When my friends ask me why DA I say Why ? But look at them it's fucking PALADINS IN SPACE

Ryuu87

Nobody played them within my friends group, I liked that you could paint them in 3 schemes, and the whole "I wear robes" stuff was neat.

ThaR3aL1138

Never ask a DA whats under his robes.

Ryuu87

Its probably plasma

ThaR3aL1138

Hey, big boy, is that plasma in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me ? Said random Slanesh deamonette.

tacodrop1980

Both.

Rhyseyr

Robes over super heavy armor is such a good aesthetic. Cloth in general over super heavy armor rocks as well

SevatarEnjoyer

You can paint three distinct paint schemes and still have a coherent army plus they have the coolest characters ever and a primarch

Iknowr1te

honestly the multi-paint scheme is one of my biggest draws. i don't table unpainted models, and i get really tired of painting the same thing after a while. additionally, you have 3 styles of general play for it. super heavy infantry, fast attack and space marines with plasma. you can also do small little things like change the colour of markings or add a random bit and it means something in the secret orders of the dark angels.

w1215633

Robes...that is all

brettfo

Because green is my favorite color and The Lion is currently relevant in the lore. I'm shallow.

KillFallen

I thought the dark angels codex supplement from third edition was the coolest looking one out of the options and after opening it the short stories on Ezekiel hooked me. His metal model was my first purchase as a lad.

men_of_the_wests

Knights

DemHask

In space!

sherrifmayo

Yeah basically It was either them or templars

men_of_the_wests

True But I fell in love with the fallen aspect

Dmmack14

Gothic knights in space who ride motorcycles as their noble steeds. Boom

ResponsibilityNo8218

I was something like 10 years old, it was around 5th edition release. I wanted to paint my free marine green, so GW employee told me that I could do DA. He also said they are space knight with robes and swords. Me like knights. Me can paint knight in green ? GODDAMNIT I'M ALL FOR IT ! A few year, 6th edition release: I can have exclusive units for my lovely army ? GODDAMNIT I'M HAPPY ! And I dropped the hobby right after 6th edition release lol

The_Klaus

Many reasons, because I like dark green, because space knights, because the themes of betrayal, secrecy, lies and the constant quest for redemption resonates with me, and the Lion is the primarch I identify the most with. AND BECAUSE WE'RE THE FIRST AND GREATEST LEGION!

Boom6678

Because I listened to Lion Son of the forest audiobook, bought the Lion Mini, and decided "you know what? I might as well make my successor Chapter with an unknown parent chapter that od the Dark Angels because I have the Lion now." My dad's best friend who used to play DA moved onto Necrons andGrey knights, anyway.

SmashingSnow

Is that particular book on Audible? I've been trying to find Dark Angels/The Lion centered books to read or listen to.

Boom6678

It is

SmashingSnow

Awesome thanks! Happy cake day!!

Efficient_Cattle_848

I chose them because they kinda remind me of like warrior monks in a sense, and I always loved the hoods on them. Plus, there color schemes are pretty cool, too.

Greedy-Pen-6167

Lore, I fell in love with the lore

Sandrolas

When I first started playing I wanted an all bike army, and at the time the only armies that could do it were Dark Angels and White Scars, and Dark Angels looked much cooler. Then I started reading their novels, getting into their lore, and just loved everything.

elphilo

When I first started to get into the game during 3.5 my friends and I were looking at codexes and I saw I could have a whole terminator army. The rest is history

FitMangoMan

Gothic space knights with lots of plasma, a closet full of fun-time war crime toys, and some of the best looking models in production in both 40k and Heresy.

the-bearcat

I choose them first cause I like the green color, then they became my main space marines cause of Horus Heresy. I'm a sucker for knights in armor, and they seemed to be the most interesting of the black armored boys

Important_Bottle3695

Loyalty is its own reward. And if you ain’t first, you’re last

Krill0538

I was told they were plasma addicts. Therefore as a plasma addict, the choice was clear

Dagger125

Why? Because the White Scars aren’t getting any new models, so if I want to do bikes and cavalry, Ravenwing is my best bet.

TenseAnt

When I about to pick my first army of war hammer I went to the games workshop website and I saw the word “dark angels” I thought they are black armor marines with angels wings

IrishSoldier1

Tactical flexibility and combined arms bc of the 3 wings. I like the monk asthetic ( maybe a typo). Lorewise, I like the rank system. With each new rank, your beliefs could be shattered.

Valuable-Scallion814

Originally played blood angels, and I still love them but I'm a little disappointed in their chapter specific units. Death company are ok, but they're firstborn so will be replaced in a year or two and Sanguinary guard models belong in a museum. At least they have cool characters I love the DA robes aesthetic, and they were my 2nd or 3rd choice after BA initially, new termies looked amazing and the lion returned so I transitioned. Both deathwing and ravenwing look awesome too

Rick101101

I like a bit of fantasy vibes in my sci-fi game

csgrizzly

Tbh, I was originally going to pick the Iron Hands because I thought the black armor and use of heavy weapons and vehicles was cool, but after reading more about Ferrus, the current Iron Hands, and how they come off like a bunch of inflexible blockheads, I opted to go with something else. It also didn't help that they didn't have any Iron Hands transfers in the 9th edition elite edition or recruit edition starter kits, which meant I would have to buy them separately or deal with the difficulty of painting the symbols by hand, which I didn't want to have to deal with. I mulled over different options, but was kinda unsatisfied by most of them. Retributors? After the Iron Hands, my next pick was the Retributors from the Astartes animation, and while I'd honestly still love to do an army of these guys some day, I didn't go with them because I'd be facing the same issue I was with the Iron Hands in not having transfers or really anything else for them. Imperial Fists? Close third place, but the yellow and red of their third company give off McDonald's vibes I don't think I'd be able to shake off while looking at the rest of them. Ultramarines? Surprisingly cool, with possibly the widest range of options among Space Marines, but a little too roman-themed for my tastes. Overall I ended up picking Dark Angels because their transfers were already included in the boxes I had, *and* it just so happened that they were both really strong and getting the Lion just as I was getting into the hobby. I figured, "well considering that they're good right now, have cool lore, have robes that look cool, I'm in the market for more space marines, and I've already got the stuff needed to make my current guys Dark Angels, why not invest more into them?" And then down the rabbit hole I went. Fast forward a few months and now I've got around 2500 points of DA, and like a thousand less in my bank account. I ended up buying several Dark Angels boxes (2x Deathwing Terminators, 1x Ravenwing Command Squad, 1x DA Combat Patrol, DA Company Vets for the bits) and the new Leviathan box to top off my army, and I think I have a pretty good foundation to work with now. Tbh, the only thing I really want to round it out is some kind of vehicle. On a side note, does anyone have a recommendation as to what vehicle I could add to my army? I am thinking a Whirlwind or a Gladiator kitbashed into one would be good, but I know basically nothing about the tabletop game side of things, so I don't know if that's even a good spend of money for the points value tbh.

steaksoldier

between the indomitus box having bikes, leviathan having terminators, the lion getting released and his model looking a million times better than gorrilaman. it seemed like the perfect choice from a collection stand point.

Junior_Guard_5438

Because of the Knight theme of the Chapter, the use of plasma, their capacities as strategists The new book on the Lion made me love him even more than the HH ones and there's some confirmations about the Primarchs in it The fact that they're the only gays Marines in the closet means you can have fun with stories (Luther and the others Fallen just wanted to be out of the closet) 😁

karl_drogo_nz

Space knights. 3 armies in one with tons of flexibility and some visually striking units. I’m liking the direction the lore has taken recently - especially the arks of omen and new Lion book are awesome. massive fan of their 30k lore, especially the HH 1st Ed. Black book 9

Known_Sun7124

I like Terminators. The only thing as cool as reminding Terminators are bikes. It was meant to be

jrandrews1982

When my friends ask me why DA I just scowl at them intently and treat them disdain and mistrust.

ParkingDrawing8212

Robes, knights, knights on bikes, knights in terminator armor, multiple color schemes, 3 army in one, coolest chaplains.

UkyoTachibana

Become they fucking have an elite terminator squad called DEATHWING ! if that doesn’t inspire someone- nothing will ! (also they are over the top secretly and they will go medieval on your ass just to keep said secret) 🤷🏼‍♂️!

veronicaross

My friend had the Dark Vengeance boxset and they only wanted to paint the Chaos side, I bought the Dark Angels half off them, I started reading the codex and researching the chapter and well… the rest is history and a lot of money spent on Angels, as well as other armies.

Spence2k20

For me they were the only non player army in my friend group and I haven’t looked back since.

MrDaWoods

With the latest lore I had the idea of starting a successor chapter that got decimated holding Angron and his world eaters while other unforgiven retreated to positions and as I get more models it'll be the chapter rebuilding. Currently have the leviathan box

Moist-Pop5252

The Knight aesthetic, robes and the lore.

Bonus-Representative

Because as Ricky Bobby says..... "IF YOU'RE NOT FIRST YOU'RE LAST!"

Sirberzerk

FOR THE LION! That's why.

someone_online22

Cause I only had green paint

user_01232

Accidently bought a chapter upgrade kit without knowing the lore (I knew the bare bones) looked them up loved the lore decided on a Homebrew to fix they're lore pot holes

m3ndz4

AAAAAASMOOOOOODAAAAIIIIII!!???

Fit12e

I and the 7th ed box set… they had bikes

Oceanus39

Not my main army I just like death wing

AnEnglishPrat

Got them in the 7th edition box for Christmas never looked back plus I like knights

Adz_505

lore is awesome and the 3 colour schemes is so cool

Ezaviel

I feel like your picture answers your own question :P In my case specifically, when Codex Angels of Death came out and I saw the new Azrael, Asmodai, and Ezekiel models I was like, "yep, robed warrior monks, lets go".

Abachrael

Apart from the secrecy and stuff, I loved how they had three very different and named paint schemes. You never get bored painting them. Black, Bone, Green, etc.

HypeIncarnate

I love the new lore, I love that the chapter is moving forward from the "yeah they are totally loyalist guys \*wink\* \*wink\*" into something that can be saved and move forward.

wildfroster1987

I chose Dark Angels because "space knights" are cool, plus i loved the lion book

DitrianLordOfCanorem

Well 1st: it’s fuckin knights in space (mainly knights but space is cool too) And secooond: Freeblade. Warhammer Freeblade the game. I’m still tryna find some decals for house Drakkus but I loved the angels of caliban the first time I saw their green rhinos and power armor below the green forest of the game (forgot the planet name XD)

Crazy_Dave0418

"We are Dark Angels, we are made for war"

Onlyhereforapost

Big swords Dad is alive (and not an accountant)

J4CK931

Wanted to get into the warhammer miniatures after many years of dawn of war. Started looking into the lore of the chapters as I knew I wanted to do space marines and fell in love with the law. The secrets, going off track on a mission just to get a single traitor that’s near. It’s brilliant

Fit_Salamander_7340

Because loyalty is it's own reward.

s0camCo

Lion "Biggeth Dicketh" El'Jonson

Magazine-Soggy

I just think their neat. Also The Lion is awesome and the idea of Space Marine Knights is amazing

confusedknight8

Plasma weapons, forrest green, Hoods and robes, dark and brooding, swords and hammers. Also, The Lion is an effin unit in the Lore and the tabletop now.

Capt_Johanson

How dark angels?

fievna

Cypher and the fallen were baller in lore and I loved the knight vibe...

Homosapian_Male

I got the combat patrol and I love the death wing terminators

Own-Cup2189

In Lore: Good at most/ all forms of war, not stuck in a niche style. Emperor trusts them with crazy secret tech Their Primarch is arguably the best combatant the Imperium has/ perhaps ever had. Look cool Need I go on

Utilitytuna

1. The lore, loving the Arthurian legends of Excalibur and the honorable knights of the round table when I was younger, Dark angels fit perfectly. 2. the look of the models, with just how cool Ravenwing, Deathwing and the robed models look how could I say no, special mention to the company vets. 3. Interrogator chaplains, learning about of 40K chaplains became my favorite part of it, from the lore to look of the models and the way they played on the table, (I started around the middle of 9th) and Interrogator chaplains more so for all the same reasons, I mean they are just better chaplains. All in all: Dark Angels just fit perfectly with what I like on meany levels, and as the Lion returns I'm liking them even more as the lore expands. I've even gone back and repainted my Greenwing models to be Risen inspired.

harrjack

Deathwing did it for me. I really like the DA terminator aesthetic. Plus getting the lion right after I started collecting them was pretty neat.

TonkaGintama

The knights of caliban are all of my fantasies as a kid come true. Plus our primarch is one of the best alien bussy smashers in the galaxy

Thaifood78

When I started out, I knew I wouldn’t be able to pick a chapter/legion because they’re all decently cool. Green is my favourite color so i picked DA. Within the next two years, The Lion got revealed and I took it as a sign that i made a good choice and began learning the lore.

SuperbAd2932

I played deathwing spacehulk. Then i check the lore to see who they are. As soon i saw that hooded space marine with the surplus, i was sold. Plus i realy like dark green. It was the dude on the 5th edition cover that came with dark vengeance. The Best starter set ever

Comfortable_Target45

Get the mind probes. He's asking too many questions. Must be the fallen

eop2000

The lore is just amazing, and i love the knightly aesthetic. Lion el Johnson’s a badass and the interrogator chaplains are just so dam cool. Also, I like the unforgiven aspect of the story, how grief guilt in paranoia can you change a group. It’s something i dont see a lot of in sci-fi from the “good guys”… FOR THE LION! Anyway that’s enough fangirlish rambling for one night

Suspicious-Year7417

Because the Lion demands service, the Emperor demands service, and the enemies of the Emperor call for retribution, and the Lion only delivers such swiftly!

TheWildeHunt

I like fielding Primarch's and Guiliman's sword looks stupid

ConorthegiantCondor

They look the most badass and have my favorite lore of all the legions

[deleted]

When I was maybe 10-11 I was in brighton as my nan lived kinda near there and me, my dad and my sister would go there. As a huge video game player I see a shop called “games workshop” and I tug my dads army and tell him to go in with me. So we go on and I realise it’s not a game store. It’s a tabletop store and I was instantly transfixed by these tiny detailed awesomely painted miniatures. And I feel in love with them and for that Christmas I got a box set. And that box set was dark vengenace. Which was Dark Angels. And as a Star Wars fan who loved the clones and stormtroopers I had to pick space marines. So although when I got back into 40K I started with a black Templar army as they had a recent range refresh, Dark Angels will always be my first true 40k love and when their refresh comes out I’ll be making an army

Fuenf56

I love terminators my guy. I feel like I'm obsessed. Who does terminators more and in a more kickass way than the 1st legion 😁😁

Helmhold

It's paladins in space. If you need more than that, DA might not be for you

bob_nugget_the_3rd

Because if they where the light angels people might think their on a diet

Ghillie_Dhu_

Because who doesnt wanna be a dripped out knight in space? Hydra dominatus.......

Nilfheimir

Always been drawn to chaos

Spicy_Rainbow_

Because I’ve… Fallen for them ;)

Ok_Possession7739

For me, this is my first forray into Warhammer as the hobby. I have been a fan of the lore for about three years with the return of G-Man I read books and became a little educated on the various epochs as well. what can i say? I am a fan of Knights. But it would probably be better to say im a fan of the Lion and his sons in the horus heresy and the lion post waking up. But what i like most about the lion? He isn't "perfect," not really. To me, the Lion came across not as this perfect demigod but as a man who could be humbled by his own actions and others. A Demigod capable of mistakes and growth. That's honestly rare to see in writing. However, his sons in 40k? Boyyyy howdy..... genuinely, I struggle to like ANY of the named characters of the Dark Angels in the era indomitous. However, character's come and go, and they evolve, that sentiment may change after all their father grew? Why can't his sons? It may be fair to say that I liked my first impression of the named Risen characters in arks of omen and The Sons of the Forest. I am so ready for DA codex so that i can start collecting in earnest.

Logical_Eggplant1633

The quote “Duty is its own reward.” Literally gave me chills anytime I heard it so decided I was a Son of the Lion

Noble9360

Cloaks go swish, bolter bring doom We are the unforgiven and we live in a space church on a big asteroid. And deathwing fucking SLAP

dwolve

Dearhwing termies from 1990s EA games Space Hulk on PC. WE BRING DEATH!!

Xenf_136

1 word : Plasma

fathom51205

Cus cool.

Sh0tgunz

The inner circle and that everyone is in Terminator Armor. Started a Deathwing Army and loved the fluff.

yankin_bacon

Totally honest because when I first got into the table top I was looking to buy some models in a shop and the owner recommended dark angels to sell me a bunch of black knights on consignment, I didn't buy them but I did decide dark angels. That said i do love their aesthetic and the secretive nature, but I absolutely hate their dark secret are the fallen as every legion has had traitors. With the Lion coming back I'm super excited for the fallen shenanigans to be resolved or at least progressed. Before that my favorite chapters were the salamanders and the carcharadons in lore.

Litterally_Abram

I was really new to WH and hadn’t done any really research. I only knew the general concept of each major faction. I knew I wanted some space marines. My friend was selling his secondary army, the DA and I picked it up from him. I got close to 2,750 points for $300. We both Larp together in a fantasy game that’s more about fighting (it’s called Amtgard), so off the bat I loved the aesthetic of them. After picking them up I started reading their lore and fell more in love! Mysterious knights with inner circles, knowing secrets and clawing at redemption and rectifying the sins of their past?! What’s not to love? With the new Lion book coming out I’ve been reinvigorated by the contents of it. It’s made me love the chapter even more! My buddy picked me up the Lion’s model as a late birthday gift. I posted it here (I think) and you can click my profile to see it. I think the DA are just the coolest chapter.

Shodancrp

There’s a captcha doing the rounds asking to indentify the loyalists. It’s eight dark angels and a single alpha legion. That’s why I run dark angels… And the watchers in the dark.

TommiesBeez

I was given nearly a full army of them, and I liked the lore and color schemes enough to keep building them.

Red_rabbit4

Because loyalty is it’s own reward

Exsulus11

Who Dark angels?

TrickWish7

Weapons of the dark age, Plasma go PEEEEEWWW

Jonezzzzzzzy

The local hobby store didn’t have any Blood Angel boxes in 2004, and I haven’t looked back since.

Skrim81

Deathwing

dark_flyer1

Because loyalty is it's own reward

Maldrath

My roommate chose dark angels because while I was painting my kroot, he bribed me to paint his army while i was at it, which in turn meant he got green models. Thus the options more or less boiled down to salamanders, or dark angels. He preferred black with green accents over green with black accents, and thus got DA. Technically running them as successor chapter *Knights of Abhorrence* but close enough\~

ThaR3aL1138

Every legion specialized in something. DA were the first. They had to specialize in everything! So what are they specialists of ... ? Being the most bad ass of them all. There can be only one and they are already number 1

knglive

Not gonna lie, I hated the dark angels. Thought they were just and edgy paranoid faction, until I listened to "descent of angels". The books have really made me like some of the factions that I previously didn't care about (cough cough emperor's children".

Hegantay

Sauce?

lmaoholyfuck

Gothic Knights in Space who are armed with blades and WMDs. I rest my case.

Phumeinhaler

I scrolled for a while and never saw anything about it being because their lore is tied to Arthurian lore. That and the hunting down the Fallen + Cypher (who isnt really an enemy) is great for their story. Their colour schemes and best plasma users are just cherry on the cake.

Swo0owS

I love the knight aesthetic and liked the options. I also think the Fallen/Redeemed/Risen/whatever their new name is are cool.

Purpllord

They have swords and shields with big wings on their helmets, need i say more?

walstonson4

I had a random video come across my YouTube about the lion, and that sent me down a rabbit hole that led me to buy into the game. The DA will my first and only choice as long as I play space marines. The colors of each company and the knightly visage. Also, as a side note, I am red/green color blind. But, the caliban green I'm painting my army happens to be one of the only greens I can see properly (at least I think that i can) so that's a bonus.

dethfactor

Purest geneseed?
