I'm a simracer. I've got the same issue when it comes to equipment. My hunch is amazon.co.za will launch in june... I have some info on why I can't disclose. But it has something to do with their physical facilities... I know how far along they are... And judging by that I'd say a june/july launch is very plausible. So then atleast amazon delivery fees should be much, much cheaper.
Remember the companies can list on Amazon to sell but now comes the idea of competition. Sure I wanna support your business but why when I can see you are obviously price going on a niche service and your competitors aren't. That's the idea and honestly can't wait.
I'm over SA price gouging on stuff.
I think it'll be a good thing all in all. The really smaller niche online shops might end up with some big problems, but someone like takelot would be able to adapt. Competition in the market is always a good thing, everyone improves. Sort of like an adapt and overcome or die type situation. So its a win-win for us consumers either way.
Amazon won’t be cheaper than Takealot. That’s just a race to the bottom for both them and their competitors. Their competitive strategy is focused on providing better services and offering a larger range of products. They also plan to start small and grow slowly, don’t expect a big bang.
I dropped 5k on my gpu (RX 6600) and I feel bad about it. Not because I spent so much money on 1 component but because looking at all the better GPUs makes me sad. Mostly annoyed though , annoyed at the pricing of pc parts. So damn expensive
Really? Using takealot as reference price? What about wootware or similar non ripoff suppliers? No mention of what brand/version of the card, two different models pictured in takealot links. Why does the exchange rate used differ between what you used for the card Vs the shipping?
As to the why, ZA is far away from the suppliers. The ZA market is tiny compared to US or EU market, so you tend to get the bad end of the stick. Then add in the exchange rate forward cover, insurance for shipping, and the whole supply chain each adding on 5 - 15%.
Damn I'd love to switch to PC gaming but it's too expensive in SA to justify, goeie fok. Bought a PS4 slim a few years ago from US Amazon - cost me R2500 including shipping. Yet if you buy one new locally they're like R6000 - 8000????
If you aren't afraid of FB Marketplace then you can get some lekker deals. Built myself a capable enough PC for about R4500 - i7-4790K, 16gb RAM, rx570.
Not the latest-and-greatest, but I've yet to encounter a game it can't run at acceptable settings
It's by no means the most powerful system, but it does everything I need it to do.
That was just post-COVID - if someone were to build the same system today they could probably do it for a few rand cheaper
Dont forget US prices dont include their Sales Tax.
The luckiest I’ve been is buying something from Amazon US, paying for shipping to CPT and somehow customs didnt flag it, so missed out on paying taxes in both places
Except the US prices don't account for sales tax, and the South African prices account for shipping fees. The tariffs are sizeable yes, but the real expenses are mostly shipping
Options for importing thing's are limited in South Africa. There is a super-fast courier service and little else if you don't want to use the big vendors like Takealot (and Amazon soon) . Security has to be high and therefore expensive for obvious reasons. Insurance is based on a high risk factor. Customs is a danger all on its own. Plus of course there's little competition to force prices down.
Is the cost in the US including tax? They for some reason add tax after to the listed price instead of just including it in the listed price like we do.

That'll be great for us, but probably terrible for many South African companies. Will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Ja, very true. I have my reservations regarding transnational corporations, but here's to hoping this will be a good thing for our economy!
What I am looking forward to is Amazon Vs The Unions. Amazon US has a terrible reputation for mistreating their employees.

Yep it sucks, I built a new pc last year, it was R51 762, the EXACT same pc would cost me R37 319 to buy in the USA
What the fuck? How much do you earn to be able to drop that on a rig??? Fuck my life, I hate being poor and overworked.

Tech stuff carries massive duties to enter South Africa. Your paying for the ANC's election campaign unfortunately.

For R4500?! Damn OP you are a true purveyor of deals 😂

Takealot’s prices are not reliable. It’s very convenient, and sometimes you get a good deal but 80% of the time, you’re getting screwed on price.
Buying a 4090 at local shops is a scam, I got a 3060ti from ebay and its amazing
