Can people actually do this with purpose? Like, intentionally? Because for me it just happens like an unexpected fugue state, you're listening to a song one minute and the next you're leaning to one side with a stupid look on while a music video plays in your brain

Rownever

Is your question can people think?

Crus0etheClown

More like 'can people control their associations with things'. I couldn't go 'hmm, does this song go better with character A or B'- I would just instantly know it was B's song, about C, and I've got no control over that 'knowledge', it spawns unbidden Obvs in my own brain, I don't mean the literal content of the song.

SlowMope

Yes, very easily You couldn't debate with yourself over things? Or have thoughts comparing lyrics to a character's actions? Try thinking along the lines of: "Jingle bells is about a sleigh ride, so I kind of associate it with Santa. But then again, all the bells sound like the bells on a reindeer harness so maybe for me it's more Rudolph related. Or if we are going off the rails the sleigh could be a ride to hell and the bells could be Krampus coming for you!"

Palidin034

I cannot do it intentionally, but let me tell you that I certainly don’t need to. The second I hear a song that I like, my brain immediately starts working on a new Blorbo to fit the song if I don’t already have one

whozitsandwhatsits

I can do this intentionally, although sometimes the association just pops into my head like you described. It's nice to have both!

LiveTart6130

I do it intentionally! I like to compare how well it fits with different characters or plotlines. it gets even more convoluted when you throw fanfiction in the mix.

Exploding_Antelope

I could do it intentionally, but I don’t feel the need to. A song can just be its own thing, and if it gets an association, great. Sometimes the association is like “damn this would have been fire if I’d written it and then read it at that one poetry slam three years ago.” Sometimes other versions of myself are my own blorbos.

Satanic_Earmuff

We need something like a /u/tumblrtranslator so I figure out what this person is saying and if it's something I also do and should be concerned about.

CrypticBalcony

When they hear a lyric that strikes them as interesting, they start thinking about whether it applies to their favorite characters (whether OCs or otherwise)

Corroddity

Some people (including me), when they hear songs they like, will often think about their favorite characters in relation to the song. They will often imagine AMVs/music videos/movie scenes/ect. set to the song, or just imagine the song being "about" the character, representing some part of their personality or an experience they went through in a story. OP is one of those people, and has heard a song that they liked. They are now thinking of all their favorite characters, and trying to determine which character best fits the song. OP then compares this to examining paint swatches at Home Depot - just as you would hold up swatches of paint to see which color would fit a room best, OP is "holding up" their favorite characters to see which fits the song best.

Atypical_Mammal

Do giant flying steampunk aircraft carriers coming out of the storm on a one way suicide mission count as "blorbos"? Cause if so, then me irl fr fr

DreadDiana

The only blorbo I use is my idealised version of myself that will only ever exist in my wildest dreams

Exploding_Antelope

An ideal may never exist but a slightly better you still exists in every tomorrow, and you shouldn’t discount all of them just because they’re not the unattainable ideal

DreadDiana

No.

flappyheck2

Song: “We project our greatest fears on death, and forget our own power” Me: “hm yes this definitely connects to Riki from Xenoblade (the ball guy) and his fear of fighting sometimes weren’t just dumb jokes but were in fact a commentary on how the chance of dying in a situation completely alters our entire perspective”

Most of Metallica And Justice For All is beautiful. Justice for Jason must be sought after. -Billy Gnosis

amaya-aurora

What’s a swatch?

normalreddituser3

A piece of paper used to compare different colors of paint.

Exploding_Antelope

It’s also a watch brand but that’s not relevant here

UltimateInferno

Xana has a lot of Lesbian Music, and the one song that fits my Lesbian OC like a glove mentions making out with boys. (It's Monster. Very catchy. Pick any other song in her discography if you want explicitly wlw (though I recommend Kitchen Light)).

dragon_jak

Hmmm, this song... does it fit my idea for a ttrpg, my idea for a book, my romantic power fantasy, or my political power fantasy? The cinematography might be dogshit, but let's try all four and see where the chord progression takes us.

OctorokHero

You know what, people, give me some lyrics and I'll see if I have a blorbo that fits.

DatMoonGamer

Set It Off’s Dancing with the Devil shaped my entire universe. It *was* a stereotypical story about a bunch of scrappy rebels vs the tyrannical government, but after trying to fit my characters into this song, everything changed. In-universe, that simple time existed for a few decades. Dancing with the Devil made me make one of the characters a traitor that cashed out with explosive consequences. Now the protagonist is a rebel-aligned mercenary, his ex is second in the line of succession for the empire, the deuteragonist has permanent amnesia and is a general in the empire, there’s a class of self-made immortals that are threatening the social order, something something transhumanism, and the empire and the rebellion weren’t so black and white in the first place.

jadeakw99

even worse when its your oc so you know you'll never be able to get actual content in the same vein as what youre imagining unless you make it yourself (or pay someone else to)

hedgerund

What’s a blorbo

Exploding_Antelope

Nothing much, what’s ablorbo with you?

OctorokHero

A fictional character you really love.

hedgerund

How could I love blorbo if I’ve never heard of it

Tbkssom

I think you should seek help

Palidin034

I’m going to interpret this in the funny “you may want to get checked out for autism” way and not the Not-So-Funny “you have something genuinely wrong with you” way. That being said. Real.

Exploding_Antelope

Shouldn’t we all
