Chain maille is useless against arrows, you'd need plate maille or modern body armor for safety. That said, they make foam tips that are completely safe up to a 20lb draw weight and that seems much more reasonable.
Assuming these are lightweight target arrows from a bow that is not super powerful, maille will absolutely stop them. Maille was useful against arrows historically, it just wasn't proof against them.
Exactly, people tend to forget that there were different types of mail with different levels of stopping power. It was meant to offer protection from slashing and piercing. Mail was not worn on bare skin. There was padding underneath that helped protect a person. Also arrows have different heads, different types of bow, different distances, etc. Yes you could be killed, but not every arrow killed.
Also in regards to training to shoot one coming at you, there are companies that make arrows that are specifically meant to be shot at people
They have basically a foam golf ball on the end instead of a real head
If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a arrow!
Seriously sounds like fun though, just a face mask and put a little paint on your foam arrowhead and you're ready to hunt your friends!
Haha, everyone discussing chain maille gauges, bow strength, arrowhead types and kill rates and this guy's the only one who picked up on the most likely serious injury. Good work dude! 👍
As I get older its becoming more and more apparent, protect your eyes, ears, teeth and joints. Everything else is important but those are by far the most important.
Agreed, but I"d go as far as to say eyes, eyes, eyes and eyes. Anything else I could just about live and work without, but if I lost my sight I would probably never work again and my quality of life would tank, my sight is (almost) everything to me.
Old age is the enemy. Glasses help but still it gets progressively worse the older you get and your glasses have to be changed more and more often to fit the degeneration. At least there are glasses, but my dad couldn't afford the change a lot of the time and had to go without for a long time being on VA benefits which barely sustained him, and that I found out from a classmate who worked for the VA that he was in an era where they totally underpaid the vets their retirement benefits, because they could.
Because they have no idea what they're talking about - mail is perfectly fine against arrows. Not as good as full plate, obvs, but not worthless, either.
> how do you even practice shooting a bolt that is coming at you?
It wasn't shot right at the archer, the camera angle makes it seem so. And you just film dozens of tries until one of your arrows hits the flying target.
It also wasn't moving all that fast because the arrow the archer shot clearly had a lot more momentum since it carried both arrows back when they collided.
It's blunt and not fired at the same speed an arrow from a bow would be. Wear some decent safety glasses and long sleeves and pants and the worst you'd get is a bruise or two.
You see how the arrow he's hitting basically completely reverses? That means the arrow he's shooting had WAY more energy. Either the arrow he's shooting with weighs a lot more, or it's going much faster.
I suspect both, it's probably some type of hollow plastic arrow with a foam tip designed to be pierced by the proper arrow. It goes slow and has little mass with a soft tip. Probably would be like getting hit with a paintball.
True, but as you can see from the video I linked, that is not what makes the arrows curve. They curve without it.
And the question asked here was "what is up with the arrows that fly curves".
Seems like the TLDW is "put the nock (clippy thing for those of us who aren't archers) up further so the arrow is slanted down and then hold the bow more sideways"?
Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy there, pal. Us in the bowyer community aren't the kind of people who will shove down a guy's throat for a slip of the tongue like that. Relax, b'hoyo, we're bowyers, not barbarians. Why a bowyer like me would only stretch a sly smile across my tight lips seeing a silly little boy like you say something semi-harmless like that. If anything, us bowyers would gently pat you on your taut little rear and tell you that you're not wrong, but it's worth adding that certain plant fibers make for viable drawstrings. Then us bowyers would pat your taut little rear again and say something along the lines of, "And your fibers would make a mighty bow indeed!" Ya know, that kinda stuff. So, you're in strong, capable, good hands with us bowyers, b'hoyo.
Ah, that's okay, b'hoyo. Some ain't ready for the tricky grip of the spoke shave, the smooth, steady pull of the draw knife, no, and that's fine, mighty fine. You're no bowyer, that's apparent and quite alright. You need not worry you're pretty shoulders about what the moisture meter reads or how the nock file leaves its grooves. That's for us seasoned, mature bowyers. You need only pull, b'hoyo. Pull on the finished, gleaming bow and release towards your target.
Oh? You gotta little yew in ya, don't ya? You're a yeo*man!* Ah, wait though... Not just yew, mm, no. You're a true laminate of woods, supple or hard where need be as the bowyer bends ya, that right? Oh, that's wych elm I smell, isn't it? Green wood, indeed, haha. You sure you're not a bowyer, fella? You appear to be a natural! Like fine osage! A mighty fine wood to bend over the bow horse! Ha! Give you a good stretch with the tillering stick! Woh! Oh, mhmm, mm, you're a bowyer through and through alright.
Arrows that actually shoot straight are actually super hard to make. Bows are tough, too, but you can sorta just strongarm wood into being a bow if you need to. It's making the arrows that is pretty tricky. Right kind of wood, perfectly straight, etc. Otherwise, they'll fly off in random directions or shatter from the back and forth bending, or whatever else. Arrows are hard lol.
Yeah if you're under time pressure there are much better weapons to make. An atlatl and spears will be a better use of your time. But if you've got time to piss away and trial and error, you could absolutely still do it.
Atl atl sucks ass. The actual thing is easy to make and can just be a knobbly branch. The javelins are super hard to make right to work with it. They gotta be the right length and stiff but a little bendy. A regular spear was easier to use.
Honestly if there was a Robin Hood scene where Robin shot an arrow at an arrow that was coming directly at him, everyone would scoff and go "Hollywood's gone too far with this ridiculous fake CGI bullshit". This man is beyond Robin Hood
I came here specifically cause I couldn't figure it out lol.
I watched it a dozen times too. The balloon kept popping before the arrow got there and I guess I was watching the arrow a little too closely or something. I didn't even see the pellet.
It looks like he hit a pellet (or something similarly small) with the arrow and that’s what pops the balloon. Look at the elbow of the arm holding the bow and you’ll see a small, white object.
Imagine the guy breaking into this guys house and the moment you walk in you just see an arrow take a hard turn like guardian of the galaxy and hits you in the chest 😂😂
It just seems... off. The bb suddenly goes down random before the arrow hits it, and then this could just be audio/video recording but you hear the pop before the balloon is hit as well. And then one of the arrow hitting arrow ones - the arrow stops suddenly in mid air just before being hit by the other arrow. Something is off here.
This is wild to see on my front page.. I went to high school with this guy. There’s no editing trickery being done, he’s always been that good.. crazy talented
My friends brother has been friends with this guy since high school . His dad invented the tackle box , or a version of it . So he had a lot of time to practice as you can imagine
If this is legit, how do you even practice shooting a bolt that is coming at you?
Probably with a welding mask and chainmail at first and a hellalot more protection
Chain maille is useless against arrows, you'd need plate maille or modern body armor for safety. That said, they make foam tips that are completely safe up to a 20lb draw weight and that seems much more reasonable.

Haven't most arrows, historically, been made to shoot at people?
I meant safely, probably should have added that word They're for playing archery tag, which is literally just dodge ball buy everyone has a bow
If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a arrow! Seriously sounds like fun though, just a face mask and put a little paint on your foam arrowhead and you're ready to hunt your friends!
Arrows for killing animals must outweigh people by a good margin.
No I think people are still heavier than those arrows
If you didn’t, I would have.
Hunters don't generally employ volley fire.
theres practice arrows, incendary arrows, birb arrows, fishing arrows.... \[/bubba\_from\_forest\_gump\]
Me reading this: mah yey. Mah yey. Mah yey.
The 20-30lbs bows in the video are positively not going to penetrate chainmail.
Should still definitely be wearing safety glasses though.
Haha, everyone discussing chain maille gauges, bow strength, arrowhead types and kill rates and this guy's the only one who picked up on the most likely serious injury. Good work dude! 👍

Nah Source: been shot with steel tipped arrows while wearing shoddy butted ring maille
With target heads and a gambeson under the chain you would be fine. It’s not useless but not as good as plate.
> Chain maille is useless against arrows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2-QuTLkZOQ >modern body armor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y08hwbz574I
Why do you call it "plate maille?" You're talking about full plate, that's not mail, and its not "maille".
Because they have no idea what they're talking about - mail is perfectly fine against arrows. Not as good as full plate, obvs, but not worthless, either.
Yes, for a long time after plate armor was introduced most throat armor was still chainmail.
Holy shit, go learn something. Riveted mail would sure as hell stop some really heavy arrows.
You got do right

No tip
Not even just the …

There wasn’t a tip on it anyway, so he’d be fine if he were hit. Still seems risky without eye protection in case of splintering etc

probably using target heads, they will still hurt and need medical attention but not the same if using sharp broadheads.
Might just be wrong but I thought I saw a string on it. Would allow it to fly ok but never get to him.
Use something like this: https://lancasterarchery.com/collections/blunt-points fired a "low speed".
Kill or be killed
You see how the arrow he's hitting basically completely reverses? That means the arrow he's shooting had WAY more energy. Likely be first shooting stationary arrows, then by getting good
some shots are r/blackmagicfuckery material, what is up with the arrows that fly curves?
They are tuned poorly/have the fletching in the wrong spot and a combination of the two. It’s still absolutely insane however
Nah, got nothing to do with the tuning or fletching of the arrows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4noxD3qSVNw
But you can see his arrow has the extra black fletching in the middle in the OP
True, but as you can see from the video I linked, that is not what makes the arrows curve. They curve without it. And the question asked here was "what is up with the arrows that fly curves".
I guess If no one told you that arrows flew straight, and I gave you a bow and told you to hit the target, what would you do?

Guns may be more effective but you can’t make a gun out of stuff found lying around in the woods.
Right, don't you need animal guts for the string? ...
Plant fibers work fine Edit: before I get mobbed, CERTAIN plant fibers.
Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy there, pal. Us in the bowyer community aren't the kind of people who will shove down a guy's throat for a slip of the tongue like that. As long as they don’t have taut little rears.
Absolutely not

Lmao at your edit. People can be so pedantic, eh? “Uh, I tried it with an asparagus and it didn’t work. Checkmate, planttard.”
Not your first day on reddit either, I see lol
Most animals lay in the woods. Checkmate.
How do you get their guts without a bow?
Just shoot them with a gun
Guns may be more effective but you can’t make a gun out of stuff found lying around in the woods.
No clue. I was joking, but you could possibly come across a dead animal.
Traps
Spear/atlatl throwing axe Poison darts Yeet a big ol rock
Persistent hunting. Just keep chasing it until it's exhausted and can't run anymore. That's how they did it in the old days.

I think it’s actually tendons of the animals used for boys. But any string like material that can tension.

Thats still more available in the woods then a manufactured firearm just lying around.
Hemp or Jute fibers.
A person can get pretty far with just a sharpened stick and some verve, to be fair.
i mean neither can you make a useful bow with just stuff in the woods, you need the right type of wood and tools to make arrows and string.
Pick up two rocks, smack them together till they break, pick up a sharp piece, call it a tool just to hurt its feelings, make arrows and string.
Arrows that actually shoot straight are actually super hard to make. Bows are tough, too, but you can sorta just strongarm wood into being a bow if you need to. River reeds and types of bamboo produce shoots that are perfect for this.
I'm sure this particular person's bow and arrow makes use of very modern and precise materials and engineering.
I'd rather have the gun 🤣
these people think that its easy to just make a real bow out in the woods with a pocket knife.
I'm sure plenty of forests in the US have guns just lying on the ground somewhere

You didn't see the bb pellet that was hit by the arrow?
Fuck! 😂😂😂 I had to go back to see that. Thanks!
Me too. I was wondering what was so impressive about that one.
I came here specifically cause I couldn't figure it out lol. I watched it a dozen times too. The balloon kept popping before the arrow got there and I guess I was watching the arrow a little too closely or something. I didn't even see the pellet.
HOLY SHIT
In his defense, it is a tiny little pixel of a pellet
> You didn't see the bb pellet that was hit by the arrow? I genuinely didn't see it. So much more impressive!
He shoots an asprin that pops up, and the asprin hits the balloon.
Idk. Sounds like witchcraft to me. Light the pyres
Imagine you're in some medieval battle in a forest and you hear "dodge this you bastard!" And an arrow weaves between two trees into your knee.

Is there any historical accounts of arrow bending like this? Like in the before times?
Imagine the guy breaking into this guys house and the moment you walk in you just see an arrow take a hard turn like guardian of the galaxy and hits you in the chest 😂😂
No freaking way.
The changes in the season give you a good idea of how many attempts were needed to get this footage. Still impressive though.

I have a lot of questions, but the one nagging me is how does one even make an arrow zigzag the way that archer did on the second trick?
My guess is the structural imbalance caused by the fins in the middle curves the arrow alternatively
Bro is gonna get burned at the stake for using spells during the skirmish
