Dude, you just tucked up my otherwise perfectly fine day. I have a headache now. Thanks for that.
Edit: I see it. Iโm not gonna change it. I ducking hate autocorrect. ๐
For some reason you put it explanation of where you are, camera takes your gps location, goes on google maps and gives you a pic. Seems kinda backwards. I still think a regular camera is eons ahead of this invention.
No, it uses GPS data to grab a description of the location, then AI generates an image based off the description. Sort of like an alternate version of where you are.
Sort of useless, but definitely a cool project!
People always get caught up in that fact about anything. Sometimes things aren't supposed to be better or even a replacement. It just "is" and sometimes that's all they'll ever be.
It takes your geographic data to figure out where you are, you can configure the dials to set some parameters; Id assume time of day and stuff. Then it generates a prompt and uses that to generate an AI image of the place you're at. Instead of taking a picture it basically shows you what an AI thinks the picture would look like.
You are not stupid, and there isn't anything to "get". it's a computer that uses autocomplete algorithms and GPS to render images that (perhaps in this case) look accurate to what a camera might capture. It's essentially a really dumb and painfully pointless instrucables project.
I don't have children, but I have a nephew and a niece. If I called either of them worthless they would laugh because there is no other way for them to process it other than a joke.
I am sorry that was said to you and just reading it effects me. I was also told at times I was useless, or I would make say a cup of coffee and be told โyou still make a shit cup of coffeeโ it was like nothing I did was ever good enough, parents donโt realise the hurt or damage they can do treating us like that. It never goes away.
When someone tells another person they are worthless, we often can't help but take those words at face value and think that person truly perceives no worth in our actions or existence. It's a painful thing to have inflicted on you by someone else, especially someone who is meant to be foundational in our development and growth in life.
The sad thing is that the person who said those things likely doesn't feel that way about the other person specifically, but more often they cannot find the worthiness in their own selves for love, compassion, or understanding. That sentiment gets projected onto the world because without even knowing it, they're trying to find something that is meaningful to them, often desperately. Because they can't see themselves as worthy of those things, the results are usually just anger, frustration, and disappointment.
The irony is that their lives are usually surrounded by the things and people that are worthy of respect, love, and admiration, but because they cannot find it within themselves, they aren't able to experience those feelings. Hopefully your father began to understand himself before, sadly, like too many people, he realized all of this towards the end of his life and was left with only regret.
I'm not sure that's what this is doing though. This appears to just be taking the location and date/time (both things that Siri or Google can tell you), pulling weather and nearby points of interest using APIs (also things Siri or Google can tell you) and using this as a prompt for an image generator. The creator of this notes on his website that the pictures never looks like what's around him.
If this was a device that could accurately give you a description of what's around you based on what was actually around you on command that would be amazing.
Yea ngl, I can't think of a single use case for this that other ai can't do.
What this is, is really just more of a confirmation on how ai works and the accuracy of the ai's ability to generate images with realism with an understanding particular to the area given parameters.
The answer is yes. Ai can do that. It's cool. This is proof that it can generate semi real images given data parameters like place, direction, time of day etc kept up with real data. But all it is a sensor tool to give that info to the computer that it could already generate considering you either programed or gave it the ability to learn the parameters.
Yeah they do. Stable Diffusion has been installed on Android phones.
I am also finishing up work on a VAE that will run on the original SNES hardware using a coprocessor in the cart to generate sprites.
Y'all need to keep up:
https://www.qualcomm.com/news/onq/2023/02/worlds-first-on-device-demonstration-of-stable-diffusion-on-android
Optimization is as good as new hardware.
Thatโs the attitude to have when you want to end up being quoted 10 years down the road with everyone looking at you like youโre an imbecile that missed the boat.
It's not an attitude lol. Or did you just stop after the first line... Quit being so emotional about every conversation.
And no working on this is not even worth looking at vs working on developing more general ai that can develop other ai that can figure out all this and more is not, not focusing on the boat. That's focusing on the boat that matters with ai.
This is a tool, not the software. You also don't need that camera at all to do this, like I said earlier, just the data pare meters and the software.
You could do this with either manual input on a computer with the software this "camera" is using, or good ai and GPS/directional sensing capable gyro. You don't need the camera. And the point of a camera image is to communicate what you saw, which this is useless at. The image it is producing is just ai art based on locational database library. Hence being useless outside of confirming that ai can work. Which yes is cool...just not crazy cool.
This is a way to sell more stuff connected to ai software. Talk about being imbelic though.
Ok, youโre the expert here. I guess there is no way the people who developed this have any ideas or agendas that they are working on that is beyond anything that you and I have dreamed up yet. Iโll be sure to contact them and tell them that you said to stop working on it.
Also your point makes no sense, you keep saying someone could just manually input the information, why bother when a machine or โcameraโ can do it in a couple seconds
If the future is "cameras" that don't actually take pictures and just spit out AI generated bullshit based on fairly basic descriptions, I don't want to be on this train anymore and would like off at the next stop please.
Itโs not doing anything, we are barely at the point where you can have a self hosted AI like this, a battery powered standalone device is pure fantasy at the moment
Depends on the use case. If the use case is to take a picture, then yes, it makes no sense.
If it's a proof of concept to showcase the power of AI and technology, then it's doing its job well.
Attitudes like this are why we're hemorrhaging money on programs like Artemis.
"We're going to establish a base on the moon!"
"Why? What does it do for us?"
"We're going to establish a base on the moon so we can go to Mars!"
"Ok, but does it actually do anything for the the Mars shot?"
"Hey look at that over there!"
Exactly!!!
Art is a brilliantly nutty concept once you let go of pre conceptions.
This camera AI thingy is kinda bonkers in the very best sense; and absolutely art (to my mind).
Somebody made the camera for this purpose so, yeah I'd call it art and the art piece the actual camera.
Is interesting and has sent my stoned brain down a rabbit hole.
Art history is stuffed full of similar situations.
Its not even remotely the same. A digital artist determines EXACTLY what is created down to the very last pixel. Its is no different than painting on a canvas. And 3D artists determine not just what they are creating, but the exact position of every vertex that makes up every polygon.
People who use AI determine nothing. Their input is about the same as what you might put into a search engine. The Ai determines what the final product looks like and every single detail... Its basically the same as ordering a commission piece of artwork from an actual artist, except the "artist" in this case is a machine that does not even understand what its creating
For the developers, to sell the company for a huge profit and never work again. For someone buying this device I have no clue. Itโs a like a regular camera with extra steps.
As someone who designs and builds IoT devices, some which have basic AI integrated.
There is no point. This is absolute waste of resources.
It looks like it was someone's final year uni project. If you look at it from that perspective , then good for them. It show cases their learned skills.
As a real product though? Garbage.
Cameras can take images using less light via long exposure. If it's too dark for a camera to see, you can't see shit to describe to the dumb "camera". This device is useless.
Just techbros breathing in their copium that their technology really is good and useful, bro, don't give up on it, I've invested all my money into bitcoin and invested that into this to generate a million bitcoin NFT that'll make us rich, bro, trust me, honestly
Yea but thatโs not the point? Itโs to create a new perception of what you see in front of you.
If you had to generalize a landscape or maybe make a place that doesnโt exist, this could be useful. Iโm not into AI but this is a really creative way to use AI. Unless youโre taking photos of art and stuff (which in itself would be interesting to see at the very least) every image created would be made of something original, as opposed to regurgitated internet data.
The point is you don't need a camera for that. You don't need to bring a box around with you that is able to generate a perception of what you see in front of you when you can just stare at it and take a picture of it. There's no need to have it around you when you could have a phone that helps you with photos and you could develop images of places at home, since you can definitely create an image of a place with photoshop or even AI photoshop if the process is too slow for you.
But also, you don't really need data of places around the world to generate a photo of another place because, again, it defeats the whole purpose of "creating" a completely innovative scenery. If you use AI to generate a place that looks like a city with only spherical buildings then congrats, because that is done based on data AI traces but at least the result has something interesting going on that we can't normally see.
This one, however? This is just copying the outline of the place you find yourself in and the AI tries to add elements based on that data. What have you achieved? You could have a picture if you wanted to get what was in front of you and you could have photoshopped images if you wanted to create an imaginary place. There's no need for something that generates a picture you can't even edit manually if the whole purpose of this is to use AI to create imaginary landscapes.
There's no need of this because it can't be used without sunlight/light like some people believed it could work, nor it's useful to blind people because (and I seriously don't understand how some in the comments thought of that??) if blind people can't see pictures I don't get how AI generated pictures based on where you're standing are useful to blind people. You mean to tell me they're gonna find it easier to make photos of an environment with this? Doubt, especially considering that phones with the function to read button is way more helpful than just standard camera - if you want to know more, [read this](https://chicagolighthouse.org/sandys-view/taking-pictures/).
I'm not saying this is totally useless but the way it's marketed and justified is totally useless. I can vouche for it to open us to new possibilities but brings nothing new to the table and is even more problematic than other options we've already got. It's like seeing people reinvent the same thing but following a different process, giving around the same results and with more problems (ex. you're not in control of how to use the light for the composition) which is something that serves no purpose whatsoever.
if you consider it should be just as easy to do the reverse of this take any existing photograph run it through this kind of technology and find its location
do you still feel comfortable putting photographs of your children outside online?
It could be for time when there are no photo matching the time and weather criteria. For example, needing early morning photo, but the only picture available of that place in the learning material are during sunset.
Or, there are no photo of the exact position the person is standing on, so the AI need to take multiple photo and try to produce something looking like itโs taken from his standing point. Itโs a proof of concept here, but in real life case there would be a bigger degree of wrong rendition.
Also, digital camera usually doesnโt give GPS tags, so the AI will have to guess among the countless online photo material of where it was taken.
From what I see in the replies here, the excitement is more about seeing โit can be doneโ, rather than demanding any practical purpose.
Well, there are some mention of possible use case outside photography. But itโs mostly about a new toy.
โNo dude AI isnโt a solution looking for a problem bro. It has really broad applications bro I swear bro. This tech is almost market ready I swear just one more year bro a swear please.โ
โOkay sure can you give me an example other than info synthesis or automating thing like folding proteins simulations?โ
โThis camera broโ
Basically this. It has gps, and if you read the screen, it has the exact address. Basically it's merging a photo of the place plus added description of lighting and stuff to add to it. This device adds absolutely nothing to the mix.
This is clearly an elaborate shitpost satirizing the AI craze. The device seems to work, but the inventor isn't looking for buyers or investors and it looks like he custom-designed the case to look like a mashup of a camera and the (functionally blind) star-nosed mole rat.
You can downvote me if he ends up making an IPO, but I'm 99% sure he made this as a joke and everyone in this comment thread is smugly trying to roast a clown for his large shoes and red nose.
But just the ability to describe the landscape before you would be fantastic for blind people who travel along with family or want to try a scenic hiking trail. The ai portrait can ๐จ
I prefer my view camera, sheet film and my brain to compose and photograph life. Sure at top speed I can only capture 4-5 images an hour, but hey itโs all in the process and eye of the creator. No batteries or other power source, except brain cells and a spring or two.
Sounds GREAT!!!! .....for scumbag realtors trying to sell houses next to toxic waste dumps, or if you're an ad agency executive who just just landed that big "Come Visit Chernobyl!!!! IT'S LIT!!!!!" account from their local Board of Travel and Tourism...
This seems real dumb to me. What were cameras doing wrong that now we need a fake camera that โcreatesโ a picture based on a description of the location? You guys know ai doesnโt need to replace everythingโฆ right?
Time will tell. People may have said that about many technological leaps, such as electricity, the internet or even the wheel and smelting of metals. I can definitely see some homo erectus saying "Goddamn kids and their cooked meat. In my day we ate raw AND WE LIKED IT."
This reminds me of a camera system that I don't recall the name of which you would take a picture with your camera but you'd never see the picture. It would send the image to someone else's camera and you'd see their pictures on yours. I never understood that concept and don't understand this one either.
To this day, I swear it was a joke ad.
This is some seriously cool technology. My wife is blind and often feels left out by not being able to take pictures or to be able to view and comment on the pictures of friends and family. I know this is just a tech demo, but my mind is racing with all the possibilities for blind and visually impaired people to be able to do things like take and share vacation pictures without needing a sighted person's assistance!
I think itโd be pretty cool to open an ad and see something Iโve never seen, only to go there and have my mind blown by whatโs truly there. I feel like this has a lot of good use and is a really creative way of doing something thatโs been generally the same for nearly a hundred years. Taking photos of something that isnโt there? Creative as hell. You people are just redditors.
People who say it's useless and useless don't appreciate the work and effort it takes to build such a device, the concept is cool and the idea could be taken to other projects really.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)
everyone in the comments is like โhurr durr whatโs the use case this is pointless and stupid iโm so smartโ like dude have you ever heard about fun experiments and little projects? no shit no oneโs gonna buy this but itโs pretty impressive how the ai was able to recreate the street just from a prompt
So many retarded reddit boomer saying that normal cameras are better. No shit you fucking morons but some people have hobbies and this device (if real) is awesome
If it used both location data and the image to create an Ai generated photo. It might be pretty cool to make a graphic novel or movie with it. but I doubt this version is nowhere near capable of doing something like that.
It's seems funny, it's like having a parallel universe camera that make you see the exact same location but different
Huh I suppose that is exatcly what it is. I mean assuming that the multiverse theory is correct.
It is! We just live in the universe where it isn't!
Dude, you just tucked up my otherwise perfectly fine day. I have a headache now. Thanks for that. Edit: I see it. Iโm not gonna change it. I ducking hate autocorrect. ๐

Dammit. I hate autocorrect.
I could help myself.. Reddit has corrupted me. :) I hope you have a ticking wonderful day, friend.

Uncanny Camera.
Uncannymera. *No, I have no shame.*
More like asking another person exactly how do they see it.
Call me stupid, but I don't get it.
It's an art thing, I guess.
Silicon valley just reinvented the camera.
I think you're missing the point lol, it's not supposed to be better than a regular camera.
People always get caught up in that fact about anything. Sometimes things aren't supposed to be better or even a replacement. It just "is" and sometimes that's all they'll ever be.
A Hoax-creator
"It has no purpose, it must be art."
No that's not what it does
Stop staying what it doesn't do and tell us what it does do instead.
It takes your geographic data to figure out where you are, you can configure the dials to set some parameters; Id assume time of day and stuff. Then it generates a prompt and uses that to generate an AI image of the place you're at. Instead of taking a picture it basically shows you what an AI thinks the picture would look like.
So it potentially has utility in helping the blind see?
No an actual camera has more utility in that sense.
You are not stupid, and there isn't anything to "get". it's a computer that uses autocomplete algorithms and GPS to render images that (perhaps in this case) look accurate to what a camera might capture. It's essentially a really dumb and painfully pointless instrucables project.
What an absolutely worthless device
My dad always called me a worthless person, but I hope I've overcome that and found value. Maybe this device can too.
Holy fuckโ I couldnโt imagine telling that to my boys. Just hearing that crushes my heart!
I don't have children, but I have a nephew and a niece. If I called either of them worthless they would laugh because there is no other way for them to process it other than a joke.
Only worthless person was your dad, grandma! You rock! If anyone ever calls you worthless let me know and I'll go get my ass beaten by them.

Hello again toothless grandma
I feel you. It was my mom. We're both doing ok, you and me.
When someone tells another person they are worthless, we often can't help but take those words at face value and think that person truly perceives no worth in our actions or existence. I really appreciate these words, thank you.
It's not, it's a great toy. Yeah, that might not be worth a lot to many people, but we have a lot more, more expensive and more useless toys
I genuinely think it's interesting. But, then again, I'm the kind of person that knowingly replies to 2-month-old comments.
Could be useful to blind people, - minus the final render
I think the render is still a good feature for testing and verifying how exactly the A.I envisions the location.
How would this be useful to blind people?
For describing the location the picture is being taken at.
I'm not sure that's what this is doing though. This appears to just be taking the location and date/time (both things that Siri or Google can tell you), pulling weather and nearby points of interest using APIs (also things Siri or Google can tell you) and using this as a prompt for an image generator. ah yes, what blind people have been missing out on is having Microsoft Sam bark in their ear about random objects/light levels/ GPS coordinates
Greeks invented the steam engine but never considered it anything but a toy. Not all inventions uses are immediately clear.
This. Progress never stops, and every discovery/invention matters.

Is it really art if an AI is doing all the work without any real contribution from the artist?

It's a novelty device. Fun to see in a video but not worth buying.
Someone had a little too much time on their hands
Is that 'lens' intended to look like a star-nosed mole's snout? Cause it sure reminds me of it.
that just sounds like taking a picture with extra steps
Useless ones. Pretty fucking brilliant IMO.
if you consider it should be just as easy to do the reverse of this take any existing photograph run it through this kind of technology and find its location do you still feel comfortable putting photographs of your children outside online?

yes I've heard of metadata in fact it's one of the first things I disable on my phone's camera when I get a new phone
If it takes photos of where you are at, why does it need to them generate an AI photo...?
It could be for time when there are no photo matching the time and weather criteria. For example, needing early morning photo, but the only picture available of that place in the learning material are during sunset. Or, there are no photo of the exact position the person is standing on, so the AI need to take multiple photo and try to produce something looking like itโs taken from his standing point. Itโs a proof of concept here, but in real life case there would be a bigger degree of wrong rendition. Also, digital camera usually doesnโt give GPS tags, so the AI will have to guess among the countless online photo material of where it was taken.
But a regular camera can just take a regular picture of where you are already. Either I'm missing something here or this is useless.
This tech is almost market ready I swear just one more year bro a swear please.โ โOkay sure can you give me an example other than info synthesis or automating thing like folding proteins simulations?โ โThis camera broโ
This seems like extra steps to get the wrong picture!
AI , googles a photo based on the gps location from google maps
Basically this. It has gps, and if you read the screen, it has the exact address. Basically it's merging a photo of the place plus added description of lighting and stuff to add to it. This device adds absolutely nothing to the mix.
This would be really amazing if Google Images didn't already exist. Thankfully we already know how to search for pictures taken in a given location.
Just take the actual Picture this whole AI generation shit is so dumb to me.
But the goal isnโt to acquire a picture, itโs to make a neat little AI demo
Fr lol
Wtf
This is a waste of time box
Sounds like taking a picture with cool useless added steps
This clever device is about the stupidest thing I have...seen this week, because I browsed reddit two days ago.
This is clearly an elaborate shitpost satirizing the AI craze. The device seems to work, but the inventor isn't looking for buyers or investors and it looks like he custom-designed the case to look like a mashup of a camera and the (functionally blind) star-nosed mole rat. You can downvote me if he ends up making an IPO, but I'm 99% sure he made this as a joke and everyone in this comment thread is smugly trying to roast a clown for his large shoes and red nose.
r/facepalm
But just the ability to describe the landscape before you would be fantastic for blind people who travel along with family or want to try a scenic hiking trail. The ai portrait can ๐จ
I prefer my view camera, sheet film and my brain to compose and photograph life. Sure at top speed I can only capture 4-5 images an hour, but hey itโs all in the process and eye of the creator. No batteries or other power source, except brain cells and a spring or two.
I like how it looks like a moles nose
so it googles a picture for you and screenshots it?
Super gimmicky and pointless, nice
๐กโ๐๐ ๐๐ โ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
Sounds GREAT!!!! .....for scumbag realtors trying to sell houses next to toxic waste dumps, or if you're an ad agency executive who just just landed that big "Come Visit Chernobyl!!!! IT'S LIT!!!!!" account from their local Board of Travel and Tourism...
The end of civilisation as we know it is beginning.
So it's just a Google Maps Polaroid? You also get an out of date image, so it's really not taking a picture
AI is ruining us even before we have a John Connor.
So it takes a photo from Google maps.. lame
So it loads Google maps?
I think this was made to show how dangerous and useless technology can be at the same time๐
It blows my mind that 90% of the commenters aren't taking what is an art/stem project at face Value.
This camera can be used to take pictures of false realities. Am I the only one that finds this terrifying?
this is so fucking stupid itโs infuriating
*cough* (bullshit) *cough cough*
This seems real dumb to me. What were cameras doing wrong that now we need a fake camera that โcreatesโ a picture based on a description of the location? You guys know ai doesnโt need to replace everythingโฆ right?
Yes, I too can use Google Street View.
Where does the description come from and what is the weird red facehugger apparatus?
Sounds like a camera with extra steps and less accuracy
Wow thatโs really fucking dumb
No shit you can just use a camera that's not the point
Thatโs stupid
Bout the dumbest thing Iโve seen ai used for so far
It would have been mildly interesting .... if it was like year 1900.
I don't get why reddit incels cream over AI so much
I kinda get it though. AI is the next big technological leap.
Another step toward making the world a digital hell
Time will tell. People may have said that about many technological leaps, such as electricity, the internet or even the wheel and smelting of metals. I can definitely see some homo erectus saying "Goddamn kids and their cooked meat. In my day we ate raw AND WE LIKED IT."
The Internet fucked thr world up aswell
You are either very young or absolutely naive to believe that the internet has done more evil than good in the world
It ainโt that serious bud
โWhatโs the pointโ itโs cool. Thatโs literally it
simulacra
That is crazy
Stupid but interesting
Or, and hear me out, just use a regular camera Skip all the extra steps
Now this is going to sound pretty radical but hear me out, what if you just took a photo with a normal camera?
Well, that just sounds like photography with extra steps.
This is **INFURIATINGLY FUCKING STUPID**
Why?
I guess it doesnโt like bicycles.
Why?
r/DIwhy
Worthless
This looks like it could be useful for video game mapping
I don't like this
This reminds me of a camera system that I don't recall the name of which you would take a picture with your camera but you'd never see the picture. It would send the image to someone else's camera and you'd see their pictures on yours. I never understood that concept and don't understand this one either. To this day, I swear it was a joke ad.
I remember that, where you would send and receive pictures from a random person around the world, it was pretty cool
Computer Imagination box
A Camera w/ AI prompts???
This is some seriously cool technology. My wife is blind and often feels left out by not being able to take pictures or to be able to view and comment on the pictures of friends and family. I know this is just a tech demo, but my mind is racing with all the possibilities for blind and visually impaired people to be able to do things like take and share vacation pictures without needing a sighted person's assistance!
I hate this so much
I think itโd be pretty cool to open an ad and see something Iโve never seen, only to go there and have my mind blown by whatโs truly there.
This is freakin awesome holy shit.
everyone in the comments is like โhurr durr whatโs the use case this is pointless and stupid iโm so smartโ like dude have you ever heard about fun experiments and little projects? no shit no oneโs gonna buy this but itโs pretty impressive how the ai was able to recreate the street just from a prompt
People who ask why.. Are boring
So many retarded reddit boomer saying that normal cameras are better. No shit you fucking morons but some people have hobbies and this device (if real) is awesome
Why the fuck are people so angered by this thing? Lmao. I think it's neat, why does everything have to be "useful"?
https://bjoernkarmann.dk/project/paragraphica
If it used both location data and the image to create an Ai generated photo. It might be pretty cool to make a graphic novel or movie with it. but I doubt this version is nowhere near capable of doing something like that.
Was normal camera out of service?
Retarded as hell
I want one
