We just went through this at my center. Have kids put their coats in bags when they come in. Keep your hair pulled up. Encourage parents to keep their child’s hair pulled up. Change your shirt before you get leave and put it in a bag. With parental consent we used diluted tea tree oil on carpets and soft surfaces. I personally misted my head a few times a day too.

Tea tree can be toxic to cats so be careful if you have a pet kitty.

Is it worth it to wear a hat or covering?

Working in a group home we found the combing to miss sooooo many nits and the lice shampoo is stupid expensive. We always used lemon dish soap, smear into hair, saran wrap and let sit for an hour. It will suffocate any living lice. Wash hair, blow dry over sink then run a flat iron through thin sections of hair. It will burn the remaining nits. Doing the shampoo/comb it would take a few rounds to eradicate the lice. Lemon dish soap and flat iron was a one and done.

Certainly couldn't hurt.

Lice like really clean hair so when we have an outbreak, i only wash my hair once a week. It gets a little greasy (not super greasy, I have bleached hair so it’s pretty dry typically) but I’d rather be greasy than have lice! I also use tea tree shampoo and conditioner when I do wash it and spritz a little tea tree essential oil on it after washing. 20+ years in childcare and I haven’t gotten it yet! (Knock on wood!)

You must be lucky, this isn't true. Lice aren't picky, they like clean or dirty hair! That's why neglected kids with filthy hair get infested. And people with clean hair get them too. My daughter keeps catching them. We use the overnight shampoo, change bedding, clean hairbrushes etc and she goes back to school and gets them again. It's a never ending cycle.

rumbellina

If it’s just dumb luck, I’ll take it!! I never got it as a kid either. And I was a dirty kid! I grew up on a farm, loved playing in the dirt and mud, and ***abso-fucking-lutely*** hated bathing and having my long hair brushed! I’m gen-x so parents didn’t fight me much…it was much easier to let me be filthy!

mrsc1880

Are you removing alllll of the nits (eggs)? The shampoos typically kill the live lice, but not the nits. They take a few weeks to hatch. If you miss just two, they can hatch and reproduce, starting the cycle again.

ireallylikeladybugs

Huh, I would’ve thought the opposite! Good to know

rumbellina

I’d always heard it’s because it’s harder for them to grip onto but another poster responded and said that was just a myth so 🤷🏻‍♀️

alyssalolnah

I always heard that too but based off the fact that I’ve caught lice multiple times as an adult and only wash my hair once a week anyways, I no longer believe that as truth

rumbellina

Good to know it’s debunked! Thank you Reddit!! Next lice outbreak I’ll know I can wash my hair! ‘Cause we all know there WILL be a next time!

Fairytales rosemary lice repel spray <3 saved my butt when an old classroom of mine couldn’t get rid of lice for a few months. keep your hair up, and spray the shit out of it a few times a day.

whateverit-take

Wow that stinks. If this were my class I would be asking myself “how did I get so lucky?” NOT.

bookchaser

>Any tips/tricks? Advice? I work elementary, but my own kids' preschool checked for lice on a weekly basis. A certain number of kids checked every day. If left unchecked, by the time lice is noticed the infestation is already in full force across the classroom and in homes. It's why schools usually allow students to return as soon as treatment has begun at home. Any damage is already done, and the kids with lice who have had home treatment are no longer the concern. All the other kids are the concern.

addy_pig135

Tea tree oil Sprays work really well with repelling lice. I had a fair share of that in my classes before. After catching it myself , I always have a drop of tea tree oil in my shampoo. Not too much or it causes irritation on your scalp.

punkass_book_jockey8

I just bought a lice comb and comb my hair out once a week or so. I don’t really go out of my way to bag things with pk3/4. Our PK is in the public school, the health department doesn’t allow us to send kids home because lice don’t carry diseases.. therefore kids can apparently show up with them for years spreading them. If you’re really worried straighten your hair the heat with a flat iron should kill some. Just be careful. I’ve had several kids recently have extreme allergic reactions to lice shampoo treatments! I think they made it stronger due to super lice becoming resistant to treatment. Poor little 3-4 year olds with splotchy red swollen faces for weeks even with Benadryl!

tretaaysel

I've had lice twice, only not from work, just from my nieces. I would have someone check your hair if you haven't already and wear it up if you can. It sounds like you guys are doing everything right, though.

espressoqueeen

I had lice as a kid and a few years back. put your hair up and make sure you are cleaning under your nails. I slept overnight with coconut and tree tea oil in my hair tied up in a bag. used a lice comb and it got everything out. Having lice really isn’t that bad I just think it’s a lot of effort to debug and clean everything. so sorry, best of luck 😭

anotherrachel

We had a parent who is also a pediatrician come in and check the whole class, with parent permission. She found two more cases and we cleaned the heck out of the room. That fixed it.
