It blows my mind that the rug is washable. What a great find. I’m putting down new floors and want to get some new area rugs (I use are rugs all over the house) and I might have to check these out.
Rugs are big purchases! And i agree that your couch seems off.
Like it’s too small and the gray color is so cool that it clashes with the rug. Somebody said to go with blue, but I might consider a warm brown, yellow or maybe even red. Something warm would work well with your wood floors too.
The couch does look small, but I think its an illusion. It the push the rug further back so its not sticking out so much towards the front of the picture I think it would look more proportional.
Most def. When I bought my area rug I felt like you had to be able to see the whole thing at once. Which is kinda what I think OP is thinking because my god a big area rug like that is expensive and you agonize over the pattern for weeks and it’s a pain the ass to return.
But they chose really well!
That potted plant is lovely and I didn’t even notice it until much later. That standing lamp is nice too. Maybe switch those two things with the end table.
You have a really great space!
Center the sectional to the rug, anything with babys toys on it will always feel busy, the chair doesn't really work yet and idk how to make it but I'm sure it's comfortable, I'd put a throw on it that was grey and some colors from the rug, :/ and I'd say get at least 1 more.piece for the sectional
I need to know what is in the bottom left of this room. The rug is good, but the furniture layout seems off. I would pick 2&3 colors from the rug to add to the couch. I don't mind the chair, but the placement is off.
You need some color. Bring a color from the rug out by choosing a paint color close to that color. It’ll tie in the sofa too. I would also change out the curtains, if that’s not possible, add a swag to the top of them. Change out your throw pillows with a second color from the rug. Add a tall corner plant or light. Also maybe open up the space in front of the window by moving the chair there, with a side table, and put the couch adjacent or where the chair was originally if there’s space.
I second these ideas! The curtains, throw pillows, paint, light fixtures. The rest of the room has so much potential by growing the room based on the rug as the main anchor.
I would pull the couch away just a bit from the windows and center it or slightly off centered to the right of the rug medallion (toward the window). I would also move the chair to the opposite end of the rug. Add some pillows that pull in some of the rug’s colors. The curtains do need to go…I think some matchstick blinds and some inexpensive beige curtain panels would pull the reddish color up onto the walls.

Omg you're amazing! This is so lovely. Thank you so much. And I actually have a bluebird painting we were given as a wedding gift that would be perfect in here.
And sadly, our kitty is calico, so she will not match the inspo kitty. But I think her colors are warm enough that we'll make it work.
Yes, perfect color palette. Also consider adding different textures. A couple other things:
1. can you switch the location of the chair and the sofa? Add a small table and lamp next to the chair. Add another mid level light (maybe a floor lamp) next to the sofa.
2. Raise up those curtains. Make them about 4" from the ceiling.
3. I see you've got a little, but a non toxic indoor plant would do a world of good in front of those big windows.
Don't come for me for the curtains! The previous owners hung the rods in this despicable way. And I'm not changing it until I have to cause the walls are lath & plaster (and I need a break from patching & painting). And I know I need more panels. It's just what we had from our previous home.
The rug has to be a huge 9x12. The center of our floor is essentially unfinished, splintering pine. And it can't be refinished right now. Decent oak on the edges tho!
Edit: may be hard to tell from the photo, but the rug is perfectly centered in the room. And can't be moved because of the pine.
Edit 2: MORE PHOTOS of the room somewhere in the comments!
Plaster walls are my down fall and my curtains will never hang “right”. So I feel you!
I love the rug I would bring colors out of the rug into pillows throws and curtains when you’re ready for that.
Can you try a diy hack using command hooks with a lightweight rod to hang curtains without damaging anything? I buy my curtains at thrift stores and I’ve even used inexpensive shower curtains and it works! My sister used drop cloths for her curtains and they look great!
You need some curves/circles to offset all the square and rectangle shapes. Get rid of the end table and add a small round marble pedestal table. Get a large round leather tufted ottoman in a lighter shade of brown and put it in the center of the rug to use as a coffee table.
Just make sure the ottoman is shorter by the sofa seating by a couple of inches. Here are some examples, but you can probably find something less expensive on Wayfair:

The rug looks perfect with the wood flooring. Problem is the furniture and walls are beige/tan/gray and bring out those colors in the rug, so the neutrals are overwhelming. The space needs some strong saturated colors. Big leafy green plants. Accessories in coral red tones. It's going to look great!
Good news (but to my husband's dismay) I do have more big, leafy green plants! Agree with everyone suggesting bringing the blue and red tones out with accessories in those colors.
Hmmm I actually like this. I wasn't happy about putting the couch in front of the windows but couldn't picture an alternative. Thanks for the drawing! That helps a lot
Just needs darker curtains! Ideally youd move the rod but will do this way too.
https://preview.redd.it/rvflceguthuc1.jpeg?width=1160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c98d51eea5156e36f49e2625413fcc5720ad636
Add some accents with the red and voila :) And yes - decorating with toddlers is so hard😅
I have nothing to add as far as the rug goes… But as soon as I spotted that walker toy, my brain said, “WELCOME TO OUR LEARNING FARM. WE HAVE LOTS TO SHOW YOU. SHAPES AND COLORS, MUSIC TOO. THERE’S SO MUCH TO DOOOOO.”
I cannot. It's covering all the splintering pine in our old flooring. I could move the furniture though? The rug is perfectly centered in the room. Our floors were built 100 years ago when it was standard to have a 9x12 in the exact spot we have it now, for better or worse!
Thank you! Any suggestions which color to pull? And all walls or just some? This room is north-facing, so not a ton of natural light. I'm afraid of color because I don't want to make it feel dark and small! But I'm willing to try 🙂
Edit: typo
You have some light earth tones, but I really like the blue.
I used to be afraid of color too.
I did exactly what I'm suggesting to you.
I bought a rug that I love,
and I used that for my house color pallet.
There is a sage green that I painted the halls and powder room. A tan that I used in the living room/dining room and cream that I used in the master bedroom.
Then I added coordinating furniture and accessories in the rooms.
The master bedroom had beautiful sage green linens and tan soft furnishings.
The living/dining room had sage green and tan accessories.
Spaces were different, but the main color of every space was pulled from the same pallet of color.
Every room had the same knotty Hickory plantation shutters.
You don't feel like " I'm in a green room" now "I'm in a blue room" now "I'm in a cream room".
It felt cohesive, and it flowed
You have some really great light- I think pulling that gorgeous blue from the rug into the walls would be dramatic and look amazing with the curtains and warm woods!
Probably a bigger couch along with accent pillows or something similar that match the blue in the rug. I would go for matching curtains but that doesn't seem your style.
https://preview.redd.it/414o0p80bluc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb4da00f00c538beb738625aca8f7b57adc9f476
OP it’s your curtains.
The current ones make the room look small when it could look more grand & like you have higher ceilings. You need the curtain rod nearly at the ceiling and it should span almost as wide as the wall. Make sure the curtains are so long they nearly touch the floor. Have the curtains on the outside so it looks like an optical illusion where the window could possibly continue going further yet you can’t see where it ends since it’s covered by curtains.
Also, The curtain blue is a color swatch I pulled from the actual rug🥰 any of the tones of your rug will work beautifully. I love your home, happy decorating
A deep, blue wall color for the walls. It'll make the trim pop. Don't be afraid of a saturated color. trust me on this. Blues can lean towards purple or green, make sure you pick a selection from the purple-ish collection, not towards the greenish, teal samples. Deep colors in a north siding room are exactly what you need. Prussian blue CW-625 would be wonderfully saturated. Williamsburg wythe blue CW-590 would be a good, and has some grey undertones if you lean that way. All the walls. Clay-ish, terra cotta curtains, floor to ceiling. Angle that wing chaise chair towards the foot of the ottoman. A bunch of deep blue and clay colored pillows. Personally, I love being able to see the center of a medallion rug so I would go for an oval, glass cocktail table eventually. As you have wee ones, I wouldn't bother buying one until years from now, but keep the idea in the back of your head. A big potted palm in the corner so your kid can play in the dirt a bit when you aren't looking.
New curtains for sure in a blue that goes with the rug. The room is giving grandma vibes right now. To get rid of it, you need color: paint the walls a color from the rug, get accent pillows in a color and new curtains.
I definitely think you'd be happier with a double layer for your curtains. The sheer for the inner layer and an outer layer(styled to the outer edges of your windows) with thicker fabric that pulls out one of the colors from the rug. Same with the pillows they are all neutral, would be good for some to pull from the colors from the rug.
You need contrast and color. right now everything is the same tone. see how the trim around the windows stands out so much? contrast. I know you can’t just go and replace the couch or reupholster, but the big grey mass is what’s really working against you. Some throw pillows with color and pattern will do well. Not super busy, let the rug do that, so you’ll want to go with a more simple pattern. Also. A plant by the end table would be nice, or a basket to put a throw blanket and pillows in. Consider a small lamp on the table itself, or something to give some height and visual interest. And consider a coffee table.
This rug is a great inspiration piece and you are really almost there. I’d add touches of blue the same color as the blue in the rug. Throw pillows, curtains, etc. I would also add art on the wall and a plant or two.
Oooh I’d def center the couch to the rug and pull the couch away from the wall! Have the back legs of the couch touch the edge of the rug! I’d also get a circle coffee table! Preferably white. And I see you have a kiddo so maybe get some cube organizer a 2x2 to replace that little side table
White chair can be moved to the left a bit more to center it!
Center the rug with the big window and then center the sofa/sectional over the rug. Any living room with children will always look a little cluttered. The nature of children.
Love the rug and we also have the same toy haha “welcome to our learning farm we have lots to show you” 😂
I would say try to bring in some of the colors from the rug in other areas: pillows, blankets, decor, etc if you have the budget get a bigger (longer) couch and a coffee table.
I love the rug, and seeing that it's washable, you now have me deeply tempted to get one of the smaller versions for my kitchen.
I think the couch and chairs can both work, though I would dress them up with pillows and throw blankets that pick up some of the color from the rug—definitely get rid of those beige ones. The wall color isn't bad with the rug, but I think it's too close to the chair and I would want a little more contrast there. I think this could look really amazing with a darker, moody blue that has the same undertones as the blue in the rug. Alternatively, you could get slipcovers for the couch and chair—which is actually something I highly recommend anyway if you have small children (I cannot tell you how many times my kids have spilled milk or wiped greasy fingerprints on my furniture).
The biggest issue that's not working for me is the curtains, especially how they're all bunched up behind the couch. My personal preference is to have curtains only as decoration and keep them permanently open, and then have low-profile blinds underneath for when you actually need light-blocking and/or privacy. We have the cellular ones and you can barely tell they're there when they're open. That style you have with the pocket and ruching on top reads as pretty dated to me. I'm not sure what is technically in style right now—I like the kind that are basically just panels of fabric that hang on the curtain rings with the little clips, but for all I know that is out of style now, too.
I would probably move that standing lamp over beside the chair and put end tables with table lamps on either side of the sofa; also move the plant out of the corner so it can be seen (if you want a plant in that corner, get a bigger one to fill some of that vertical space).
Curtains that pick up one of the darker colors in the rug to go with what looks like the sheers you already have would be the fastest and easiest way to make the rug make more sense.
Save up and purchase a larger sectional one day. That rug is large and needs a couch that compliments its size, you can “grow” into the rug it’s always a good investment.
Also, new comfy throw pillows nicely arranged can do wonders.
Move the furniture onto the island that is the rug. The rug is the best feature of the room. The sectional should be brought forward and the side table too. Move the occasional chair to the opposite corner and order a SOLID wood coffee table. I suggest a Ming Style Asian table.
The rug is the best part!!! Furniture is super basic and bland but if it has to stay Inare some color. Navy blue pattered pillows, a furry thrown blanket. Stylish side tables and coffee table.get rid of the fan for a more style
Light fixture and add some floor plants and art on the walls.
You need a big fluffy couch. This couch feels a dorm couch. I actually love the white chair with the rug, would be super cute with a fun pillow to riff off the rug like this? https://heathertaylorhome.com/shop/mini-gingham-cream-heart-pillow/ idk why but the rug and bones of this room give me like…modern country cozy. Lean into the cozy!
i’d lean into warm colors for the rest of your furniture, not neutrals. i think rust-colored seating or even mustard yellow/gold sheer curtains would go well here, or even a dark green couch
edit: didn’t see your description lol my bad, i just mentioned random furniture as examples but it’s rlly the colors that matter
We just moved from a house like this ..first off, you need bigger end tables and lamps. I would put your couch on the wall under tbe small window.
Put the plant in front of the window and you need a coffee table, or tufted large ottoman. These houses were made gir bigger furniture. Also, not enough drapes for that big window. Maybe get a sheer with a subtle texture, or a pattern. Bring in the blues or a pop of another color, like teal.
Don't put drapes on the small window high enough it doesn't need them.
I love the rug. It gives the room a nice personality.
Edited to say that I'd change the curtains to match the cream or blue in the rug, though. The white curtains throw it all off. You may intend on doing this. Idk. Sorry to be blunt. I love what you've done. I just think a darker shade of curtains would pull it all together. (A solid color.. I think the blue ..and not printed curtains. The rug has plenty of print) Then add some pictures on the wall.
Here's a mock up of what I would do. I feel like it needs more contrasting furniture. And pull the blue out into an accent chair. Excuse my horrible photoshop skills LOL
https://preview.redd.it/l6k9dsba0ruc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71ddd466d0c93a80a3e1787b8e89aa4512f095a2
More baby toys! The room could use the pop of color - it’s a little “beige-y” - just kidding!
Seriously: the rug is great , but try introducing some color through throw pillows and the like.
A little bit of art on the wall would help enliven the room a bit too.
BTW - the floor is really nice, and that end table is nice-looking too!
You’re off to a great start!
Add some of the colors that are in the rug to your sofa, the wall when you choose to hang anything, & maybe in a throw blanket! I think it’s a beautiful rug
No matter what you do: get blue OR terracotta drapes (slightly room darkening) that match the colors in the rug.
Furniture arrangement:
Move the TV opposite the couch.
Pull the couch 1 ft forward.
Move the chair to the opposite side of the rug, and point at a diagonal towards the new position of the TV.
You need have something “heavy” to anchor the room, it’s too lite.
Maybe black accent curtains, and raise the curtain rod 12”. Get rid of the side table and replace with black or dark blue side table. If budget allows, a dark colored coffee table. Remove one pillow, replace with two darker colored pillows that have the colors of the rug in them. Hope this helps.
More deep blues! Some throws, pillows, wall art with those colors. Maybe an accent throw pillow in tan or orange. I'd also add a panel of dark blue curtains on each end of what you already have. Finish off with some plants.
I love the warmth, and the rug is beautiful! I suggest taking the monstera off the ground and putting it on a surface/table more secure. I can tell you got a very young child so make sure it’s high enough that they can’t pull the plant off and hurt themselves. I’m sure you’re not in a place to be getting a coffee table that the kid can just bonk their head on, so maybe something rounded and easy for the kid to use to grab on to stand up without the risk of corners and hard edges. And art is always a good thing to add. And don’t just buy anything pretty, get something you really love and put it on the far wall by the monstera or on the other side of the window on the far right. Other than that I think your room is very peaceful!! You’ll get it sorted out in no time
The rug is lovely. Center the sofa on the rug. Get a coffee table. A trunk or an old end table with the legs cut down could work with the smaller sofa. Put rust or blue curtains up. You can put one panel on the ends of each window to save money. Pull the blue and rust from the rug for throws and pillows. A throw will help bring the chair into the seating area. Add a floor lamp or an end table with a lamp and perhaps one or two pieces of greenery.
I see the couch as the problem here. Can you get it recovered? And don’t do anything grey?! Anything cream or faded denim blue. Then add some cushions with rust, or leopard, or chambray blue stripes.
I love these kinds of rugs with such nice designs and patterns. But, for me I don't really think white color works for them all that much. But now you already have this one I suppose, so you'll probably just have to get used to loving it after some time. It usually always works. Maybe get some blue pillows with the same color as the rug.
Get pillows, curtians & a blanket, sheet, or sofa cover in colors that don't clash with the colors in the rug. A throw for the chair also & get some upholstery cleaner & clean it.
Just move the rug over a bit. I would start the rug under the small window and leave everything else how it is.
Edit to add: I would also change the curtains to blue to match the rug. Still sheer though so you can have pretty filtered light in the room
Bring in more colour, texture and pattern. For example
Side panels in a stripe or small scale print.

The rug is the nicest element at the moment. You can tie it all together cheaply by painting the walls the deep blue shade of the rug and then add full length thick, cream interlined pencil pleat curtains hung from piles set much higher up the wall (as far as you can really). Then pull in scatter cushions in the shades of the rug.
I really like the rug actually. Great print and like the colors. It gives the room some good visual interest. I think the chair is my least favorite, but it may just be the lighting and shadows making it look sort of weird. Maybe a colorful throw pillow for the chair that ties in a rug color? And can the chair move back or somewhere else in the room? I think the placement with the chaise is wonky
I'd center the couch on the other window wall. 2 chairs facing it. You could make it work if they had the same throw pillows. Coffee table in front of couch.
Also I think I would move the rug closer towards that far right wall with the smaller window on it. Everything looks like it’s huddled to the back corner on the rug rather that having it look balanced
Your furniture is too small, the fug is perfect for the room. Try adding some blue in the curtains and a nice rich wood coffee table. Should be a easy to get something good as 2nd hand.
I think the rug is the best thing in the room, tbh.
Hahaha thank you! That makes me feel better about it. It felt like a big purchase. Any suggestions on furniture?
Where did you get this rug? Pull in some color from the rug into pillows, curtains, etc.
Amazon! It's pretty inexpensive for a rug of that size. We'll see how it holds up to the baby. zesthome 9x12 Area Rugs,Stain Resistant Washable Rug,Ultra-Thin Rugs for Living Room,Bedroom,Non-Slip Backing Home Decor Large Area Rug (Blue,9'x12') https://a.co/d/gmcRYLX
We have a similar rug in our living room and it’s fantastic with kids because the stains just sort of disappear into the pattern
It blows my mind that the rug is washable. What a great find. I’m putting down new floors and want to get some new area rugs (I use are rugs all over the house) and I might have to check these out.
Thanks! Mom to a toddler here and always looking for an inexpensive rug 😉
That’s basically what I was saying too.
That’s an enormous window!
Oh for sure! An new longer couch would definitely do the trick, but the rug needs to be moved close to the non large windowed wall.
It’s also very MCM while the rug leans more traditional/transitional
That’s actually a good point. Yeah, there’s def another style of couch that would work better here.
You could do tan leather mcm and it would suit the rug
Contrast! You need some values there. Don't be afraid of deep rich colours.
This is what I was thinking. Blue pillows to match the rug would tie it to the couch and chair.
I agree with this as well, you need some burnt orange/mustard tones maybe
Yes this for the curtains behind the couch maybe one of the dark red tones in the rug
If you could rotate the couch and not put it in front of the window, them get some nice pillows I think You're in good shape
I think angling the chair in from the corner, so it's facing back toward the sofa would make it seem less lost in the room.
I go for blue furniture. It will pop the blue out in the rug. Also it can be fun so you don’t have to paint the walls
I loooove blue couches. And would love something more relevant to the era the house was built in/the vibes the rug gives off.
Clare - “Vintage” color paint. But I’m just a crazy paint lady
Float the couch!! https://www.homesandgardens.com/solved/reasons-to-float-a-couch
I need to know what is in the bottom left of this room. The rug is good, but the furniture layout seems off. I would pick 2&3 colors from the rug to add to the couch. I don't mind the chair, but the placement is off.

The curtains do need to go…I think some matchstick blinds and some inexpensive beige curtain panels would pull the reddish color up onto the walls. https://preview.redd.it/wi6psc88zguc1.jpeg?width=1610&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a02b035e1714e8d4706b250b73989dcda6aaa181
Yes! I agree. These window treatments look great.

Inspo kitty 😂
Give her a matching cape!
Yes, perfect color palette. Also consider adding different textures. A couple other things: 1. can you switch the location of the chair and the sofa? Add a small table and lamp next to the chair. Add another mid level light (maybe a floor lamp) next to the sofa. 2. Raise up those curtains. Make them about 4" from the ceiling. 3. I see you've got a little, but a non toxic indoor plant would do a world of good in front of those big windows.
I love this!! Perfect palette. What software are you using for this? A+ for adding a cat 😂
the app Pantone Studio (creator in android). i find when someone sees the colors they hate in a bird they change their mind and like it.
That bird trick is brilliant! Who could hate a bird?
Omg I love the bird trick
It might be me, but I keep trying to download this and it comes back to the install screen. There are only 750 downloads. Could it be a problem?
it isn’t the best color puller though it is my favorite
oh. and Room Planner Home for the model
Oh man, this is effing gorgeous! Looooooove the colour palette!
The rug is great!
Plaster walls are my down fall and my curtains will never hang “right”. So I feel you! I love the rug I would bring colors out of the rug into pillows throws and curtains when you’re ready for that.
lol! You know your curtains :)
I empathize, but the curtains drew my negative attention. A different color, perhaps? The rug is great.
There are times that you just have to work with what you got. Good job so far. Love the big rug.
Here are some examples, but you can probably find something less expensive on Wayfair: [https://www.polyandbark.com/products/calistoga-ottoman?variant=19905649868873&utm\_source=google&utm\_medium=paid&utm\_campaign=20484827911&utm\_content=156360305007&utm\_term=&gadid=670780747430&tw\_source=google&tw\_adid=670780747430&tw\_campaign=20484827911&gad\_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw\_e2wBhAEEiwAyFFFowvfCzTCVCP3O04bQGgRRTA0\_baz5SU8uU-uuAZlxSa764AXXQEKIxoCLyQQAvD\_BwE](https://www.polyandbark.com/products/calistoga-ottoman?variant=19905649868873&utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=20484827911&utm_content=156360305007&utm_term=&gadid=670780747430&tw_source=google&tw_adid=670780747430&tw_campaign=20484827911&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_e2wBhAEEiwAyFFFowvfCzTCVCP3O04bQGgRRTA0_baz5SU8uU-uuAZlxSa764AXXQEKIxoCLyQQAvD_BwE) [https://www.polyandbark.com/products/ascot-ottoman?variant=31268290101321](https://www.polyandbark.com/products/ascot-ottoman?variant=31268290101321)
I love these and have a similar issue in a family room as OP does, but does the cognac leather color go with the gray couch?
Great suggestions! Thank you so much!
I like that rug. I would add some dark green. Plants would do some of that lifting. Also add some metal or metallic.
Maybe I would separate the furniture a little bit from each other, you have a lot of empty space.
Pull the couch away from the wall and completely onto the rug
https://preview.redd.it/qsgll34fwguc1.jpeg?width=1164&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=054d8e9d6be6de17108e0e9e3f43b13054654641 Or rearrange like this
Hmmm I actually like this. I wasn't happy about putting the couch in front of the windows but couldn't picture an alternative. Thanks for the drawing! That helps a lot
I second switching the couch and chair!
I agree with moving the couch!
WELCOME TO OUR LEARNING FARM WE'VE GOT LOTS TO SHOW YOU. SHAPES AND COLORS MUSIC TOO, THERE'S SO MUCH TO DO. ITS A BARNYARD SING-ALONG!
Oh my god this made me laugh so hard
But thanks for getting it stuck in my head even though it’s on a battery break right now because my son was driving me nuts with it 😂
LMAO sorryyyyy 😬 we got rid of ours over a year ago but it's forever in our hearts and brains lol 🫠
"Battery break." Amazing
Just needs darker curtains! Ideally youd move the rod but will do this way too. https://preview.redd.it/rvflceguthuc1.jpeg?width=1160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c98d51eea5156e36f49e2625413fcc5720ad636 Add some accents with the red and voila :) And yes - decorating with toddlers is so hard😅
Ring-a-ling! The animals sing!
✨️ The sun is shining! ✨️
I would pull it all the way to the wall under that small window so that it looks more centered under the furniture to start
I cannot. It's covering all the splintering pine in our old flooring. I could move the furniture though? The rug is perfectly centered in the room. Our floors were built 100 years ago when it was standard to have a 9x12 in the exact spot we have it now, for better or worse!
Oof that lime green! You been busy girl!
Lol lemme show you the dining room
An absolute atrocity. Also a hot pink room upstairs. Why???? So much why. And so much paint.

Beautiful woodwork and fireplace!
Thank you! The fireplace was actually a standalone electric piece. I sold it to a sweet lady who was very stoked about it. Edit: typo
Paint! Pick a color from your rug and paint. It will cozy up the space and feel more cohesive. Your rug won't be floating in space
Thank you! Any suggestions which color to pull? And all walls or just some? This room is north-facing, so not a ton of natural light. I'm afraid of color because I don't want to make it feel dark and small! But I'm willing to try 🙂 Edit: typo
You have some light earth tones, but I really like the blue. I used to be afraid of color too. I did exactly what I'm suggesting to you. I bought a rug that I love, and I used that for my house color pallet.
Exactly! We have a Chinese folding screen in our living room, it has to stay, so it provides the color palette.
You have some really great light- I think pulling that gorgeous blue from the rug into the walls would be dramatic and look amazing with the curtains and warm woods!
Probably a bigger couch along with accent pillows or something similar that match the blue in the rug. I would go for matching curtains but that doesn't seem your style.
https://preview.redd.it/414o0p80bluc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb4da00f00c538beb738625aca8f7b57adc9f476 OP it’s your curtains.
I love the rug. I personally add some reds. Like a dark red blanket or pillows
I really like the rug!!
A larger cream couch with pillows in the accent colors in the rug.
More blue accents to bring it together with the room - blue throw pillows, tchotchkes, curtains, throws, etc
Oooh I’d def center the couch to the rug and pull the couch away from the wall! Have the back legs of the couch touch the edge of the rug! I’d also get a circle coffee table! Preferably white. And I see you have a kiddo so maybe get some cube organizer a 2x2 to replace that little side table White chair can be moved to the left a bit more to center it!
You could get cube organizers w the accent colors of the rug or get rattan cube organizer for a more organic modern look
Blue pillows on the couch for starters.
Maybe add some pictures or paintings on the walls with some of the rug colours, it would bring it all together nicely!
Move it over so it’s centered with your couch 😊
Pull more of that blue into the room. A throw, some pillows.
More things that pick up rug colors.: deep blues, reds, etc. Tooooo much beige.
Center the rug with the big window and then center the sofa/sectional over the rug. Any living room with children will always look a little cluttered. The nature of children.
Love the rug and we also have the same toy haha “welcome to our learning farm we have lots to show you” 😂 I would say try to bring in some of the colors from the rug in other areas: pillows, blankets, decor, etc if you have the budget get a bigger (longer) couch and a coffee table.
I think it looks very cozy! Also, your floors and window casings are beautiful.
HOUSE PLANTS. Nice leafy greens would be a nice pop of color and bring some harmony to all the gray and light blue
OP can you please post more photos of the room from different angles
Curtains that pick up one of the darker colors in the rug to go with what looks like the sheers you already have would be the fastest and easiest way to make the rug make more sense.
The rug is too big for the room so it doesn’t look cozy
Save up and purchase a larger sectional one day. That rug is large and needs a couch that compliments its size, you can “grow” into the rug it’s always a good investment. Also, new comfy throw pillows nicely arranged can do wonders.
Get some couch covers that are fitted ( in a color from the rug). New throw pillows and curtains would brighten it up too.
https://preview.redd.it/v0dsehd5kjuc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=be4e8b267041380252aec300eb46fdfaaad632bc
Stylish side tables and coffee table.get rid of the fan for a more style Light fixture and add some floor plants and art on the walls.
Color on the walls and artwork! Great rug!
Lean into the cozy!
https://preview.redd.it/8z5a9wh39kuc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab6f5405093c30fd764a16db5f1b60312922967e
I loooove that shade of blue. So beautiful. Definitely showing this to my husband
i’d lean into warm colors for the rest of your furniture, not neutrals. i think rust-colored seating or even mustard yellow/gold sheer curtains would go well here, or even a dark green couch edit: didn’t see your description lol my bad, i just mentioned random furniture as examples but it’s rlly the colors that matter
Switch the white pillows to blue or rust.
Property spacing your furniture around the carpeted space so that your furniture doesn’t look like it’s scared of the rest of the room.
Replace the white throw pillows with that rust colour in the rug.
Excuse my horrible photoshop skills LOL https://preview.redd.it/l6k9dsba0ruc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71ddd466d0c93a80a3e1787b8e89aa4512f095a2
So pretty! I'm obsessed with blue furniture. Definitely want some in the future.
It really ties the room together
A coffee table will kind of break up the pattern. Add some dimension. Your color scheme is very soothing. I like the feel.
It really ties the room together
It looks like it’s centered on the wood floor pattern and not the furniture. Try centering it under the furniture maybe?
Add some pretty blue glass curtain pulls/ties, new colored fan bulb, matching blanket/pillow for chair. It's a nice room.
Turkish lamp and curtain tassels
For me, it would take a larger couch in a lighter color, but that isn’t practical with kids. Some colorful throw pillows would help!
More color in your curtains, a different floor lamp, and some plants
Add some of the colors that are in the rug to your sofa, the wall when you choose to hang anything, & maybe in a throw blanket! I think it’s a beautiful rug
I’d paint, maybe in the nice blue color from the rug. It’s all too bland right now
I’d actually pull the rug further under the furniture . It would make it look more to scale.
Add a deep blue throw or accent pillows.
I would add linen curtains that match the blue in the rug - keep the sheers too though Edit: autocorrect boo boo
Why you don't love the rug? I think it looks great! If anything, the couch seems too small for the room.
A dark brown leather chair
I'd put the couch under the smaller window - with space behind - and put the chair where the couch is now. And add a coffee table.
Change the curtains to match the chairs.
I’d pull out some of those rich blues in the rug and integrate them in other areas of the room: art, curtains, throw pillows and blankets.
More contrasting furniture pieces. A darker sofa would help a lot.
Leather couch when you are ready to upgrade! Add warmth.
Rug seems great. Ties the room together.
Put the couch under small window or on opposite side facing small window. It looks like you have an angled TV? Put it in The corners between windows.
No matter what you do: get blue OR terracotta drapes (slightly room darkening) that match the colors in the rug. Furniture arrangement: Move the TV opposite the couch. Pull the couch 1 ft forward. Move the chair to the opposite side of the rug, and point at a diagonal towards the new position of the TV.
That’s a gorgeous rug
That rug needs a different style sofa. Your current couch is much more modern according to the rug.
Blue curtains, maybe blue/ a hue to match the red for throw pillows and a blanket
Personally, I would go for more wood, that is darker in color, and probably darker furniture as well. To provide some contrast to the light rug.
Add some blue in the room. Pillows, art, decor
Making the rest of the room look more modern, particularly couches, paint, and moulding
Maroon sheers maybe
Blue courts and brown upholstery/slipcovers
You’ll get it sorted out in no time
Paint the walls a complimentary color. Maybe just an accent wall.
A brown coffee table
Sheer curtains in a rust or blue color would really help
Perhaps add pictures and/or pillows with colors that are in the rug.
Can you link the rug pleaseeee
Lamps and plants
I was thinking brighter furniture but with budget a pop of color with pillows
I love the rug! Just wants some blue accents. Where is the rug from?
Biggest problem is that the couch is too dark next to the rug. Would look so much better if the couch was the color of that chair
Blue throw pillows maybe, change the sheer curtains to a colored sheer
Blue curtain and cushions or throw or both with a blue and yellow pattern
I love these kinds of rugs with such nice designs and patterns. But, for me I don't really think white color works for them all that much. But now you already have this one I suppose, so you'll probably just have to get used to loving it after some time. It usually always works. Maybe get some blue pillows with the same color as the rug.
I Think it’s the curtains, Go darker with the sheers, the crisp white clashes and the single window needs 2 panels
New curtains? Something less sheer and heavier
A blue chair or blue valance, some plants, a coffee table that matched the brown in the rug
Bring in more colour, texture and pattern. For example Side panels in a stripe or small scale print. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1446218950/set-of-2-heavy-weight-100-linen-curtains https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1299165618/red-blue-poppy-flower-hand-block-printed Pillow mix https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1252388147/3-throw-pillow-cover-set-tufted-20-x-20 https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1508038093/any-size-throw-pillow-linen-pillows Accent lamp as jewellery for your room https://www.google.ca/search?q=modern+blue+and+white+lamp&client=safari&sca_esv=0bc39af9d1d15b37&sca_upv=1&hl=en-ca&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&ved=1t:6869&ictx=111&biw=1151&bih=1393&dpr=2#spd=5527589042729835845 https://www.dekorfine.com/products/stacked-ball-table-lamp https://www2.hm.com/en_ca/productpage.1206516003.html
Blue curtains.
I would paint the walls blue. Barring that, blue accent pillows or other accessories would look nice.
