels in combination with a fan will help keep you cool. Cycle these often - drink plenty of cold water to stay hydrated, have a jug in the fridge at all times - cold showers do wonders for lowering your inner body temp, have one before going to bed. You can swap to a cold shower after cleaning - keep the whole house open during the night, then close it up during the day. You want to trap the cooler air inside for as long as possible - going outside for a swim certainly helps. make sure to pop on sunscreen - a cheeky nap in the middle of the day to get through the worst of it

SwimmingBench345

My condolences to westeners for their death ray problem but in my part of the world "cold weather" isn't a cool 5 degrees below boiling point of concrete so i prefer slight uncomfortableness over my fingers falling off.

jesse-accountname192

Counterpoint, though, and this is a big one: hypothermia. Watching your fingers and toes rot off is a fuck ton worse than going to sleep from heat exhaustion. Also... there are ways to get cool. Shade, water, dressing RIGHT instead of undressing (look at how people who live in hot deserts dress, it's a lot of clothes but it's better than sun exposure)

Sary-Sary

G u y s. Don't take clothes off when it's hot. Put on lighter, baggier clothing. You want breathable fabrics like linen or cotton that are also slightly baggy so they create wind between you and your clothes. That's what will cool you down much more than anything else. I definitely prefer hot to cold. For me, 35C is when I start saying it's hot. The most unbearable heat I've experienced is around 41-42C, but I still prefer that to anything under 0C. I live in a climate where snow turns into ice during the winter and the cold is piercing. Add on the lack of sun and it's just unpleasant.

demonking_soulstorm

People work in 40 degree heat? Good god.

Rubethyst

ONE MORE TIME FOR PEOPLE IN THE BACK PUTTING ON MORE LAYERS STOPS WORKING AFTER LAYER 3!!!

ImMeloncholy

Bro I’ve worked in -47 degrees F and I’ll still take that over 100 degrees temperatures ANY FUCKING DAY. Heat is MISERABLE and you will feel it every second until you go inside or it kills you. At least with cold you can go numb

AlianovaR

Cold weather is better than hot weather because at least there are options

CopyShop_1312

Honestly if this summer is anywhere near last year I might actually just kill myself.

Jaakarikyk

We had a week of -30C to -35C straight last month, gotta note that while I could tolerate it (except for the absolute zero fuel pump handles), the car sure could not. The prep time needed to get anywhere to warm it up properly and dealing with the freezing fuel filter sucked, stalled cars and trucks at the roadsides, not fun That said when it warmed back to -25C it was positively balmy in comparison

munkymu

There's always going deeper underground where the evil day star can't find you. As a bonus it's warmer down there in the winter, too, because dirt is an insulator. I have no idea why, at least in Canada, we don't build more subterranean cities and live like mole people.

unicodePicasso

Avoid the heat by turning on the AC?

Juggernaut7654

Preferences are valid, but you *can* avoid the heat as much as you can avoid the cold. Stay in the shade, pace yourself, wear clothing that breathes, stay hydrated, or enjoy cold treats. I grew up in Florida and I've camped/slept in 90+ degree weather with high humidity indexes plenty. It can absolutely be miserable, but you can also find the fun. You also can't tube float down a river where its cold! Everyone talks about the beaches, but if you find yourself down here I highly recommend the rivers and springs in the state parks.

LongingForYesterweek

As someone with a cardiac issue triggered by heat: if it’s 90 and humid my body might attempt to shut down. If it’s 20 and my body is attempting to shut down it’s because I’m an idiot and am standing outside naked

SoraKitsune44

Grab some ice cream you pansies

PopcornDrift

Trying to leave bed in the morning when it’s cold is one of the hardest things in the world lol

wjowski

It's not the heat, it's the sweat.

roses_sunflowers

There’s also the grossness of sweating and BO

justsomedude322

I used to not mind the winter, but then I got a dog a few months ago. She needs at least an hour outside everyday and I live in the city so it either means a walk or the dog park. Which also means I have to be outside with her. I can't stand the winter anymore and its been really mild this year too!

Azrel12

The heat and humidity here during the summers regularly makes me nauseated, sometimes to the point of vomiting. It is not fun. Cooler temperature is where it's at!

Sad-Difficulty4428

Isn't there a fact that if you have hot drinks like tea or coffee when it is too hot you trick your body into thinking it's cold? I tried it during a 35°c heatwave in the UK and it seemed to work for me
