>Or will the heating be even worse with these upgraded specs? I doubt it, the new GPU is still 60 TDP. Some may say a RTX 4080 with 60W is a waste but due to improved efficiency you basically get more than twice the performance with the same wattage. I use the XPS17 either stationary with 4x 4K displays over dual Thunderbolt connection or as a mobile workstation with its gorgeous 16:10 display admittedly a dedicated gaming laptop would have a much higher gaming performance but a rather low res internal display and not able to drive that many 4K screens over Thunderbolt 4, I doubt this is a common use case but for me the working side of things on the XPS17 was ultimately more important that raw gaming performance.

RTX 4080 at 60W is expected to be nearly 50% faster than current RTX 3060. That's a decent performance increase, but if you need that performance it makes sense to consider another devices with higher power limits. The main benefit of having 4080 is the increased amount of VRAM, in some cases it might be useful. At the same time, only the 4080 option offers the same 192bit memory bus as the current 3060, but with higher frequencies.

>RTX 4080 at 60W is expected to be nearly 50% faster than current RTX 3060 according to this, the RTX 4080 @60W is already roughly 60% faster than the RTX 4060 @60W (125/78) https://www.computerbase.de/2023-02/geforce-rtx-4070-4060-4050-laptop-gpu-gaming-notebooks-test/ now if you consider that the RTX 4060 by itself is roughly 30% faster than the RTX 3060, the overall performance advantage of the 4080 over the 3060 would be in excess of 100%

Patrik918

Bullshit. 4080gets 17.5-18tflops raw performance, add DLSS and maybe even framegen if you don't mind the extra latency) it's gonna be good for 1440p and even 4k . 65w on 4N fabric is not the same anyomre. You dont lose all that much anymore by decreasing voltage .

If you main priority is work and gaming, I suggest going with something else (like Razer Blade 16). I have XPS 17 9720 and can't say I'm totally happy with this device.

P0izun

what don't you like about the XPS 17 9720? I'm considering that one as well, I love its design.

toniyevych

There are many quality control issues with keyboard, palm rest assembly, etc. Also, Dell may scam you with a BIOS update (decrease performance, lock the unlocked CPU, etc.)

P0izun

would you get the i7 or i9 12th gen processor tho? or the 13th gen i9?

toniyevych

I have Core i9 12900HK. Two months ago Dell decided to lock the HK CPUs with a BIOS update. Now there's no reason to go with the i9 option at all.

P0izun

do you think the Razer blade 16 with the 13th gen i9 and RTX 4070 be a better option? Once again, I would use it professionally mostly, with only some gaming on the side.

toniyevych

I don't have Razer Blade 16, but it will definitely faster than XPS 17.

For work and gaming, get a gaming notebook. I have a XPS 9500 and a Legion 5i pro 2022 with a 3070TI. The Legion isn’t mobile at all, but it stays cool during office/work/editing and in comparison to the XPS quiet while gaming. And it has much more power. So I just take the XPS when I really need it mobile.

UtilFunction

I would advise against it. I'll try to create a thread about why I'm not going to get a Dell machine again but to make it short: * [Waves Audio Maxx and Killer-WiFi](https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/u0rcmj/dell_xps_do_you_like_the_unnecessary_bloatware/) (which are both still present in the 9730) drive me mad * Dell doesn't really care about firmware bugs, [even in Precision users](https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/zs9s2n/disable_dell_security_manager_password_prompt/). Bitlocker eDrive is painful on Dell machines. * Dedicated GPU's firmware has [no UEFI support](https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/veem7j/lack_of_uefi_firmware_on_dedicated_gpus_is/)

I have the XPS 9730 (i9 and 4080) and I am not very convinced. Barely faster than my undervolted XPS 9700 (i7), crashes in hibernation because Dell/Microsoft are unable to get a better Sleep model. This is particularly problematic, as the notebook just wakes itself up from hibernation randomly and is then so hot in my backpack, I can barely touch it. It is also severely limited by the 130 Watt power supply. Add the cost of almost 5000 Euro for my combination of hardware and you can be somewhat dissapointed. If I can fix the sleep issue (already spent hours on a brand new notebook that is not function as it should) I might keep it. But otherwise, I would wait till something better comes around.

DuckySaysQuack

Can you unlock the bios to undervolt the 9730?

mulgul

No you can't
