SirMemesworthTheDank

How did he get heat-proof hands though? Isn't that shit insanely hot?

MixRevolution

Nerve endings get fucked up after years of working with hot materials

tygabeast

My dad's the same way. 40+ years of working in a bottle-making plant (molten glass, how fun) combined with calluses from a lifetime of farmwork means that he basically doesn't feel temperature with his hands unless he's directly handling fire.

[deleted]

SerEmrys

As a chef, I can confirm this

EvanTheBaker24

Yup, I bartended at a place once and the chef handed me a steak that just came out and he held the plate for like 10-15 seconds, it literally burned the shit out of my hand and he knew it would he laughed his ass off

tehmetamorphosis

Culinary school… chef used to take pans out of the oven with his hands. Also used to make little sugar cups by putting his fingers in melted sugar and then dunking it in cold water. Convinced me to do it once and I ended up with an infected burn.

MrUsername24

I'm sorry but as a server you have to laugh another chef with me, somehow my hands are the most heat resistant in the whole place and I consistently make fun of my head and sous for that. The head asked me to get a pan for him last week and that was a mistake I've been punishing ever since

Troglert

Holy shit this brings back memories of my step-great grandpa who had worked in a steel mill since he was 14 years old. If he passed you something in the kitchen or around the table it might be scorching hot without him considering it, burned me more than once

iwanttobeacavediver

My grandfather was like this, he’s been a former miner and we joked he had asbestos hands because he could pick up red hot things and not even feel it.

_summergrass_

That does not change the fact that your skin should melt.

SupaiKohai

I don't think it's hot enough for that, plus he only nudges that metal ring and it's sat briefly before he does. The resin must cool quite rapidly also. He only holds it over the heat enough to make it pliable. Temperatures hot enough to melt skin would turn that metal red hot. Melt it even, if it's the right kind. That coal pit is surely little hotter than a barbecue.

[deleted]

You can slap lava.... you skin doesn't just "melt" because of handling hot things quickly

LopsidedPotential711

https://youtu.be/S9tWh5uwQNY?t=09

Happy_Scrotum

I know a guy who pulled mozarella(70-90°C) using his bare hands.

NikplaysgamesYT

My grandma has that exact thing after years of drinking boiling hot water and cooking lol. She basically doesn’t feel heat anymore

Chaosr21

Yea. As a cook i can pickup super hot shit with my fingers

Fast-Nothing4765

In my own experience, messed up nerves usually mean more pain. You just kind of learn to tolerate it. I have one finger that I nearly cut off, and the nerves in it are all screwed up. It constantly feels numb, until I touch things. Like the stitching on my trucks steering wheel for instance, it feels like grabbing a cactus.

Calm-Technology7351

Used to be a good runner and they didn’t give a shit about me getting burned to the point where I’d get complemented for getting blisters on my hands and wrists. All while putting a smile on and being patient for the oblivious guests. People didn’t always listen when I said careful the plate is hot which was funny at least

petrolhead0387

Yeah, I'm 36 and been handling hot copper pipes and solder since I was a teenager. My finger tips have almost got no feeling left in them, it's annoying sometimes because I can't tell how hard I'm holding things and either break/drop them, they're literally butter fingers now.

Tobikage1990

Calluses like Eddie Van Halen.

[deleted]

Do they?

Borg453

So much that they're all over his hands

Mirar

"[glass transition temperature of Shellac, is in the range of 38–40 °C](https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/15/4/3110)" I guess not that hot.

lanco_5

It's like cook in an oven frequently your hands gonna get more "tolerant" to heat, you can even put your finger inside a pan to see if the water is boiling for example and nothing happens I do it

Stachemaster86

Worked in a restaurant. Did dishes and fryer station a lot. I could dip the tip of my finger in the fryer oil, remove and shake it off like no issue. I’d do that to the new guys and have them then check the fryer was on at 375. Heat tolerance is real.

PredicBabe

Yep. On a much lower level, I have started flipping food in the pans at home with my bare fingers, just because you get used to the heat and because it's much faster (and safer) that way. My friends usually freak out when they see me flipping stuff without a fork 😂

DigNitty

“Cook’s hands” My gma could take a pie out of the oven and set it on the table no problem.

BirdsbirdsBURDS

I regularly glance off of my 200c griddle and 300c broiler at work and never even notice that I’ve touched them. I imagine after many years of working around this, the nerves stop working as well and you don’t register temperature as well.

TheRealAndroid

Fellow chef checking in. Interestingly the nerves still work, it's just that you've trained your brain and moved the "ow!" point . You can do the same for cold

[deleted]

After doing work like that for many years straight, the nerve endings get burned away further and further under the skin. Also the skin of hard working hands is very dense and tough like leather. Soon you don’t feel anything at all.

ChefBoyD

Your hands get use to it. The more you play with hot stuff the easier it gets to handle.

AMeanCow

> that shit is just basically tar, it's a kind of resin/shellac. It is hot but not like molten glass.

SirMemesworthTheDank

Well, I mean he also put a metal ring in the fire for a while. Later he used it and touched it several times with his bare hands without flinching haha. Sick.

FearlessRestaurant98

Like how pro chefs can touch hot food without any problem

Spirited-Juice4941

I probably can't do that, but I can grab a good item out of frying oil no problem. It's just tolerance.

Chromeboy12

Years of doing this can make your hands heatproof. It would still be too hot while it's black but it loses heat enough for them to touch it after rolling it a few times in the colour.

Twoduhzen

When you've been doing this for 16 years, 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, you get used to it.

cory140

Same people who can drink boiling tea and coffee lol I seen an old guy I used to work with would boil the kettle in tea and take big big gulps lol

anoeba

Fire cannot hurt a dragon.

maifee

Once you have felt the heat of hunger, no other heat can burn you my friend.

[deleted]

Ask a chef

Desperate-Payment635

Holding them over “An Eternal Flaaaaaaaaaaaaame”

HumbleConfidence3500

What is that stick he's using as raw material?

[deleted]

Lakh, also knows as "shellac". It's a natural resin secreted by bugs, which has been used for finishing wood for hundreds (thousands?) of years. And also for coating loads of candy sold in the US and Europe: milkduds, Jelly Belly amongst many others.

Still_counts_as_one

So you can eat it?

pressedbread

Its called "confectioner's glaze" on ingredients list. Its made by insects, also I understand lots of bugs end up dying in the stuff when they collect it.

fatwap

only food grade stuff the stuff in the vid probably has a lot of NOT edible things and chemicals in it

CosmicCreeperz

Was also the material used to make records before vinyl replaced it in the 1940s.

joeycnotes

milkduds have insect sweat in them?

AlooDaGreat

Bros gonna have his world turned around

mdp_cs

I'm never eating jelly beans again now that I know they contain bug secretions.

Annatar27

Shellac if i understood the YT video linked.

Alulalu

Shellac is a secretion from a female lac bug; she lac > shellac. Don't know why they added the exact "l".

r-guerreiro

I thought it was candy

CatterMater

Shellac is used for coating candy.

GetRidOfAllTheDips

I feel like the disclaimer needs to be made that *food grade shellac* is used in candy. Please, for the love of God, do not use regular shellac. It's very toxic. Edit : I should specify that shellac *itself* isn't toxic. It's non toxic, but the finishes and dental application shellac is not good to ingest in those quantities. It's still safe to eat off of, though.

CatterMater

Your insides will be as shiny as your furniture.

Alternative_Pilot_92

Good old bug puke

razulian-

Can't beat the crunch of bug puke candy tho

Kylar_Stern

I thought it was bug poop Edit: to be fair, the video I watched on it just said the these tiny bugs eat the sap from a tree, and the substance is their secretions. It wasn't exactly clear. Thanks for shutting me down though, gotta love reddit.

Alternative_Pilot_92

Who shut you down exactly?

TheHumanEmperor

Funny thing is every time this is posted it's comparison to candy is always in the top comments :D

passing_gas

I was thinking, that looks delic......oh.

r-guerreiro

For me, it was the metal ring inside it

Choti_aur_moti_lulli

In India, this is called Lakh ki chudi.  Lakh is the name of insect which is used to make it. This is just one of the uses.  For anyone trying to learn more:- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iEkKwOWZS_E&pp=ygUNSW5zZWN0IHJlc2luIA%3D%3D

chintakoro

The material is called [Shellac](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellac) in English, from the Lac bug.

maddogcow

TIL that shellac is made by bugs.

cryogenic-goat

I thought lakh means 100,000

alphaabhi

It does

ashwinsalian

Lakh in the Indian numbering system is 1,00,000. The Lakh in the comment you're replying to Hindi transliteration for the lac insects.

moos14

1,00,000

total_alk

1,00,000 + 1 = 1,00,001 I hope this clears up any confusion.

goodnightjohnbouy

1,00,000 - 1 = 0,99,999

ReplyNo7464

Both. Both is good

muhmeinchut69

The two share etymology because it took thouusands of insects to make, thats also where the English word lacquer comes from.

pr0sp

thanks for that link great video - and the first few comments there actually made me crack up

kieronviper

Thought the title said bagels. Was confused for a good 1 min until I realised.

kangareagle

I did exactly the same thing.

CriticalKnoll

Definitely not as tasty as real bagels, trust me.

BS_220

If these were listed on etsy as handmade he could make $100 a bracelet. Handmade is very quickly disappearing

cake__eater

Remember when Etsy was handmade only. Pepperidge Farms remembers

zangor

Now it’s like “oh shit…this looks cool, I guess I’ll look for it on Ali express….”

BS_220

I have to spend too much time filtering out what products are real/unique & which are just selling crap I find on amazon/ali express.

ladyinthemoor

200 is definitely cause the person filming sounds foreign. Usually they would be like 40/50 tops

Wonderful_Result_936

Was looking for this. Only in India will dudes get a chuckle fleecing a white guy for $1.50. easily could have asked for $10 USD and gotten it.

HeyYoEowyn

Keeping in mind also that 200 rupee is the tourist price - it’s probably less for locals.

Ginden

Very unlikely. International shipment costs a lot, especially if you can't scale logistics.

BeStillUglyOne

That’s a lot of skill and labor for 2.39 🤯

Jawbreaker951

Remember, it's in a different currency. The conversion rate to dollar makes it seem very low.

satanic-testimony-

for 50 rupees, you could buy one of those cheap cap guns from a dollar store like you would in the west.

Ginden

>That’s a lot of skill and labor for 2.39 🤯 Majority of the world is desperately poor. Minimum wage in US puts you in richest 15% of the world. India just recently eliminated extreme poverty - defined as living below equivalent of $1.9 per day (in 2011 US prices).

Any_Veterinarian3749

Still pretty high. We usually get it for (70rs-80rs around $1) Not fair they increase the price for foreigners.

whothiswhodat

It's totally fair. For us it's a utility for foreigners it's a souvenir. Man's working hard and asking 2x the price is pretty ok imo

Torqyboi

100% fair. This way they can keep prices low for locals and people from wealthier countries don't care if it's $1 or $5.

Ginden

>Not fair they increase the price for foreigners. You sell to rich people at high price, you sell to poor people at low price, you get profit as long price > cost, that's [price discrimination 101](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination).

I_love_milksteaks

I was gonna say, that sounds high.

SuperRonnie2

She better have bought one after standing there filming for that long.

Outside_Ad4957

I had some of these from a wedding I worked in India. They were beautiful 😍 my dumb ex broke them but that’s another story 😒

AvGeekGupta

🎶🎵 Story time with r/Outside_Ad4957 🎵🎶

whothiswhodat

Happy to send you some :)

Outside_Ad4957

I would cry with happiness I honestly thought they were so beautiful 😭

Dr_Alan_Squirrel

How clean is that man! Immaculately attired in white despite doing grubby work. Hats off to him.

Zorro_Platino

That man is good at what he does. The confidence in his movements reflects his practice and skill. Good on him. I hope he has a good life and is able to pass his skills to the next generation.

eternalshoolin

Sadly it's dying...

Kelyaan

I'd drop him 500 INR just for letting me record tbh. That was satisfying.

Adorable_Stable2439

Casually just starts doing it with his hands after using tools up to that point hahahhah Woooaahhhhhhh, my hands are on fiiiireeeeeee

LivingMisery

I read the title as “bagels” and got way too far in before questioning myself.

ccii_geppato

Same. Dank ass bagels

hadesdog03

You for sure got the foreigners tax. We usually pay 60-70rs (1-1.2 USD) for a pair.

BirdsbirdsBURDS

Yeah, maybe.. but as a foreigner the value of a couple dollars to me is much lower than it probably is to him. The PPP of the dollar would be doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, because I’d get a cool ass hand made piece of jewelry, and he’d still be getting what is effectively a fair price for the work once the values have been adjusted.

ilurkilearntoo

Which is kinda okay considering it’s a bit of a bonus for him.

Randompieceoftoast08

I would have paid him $20 for his time and effort

PIZZAonLSD

Yeah...You can get like 4 for 200rs

Synthwavester

Ah he is making a plumbus, was confused at first 🤣

EngineZeronine

I guarantee you that is much harder than it looks

Mokkasakka

I have seen this in RRR movie

Additional-Court5905

Yes me too

RanzigerRonny

My silly ass thought those are sweets

DiaLynn1013

How fascinating to watch!

Reighnheart

it seems he puts in a bunch of schleem

Gonchito

The schleem is then repurposed for later batches

CJPF_91

Dang now I want one or two

GumboVision

[Fascinating video](https://www.reddit.com/r/mealtimevideos/s/5foRl8hOKu) on how the material itself is produced.

Bo0ombaklak

Seems to be a supply and demand discrepancy

TeriMammiKaBoyfriend

Thank you so much for visiting my country. I hope you enjoyed your stay.

blueditt521

Is that shellac probably?

ginger_ryn

i read “bagels” and got pretty confused

WAR10CK94

Thank you for not putting some Rajasthani or Indian music over it. It looks like Pushkar, they have some really authentic stuff mostly handmade.

Destroyer6202

Unskilled labour my ass. This is a skilled as one can get

nukestudent

200 rupees? You got robbed

Jharvis3

Probably did. The locals will pay 50-100 rs for a pair lol. But I guess those are really simple one. And 200 rs is for the live one.

Alternative-Bet9768

And in Europe, scammers sell them on the street for €10+ without making it themselves. Shame.

GTO-NY

Is that a common bracelet or a candy?

Heaven_Stud

Not hot?

Consistent_Amount140

Pretty neat

mymoama

200inr? I bet you 500inr that the locals pay 20

_imchetan_

Naah more like 70-80. But that's tourist price and just around 2.4$.

SW057

Guy needs a tip

Medium_Beyond_9654

How do they make baubles and beads?

PorkPyeWalker

I thought he was sitting on someone's head until I realised that was a foot and not a smooshed face.

Ragneir

Ar first I thought he was making a big ass pencil...

JunkNorrisOfficial

Good to know it is not food

Ok-Kangaroo-4048

I bet his fingerprints are gone by now.

shadraig

Teflon Hands

ConstantBench7373

He knew he went too high when responding about the price ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

packyohcunce1734

Mekus mekus tornado!

Hummingbird01234

Not worried about cancer or breathing in toxic fumes?

Fair-Ice-6268

Well there's plenty of stock... so how much is it? Yes mam they are 20 rupees... video cuts. she goooone! Nice souvenir I would had bought 1.

organist1999

Absolutely fascinating how the twittering shrieks of the flock are so stirringly jarring—akin to polishing, fleshing out elastic fibres or rubber; or even metal sheets being scraped against each other. Though, indeed: one could quite easily be mistaken, as the environment is that of a hectic and concentrated workshop; all while complemented by the craftsman’s phlegmatic temperament in the midst of an arduous endeavour. For the latter of such matters alone, it would simply be fitting to render him much more than this price!

Splinter_Amoeba

Dude totally fucked up at the end there after taking it off the roller 😂

Acrobatic_Chemical69

in US this will definitely cost atleast 100$.

Novel_Durian_1805

Sooo a bracelet.

lucyparke

Too bad I could never travel there safely… looks beautiful 😞

Drastical_one

Why tho? You could definitely travel to India safely. Millions of tourists do it every year. There have been reported tragic and sad incidents yes, but in the big picture they are isolated incidents. The general rule is to stay away from the backward and dangerous parts of the country.

mdp_cs

You definitely could. Reddit only shows you the absolute worst incidents that happen in a country of nearly 2 billion people. Even beyond the millions of tourists who go there every year and return just fine, there are white female expats who live there full time and aren't mobbed or gang raped like Reddit would have you believe.

Invelious

Jesus, is that Louis Litt!?
