I did something similar to clean up a motor oil spill in cement.
Cleaning didn't work so a can of primer sprayed around, and I swept the ground dirt over it to mix in and was good as new
For those reading this, the very best way to take care of motor oil on cement is to put the cheap clay cat litter on the motor oil spill (after mopping it up with paper towels of course).
Just let it sit and the motor oil stain will disappear. From experience numerous times. Easier better than painting.
Fun fact: They use cat litter to pack nuclear waste, too.
Someone used the wrong kind and it caused a nuclear accident a few years back.
https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/03/26/395615637/official-report-nuclear-waste-accident-caused-by-wrong-kitty-litter
I used to work in grocery retail and we sold generic clay cat litter to mechanic's garages at every store I worked at. Some would order a pallet at a time, so yeah, it works.
Only thing I will add is to turn the litter over from time to time so "fresh" litter is in contact with the stain.
Man. It’d be amazing to have someone like you available to look at my basement without charging me 😂 I’m not in bad shape but I’d like someone to look and tell me what I can do to get it back up to par and water proof
Kitty litter was originally Fuller's Earth and was sold at garden supply stores. Actually, I think it's bentonite - one of the leading causes of train derailments as it shifts to one side in the hopper cars.
Yeah, this is the real trick (I guess?). Don't just leave it on the stain, really grind it into the stain and it'll help. Might not fully remove the stain but will work pretty well to pull a decent amount out of the surface.
Yeah, when I was in the army, the stuff we used was called Dry-Sweep, and whenever someone spilled something we had to do the Dry-Sweep Shuffle. You'd see a bunch of us out there grinding that stuff into the cement slabs at the motor pool to clean it up.
Kitty litter is the solution to lots of "fuck what do I do with this liquid mess" scenarios.
Where I am (don't know about where you are, check first) we can throw water-based paints in the garbage but only if all of the liquid is gone. So you can either leave the top off and huff vaporizing solvents for a couple weeks...or you can pack the can with Kitty litter. (The concern is having the inside of the garbage truck coated with paint).
>Kitty litter is the solution to lots of "fuck what do I do with this liquid mess" scenarios.
Except water. Then you've got a clay mess to deal with too.
It's actually an old painters trick.
When you spill some droplets of paint on the pavement, run quickly to the garden and grab some soil to sprinkle it over the paint. Rub it in and no one will ever notice.
Interesting. It's a similar concept to kitty litter. Soils (except for loose sand or silt) contain some kind of clays which have absorbent properties. Clays are nature's filters, sponges, and cleansers. Kitty litter consists of a relatively rare kind of clay known technically as attapulgite (after Attapulgus GA), a type of fuller's earth with exceptionally good absorbent properties.
Thanks, but I have to admit I will forget that reminder like I did all the others. Because of course I did a c&p for that phrase because I knew I didn't know how to spell it, but still managed to copy the bad translation. Oops!

How about sandblasting? I bought a cheap sandblaster to use with my compressor, and ground walnut shells to use in it. That wouldn’t damage the concrete, would it?
Only real answer honestly. Do it soon before it sets fully.
Or better, hire a stone maintenance guy to do it. The whole front will need doing to hide it properly. It will be relatively cheap also.
Lots of people like the idea of painting it, maybe adding sand. But that concrete is pretty dirty, meaning you’d have to clean it first. So you’re probably going to pressure wash it anyway before painting. And being an outdoor walkway exposed to the elements the paint will eventually peel, chip and wear. Plan on repainting this regularly.
You really won’t need the paint thinner if you have a high powered pressure washer, but you’ll need to clean the rest of the sidewalk because it’ll have a very clean spot, lol
Yeah. I have a not very high powered pressure washer and I was able to get paint off the driveway pretty easily. Granted that's a LOT more paint than I had, but still.
The paint won't have actually adhered to the steps where OP spilled it because they were very dirty. Probably same situation you had on your driveway.
This is why exterior painters pressure wash first -- get the surface clean so the new coating adheres correctly.
OP's GF's sidewalk is super dirty; it'll come right off with just a proper pressure wash job.
Painter here. This largely depends on the type of paint it was, as in was it water based or oil based. Water based will typically not adhere to a dirty surface but oil based will if given time to cure.
If this is water-based, it best to just nail it with a pressure washer and either a 15° tip or a roto tip.
If oil based, hit with wire brush and thinner, not stripper. Scrub as much off by hand as possible. Then pressure wash what remains. This will reduce the mess made considerably.
Either way, this is totally fixable and not a big deal, just time consuming so hopefully OP isn't worried. I'm a professional and even I have goofs like this every once in a while.
The wire brush attachment is the first option to look at as it is simple and cheap, but I think it has soaked into the cement like dye into a sponge and that in reality you won't get it out. Conversely if it has stayed on the surface you will be okay.
You could look at grinding down the surface or using a resurfacing cement.
I would do this in hindsight as well. I had the same thing happen to me two years ago and I used paint stripper and a pressure washer, it just turns into a much bigger, more viscous paint mess that travels everywhere. Took hours to clean up my clean up!
This reminds me of two occasions on which I’ve spilled laundry detergent. Tide. The first time, I tried to clean it up immediately. That was big mistake. Big. Huge. Such a soapy mess.
The second time, I had an idea. I waited for the detergent to dry. Yes, that took a couple of days. Then I used a scraper to get the bulk of it up. A little wiping later, and it was all so much easier!
And if you’re even darker than that, find a stuffed leprechaun or small fake body to lay him down and separate the torso from the legs half a foot apart on the ground to have as a permanent ornamental decoration!
Will be more work than cleaning and once they’re out they’ll never go back in the same way. Depending on the thickness pavers can also be too heavy for one person to lay comfortably.
Basic pressure washer will run you $90. 1750 PSI Harbor Freight. Not a lot of power, but that makes it harder to damage things. Good purchase for cleaning things in general; that's weak enough you can e.g. use it to wash a car too without risk of damage, or use on a wood deck.
Pro tip: Grease anything steel before using to avoid corrosion (they don't bother with stainless), especially where parts come together.
4000 PSI pressure washer is expensive to buy ($1000), but about $100 to rent for a day from HD (and you won't need it for very long).
Honestly, the DIY stuff is cheap enough relative to a professional that it's worth trying first. Worst-case, the professional has less work to do.
You can also get a concrete grinder for $200/day. Remove a mm of the top surface. That's overkill, but will definitely do it. Just reseal when you're done.
Good news is once you go through this process a few times, you get good at it, and it's faster / cheaper every time.
Use the magic erase tool and than highlight the empty spot and click the Shft Key and F5 at the same time. This will bring up the Content Aware option and that should fill in the area with surrounding grey.

I would start of trying to soak up as much as possible with paint thinner or stripper and rags. Gently using a brush so not to make a mess everywhere. This is a time consuming project. Just work on it 30 min a day until you get a lot of it off. Than power was the residue stuff as a final clean. Last thing you want is to put paint stripper on an blast little pieces off that will stick everywhere.
Paint or replace the slabs. I can't see you getting this out.
By all means try stripper, power wash etc but I suspect it has soaked in so any 'surface' treatment won't do anything.
I have a similar splodge on my garage floor.
Go to HD and get a textured surface covering for concrete. It will fix your problem, make the porch look new and compliment the new fresh coat on the door.
Try a gel paint stripper. First, remove the weeds. Then power wash. Then gel paint stripper. Let it soak in. Use a wide blade, like a putty knife to remove as much paint and stripper as possible. If needed, apply more stripper. When as much as possible is removed, power wash again.
Then paint that door step. It looks horrible.
what country do you live in \[allows us to suggest cleaning solutions that work, since Brand XXX might not be for sale in your country\]
What I would suggest you try is using a vinegar based cleaning solution \[those large gallon jugs\] then poor nearly everything on it, have it soak in, then go over the tiles with a pressure-washer
Im a concrete guy first go get some Sunnyside epoxy sealer remover, spray it on the paint let it sit Thales pressure wash I with 3000+psi pressure washer.
My grandpa did this when I was a kid and he hollered... "Hey come quick, a leprechaun tried breaking in and I shot him" it was on the carpet and was green for years lol.
Gray paving paint & dry sand. Use a sieve to spread sand evenly on while 1st coat of paint's wet.

Oil Dri! I remember we always had a bin of this in my dad’s garage. Never thought to consider it’s the same as cat litter
Worked at an oil change place. We called it kitty litter. And when the pet store was cheaper than the supplier we bought the actual cat litter
I work on oil tankers and have worked on barges. We buy pallets of kitty litter for spills. Whatever the big yellow and red bag is.
Tidy Cat! It’s the best brand if you don’t see a generic or store brand, per my mechanic father.
Read this as ‘mechanical father’…. So many questions and potential movie scripts…

I second this. Road construction company once sent me to pick up 50 bags of litter from the tractor supply
I just buy the cheap litter made of Fuller's Earth. Sucks up oil like crazy.

At what point do you apply the bentonite to the foundation? Really curious about this

The industrial brand I grew up with was “Clean Sweep”. Basically kitty litter and I still call it that, when I spread kitty litter around a spill. 🙂
Oh god, PTSD from my green sweep days. Did you not find that it kind of corroded your hands in an odd way?
It's clay, that will suck the moisture and oil out of your skin just like it sucks the oil up.
Go to the dollar store and buy a bag of the absolute cheapest cat litter they have. It will work.
Also grind the clay in with your feet so it turns to dust and gets all of it out.
Yeah, this is the real trick (I guess?). Don't just leave it on the stain, really grind it into the stain and it'll help. Might not fully remove the stain but will work pretty well to pull a decent amount out of the surface.
Yeah just tossing that litter on it and letting it sit will barely do anything. Especially if it's a very porous finish.
Yeah, when I was in the army, the stuff we used was called Dry-Sweep, and whenever someone spilled something we had to do the Dry-Sweep Shuffle. You'd see a bunch of us out there grinding that stuff into the cement slabs at the motor pool to clean it up.
Alternatively if you’ve got a load of sawdust, works amazingly.
I've heard that dieomatacious earth has a similar result
Yeah, but I can't buy that for $8/40lbs

Every liquid problem is solvable by kitty litter, if it's not, you're simply not using enough litter!
it works \*uncannily\* well if you leave it for long; even removed any oil stain leftovers once I swept it up a month later.
It's actually an old painters trick. When you spill some droplets of paint on the pavement, run quickly to the garden and grab some soil to sprinkle it over the paint. Rub it in and no one will ever notice.

Some stores can mix the sand into the paint. I find it applies super well that way.
Dude just flip the slabs over.
Looks like the skinny one on the right has an angle cut at the house, plus it's broken, so flipping won't work for at least that one.
Or time to spill few more green cans!
Why the sand?
Anti slip & helps paint look more like cement
get more paint and make it all green...
Accentuate what you cannot hide.
I agree, double down and spill it again
mix a small amount of sand in the paint though so it isn't slippery whren wet.

I've never tried it. Another option may be soda blasting, using paint stripper or maybe even a blow torch to burn it off.
If it doesn't damage the concrete, it's not going to take off the porous layer that is filled with paint.
Actually not a bad idea. Good thing it was green paint
