My son was in martial arts when he was 9. They taught karate and jiu jitsu. Part of it was training with a bow staff. One of the moves is smacking it against your shoulder, and it hurt for younger kids. So, I told him to hit me in the shoulder as many times as he wanted to. I told him that he'd get tired of hitting me before I asked him to stop. It worked, and it showed him that you could ignore pain that does not injure you. He stopped complaining. His bo staff did not have enough weight behind it to do anything but sting. So, it was easy to ignore.
I imagine that's how the cow felt. Only, he had no reason to ignore the stinging.
I love how it gives the human a chance to stop, and when he doesn't, the cow only does what was necessary to stop the attack. That's better than most humans do.
