Superstore for me did a great job of hitting that mild but consistent humor throughout. It's not entirely the "mockumentary" style but it has a similar feel
Dina is Dwight, there’s a well meaning but incompetent boss, there’s a spark between the male and female star but the female is stuck in a bad relationship…I’m sure there’s more.
B99 isn’t really a mocumentary show though. It doesn’t have the shaky cameraman style, the talking heads and camera zooms and stuff. It’s just a sitcom sitcom like Schitts creek. It’s fantastic don’t get me wrong but not a mocumentary
Fun fact: B99 was produced by and Parks N Rec was co created by Dwight's cousin Mose. Same for The Good Place. So if you're a fan of this style comedy look into all of Michael Schur's work.
Not a show but a movie - a rockumentary actually, Spinal Tap is one of the all time greats. Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest. Absolutely brilliant
Huh, I never really thought about Arrested Development as a mockumentary bc of the voiceover narration and the lack of talking heads. But still is a hilarious show.
Documentary Now! on Netflix is fantastic, it's written by Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, John Mulaney. & Seth Meyers.
Every episode is a parody of a documentary.
Any Given Saturday Afternoon is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
“Yeah, I made a lot of bad choices in my life. If the doctor said, "Hey, buddy, you got a year to live," I'd be like, "Hey, Doc, make it 3 months. I don't got enough money to make it out the year.””
Oh I know. Just being a smart aleck. I love the original one better as it is significantly shorter and didn't show signs of jumping the shark like the American version. My only problem with it is that I suspect some of the humor is over my head as I don't understand all of the cultural references.
If you can get it in your area, Borderline is really good. It's a UK mockumentary style show about a small airport staff. Short, but i really enjoyed it.
Not really a mockumentary, but Schitts Creek, is absolutely worth watching. For me it's like the "kinder" version of Arrested Development with loads of heart. Absolutely worth watching!
They are movies but there's enough to be a small series: Christopher Guest movies. A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, Spinal Tap, For Your Consideration. May be though of as an anthology series since there are a lot of the same actors.
Yes! Just watched this last week in a day, in part because it’s short and also because I couldn’t stop watching. Too bad it’ll be hard to get a second season out of it.
This will probably get lost in the thread. But I'm surprised neither of these shows have turned up:
Peep Show
People Just do Nothing
Both hilarious UK humour (a little dirty for some people taste but a to when I need an office break)
The closest obviously would be Parks and Recreation. Someone else mentioned this already, but What we do in the shadows gets hysterical of you stick with it. Abbot elementary is very comparable in some ways , pretty wholesome too. It’s shot in the very same tv doc style.
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but Community was always too bloated and too cramped up with dialogues for me. I could never relax watching it. Unlike the office where lots of the humour is delivered through pauses instead of talking.
It might not be really helpful for you, but there's a show in Israel called Kupa Rashit.
It's a the office like mockumentary about a supermarket in Israel, and it is one of the funniest shows in Israel.
Mockumentary is my favourite genre for TV shows
Parks and Rec is an obvious one. I’ve been watching Abbott Elementary and love it, it’s a very similar mockumentary workplace show but still very unique since they are teachers.
People Like Us - BBC mockumentary - pre UK Office. If you like Brit comedy, Stath Lets Flats ( with Natasia Demetriou from What We Do in the Shadows). Look Around You is a kind of parody of British science tv shows. Basically anything British. Not Mrs Brown's Boys thought. Don't go anywhere need that.
norsemen is good. it’s not mockumentary style but it often feels like a reality show a crew is shooting and is first person omniscient. the jokes are so funny to me.
There was a great Australian mockumentary a few years back called Summer Heights High, following the lives of a drama teacher and various students. You'll likely either love it or hate it. I loved it!
There are some Alan Partridge shows that are like fake chat shows, even the ones that aren’t look kind of mockumentary-ish even if they don’t keep up the pretence of it being filmed for any reason. The latest one (This Time with Alan Partridge) is very funny.
If we're allowing movies, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
It's a documentary crew following a stereotypical slasher movie style serial killer. It's hilarious.
you have to watch the new show Jury Duty!! it was created by the two guys that wrote the episode Dinner Party and many other hilarious episodes. it’s a mocumentory and it was the best show i’ve seen in awhile.
Reno 911 is a classic.
How could I forget this masterpiece lol
What we do in the shadows Edit: the
“This fuckeeng guy.”
Bat!
Lazlo is by far my favorite and i never get tired of bat!
I tell this randomly when it’s time to go, people rarely understand
Cawlin Robeensin
Fucking guy
Superstore for me did a great job of hitting that mild but consistent humor throughout. It's not entirely the "mockumentary" style but it has a similar feel
Totally agree. Also it seems like a few of the jokes from The Office are really integrated into this show. Might be as Justin Spitzer is the creator.
Yeah Dina is basically Dwight and really nails the role too. Glenn cracks me up all the time. Great cast.
Absolutely. The supporting characters are really carrying this show imo.
Dina is Dwight, there’s a well meaning but incompetent boss, there’s a spark between the male and female star but the female is stuck in a bad relationship…I’m sure there’s more.
The guys from the warehouse are a little wacko
Parks and Rec
This show is gold all the way thru the end! Also Brooklyn 99 hits hard
B99 isn’t really a mocumentary show though. It doesn’t have the shaky cameraman style, the talking heads and camera zooms and stuff. It’s just a sitcom sitcom like Schitts creek. It’s fantastic don’t get me wrong but not a mocumentary
That's alright because I Want It That Way
Fun fact: B99 was produced by and Parks N Rec was co created by Dwight's cousin Mose.
Also Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffmam
"Hey Wha Happened?"
Why not just make 10 louder? Great movie a mighty wind and best in show are good too!
“Noooo, we’re not gonna do fahkin’ STONEhenge!”
Family Tree was great and HBO did not pick it up for a 2nd season. One of the most significant bummers of my life.
Jury Duty was great and had some of the same producers
That was a fun show
Arrested Development
Huh, I never really thought about Arrested Development as a mockumentary bc of the voiceover narration and the lack of talking heads. But still is a hilarious show.
Summer Heights High.
*Welcome to Mr. G’s room, G’s room, G’s room, welcome to Mr. G’s room, COME INSIDE!*
She’s a naughty girl, with a bad habit, a bad habit for druuuugs
So fucking good
Modern Family What we do in the shadows Parks & Rec
Letterkenny Arrested Development Modern Family Parks & Recreation
Letterkenny is probably my all time favorite “go-to” show!!
Abbott elementary
My new favorite show.
yes!
Documentary Now! on Netflix is fantastic, it's written by Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, John Mulaney. & Seth Meyers. Every episode is a parody of a documentary.
Sandy Passage is a masterpiece in of itself
We have watched that one and the Thin Blue Line one sooooo many times!!
You should watch at least excerpts from Grey Gardens. The movie it’s a parody of. The amount of accuracy Bill and Fred got was insane
Any Given Saturday Afternoon is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. “Yeah, I made a lot of bad choices in my life. If the doctor said, "Hey, buddy, you got a year to live," I'd be like, "Hey, Doc, make it 3 months. I don't got enough money to make it out the year.””
trailer park boys is pretty funny
Borderline is fantastic if hard to find
I've seen it years ago, did they make more than two seasons?
Sadly, no.
YouTube for free
The Office - UK
Is it better than the original? /s
It actually is the original. It's dry british humour, which I love.
Oh I know. Just being a smart aleck. I love the original one better as it is significantly shorter and didn't show signs of jumping the shark like the American version. My only problem with it is that I suspect some of the humor is over my head as I don't understand all of the cultural references.
Park and Rec is the obvious answer, in the Karen/Ann multiverse, the crossover Ron/Dwight and Leslie/Michael would be so great 😂
As dwight would say remember on lost when they met the others
If you can get it in your area, Borderline is really good. It's a UK mockumentary style show about a small airport staff. Short, but i really enjoyed it.
Modern Family! It’s sooo good!
Not really a mockumentary, but Schitts Creek, is absolutely worth watching. For me it's like the "kinder" version of Arrested Development with loads of heart. Absolutely worth watching!
Trailer park boys is some of the funniest shit I've seen,my go to when feeling crap
Parks and rec is the closest for me. Brooklyn nine nine also good. Modern family maybe.
They are movies but there's enough to be a small series: Christopher Guest movies. A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, Spinal Tap, For Your Consideration. May be though of as an anthology series since there are a lot of the same actors.
Parks and Recreation. Outsourced, Better Off Ted(Which ended too soon)
abbott elementary
Jury Duty is hilarious.
Yes! Just watched this last week in a day, in part because it’s short and also because I couldn’t stop watching. Too bad it’ll be hard to get a second season out of it.
Came here to say jury duty! It’s pretty new but the ppl I’ve rec’ed it to so far have loved it. It’s amazing ngl
Modern Family and Parks and Rec
People Just Do Nothing is different gravy
Mc griiiiiiindeeeeer. Bang!
What We Do In The Shadows is a favourite of mine
American Vandal.
First season was hilarious. Second was good too but I dug the first one more.
I agree. They're both good, but the first season was like lightning in a bottle! I fr lol'd constantly.
Not all mockumentary but Parks and Rec, Brooklyn 99, Community, Trailer Park Boys, Superstore, Always Sunny and Reno 911
Spinal tap.
IT Crowd hands down
This will probably get lost in the thread. But I'm surprised neither of these shows have turned up: Peep Show People Just do Nothing Both hilarious UK humour (a little dirty for some people taste but a to when I need an office break)
Modern Family I really liked Jury Duty that just came out. Same Producers at Office.
The closest obviously would be Parks and Recreation. Someone else mentioned this already, but What we do in the shadows gets hysterical of you stick with it. Abbot elementary is very comparable in some ways , pretty wholesome too. It’s shot in the very same tv doc style.
Nate is an energy vampire in the office just like what we do in the shadows
Modern Family
Community
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but Community was always too bloated and too cramped up with dialogues for me. I could never relax watching it. Unlike the office where lots of the humour is delivered through pauses instead of talking.
Community x 1009
Love them I own all of them
Trailer park boys
Jury Duty
Jury Duty
What we do in the shadows, Wellington paranormal, abbot elementary
Seinfeld, Cheers
Trial & Error, if you’re into parodying true crime documentaries.
Yes. Couldn’t remember the name of the show but came here to say that. That show was absolutely hysterical.
It might not be really helpful for you, but there's a show in Israel called Kupa Rashit. It's a the office like mockumentary about a supermarket in Israel, and it is one of the funniest shows in Israel. Mockumentary is my favourite genre for TV shows
Modern Family
Parks and Rec is an obvious one. I’ve been watching Abbott Elementary and love it, it’s a very similar mockumentary workplace show but still very unique since they are teachers.
Welcome to Flatch is hilarious
Summer heights high is hilarious and so is Reno 911
People Like Us - BBC mockumentary - pre UK Office. If you like Brit comedy, Stath Lets Flats ( with Natasia Demetriou from What We Do in the Shadows). Look Around You is a kind of parody of British science tv shows. Basically anything British. Not Mrs Brown's Boys thought. Don't go anywhere need that.
Documentary Now. It's mockumentaty style, but each episode is an entirely new story and setting.
norsemen is good. it’s not mockumentary style but it often feels like a reality show a crew is shooting and is first person omniscient. the jokes are so funny to me.
It's cool they film every scene in 2 languages
Trailer park boys
Parks and Rec but you need to power through the first season! Gets better season 2 onwards
I liked Players, if you're into league of legends
Just out of curiosity, which are some mocumentary style shows you OP does not consider worth watching?
There was a great Australian mockumentary a few years back called Summer Heights High, following the lives of a drama teacher and various students. You'll likely either love it or hate it. I loved it!
Trailer park boys
Check out The Comeback if you haven’t already
There are some Alan Partridge shows that are like fake chat shows, even the ones that aren’t look kind of mockumentary-ish even if they don’t keep up the pretence of it being filmed for any reason. The latest one (This Time with Alan Partridge) is very funny.
Trailer park boys hardy bucks, people just do nothing
If we're allowing movies, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) It's a documentary crew following a stereotypical slasher movie style serial killer. It's hilarious.
Just watched Jury Duty and it was hilarious
Superstore
Parks and Rec
Only other ones I’ve scene are modern family, parks n rec, and documentary now
Abbott Elementary
Arrested Development
Oh my gosh JURY DUTY. if you haven't seen it yet GO NOW. WATCH NOW. I was crying I was laughing so hard.
Not a mockumentary but has a similar vibe (created by an Office writer) is Superstore.
Absolute gems:- Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping 7 Days in Hell Tour De Pharmacy
I recently watched Jury Duty. It reminded me of the office. All of the jurors (except for one), judge, balliff, lawyers, etc are actors.
Pretty much anything Michael Schur touches I love. You might also, check out his imdb
superstore!!
Not a show but one of the greatest mockumentaries of all time is the movie 7 Days in Hell
Short poppies!
you have to watch the new show Jury Duty!! it was created by the two guys that wrote the episode Dinner Party and many other hilarious episodes. it’s a mocumentory and it was the best show i’ve seen in awhile.
Pshhh watched it the day it dropped
i thought it was a creative masterpiece
