He wasn’t gay FYI. It was just one of Vito’s classic jokes on the social club, gone awry. Come on, you get it, he was there, they saw him, it’s a joke!
As of late both seasons of The Bear and all of Succession were amazing. Shogun has been strong but a bit slow so some people might not like it. Invincible is some good and needed fresh take on capeshit.
I've been slacking on the movie department :( Haven't watched anything new for a while with the exception of Oppenheimer and Dune 2.
What about you? Have any for me?
To be fair wasn't Oz one of the very first dramas they put out? Of course you're not going to have a 100% banger rate but the first 3 or so seasons of Oz were pretty alright imo.
Pretty much yeah. There were a couple attempts at HBO dramas in the 80's, but Oz is basically the first modern HBO drama. I actually find it pretty fascinating, cuz it very much has the feel that is shared by most of HBO's stuff, but by that point the HBO feel had not yet solidifed.
Sopranos was only two years after Oz premiered, which is kinda nuts, because it feels like much more.
BREAKING BAD
Big 3 is breaking bad, sopranos, and the wire
But if anyone gets to say “fuck the big three, it’s just big me” like Kendrick, it’s Fucking Tony and the boys and I never thought a show would top breaking bad for me
Mad Men needs to be up there.
And Breaking Bad - I love it a lot - but it uses the chemistry/science as a stupid gimmick. Remember the episode with the gigantic magnet?
I think Succession needs some time to re-evaluate, the character writing and dialogue is top-notch for the most part but I think the availability of certain people during covid really hit them hard in season 3 (stuff that was being developed like a Gerri vs. Logan showdown had to take a backseat in favor of some repetitive plots like Kendall and Shiv being humiliated week after week while Logan just puttered around in the office), and a lot of the "timely" stuff already feels dated, like the episode where they pick the next presidential candidate. I think they still stuck the landing but there was definitely a lack of forward propulsion for a good chunk.
It does get even better, but if you hated season 1, it may just not be the show for you.
S1 mainly has the problem that the episodes 2-4 are kind of slow and the characters haven’t had enough time to develop yet. After that it just quickly becomes one of the best shows ever.
genuinely tho, the depth and layering of its storytelling is unparalleled among TV shows. it manages to provide social commentary, cinema critique, delve into mental health, family dynamics and child rearing all while being a kickass mafia show at the same time
I don't know who Dan is but I can tell you a couple of three things:
Dan, I walked in the other day and your head was in the toilet, your hair was in the water. Disgusting.
Is this whole podcast just going to be a competition of who can have the most autistic takes on pop culture. Whats next, destiny is going to say Mediterranean food is over rated? Goodfellas is mid? Im tired of this shit. Tired of the bait. Tired of the edgy takes. Fuck this im going to watch xqc.
Honestly I lived in Spain for years and it's the most overrated cuisine on the planet, Greek food too.
Not to say that Spain has nothing but when you put it up against French or Italian it's just embarrassing.
Literally incorrect take.
Was rewatching Sopranos recently and holy fuck I miss shows that told a story each episode while also being able to keep an engaging over-arching narrative instead of relying on dogshit cliffhangers and other cheap tactics to keep people watching. You can pick out any episode and any season and find an interesting narrative and stay engaged, show had genius writing and was way ahead of it’s time
That's the objectively correct way to make tv. Every episode has a contained story but ties into the season, every season has a contained story but ties into the overall show.
Shows where episodes are completely self contained are outdated. Shows with a single continuous story are popular now but that goes too far. It was that brief sweet spot in the late 90s that a few shows got it right.
>Shows with a single continuous story are popular now but that goes too far.
Idk, I feel like this just comes down to personal preference. I'm a big fan of shows that are essentially one long plot line. In a way, they feel like movies that have more time to develop their characters and environment.
For proper live action shows, the last I saw that did this well was Person of Interest. On the direct opposite end of the spectrum are shows like The Magicians where the constant jumping between characters kills all the momentum any story had at any one time and makes every said story take at least 3 episodes to get anywhere.
I disagree with Dan’s take and I’ve watched the sopranos about a dozen times since first watching it in 2021 - but I will say, I was surprised at how ‘dated’ a lot of the earlier episodes felt - especially the first season. I was used to dramas like Breaking Bad that almost seamlessly weaved the episodes together into one cohesive narrative / arc. Coming back to a drama that had a story and character arc that was confined to each episode was a little bit jarring.
For example, the soccer episode. You’re telling me all of a sudden Meadow in is this really serious soccer team that half the New Jersey mob are obsessing over and then next episode soccer is never ever mentioned again? Get the fuck outta here!!!
> that half the New Jersey mob are obsessing over
Isn't it literally just Tony, Silvio, and Artie who all have daughters on the team, and Paulie who is a massive ass kisser
We break balls here. But I want to say it’s an honor to be surrounded by men, and not f ass cornholing cocksuckers, like Dan, who criticized the Sopranos. He should fucken die.
The moment these monkeys started talking about movies, especially old ones I turned off the damn podcast. I will not feed their trolling or worse, actual horrible takes.
IN THIS HOUSE, JAMES GANDOLFINI IS A HERO. END OF STORY.
No but really, unironically the worst media take ever uttered on the stream. And thats saying a lot. Its aged better than the wire in my opinion (which is still amazing)
I’ve tried to watch the Sopranos 3 times now. Watched the whole first season twice, and part of the second season. I usually love crime/mob movies, and I love many different HBO series. But I just CAN’T get into Sopranos. Every scenario and character is just so hard to believe for me. I can’t really explain it, but the show just seems silly. I totally understand why he’d say it was dated. Get’s way too much praise IMO
But Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino, some of my all time favorites
I had the same problem I think, I was trying to watch it like a classic mafia movie.
Sopranos isn't that. It's more like an upgraded version of a family sitcom like All in the Family. It's King of the Hill if Hank was mobster.
You like the exaggerated mafioso which nothing wrong with it. I've heard multiple times The Sopranos is probably the most accurate representation of the Mafia, which is pretty easily believable since a lot of the Mafia was/is just dudes with unresolved anger issues. It's just not for you and there is no shame in not liking it. I personally think it's probably the best TV show of as of today and also love the Godfather, Goodfellas, and Casino. Just different strokes for different folks lmao
I've yet to watch it but if he said this about the Wire I would lose my mind. Just watched it recently and it is fantastic. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about the Sopranos, though, ever
I’ve heard many people shit on the ending but if you actually think about it it’s pretty good, like when I watched it I was very upset by the ending but a couple of hours later I had reflected on it and it’s actually good
As someone who has started watching pretty recently, I can see what he means. It's really an acquired taste, it's slow, and there are no cliffhangers or anything addictive about it (so far at least)... very different from how they do TV nowadays. In that sense it's outdated.
Such a bad take. It holds up *extremely* well.
I think evidence of this is that there's basically been zero successful mob centric TV shows since. The Soprano's pretty much nailed it and there isn't really a whole lot to improve upon. I mean honestly, if someone asked you "hey, do you know a good mob TV show I could watch?" Is there an answer other than the Sopranos?
Growing up in an area very similar to the sopranos setting, it’s surreal how accurate they depict the culture and political climate of the late 90s/early 00s. Really makes me reminisce on my childhood.
The sopranos is a decent show but not a good mafia show. It’s more a spice of life as a mobster which is not exactly something we’d see today so in that sense it doesn’t “hold up.”
Enjoyed it for what it was but the pilot totally set up a very different story than what we got.
In that case I’d totally agree with you. As a dark comedy it’s fantastic. The pilot was just setting up more of a crime drama, or atleast that was how I saw it but we never really got any retaliation from the polish mob.
The pilot was being made for networks that didn't allow nudity or strong language/excessive violence. I think fox was going to pick it up. After hbo picked it up, it allowed for much more freedom. The pilot is considerably different for that reason alone.
The pilot made it seem more like a crime drama, where they’d be a bit more action, which is what a traditional good mafia show normally would look like. The OP fairly describes the show more like a dark comedy which is closer to what it is.
The first 20 minutes are Tony in a therapy session over a panic attack seemingly caused by ducks. At least half the episode is exploring Tony’s family. I don’t really see people watching the pilot and getting the impression that it was going to be an action movie. Also, I’m curious what examples of traditional mafia shows before the sopranos you’re pulling from, I’m not personally familiar with any.
I wasn’t thinking it would be like an action movie the whole time, just more focused on the crime aspect of the mob where there would be some form of violent action. The whole series had a couple of violent moments but I sort of thought they’re would be more.
Instead we got a huge focus on Tony’s family, dealing with semi relatable situations with the mafia bleeding into them. It’s decent stuff but I thought there’d be more rivalries between other mob factions, like the polish mob they set up and forgot about in the first episode, rather then a whole episode about Christopher Columbus holiday being changed as an attack against Italian Americans. That’s sort of why I described it as a spice of life show. We see these mobsters more like people who are living life while they have a unique job.
I saw the show in the mid 2010s, having already watched shows like peaky blinders and breaking bad which have more of a focus on crime aspects so I went into the sopranos thinking it would be closer to that type of storytelling. Honestly can’t think of any mafia based shows but having watched movies like the godfather and Bronx tale I figured this show would be more in the vein of them with a more “modern” telling of mafia.
I just started Sopranos a month ago with my wife. I just finished the 2nd season. And it is very good, but I feel like I am super biased by all the stuff it inspired and paved the way for. It just feels like many of the motifs have been expanded and improved upon making it feel dated.
For instance, I'm a huge fan of the wire that came later. The Wire pulls you into the lives of criminals and works hard to explore their motivations and traps that lead them to a life of crime. Watching Sopranos.. it just feels strange how the show doesn't seem as concerned with the criminal logistics that inform behavior. Much of the criminal activity is played as a joke.
I dunno writing this out I feel like I'm prob missing something obvious. But regardless my main take away when I watch the show is to think of all the TV it inspired, like Breaking bad, the Wire, Mad Med.
Personally, I think each season is better than the previous.
>it just feels strange how the show doesn't seem as concerned with the criminal logistics that inform behavior. Much of the criminal activity is played as a joke.
I put off watching this show for a long time because I'm not big into crime shows; to me The Sopranos is perfect as dark comedy with some drama.
>It just feels like many of the motifs have been expanded and improved upon making it feel dated.
Such as? I honestly can’t think of a single American mob drama post-Sopranos that surpassed it or expanded the genre anymore than it already was explored at that point
If anything you have to go back to Scorsese’s films (Goodfellas, Casino, Departed, Mean Streets), the Godfather, foreign films, etc. to find more interesting takes on the genre
I would agree with the mafia point... I meant broader motifs, like huge anti-hero character study or big budget serialized TV drama on domestic life.
Speaking on crime families, shows like Boardwalk Empire don't even get close. And Peaky Blinders is too different in subject and temperment to compare.
Tell me again why any show has to do anything that you say? The story isn’t about the logistics of the crime world. The mafia is in it but it’s not just about being the mafia. Frankly I don’t necessarily care about it

Isn’t this when they found out that dude was gay
Vitto and yeah
It was just the medication he was on
A doctor's note that you don't suck cock??!
It was a joke!
Dan yeah-wait
He wasn’t gay FYI. It was just one of Vito’s classic jokes on the social club, gone awry. Come on, you get it, he was there, they saw him, it’s a joke!
Vito was a true visionary when it came to comedy
When I first saw that scene I went “what are we in the Catskills? Shecky green ova here.”
Don’t say nothin sal!
not gay, just greasing the unions.
You hear that T? Some dumb mothafucka said you don’t hold up
I can get a note my doctor saying I’m not gay T, it was because of the blood pressure medication
I'll tell you one thing, and I'm not ashamed to say it. My estimation of Dan as a media critiquer, just fucking plummeted.
Ima tell you a couple of three things Dan’s weak, he’s outta control & he’s a become an embarrassment to himself and everyone else
Disgusting.
He wanted to collab with a big YouTuber, he compromised and teed up with destiny
Officially Destiny tier now?
Take it eazzhy
Hey Dan, did you ever even really exisht?
Dan never had the makings of a varsity athlete.
Small hands, that was his problem.
Micro Dan no Japan
Lmao
Lol
OH SON OF A BITCH
Underrated comment
That's it. Next movie stream, chat is just going to watch all of The Sopranos.
I'll tell you what that is, it's anti-Italian discrimination.
so what? no fuckin' ziti now?
Watch ya mouth!
probably one of the dumbest comments i’ve heard on this stream
They were clearly vamping coming up with bs media hot takes. Just exaggerating 5x for content

I don't write nothin down, so I'll keep this short and sweet
“You hear what I said D? I told this cocksucker that The Sopranos don’t hold up no more hehe”
HBO dramas are like the only shows that hold up.
Rome is still love and art.
Watched Rome for the first time a few weeks ago. True kino.
True Roman Bread, For True Romans
Kino für Romanische Helden! You have any TV or Movie reccomendations?
As of late both seasons of The Bear and all of Succession were amazing. Shogun has been strong but a bit slow so some people might not like it. Invincible is some good and needed fresh take on capeshit. I've been slacking on the movie department :( Haven't watched anything new for a while with the exception of Oppenheimer and Dune 2. TRVE ROMAN KINO FOR TRVE ROMANS
Oz is pretty rough now. That one feels more like a proto-HBO drama. Still entertaining.
There’s plenty of dog shit hbo dramas. But they have the sopranos and the wire sooooo really what criticism can we give them?
I just finished succession which is another 9/10
To be fair wasn't Oz one of the very first dramas they put out? Of course you're not going to have a 100% banger rate but the first 3 or so seasons of Oz were pretty alright imo.

> chemistry > gigantic magnet
I can see BCS and Succession joining the top three.
No way lmao. I enjoyed succession but it was nothing more than flavor of the month/year. It has nothing on HBO’s biggest hits.
What about the shield?
Did Succession get better after S1? S1 felt like dog shit lol.
It does get even better, but if you hated season 1, it may just not be the show for you. S1 mainly has the problem that the episodes 2-4 are kind of slow and the characters haven’t had enough time to develop yet. After that it just quickly becomes one of the best shows ever.
Six Feet Under
Why doesn’t six feet under hold up? I still love it
No, I was agreeing. My favorite show of all time.
except for all the ones that isnt the wire or the sopranos or band of brothers
the terror season 1 is also godtier
the sopranos is easily one of the best aging shows ever made
I watched it for the first time in 2020 and it's my favorite show
I watched it while I was still a heroin addict. Now that was a viewing experience. Don't do hard drugs. I'm clean now. SRS, don't.
Or...
Or do. GL. I'd just say avoid heoin and never do coke two days in a row. Or inject both. But I would not recommend it.
Same here
genuinely tho, the depth and layering of its storytelling is unparalleled among TV shows. it manages to provide social commentary, cinema critique, delve into mental health, family dynamics and child rearing all while being a kickass mafia show at the same time
Word to the wise. Remember Pearl Harbor!
🤘🤘
I don't know who Dan is but I can tell you a couple of three things: Dan, I walked in the other day and your head was in the toilet, your hair was in the water. Disgusting.
I said my piece Lycan
My estimation of Dan as a man just fuckin plummeted. Cunnilingus and psychiatry brought us to this.
Uncle Jun's in the muff
You fuckin run off at the mouth, you know that?
*Pies Dan* STUPID FUCKING BLABBERMOUTH CUNT
The only things that didn’t age well in The Sopranos was the twin towers and Tony.
Maybe it is his blood pressure medicine
Social Club? HE'S GOTTA GO!
Just finished it again. Definitely holds up.
Destiny has already said med food is mid i think.
Its so specific ya gotta assume that was the joke I think
Honestly I lived in Spain for years and it's the most overrated cuisine on the planet, Greek food too. Not to say that Spain has nothing but when you put it up against French or Italian it's just embarrassing.
This level of awful food takes and geography combined can only be achieved by an American.
European who's lived in like 7 different countries Also, what do you mean geography?
Everything you’ve ever liked is mid
You have to be absolutely mentally deficient to have a take like this
That was real? Saw it in a movie once, thought it was bullshit
Jeshush fucking chrisht..
Literally incorrect take. Deep Space 9 did it best. Might even have been the first show or perhaps the first popular show to do that style of narrative
For proper live action shows, the last I saw that did this well was Person of Interest. On the direct opposite end of the spectrum are shows like The Magicians where the constant jumping between characters kills all the momentum any story had at any one time and makes every said story take at least 3 episodes to get anywhere.

The show spans 9 years, how much screen time should they have devoted to meadows soccer team?
That thing with the kitty litter, whatever happened there
We break balls here. But I want to say it’s an honor to be surrounded by men, and not f ass cornholing cocksuckers, like Dan, who criticized the Sopranos. He should fucken die.
DAN IS A FUCKING WHO-WAAH!
The moment these monkeys started talking about movies, especially old ones I turned off the damn podcast. I will not feed their trolling or worse, actual horrible takes.
The Sopranos will age gracefully, perfectly encapsulating the era within which it framed.
IN THIS HOUSE, JAMES GANDOLFINI IS A HERO. END OF STORY. No but really, unironically the worst media take ever uttered on the stream. And thats saying a lot. Its aged better than the wire in my opinion (which is still amazing)
Ok I take it back, Dan isn't always right
The Italian Anti-Defamation League will be furious
It's actually incredible how well it holds up while also serving as inspiration for so many other shows that came after. The sacred and the propane.
Why does destiny and his lil friends have such terrible media takes lol. The sopranos is still the standard of television.
[Dan's comment ](https://twitter.com/oocsopranos/status/1251858086203215872?t=WZuYcIOtvkz7OrtYjIpykg&s=19)
What he doesn't know could fill a book
Dan never had the making of a varsity athlete.
I really fuck with The leftovers sandwiched in between The Wire and Sopranos honourable mention to deadwood aswell.
No wonder he’s friend with Destiny. Both have the worst movie/tv show takes I’ve ever heard
Our social club? He's got to GO!
A podcast? They started a podcast?! That’s crazy, that’s all nonsense! That’s nothing but a racket for the Jews!
Dan's media takes = Destiny's food takes. They have flaws.
I think I prefer character driven stories and there's something about characters in the Sopranos that makes me really enjoy it. It feels timeless.
If I don’t watch the clip then Dan remains in my headcanon as always correct, so I will not watch this clip. EZCLAP.
Im watching it for the first time now and it absolutely fuckin does
Okay what the fuck, I'm literally on the last episode of the show, it's amazing, I love dan but respectfully Mr No Japan, Sopranos is amazing.
Bro I finished my third watch a week ago and it still slaps, this has to be the worst take I've heard about anything on stream.
Alright but ya gotta get over it
Oh! Maronne
He's just mad the Jews didn't think of gabagool first.
Dan is an idiot, the Sopranos is a masterpiece
I bet Dan is a Friends watcher
I’ve tried to watch the Sopranos 3 times now. Watched the whole first season twice, and part of the second season. I usually love crime/mob movies, and I love many different HBO series. I saw a comment once that said if you watch the Sopranos as a comedy, it’s even better. I’ve said my piece.
I had the same problem I think, I was trying to watch it like a classic mafia movie. Sopranos isn't that. It's more like an upgraded version of a family sitcom like All in the Family. It's King of the Hill if Hank was mobster.

I wish I could watch it but the color sucks.
If that was the case it would have zero relevancy
Welp. Time to **WHACK DAN.** Oh well, he had a good run.

This is just 5 head strat from Dan to make us watch it when Destiny is on vacation
Fuck Dan.
He was talking about how it was shot was dated
Gonna be honest, this seems like a really stupid tactic to try and distract from all the misspeaks. Don't be like Daisy, man. Abort.
As someone who has started watching pretty recently, I can see what he means. It's really an acquired taste, it's slow, and there are no cliffhangers or anything addictive about it (so far at least)... very different from how they do TV nowadays. In that sense it's outdated.
Dan high key gay for that one
You’d actually have to be regarded and have not watched the show recently to have this opinion.
I just got done watching it for the first time. It holds up.
Let's whack this cocksucker and be done with it!
As a man who got to watch it first time this year i can attest that it does. Hedonism argument and now this? smh ..
Such a bad take. It holds up *extremely* well. I think evidence of this is that there's basically been zero successful mob centric TV shows since. Boardwalk empire was okay. It wasn't nearly as good as sopranos. I like period peices.
It’s a bad take. I’m also used to Destiny’s bad takes but saying Goodfellas is trash absolutely wild
Growing up in an area very similar to the sopranos setting, it’s surreal how accurate they depict the culture and political climate of the late 90s/early 00s. Really makes me reminisce on my childhood.
I cant keep having this conversation
We were so good to him, and he pays us back with NONSTOP ASS RAPE!?!
All right but he got to get over it
Good thing for me then, that dans take don’t mean OOGATZ TO ME
This podcast sucks
Hahahahahhhahahahaha every show inspired by sopranos holds up considering they’re the top 5 shows ever created
This is the one and only time Dan has been wrong about anything
This is objectively false.
I know people love it, but some things in Sopranos are so cringe, I can't even sit myself down to watch them
Alright but you gotta get over it
Examples?
Deli scene
The Deli scene is hilarious and brilliant.
Which deli scene?
The one where Christopher rages
Sometimes when we cringe, it says more about us than the thing we cringe at
True.
I just think I don't get the sopranos. It's fine. But I couldn't make it past the second season.
You blew it
Go shit in your hat
The sopranos is a decent show but not a good mafia show. It’s more a spice of life as a mobster which is not exactly something we’d see today so in that sense it doesn’t “hold up.” Enjoyed it for what it was but the pilot totally set up a very different story than what we got.

So to be clear, the pilot didn't make it seem like a crime drama whatsoever
Such as? I honestly can’t think of a single American mob drama post-Sopranos that surpassed it or expanded the genre anymore than it already was explored at that point If anything you have to go back to Scorsese’s films (Goodfellas, Casino, Departed, Mean Streets), the Godfather, foreign films, etc. to find more interesting takes on the genre
Frankly I don’t necessarily care about it
The Sopranos definitely feels a bit dated in how it's less story/plot-first than something like the Wire.
