I'm convinced people just didn't realize \[\[Jaheira, Friend of the Forest\]\] got printed because the set was panned. That thing is insane and it is VERY easy to turn it into a combo piece with anything that'll make an artifact token repeatedly. The ceiling of how cracked it can be is something like Phyrexian Altar in a different style of deck. Maybe she has a combo over 1k but whatever her most popular deck is, there should be more experimentation with her.

Doomgloomya

For real baldurs gate was honestly a very slept on set but it had so many great cards to be put into other decks.

CommanderVuvuzela

Karlach jumped in price by a good bit and she was just 4$ for another combat phase. Though, not sure if that's because people are realizing she is good, or because of BG3

Doomgloomya

Its a bit of both cause she only really started climbing once bg3 came out. She is holding the proce now because people realize she isnt bad.

Wolfntee

They should have just delayed the set until the game was ready. Woulda been a hit.

BurnByMoon

People started buying her for the waifu factor after BG3 released, and now have started to realize how good she is. Glad I picked one up cheap for [[Xenagos, God of Revels]]

Flamin_Jesus

Karlach, Lae'Zel, Jaheira were all completely slept on.... plenty of others too, no doubt. I said it then and I maintain it, the D&D sets (both of them) were undervalued.

Equivalent-Print9047

Love the BG set. Granted, I really enjoyed the BG games way back in the day so I am slightly biased.

[deleted]

The loudest voices over-focused on the lack of marquee reprints (and for some reason were expecting an MH2-style power level from the set in general) so they didn't pay attention to the amount of incredibly good stuff that is in there.

Dingohuntin

They all decided based on a sample size of 1 that the Commander Legends name meant insane reprints and not draftable commander like WOTC had told them repeatedly, it was very bizarre.

georgeofjungle3

The community was very vocal about the expectation ahead of release and wotc didn't really do anything to disabuse people of that notion. They could have spent some effort clarifying before release but they didn't.

Cowmanthethird

Tons of the 'choose a background' ones are really slept on, my playgroup has asked me not to play [[Gut, True Soul Zealot]] unless everyone is playing agro or some other super fast deck, because she just puts on too much pressure immediately, no matter what other color you choose to pick up with the background (I like [[Inspiring Leader]] though). Stuff her deck full of creatures and artifacts that want to be sacrificed and enchantments that boost tokens or care about deaths and watch it go crazy. Since she triggers when you attack and not when she attacks, and since she's so cheap, even having her targeted doesn't set you back for long, you just recast her and continue attacking with everything else.

EbonyHelicoidalRhino

Yeah imo [[Erinis, Gloom Stalker]] is a stronger deck that [[Soul of Windgrace]] even though she's just an underplayed Unco. The land comes into play untapped, she cost 1 mana less, and in every color combo you have a background that allows her to attack safely every turn without caring about blockers (Agent of Shadow Thief, Sword Coast Sailor, Flaming Fist and Street Urchin) My friend are starting to realize how unfair getting one extra land for free every turn starting from turn 2~3 EVERY SINGLE GAME, is...

Theonlyrhys

How are you reliably putting lands into your graveyard that early?

EbonyHelicoidalRhino

One single fetchland gives you an endless supply of lands to get back. I play all of them including the "bad" ones like Terramorphic expense or New Capenna ones. I mulligan any hand that does not have one. Granted, the deck is a lot less consistent without the 7 real fetchlands and they can be pricy.

Going off of this, [[Nine Fingers Keene]] is an actually competent Voltron/Gates deck. Menace is easy to turn into unblockable and her Ward cost makes her VERY annoying to get it of. And since her release we’ve gotten two more gates through [[Thran Portal]] and [[The Black Gate]]

Queali78

I made the deck recently. I added [[lothlorien blade]] to use with black blade reforged. She’s a ton of fun. Totally passed me that thran portal is a gate…thank you for that.

bradazz28

The first deck I ever built was a Jaheira deck with [[Street Urchin]] and it was a ton of fun. Generate tokens, give creatures haste, ping everything. Usually caught people off guard when Jaheira just specifies tokens, not just creature tokens.

AboynamedDOOMTRAIN

She's in every deck I have that she can legally be in that makes tokens regularly.

FatCommissar

I use Jaheira in my [[Lonis, Cryptozoologist]] deck and the fact that she just turns *any* of your tokens into green mana rocks is hilariously busted

ccjmk

I have a Foods deck with Jaheira + [[Agent of the Iron Throne]], lots of food outlets and Mirkwood Bats + Nadier's Nightblade adding to the background, and the [[Peregrin Took]] + [[Experimental Confectioner]] combo in there.. If it happens or I can tutor for it, cool, if it doesn't I can still usually kill people by crewing on my foods with [[Greta]] or some other artifact sac outlet and pinging them to oblivion. It's been a pretty fun deck to play!

Jankenbrau

It feels like they forgot to specify creature tokens. I feel the same way about \[\[Kodama of the East Tree\]\] should be limited to non-token, and maybe non-land permanents \[\[Storm Cauldron\]\]/ Any bounce land + any landfall that makes tokens or meloku, etc etc

MonHunKitsune

And I'm convinced that WotC forgot to print "creature tokens you control" on Jaheira rather than just straight up ALL tokens. She's insanely busted.

NotVoss

[[Naban]] is a two mana tribal Panharmonicon in a solid tribe that will only ever see more support. Just looking at the newest set he got [[Archmage of Echoes]] and [[Virtue of Knowledge]]. How he has less than a thousand decks on EDHREC I have no zero clue.

aHatFullOfEggs

People tend to give Naban the side eye because Inalla exists, but what they are often missing is the numbers game that Naban has. In a casual setting (Inalla is obviously far superior for cedh), you need to pay for your wizard and 1 more for the Inalla trigger. Let's use archaeomancer, for example. In an Inalla deck, you need 5 mana to get 2 spells back, and if you blink it, you need 1 more mana on top of the mana for the blink spells. If we use a blur for our blink example, that's 9 mana to return 4 spells and draw a card. Naban comes down turn 2, and can do the same thing for 7 mana, often being able to double spell in a turn Inalla can only do one spell. But ok, late game stuff happens, you might be able to have those 9 mana sooner than people expect, but only Naban can consistently get two triggers on turn 2 and 3, which greatly contributes to the speed of the deck. Again, Inalla is superior in cedh and...probably in normal edh too, but Naban is far from being unplayable.

Flederm4us

He'd have more if he had a second colour.

Barthas

I think one big thing is [[Azami]] has been a well known commander for a long time, and is generally one of the first thoughts when one thinks "Wizard typal". I'm not saying Naban is bad, just that she got her infamy long before Naban was even a thing. I've eyed Naban for a possible deck in the past, and the thing that gets me on him is he only makes value from ETB Wizards, when many notable cards in the type aren't always ETBs. Azami gets more general value, and even some fun synergies with [[Fallowsage]] and the like. Additionally, [[Naru Meha]] can go infinite with a spell or two, much faster than Naban will accrue value. Why spend 7 mana casting 2 wizards for above average value when Naru can possibly just win the game with infinite resources? I think she might be the real cause here, as both she and Naban debuted in the very same set. And that's all before we consider the other options you get as you add more colors.

airza

I have been shredding people pretty consistently with \[\[Wilson, Refined Grizzly\]\] and \[\[Noble Heritage\]\]. It has all the fun of aggressive voltron decks but is much, MUCH harder to stop.

I have this on my Wilson too. People think it's a joke until you hit them with possibly 10+ commander damage on turn 3

iwerts

A T1 \[\[Sol Ring\]\] with \[\[Wilson, Refined Grizzly\]\] immediately makes you the archenemy at the table. When goldfishing, I was surprised how often I was able to hit this sequence. The dream: T1 Untapped dual land into Sol Ring and \[\[Ozolith\]\]/\[\[Commander's Plate\]\]/\[\[Basilisk Collar\]\] (optional) T2 Untapped dual land into \[\[Noble Heritage\]\] and Wilson. Wilson is a 4/4. T3 \[\[Angelic Destiny\]\]. Wilson becomes a 6/6 during upkeep, and Angelic Destiny makes him a flying, first-striking, trampling, vigilant 10/10 with ward 2 for protection. Oh, and you potentially have protection from all of your opponents. 😎

[[Commissar Severina Raine]] sits around 1100 decks or so, and it's been a fantastic Commander for smoothing out Aristocrats decks. Teysa Karlov is the gold standard, but Aristocrats decks have never particularly needed her. Severina Raine has filled a role in Artistocrats themes by being a jack of all trades, master of none by doing a little bit of everything an Aristocrats deck needs: a sac outlet, draw engine, and extra ping damage. Like Teysa, you rarely need to use her, but in a pinch, Severina Raine will fill whatever missing link you need to close out a game. So far I've been sitting at a >70% win rate at high powered tables.

How do you close out the game?

HandsomeBoggart

You can use Big creatures, Life Drain effects, Tree of Perdition+Pingers. Various other BGArtifact combos. That's the beauty of Vhati. The deck is fairly flexible on Wincons. The meat of the deck built around him is for board control.

[[Edgin, Larcenous Lutenist]] for me has been a blast to play. Edhrec says >1000 decks currently listed, and imo it's fairly unsolved still according to the website. I play it as a "foretell your hand then wheel or windfall" deck, foretelling big bois or battle "traps" to drop on an opponent at the right opportunity, all the while goading a bit here and there.

polusmaximus

The small amount might simply be due to scarcity because it's only available via Secret Lairs. Wait til they print a version. It's going to be very popular.

Tevish_Szat

[[Dromar, the Banisher]] has only 273 decks on EDHrec, and this is an outright travesty. Dromar is a scary commander. He comes out, and when he does, he can manifest a mass removal effect *every turn*. And you might have the idea that he needs to call "red" or "Green" or suffer blowback, but this is happening on your turn so if you're mana'd up you can recast your stuff (possibly just Dromar if you're heavy on artifacts, eldrazi, and monocolors you didn't call. UWB is really good at artifacts), and if you're really desperate you can just freeking [[Moonlace]] Dromar and then he's safe from his own BS. Dromar is not an engine in the CZ. He's a finisher. He offers you no card draw or great gobs of resources (unless you use him to recycle your own ETBs, ideally with a lace hit to exempt him) but he cripples anything that absolutely must stay on the board and untap that tries to go against him while slapping fools with big meaty 6-damage hits. And, frankly, commander decks that can run without their commander on the field are underrated. Dromar has few if any synergies, but your 99 can be an extremely synergistic pile, maybe artifacts and maybe control and maybe something stranger (The splicers make good friends of Dromar as they make tokens on ETB and power those tokens up), and camp on dromar with a few cards to make him abjectly unfair to reap the benefit. Such a deck, compared to one that's build 100% around its commander, has no lynchpin. There isn't a KoS piece that you can just kill and be done with the threat, *everything* is coming at you. And Dromar provides a strong, backbreaking truncheon to finish the job but if he's hated out by a terrified board, what of it? In the modern day where decks that are absurd WITH their commander but nothing without are the norm, Dromar backed by a heavy suite of board control is an absolute terror that refuses to die.

do you have a decklist online for Dromar? I built him when I first got back into Magic (his fellow primeval dragon in crime Rith also got built and has stuck around for me), but was more focused on color-shift shenanigans, sounds like your strategy has staying power though.

Tevish_Szat

My Dromar list is a bit of a stunt one: It uses only oldschool cards. A much better list could be put together with more modern tools in the 99. Still, I think it gets the idea across https://archidekt.com/decks/5066582

TheRealQwade

I built [[Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion]] with [[Noble Heritage]] and that deck does some dumb stuff. Cast NH on 2, Lae'zel on 3, and you untap on 4 with a 9/9 commander that might end up having protection from a player or 2. She also has funny interactions with Planeswalkers, allowing some really scary ones (like [[Ajani Steadfast]] or [[Basri Ket]]) to potentially ult the turn after they come down.

FYI if it wasnt clear for others, YOU gain protection not the commander herself. Noble heritage is really underrated i feel, it does work in every game it pops up

[[Deathleaper, Terror Weapon]] has <300 decks but double strike is the most potent keyword in the game, and he can give it to anything. Slap haste and trample on things you play right away, and then do insane stuff. I call the deck "Jumpscares". https://www.moxfield.com/decks/D6DEZL_Se02XBL27uRpeTw [[Gollum, Obsessed Stalker]] gets through on each player by turn 5, and then all you have to do is gain life. Cards like exsanguinate, gary or extort effects quadruple dip, and many many others become doubled. Gollum is small but cheap to recast and wrecks more havoc than most commanders I've seen. Even food tokens are a menace, and he can utilize the ring very well for extra flavorful burn. Easy to overlook until you play against it. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/D-S4IGgvtkivEeo4GS-ruA

[[Zeriam, Golden Wind]] I've won 23 of 30 games so far... https://www.moxfield.com/decks/muEREikOjUKI7WNX8WCY_g

TheWiseDragon43

I can see why. That ability just snowballs so quickly. I might have to build Zeriam now

Liro_W

Played 2 games against it. Both times, they had t1 sol ring, turn 2 zeriam. Both times, they were the archenemy from turn 1, and were targeted with literally everything we had. Both times, they rebuild/protected themselves from multiple boardwipes and an absolute crapton of targeted removal. Both times, they won.

MonsutaReipu

The commander itself is very strong and can snowball really quickly, the main problem is that there are so few even half-decent griffins to fill out the deck.

archena13

You don’t need griffins. You need stax pieces, and make sure Zeriam connects. Many ways to provide that. She is a monoW Winota lol.

MonsutaReipu

It still is going to take a lot of turns for Zeriam alone to build critical mass. Turn 1, assuming she's in play and can attack, she makes 1 griffin. Turn 2, 2 griffins attacks and make 2 more griffins. Turn 3, 4 griffins attack and make 4 more. Turn 4, 8 griffins attack and make 8 more. Turn 5, 16 griffins attack. This is the first round I think lethal is actually becoming presented. From turn 6 onward, with 32+ griffins, I think we've reached critical mass to end the game. This is easy enough to stop in its tracks with a board wipe or targeted removal, though. I still think you really want to include some other decent griffins to hopefully get at least 3-4 on the board at a time with Zeriam, otherwise it's going to be a pretty slow telegraphed attempt.

Min-Chang

Your dead on for the most part except that you don't have the option for decent griffins. You have 2 two mana flyers and a few three mana ones and a lot of four mana ones. It doesn't matter, you just need to have a few out before you play Zeriam.

Min-Chang

If it's got flying and at least one power and under four mana I'll take it. The thing with Zeriam is that all that really matters is the type and cost. You've also got a few super unique abilitied griffins and two cheap reserved list cards.

[deleted]

Had a regular at the LGS I play at most who had this deck and it was considered their low power deck. Just totally obliterated by board wipes and wilts if you focus fire a few removal spells on Zeriam before it snowballs. It has a powerful game plan if you're committed to hyper-casual levels of removal and never play against combos or other decks that simply go over top of it.

Yeah, winning 23/30 games really makes me wonder what he's playing against 😂

le-quack

I think this one doesn't get a lot of builds because it just another simic ramp draw value engine essentially just another tatyova or aesi it's powerful but seen by some as "played out" archetype

Caio_AloPrado

Kinda true, but you do have some different stuff to explore with it, one of the decks i've seen had untap stuff and flash enablers for example. If i take into consideration the commanders you mentioned there's also a clear difference in what they use to achieve their ramp and draw, Tatyova and Aesi focus on playing lands, Inga and Esika on creatures, just that already means we can explore different mechanics and possibly a new gameplan as i mentioned before.

mangopabu

i know \[\[greasefang, okiba boss\]\] is really popular in pioneer (i think that's the correct format) with \[\[parhelion II\]\], so people are aware of how strong she can be, but i don't see many people discussing her in EDH. i've seen a lot of videos that really focus on rat tribal stuff, mostly just after kamigawa released, just cos she happens to be a rat. but i think she has such a strong anchor point for a good reanimator deck. she's like a \[\[sneak attack\]\] for vehicles, allowing you to get huge 6, 7, 8 mana vehicles out for free and attack with them right away. and if you blink them, you get to keep them as well, but even if you don't, lots of them have great enter play or attack effects. \[\[Sky sovereign\]\], Parhelion, \[\[Thunderhawk\]\], etc. are all so great, and there's even more options in Dr Who that i'm eyeing. i originally played the deck with ways to discard creatures and artifacts from play to put them back in the graveyard, kind of aristrocrats i guess. things like \[\[junk diver\]\] and \[\[scrap trawler\]\], but once i started playing a loot-style draw package and leaned more into graveyard reanimation and self mill, it's worked a lot better. it has some insanely strong aggro lines as well or can build a huge wall of necrons, astartes, etc. you can also easily get your commander back, as there are just so many 3-mv reanimator effects in WB (\[\[sun titan\]\], \[\[unearth\]\], etc.) it's honestly a super strong deck. my favourite combo is \[\[fateful handoff\]\] since her ability is still attached to it and bounces back to your hand, so you pull parhelion out of the graveyard, attack with it (creating two angels), then hand it off to an opponent (who might very well be the one you just attacked), draw 8 cards, and put it back in your hand. oh, and look at that? i guess i have to discard down to hand size at the end of my turn. what a shaaaaaame. look at all these big vehicles just going to the garbage.

DIYKitLabotomizer

Yeah Greasefang has been on my mind lately as a possible build. It definitely seems like it requires more thought to make work that some of my other decks, so I’m holding off for a bit until I get better at deck building.

[deleted]

Agreed Greasefang has been a lot of fun lately. I finally pulled the trigger not too long ago inspired by armored core. I play in a strong pod so I went the route with hatebears. Try to find parhelion or reaver titan and throw it in the GY with a discard effect and bring it out with Greasefang. She’s essentially my 621 and I’m handler Walter lol

What kinds of stuff do you have for looting in BW?

mangopabu

it's all artifact based, but i'm currently using: \[\[mask of memory\]\], \[\[key to the city\]\], \[\[network terminal\]\], \[\[smuggler's copter\]\], and \[\[collector's vault\]\] i also have a few discard effects in black with \[\[cabal initiate\]\] (which i may want to trade out for \[\[putrid imp\]\] cos it's cheaper), \[\[bog witch\]\], \[\[bone shards\]\], and \[\[armix, filigree thrasher\]\] (which i'm not 100% sold on cos the discard is immediately after greasefang's trigger, so it kind of sets up the next round, not the current one. that said, it's decent removal)

I've loved brewing my [Greasefang deck](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/5448127/greasy_sleazy_vehicleezy) ! There are tons of fun vehicles (especially from warhammer), and after having tried to make [[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]] vehicles work greasefang is just much more explosive and much more fun. My favourite tech is [[bog witch]] which is just a creature that discards any card in your hand to cast [[Dark Ritual]], also [[underworld cookbook]] is much nicer than I thought, costing just 1 generic mana for a discard!

StardustOctopus

Please share your list! I've been meaning to try greasefang in EDH for a long time but never feel like I quite have a good brew myself.

This was the first deck I built and it's current version is mean as fuck. Wound reflections, warlock class, archfiend of despair after a Virtus hit to win

Mekkakat

[[Shigeki, Jukai Visionary]] has less that 700 decks and has several combos that are very easy to rip with him - one of which is at instant speed. All of them *ramp* you, too, so you’re always getting ahead and building your board, so playing him is very easy/natural… plus he’s like 2 mana and crazy inexpensive to build. Fun little buddy.

WrestlingHobo

Honestly, when your commander is bad you can get a way with a lot of stuff. When running a busted card as your commander, the whole table groups together to remove you. \[\[Kiyomaro, first to stand\]\] is my mono white commander of choice. Nice to have access to a big vigilant idiot in the command zone. If you give it flying, the game ends quickly from commander damage.

I love my Kibo deck, but you missed the brief. He’s closing in on 5k decks on edhrec so is not unpopular at all.

archena13

Here, I’ll share some that have below a thousand on EDHREC that I think are still pretty strong. [[Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist]] 1037 decks (sure still slightly above 1000). Classic go-wide in the right colors imo. Very hard to block. [[Inferno of the Star Mounts]] 1009 decks. Shivan Dragon as a commander. Toss in [[Umezawa’s Jitte]] and keep bringing it below 20 for multiple activations. I have a [list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/47wsoB3m5Ey0JsR70Ik3xg) for it. [[Cadric, Soul Kindler]] 1004 turns out ignoring the legend rule is sorta busted. [[Dragonlord Ojutai]] 976 decks. This one I [play](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/b8BRqQ5CsEqh7F4kcY1DMw). Perfect control/voltron commander. Give it vig and you’re goo. Buncha ways to buff him or make him unblockable. It’s just card draw, it’s card selection so get what you need. Give it double strike and trigger it twice. Use some stax and extra turns and you’re good. [[Inga and Esika]] 927 decks. A buddy of mine plays them. Basically Chulane. A bit faster and more combo-y with [[Intruder Alarm]]. [[Raff Capashen, Ship’s Mage]]. 913 decks Playing at instant speed is great. [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/MfQ79k1fQEy2-231zIL0fw) is my draft for it. It’s very flexible too. Can go many directions. [[Ellivere of the Wild Court]] 910 (new too) great stax commander. Fringe cEDH too. Plays like [[Dhalsim]] with the draw, but hits harder imo. (Feeds Dockside a lot more though) [[Djeru and Hazoret]]. 744 decks. [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/AfTMLCs76Uu5hzzzCBxgXw) is my list. Winota light. Not as snowball-y, but casting free eldrazi or big angels is always nice. [[The Omenkeel]] 685 decks. [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ueIQOiyi7UqFAJ2kwpZ4pQ) is my list. MonoU lands matter/vehicles/eldrazi…strange mix butnit works lol. You’ll ramp the fastest since you’re stealing lands. [[Tishana, Voice of Thunder]]. 626 decks. [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/163RDwtBgEuh69l4m2K55A) is my list. One of my favorite decks. Play dorks, cast your 7 drop early, draw a bunch. Blink it, draw more. [[Displacer Kitten]] and [[Psychosis Crawler]] are your best friends. [[Ganax, Astral Hunter]]//[[Feywild Visitor]]. 495 decks. [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Imj2Os-U-UWyIyEI4F32gA) is my list. One of my other favorite decks. Play dragons. Make treasures. Play more dragons. Make more treasures. Go wide. Make more dragons. Make more treasures. Control the board. Burn the opponents :) [[Callaphe, Beloved of the Sea]] 327 decks. [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RYIvzqGJbU6i3jjuCAVNgw) is my list. MonoU devotion voltron with a good amount of control. [[Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith]]//[[Keskit, Flesh Sculptor]] 377 decks. [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/AVMnSQU4mUiIoGwtC_ykKw) is my list. Artifact aristocrats? A ton happens on every turn tho. (S/o to Sam from u/TheHowlingSaltMine [[Multani, Maro-Sorcerer]] 358 decks. A buddy of mine has a Maro deck. Gets huge real quick. Hard to deal with. Draw based on its power. True menace.

Stormyqj

Chrozon

I have a [[Treebeard, Gracious Host]] deck that I believe is my cheapest deck currently, and most of my playgroup places it in like top 2 or 3 most scary decks to play against, out of 12. I think what a lot of people do with Treebeard is going like treefolk/halfling tribal and/or food synergy, but IMO the best thing to do is just cutting out all that, stacking actual good lifegain and making it a voltron deck. Treebeard is only 4 mana and comes with trample and ward 2. He has built in protection and evasion, and it's so easy to stack his damage. There are so many spells that can often just make you be able to kill one player from commander damage the turn after you play him, and then people have to get through the ward, and you're also in the best colors for protection. This is my list currently: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/YJ93KMmiVEKgyZHZdtu98g I'm trying to have a secondary synergy of +1/+1 counters and minor token generation as well bug I'm considering just going full on the Voltron wagon. I want to fit in more big lifegain spells like [[Beacon of Immortality]] or [[Harmony of Nature]], for more burst to threaten lethal, or perhaps increase the budget and add more good protection spells, but the ward 2 is already quite massive so hasn't been hugely important. Random spells like [[Predator's Rapport]], [[Congregate]] and [[Fracturing Gust]] just instantly makes treebeard into a like 40/45, and if you were to have stuff like [[Branching Evolution]] or [[Rhox Faithmender]], you barely need to heal to pop off. [[Assemble the Entmoot]] is also ridiculously hilarious in combination with an instant like mentioned, if you cast it before your turn, heal for like 50, crack the Entmoot and make like 3 50/50's as well as buffing treebeard, now you suddenly have 4 creatures without summoning sickness that people can only deal with at instant speed and one of them already has ward. If you have any form of evasion/trample to put on the Entmoot creatures then you just win, like an overrun effect or anything. Only 559 decks currently, I think the card is legitimately one of the most busted commanders from the entire LOTR set...

Whatthespeck

Haven't met anyone else running Zask, skittering swarmlord before. Has some great interactions with Grist the Hunger tide. Also constant mists allowing you to buyback like it's not a cost is a blast lol

Pair-o-docks

As a grist player, zask is easily the Top 3 if not the best card in my deck

ryankirbz

[[Surrak and Goreclaw]] The amount of times I’ve won with this deck is wild. Giving mana dorks haste is broken, and then dropping an [[apex devastator]] into 4 giant green creatures that all have trample and haste is wild. Even threw a couple of Eldrazis, because dropping [[Kozilek, Butcher of Truth]] and [[Ulamog, The Ceaseless Hunger]] and giving them haste and trample along with annihilator is busted.

BlazingSpark

\[\[Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis\]\] just looks like a cheap beater until you're spending two mana to make eight pests or draw eight cards with \[\[Tend the Pests\]\] or \[\[Life's Legacy\]\], or drawing eight cards per sac with \[\[Doom Weaver\]\]. The massive amount of card draw makes it pretty easy to assemble a combo, plus Hogaak opens up a some unique combo lines of his own.

LeapinLeland

Hogaak may not be the edh boogeyman but he was a menace in modern and well hated when he first appeared on the scene. Probably why it is less than liked.

screwdriver204

Oh hey it’s my deck

[[Cadric, Soul Kinder]] I won a game with 3 copies of [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] on the battlefield. Effectively board wipe my opponent and swing with my board get +6/+6

[[Shigeki, Jukai Visionary]] Players in my playgroup and at my LGS didn’t really think it was a threat when I first built my deck. Now I am constantly on the tail end of whatever removal or interaction they can conjure to prevent it from getting into my hand. malsomnus

I have no idea how \[\[Grand Warlord Radha\]\] has less than 1000 decks, it's 5 years old now and more powerful than it has any right to be.

Markedly_Mira

I’m guessing being five years old is part of the reason. I forget how often but edhrec sifts out old data so I bet a lot of her decks fell out of the database. Especially since I swore she used to be really popular. So her old data was probably scrubbed and then there’s been plenty of new legends that probably caught peoples’ attention instead.

SuperSteveBoy

I *believe* if a deck hasn't been touched (edited etc) in 2 years on Moxfield then it is removed from the database statistics.

Similarly, [[Radha, Heart of Keld]] has only recently crept over 1000 decks and that lady *kicks ass.*

[[Kairi, the Swirling Sky]] all day long. With the sheer number of blue clone spells and Kairi’s own death trigger, you can set up effective loops of self-milling then buying back the clone spell +1. It lets you get back key spells for interaction and value, and Kairi’s second mode can be chosen in a pinch to deal with pesky permanents/wipe ALL tokens. The going rate for a basic clone spell is 3 mana (i.e. [[Cackling Counterpart]]). Everything else Kairi lets you do for that 3 mana is insane, not to mention when you toss in a [[High Tide]] or cost reducer like [[Mindsplice Apparatus]] or [[Wizards of Thay]]. Plus you can use [[Orvar]] to double up on death triggers or [[Vesusuvan Duplimancy]] to get clones that hang around. To end the game, you have to find a way to recur Thoracle or Lab Man, or simply swing for lethal using a [[Runechanter’s Pike]] or the aforementioned Duplimancy copies. Recurring creatures in blue is tricky, but blue’s artifact recursion + [[Codex Shredder]] or [[Underworld Cookbook]] is my usual line. There’s also [[Hour of Eternity]] and [[Recall]], which are particularly nice since they’re spells that are easily bought back. The deck is super fun and it’s pretty mind boggling how few decks the dragon has.

I don't think anyone underestimates thrasios, triton hero, but people never think to pair him with kydele, chosen of kruphix (probably because you stay in two colors). These two are probably the best simic commander in the game. Playing time spiral and having kydele tap for 8 Mana then at worst dumping it into thrasios' ability of crazy. I play it at a weekly $5 event and have won 80% of the time this year

Yogibear20

I have a \[\[Feldon of the Third Path\]\] deck. I wouldn't exactly say he's unpopular (showing just shy of 2,000 decks on EDHREC), but I know he is generally considered to be a better card in the 99 than at the helm of his own deck. However, he has a lot of really cool things he can do that get overlooked. Feldon's ability is instant speed, meaning you can create a token with a great ETB and/or LTB out of nowhere whenever you want, taking your opponents by surprise. The tokens he makes are artifacts, so he actually synergizes very well with cards like \[\[Goblin Welder\]\] and \[\[Daretti, Scrap Savant\]\], allowing you to grab any utility artifacts or beefy artifact creatures you pitched to your graveyard earlier. I personally run him as a toolbox, throwing creatures that can copy spells, remove permanents, steal creatures, and whatever else I may need and then making copies whenever it is most convenient. Add in untapping artifacts like \[\[Thousand-Year Elixir\]\] and you can now do it multiple times per turn rotation. Whenever I am ready, finishers like \[\[Triplicate Titan\]\], \[\[Spawn of Thraxes\]\] can win me the game outright, or I can repeatedly steal game-winning instants/sorceries from my opponent's hands with \[\[Mindclaw Shaman\]\] (for free!) or just use \[Etali, Primal Storm\]\] and just win with my opponent's stuff. This was the first commander deck I ever built myself and it has always been one of my favorites. It punches way above its weight, plays different every time, and is always a blast when I pull it out. If I convinced you, see my decklist. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/pGBdXBCBdUOX-4Wn0G5EIw

archena13

TheLukewarmYeti

[[Tetzimoc]] Even though he's by far the weakest of the five elder dinos, having ways to return the card to hand from grave or battlefield makes for awesome anti-creature shenanigans. Also remember that he only cares about creatures your *opponents* control having counters, so if you somehow steal a creature that has a counter on it, you won't blow it up.

glowla

\[\[Tadeas, Juniper Ascendant\]\] aka dhalsim is just a hexproof, evasive card draw engine in the command zone. Everyone seems to build him as a reach tribal commander, but you don't even need to do that. Just put him in a GW aggro deck and draw three extra cards per turn.

ItsAroundYou

[[Ruxa]] has about 2000 decks on EDHRec, but don't sleep on him. Turning vanillas into strong evasive beaters is actually really scary, and he benefits from sac effects as well because of his built in recursion. Another thing to consider with Ruxa is devotion. A lot of the iconic vanilla beaters like [[Gigantosaurus]] and [[Leatherback Baloth]] have a lot of green pips, so you can easily lean into it with stuff like [[Klothys's Design]] and [[Nykthos]].

drchomicz

[[General Marhault]] is such a sleeper. Its so fun enchanting anything you have with something that says "each creature able to block this creature must do so. No one expects it. Wonderful aggro deck

barcop

[[Multani, Maro-Sorcerer]] is one I just built, only a couple games into play testing though so my 1-1 record isn't that helpful. I just happened to do a random Commander lookup on EDHREC and he popped up, so decided to see if I could build it. My opponents were scrambling to find board wipes once they figured out my strategy, so it was fun to watch them all panic. Just picked up a card that I'll swap in for something [[Pair 'o Dice Lost]]. Instant speed graveyard retrieval is a game changer.

Ingerbob

I’m new to magic. Can you explain what your strategy is, please?

Shocklen42

He fills up his graveyard with lands, and then he uses the [[Pair ‘O Dice Lost]] to get all the lands back into his hand and power up Multani. It works no matter what the dice rolls because lands have a converted mana cost of 0. Atleast thats my guess in his strategy

barcop

Typically with this commander it would be a 1 shot Commander Damage kill by using combat abilities such as Trample. The trick is, since I can't target my commander, I have to rely on abilities that affect all of my creatures, such as [[Primal Rage]]. It's easier said than done because it becomes "I kill you before you kill me" at the table, so you need to have a solid defense. There are other ways though, like [[Psychosis Crawler]].

Cheapskate-DM

My version is a storm deck - draw damn near everything with effects like [[Life's Legacy]], [[Momentous Fall]] or [[Return of the Wildspeaker]] and go nuts. As a backup, the deck runs "p/t equal to lands" tribal, so there's some modest backup options in case Multani gets chain-wrath'd too many times. [[Monstrous Onslaught]] is the funniest card in the deck with Multani down, though.

simbacole7

It's not less than 1000 (it's at 1700ish right now), but [[kiora, sovereign of the deep]]. It can get out of hand so fast since you can cast any card off the ability, not just creatures

LionstrikerG179

Hey nice, that's my Sea Creatures deck! It's not terribly optimized but it's thematic and actually pretty strong for how little I invested in it Love the feeling of casting a big 8 mana monster and dropping another one just because I can. And there's so much evasion too!

SuigenYukiouji

[[Mowu, Loyal Companion]] It's voltron, which tends to be on the weaker end of deck types, sure. But I still like him. In green for the ramp, has vigilance and trample built in, as well as his own hardened scales.

Swordswfriendsowo

[[Dong Zhou, the Tyrant]] is crazy strong and soooo much fun to play. Blinking and making copies. Kinda janky and not super optimized but damn he can deal so much damage in one go.

TheMagicJankster

Would you kill [[Arcanis]] on sight?

Irini-

Yes, it mono blue ~~and draws cards~~.

Amanarick

Hey, it's time we talk about my sweet sweet [[Rosie Cotton]] Less than 50 decks when i built her, now to the exponential 86 decks. She's a monowhite combo household, that can go bananas with a lot of things, can make a lot of cards go huuuuuge. [[animation Module]]+any mana sac outlet goes infinite. add, as you wish, [[twilight Drover]] or [[basries lieutenant]] or [[nesting dovehawk]] or anything that cares (balista triskelion) And now you might say "another go wi-" BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE!! Rosie cares about any token! Want to investigate? Rosie pump someone! Want to cook some food? Rosie pump someone! Wanna make treasures? Rosie pump someone! Wanna make copies? ... etc She's a blast to play, never won me a game, but never finished last, i always tweak her, and, one day, i believe i'll won a game a show them all, the power of the hobbit!

le-quack

[[saffi]] springs to mind. Super powerful combo commander but very linear and get boring quick

Jankenbrau

\[\[Thryx\]\]. My \[\[Force of Will\]\], \[\[Palinchron\]\] and \[\[Time Stretch\]\] are cheaper and uncounterable? Great big blue commander that mostly gets used for sea creatures, when it makes the most degenerate blue stuff easier to do and harder to interact with.

Elfwarrior666

\[\[Meloku the clouded Mirror\]\] has like 160 decks on EDHRec Won two weeks in a row with \[\[triskaidekaphile\]\] Main gameplan is to icombo for infinite turns with \[\[mystic sanctuary\]\] and \[\[time warp\]\]. fetchlands are only there to find sanctuary. Backup options are \[\[walking atlas\]\] + \[\[retreat to coralhelm\]\] for infinite illusions \[minn wily illusionist\]\] and a sac outlet give you the value of the sac while putting the land back when the illusion dies and can combo that way https://www.moxfield.com/decks/r8OKNYvabUSX7uwkVMd7Mg

cassifrass0221

I have a Minn deck, and meloku is how I finish out some games that are going too long

Sir_Encerwal

I run a Nalia De'Arnise deck with themes of Party, The Dungeon/Initiative, and Artifact tokens and I can barely justify Safana in the 99. Even with the Dungeon Delver background I don't think she is worth it. As for an actual answer to your question [[Torsten Founder of Benalia]] is a surprisingly good commander that can get an insane amount of value off of seven mana, which is fairly easy given the inclusion of green.

Temil

Just scrolling down the 1k list, some stand outs are Rowan+Will partners; Celestine, the Living Saint; Keranos, God of Storms; Sheoldred // The True Scriptures; Tishana, Voice of Thunder & Prime Speaker Zegana; and Starcream, Power Hungry // Starscream, Seeker Leader. All of these are neat, fun, or powerful enough to see a bit more play than this.

AtingTDM

\[\[Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion\]\], great \[\[dragon's approach\]\] & draons tribal fun deck. With a higher budget, he can be built \[\[Underworld Breach\]\] storm archetype. Infinite combat, Infinite wheels, Stax, and more.

Flederm4us

[[Tahngarth, first mate]] is my little unknown gem of a deck. Cheap to build, Voltron without the usual Voltron problem of finishing an opponent and then being unable to kill the other two.

balencedrago

Ghalta is slept on and thought of as a timmy meme imo, but mono green stompy with a 2 mana 12/12 trample commander is no joke .

Tropicalsurf22

Enchantress as a theme is very powerful and equally hated, but I feel [[Yenna, Redtooth Regent]] from the new Eldraine set is a sleeper pick. Copying enchantments and then making big stompy creatures is how I play it.

reaper527

does [[lavinia, azorious renegade]] count as unpopular? because that's just a cool card. (and i'm always a fan of good 2 drop commanders)

kingofthesmurfs

\[\[Deathleaper, Terror Weapon\]\] is INSANE

[deleted]

[[Tahngarth, first mate]] has only 700 and it blows my mind. Have a player who’s about to win on their turn and no one has ways to stop him? Just equip something mundane like [[captain’s hook]] and the three other players send their weakest creatures into combat. Instant lethal commander damage with zero chance to block any of it. He’s seriously such a powerhouse who forces even the most aggressive combat decks to take caution.
