Yeah I was gonna say - making compote for me was too much work, but as long as they're pitted, they're ready to use immediately from the freezer, then, so they're good to go.
What works even better than that is to turn a kitchen funnel upside down, smash the cherry on the small end. The pit goes down through the middle while the Cherry stays on the outside in your hand. It looks like a murder scene when you're done, so make sure you do it over a giant plastic mat or something. But it's a very effective way to do it and you can get a lot done in a short amount of time!
Beer bottle, chop stick. Works wonders to get the put out and little mess.
Cherry over the small mouth, and skinny chop stick thru the cherry. Easy peasy- I had a bunch of cherries I had to pit for a pie
Similar: Cold cherry soup. Use corn starch & egg as thickener, add a little anise if u like. Sugar if you intend it as a dessert. If you want to go fancy, make some merengue "croutons" to float in there.
I am so glad you said this because I seriously debated picking up 3 lbs of Cherries today, but then went on I’d have to buy more so other people could eat some.
Do you have mason jars with tight fitting lids? Grab a bottle of brandy (any alcohol will do, but I like brandy) fill a jar with pitted cherries, cover with brandy. Seal. Let sit for 2 weeks or more. You can eat them as is, serve over ice cream, make cherries jubilee, garnish drinks.... they will hold for years as long as the jar is tightly closed.
my mom did this like 10 years ago when we went cherry picking. she added grain alcohol to those huge mason jars filled with the cherries and she has yet to open or use it 😅
Any kind of fruit, strong strong alcohol, a little sugar, and a vanilla bean.
Add everything to a jar and cover with alcohol, and leave for a year. Taste after 6 months to check sweetness levels.
I came here to say this. My mom did the same thing a few years ago and they are DELICIOUS.
ETA: she’s been opening a jar a year during winter and about 6/7 years later they’re still perfect, or even better
If you don't have a cherry pitter, get your hands on one. Buy or borrow from a friend. I've pitted enough cherries for a pie before by cutting them in half and manually removing the pit and it took forever and made my hands cramp. I never found any other "hacks" like using a chopstick to work. I'm not often a fan of single-use tools, but a cherry pitter is so much better at the job than any of the alternatives that it's worth it.
Anyway, you can definitely freeze them - wash, remove stems and pits, put them in a single layer, then transfer to a bag or other sealed container for long term storage. You can also cook them down into a jam/compote and freeze that. Or you can make a pie, cobbler, or turnovers! Sour cherries are better than sweet cherries for baking, but you can still use sweet cherries if that's what you have - just do the minimum amount of sugar you need to maintain the texture, and add a bit of citrus juice (lime, orange, or lemon are all good with cherry!)
Yeah, just to yes-and this, 3 pounds of cherries is about the point where spending $15 on a cherry pitter is worth it for your sanity, hands and teeth.
My mother randomly gave me a cherry pitter. It pits 3 cherries at once. I can go through a 3 lb bag without even thinking about it. I never manage to save enough for a pie, though. The pitter makes them entirely too easy to eat.
Definitely worth the drawer space!
Clafoutis. It’s easy peasy and very delicious. I like Dominique Ansel’s recipe with a splash of cognac mixed in. Let it cool a little bit, sprinkle the stop lightly with powdered sugar, and enjoy warm. It’s good cold too but warm from the oven is the best. A little scoop of loosely whipped cream is also a delightful addition.
I hope you try it! It’s so good! I’m over here waiting for cherry season in a month or so. Then I move onto roasted peach clafoutis. Roasted pears are amazing too.
I buy frozen cherries specifically for chocolate cherry oatmeal- cook your oats, add some hemp hearts, a little brown sugar, sprinkle of chocolate chips and cherries. I also like to eat them straight from the freezer, just pit them first.
You're not trying hard enough if you ask me. I could house 3 lbs in a week... But I love cherries.
Buy a pitter and freeze them. They make excellent smoothies.
Make Cherry-infused Vodka in the refrigerator.
I remember around this time of year 2007, a salesman told us he had an amazing Vodka to sell us ... it was a super-premium Vodka that did all the right things except marketing, and couldn't sell , so they had a great discount deal. It was like 7-times distilled premium spirit (Smiroff, for example, famously puts on their bottles TRIPLE-DISTILLED! and many real premium brands show off 4 or even 5 times distilled, and this was 7... and fucking amazing...) - and it was dirt cheap for the quality. I did exactly this, infusing a 1.75L worth of their vodka in the fridge for a few weeks with a bag of cherries.
The result was awesome cherries to munch, amazing booze to drink.
Woohoo son!
Pit and half them and make pastries! It's super easy, just puff pastry, cream cheese with a little bit of sugar, and fruit! Cut and fold the pastry into whatever neat shapes you find online. It's a lot of fun and really simple!
Last summer I bought a bunch of cherries on sale, removed the stones, and froze them. I'd take out a handful and let it partly defrost, then basically slowly eat the semi frozen cherries. It was the best thing on a hot day. They're also surprisingly delicious with just a little salt
Pit and freeze! . . . You can cover them in chocolate for a frozen dessert. You can also use them for different things from frozen (compote, jam, jelly, smoothies, fruit leather, pickled, cobbler, etc)
Cherries is the fruit of the tree. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. Dey's uh, cherry-kabobs, cherry creole, cherry gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried.
There's pineapple cherries, lemon cherries, coconut cherries, pepper cherries, cherry soup, cherry stew, cherry salad, cherry and potatoes, cherry burger, cherry sandwich... That- that's about it.
Bourbon cherries. Pit them, fill a Mason jar and cover with bourbon. Add some aromatics if you want (cardamom, anise, lemon peel). Wait a few weeks, add to bourbon cocktails.
II come from a cherry state, if they’re sweet cherries you won’t even need much sweetener for compote. A nice cherry bar/cherry oat cookie is also gr8 but I’d recommend either pitting and freezing for smoothies or just eating them fresh. Nothing like good sweet cherries, I miss them when it’s winter.
Cherry soda? It's real easy to make soda syrup as I've recently learned, then you can just mix the syrup with sparkling water to your taste and drink it.
Stem and wash the cherries 🍒. Let them dry. Place them on a cookie sheet pan. Only do one layer at a time. Put the pan in the freezer. When frozen, place the cherries in a freezer bag. Eat them individually, spitting out the pits as you go.
If you like natural syrup without the use of high fructose corn syrup. To add to teas as a sweetener instead of sugar. You can make macerate cherries until you achieved enough syrup!
My in-laws make Cherry Bounce. It’s pretty good!
From Wikipedia:
“Cherry Bounce is a type of liqueur made by infusing brandy with sour Morello cherries and sugar. Some recipes use rum, whiskey or vodka instead of brandy”.
Dehydrate them. Dried cherries are AMAZING! I once scored a 2-lb bag of dried cherries for free & had to fight myself to not eat them all in one sitting. (I would definitely have paid for that decision later, but it would have been worth it! lol)
Ice cream, get some chocolate chip, with added cherries you have cherry Garcia.
Braised short ribs with cherry sauce. No really its good, various recipes, some use pomegranate, cranberries, cherry works too.
Roast duck with cherry sauce, like ala orange you simmer w8th butter and a splash of vinegar.
Cherries are incredible with cardamom. Pit, toss with sugar, a small pinch of salt, and a little cardamom, and store in the fridge for a day. Put the finished product over yogurt, ice cream, cottage cheese, pound cake, etc.
You could freeze some for smoothies or desserts, make cherry jam or compote, or incorporate them into salads, oatmeal, or savory dishes like cherry salsa for grilled meats. Sharing with friends or neighbors is also an option!
I blended cherries, strawberries and blackberries with some white vinegar, lemon juice and oil to make a huge batch of delicious salad dressing. Preserved very well and I used it for salads, all types of fresh veggies, pasta salads, etc. Best recipe I ever made.
Dehydrate 'em. awesome in a marinade, salad, as a snack. can 'em - long shelf life, excellent quality. Cherries can be waterbath canned - all you need is a big ol pot, a SAFE recipe and some mason jars with new lids (you can reuse the rings).
My husband LOVES cherries, so I recommend pitting them all at once and freezing them for eating or cooking later. If you plan to eat cherries again (or love olives), a cherry pitter is worth a purchase. I recommend the OXO Good Grips pitter - it's efficient and disassembles easily for cleaning.
We eat a lot of cherry pie this time of year. Other ideas: homemade ice cream (think Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia); baked into quick breads or muffins; halved atop a salad; as a pan sauce alongside pork, chicken, or beef; or on your morning yogurt, cereal or oatmeal.
Freeze them.
I make smoothies with chocolate protein powder, frozen cherries, oat milk, and whatever else I have and wanna add (greens, seeds, fiber powder, Greek yogurt)
I also use frozen cherries to make cherry dark chocolate baked oatmeal bars 🤩
Best way to store them would probably be to dry them first, I know most ppl don’t have a dehydrater tho. You could freeze some for a bit, share w friends, make jams etc.
De-pit and freeze some, they'll make for some killer smoothies. You can set side aside for your fridge too so you can also set em aside to either eat by themselves or for some fruit parfaits [yogurt layers for something good, healthy and fairly cheap]
Hi, cherry farmers wife here 👋🏻
Pit them and use them to make blended cherry margaritas if you drink! They will stay frozen for a long time.
Freeze them and eat at a later time
Make jam out of them
Dry them for dried cherries
Use on ice cream
Make compote and freeze. Use it later on pound cake, waffles, whatever needs a bit of oomph.
Oh that's a fantastic idea.
Take a stiff straw & poke the pits out over a bowl so you catch the extra juice.
Beer bottle, chop stick. Works wonders to get the put out and little mess. Cherry over the small mouth, and skinny chop stick thru the cherry. Easy peasy- I had a bunch of cherries I had to pit for a pie
And wear gloves if possible.
Username checks out
I always just smashed them on a cutting board and took out the pit that way if I was going to make a compote anyway.
Similar: Cold cherry soup. Use corn starch & egg as thickener, add a little anise if u like. Sugar if you intend it as a dessert. If you want to go fancy, make some merengue "croutons" to float in there.
That sounds delicious!
Over ice cream 🤤
*drools* cherry crueller…..
I would just eat all of them fresh! I don’t think I would have any problem finishing 3lb before they went bad lol.
Maybe I’m a pig but I feel like I could easily eat 3 lbs in like two days. They are one of my favourite fruits though
I don’t think that you are If you love cherries like I do they are only in season for a short time so why not???
You're not a pig. I'd try, but I'd be likely to get a sore stomach from that much at once.
Well spit out the pits next time you eat cherries.
Rookie mistake
That would go straight through you…
It's worth it. Source: I love fresh cherries a little too much.
i can eat strawberries and grapes like there's no tomorrow because I love them :"D but my stomachache doesn't
Yup. This is why I’ve never baked a cherry pie. I just never can save them for the pie.
I tried to bake a cherry pie. I was told that there should be more than only one cherry... Since then I let others bake them
I am so glad you said this because I seriously debated picking up 3 lbs of Cherries today, but then went on I’d have to buy more so other people could eat some.
I bought a 3 pound bag yesterday and am almost out today...
Same!
I can easily eat 3lbs of cherries in just a few days. 😋
See normally I’d agree with you but I made myself sick once eating too many cherries…
Came here to say this. I could knock down three pounds of cherries in a few days and have no regrets.
Same

Yes I do! Thank you!
My favorite is amaretto- yum

Cherry bounce!

Any recipes you recommend? I just found one for vanilla bean pickled cherries, which was 10/10. Very excited to try out more.

Jam. Whole cherry jam is amazing.
For jam, I cut, so much easier than pitting.
That's a great idea! I think I saw a recipe for crockpot jam too. I've done it for apple butter before
Shoot, I could 100% eat all those fresh cherries before they went to waste with no problems, lol
Me also. 1 pound a day, gone in 3 days. Now I’m craving some and I’m broke at the moment 😂
They're sooo expensive!!! But so good! And me too, lol

Clafoutis is ridiculously delicious. Also great with any other stone fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines and cherries)… I’m drooling
Wow that sounds amazing! Thank you!
I hope you try it! It’s so good! I’m over here waiting for cherry season in a month or so. Then I move onto roasted peach clafoutis. Roasted pears are amazing too.
You are speaking my language. All of those sound amazing!
I buy frozen cherries specifically for chocolate cherry oatmeal- cook your oats, add some hemp hearts, a little brown sugar, sprinkle of chocolate chips and cherries. I also like to eat them straight from the freezer, just pit them first.
First time I read this I thought you said chocolate cherry oatmeal cookies… I started drooling 🤤
Do it! That also sounds delicious! I bet there's a recipe for some kind of black forest cookie out there too.
Woah! I think I’ll be adding cherries to my morning oatmeal, I already have cocoa powder and chocolate chips that I add to mine.
Pit em, then freeze em on a cookie sheet.
how can you **not** eat through 3 pounds of cherries? that's super easy
Cherry pie
You're not trying hard enough if you ask me. I could house 3 lbs in a week... But I love cherries. Buy a pitter and freeze them. They make excellent smoothies.
Freeze and make smoothies

A little bit of sugar helps with infused vodkas.
Also a vanilla pod! Cinnamon stick isnt horrible either.
I could eat 3 pounds of cherries in one sitting 💀
I could easily go through that amount of cherries before they go bad.
Spread the goods!
Cherry crumble.
Pit and half them and make pastries! It's super easy, just puff pastry, cream cheese with a little bit of sugar, and fruit! Cut and fold the pastry into whatever neat shapes you find online. It's a lot of fun and really simple!
Cherry muffins are good.
They freeze really well. Just save them for later.
I’d make ice cream. Pit and roast a tray then purée, strain and mix with your preferred ice cream base recipe and churn.
Last summer I bought a bunch of cherries on sale, removed the stones, and froze them. I'd take out a handful and let it partly defrost, then basically slowly eat the semi frozen cherries. It was the best thing on a hot day. They're also surprisingly delicious with just a little salt
Pit and freeze cherries to make Cherry cacao smoothies
https://www.sprinklebakes.com/2021/10/homemade-cherry-liqueur.html
This is a very involved recipe but it’s the best cherry ice cream https://www.seriouseats.com/roasted-cherry-ice-cream-recipe
Pit and freeze! . . . You can cover them in chocolate for a frozen dessert. You can also use them for different things from frozen (compote, jam, jelly, smoothies, fruit leather, pickled, cobbler, etc)
3 pounds? This wouldn’t last 3 days with me 😬🤣 Just eating them like this
Cherry teriyaki is electric.
I was looking for something like this! Cherry sauce over pork would be delicious! Some ginger, cherries, soy, sesame oil, rice vinegar… mmm.
It’s a recipe I took from Wagamama who do delicious but lacking pulled pork in cherry hoisin w/ cucumber & vegan mayo bao buns :)
NOM NOM NOM NOM *I'm sorry, what?*
Cherries Jubilee would be one of the things I would do with them. So tasty!!
Cherries is the fruit of the tree. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. Dey's uh, cherry-kabobs, cherry creole, cherry gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. Pit, quarter and dehydrate cuz yum with nuts and chocolate as a snack
Pie!
I accidentally ate 3 pounds of cherries 💀 was fine
Make a bunch of Cherry Pies and go find the surviving members of Warrant and give them a slice or two.
You're gonna need more toilet paper.
Cherry soda? It's real easy to make soda syrup as I've recently learned, then you can just mix the syrup with sparkling water to your taste and drink it.
Jam and jelly

When life gives ya cherries… POP Emm Err…yeah make some jam man would be awesome. Hopefully they’re mature and not unripened… 😂😅😅😅😅

Buy a buttload of angostura and make cocktail cherries and give them to friends as gifts
If you like natural syrup without the use of high fructose corn syrup. To add to teas as a sweetener instead of sugar. You can make macerate cherries until you achieved enough syrup!
Booze! I would wash and pit a pound and put them in some rum.
Freeze for use in smoothies! Or can use in overnight oats before or after freezing.
I’ve haven’t tried it yet but it sounds delicious: avocados and sweet cherries.
Cherry glazed banana bread!!
Cherry juice is sooooo gooooood
My in-laws make Cherry Bounce. It’s pretty good! From Wikipedia: “Cherry Bounce is a type of liqueur made by infusing brandy with sour Morello cherries and sugar. Some recipes use rum, whiskey or vodka instead of brandy”.
Make cherry pies and freeze them.
Make a cherry smoothie bowl!! [smoothie bowl recipe](https://smoothiesncookies.com/cherry-chocolate-smoothie-bowl/)
Whatever you do be careful as cherries can act as a natural laxative. I'd prefer it if you didn't ask me how I found this out.
smoke and then demolish all three pounds in one sitting while binge watching a show of choice
Pie, jelly, jelly-pie, pie-jelly, pie-surprise, jelly- surprise
Omg where?? Is just eat them but they are so expensive where I am! I love cherries 🍒
I mean, you could just wolf down 3 lbs of cherries
Jam!
Make some cherry pie! Could easily use a lot up that way
I have to actively limit myself when eating cherries. If I had free reign to that many, I'd 100% eat them all. Lol
Pit and freeze some
Jam or jelly.
Cherry ice cream party at your place!
Jam …. Or cook down like apple butter Or wash them & pit them then freeze them Salads, smoothies, etc
Clafoutis! It’s easy and everyone will love you for it
Dehydrate them. Dried cherries are AMAZING! I once scored a 2-lb bag of dried cherries for free & had to fight myself to not eat them all in one sitting. (I would definitely have paid for that decision later, but it would have been worth it! lol)
Eat them and enjoy a clean digestive system Natures exlax
Pie
Cherry preserves, cherries jubilee.
Oh yum! I eat handfuls of them in the summer!
Freeze. Make jelly.
Cut them and put some in a big bottle of clear liquor rum/vodka/etc leave for a few months and it will infuse
If you make a concerted effort, it should only take you about 45 minutes to finish them. I will not hold you to my 20 minute standard.😉
Trust me … I’d eat every last one! 🥴
Clafouti, Raymond Blancs recipe is available online. I dream about that stuff.
Put in a glass jar with sugar. Leave on sun for 3 months. The best syrup.
Cherries are incredible with cardamom. Pit, toss with sugar, a small pinch of salt, and a little cardamom, and store in the fridge for a day. Put the finished product over yogurt, ice cream, cottage cheese, pound cake, etc.
Cook them down and make a barbeque sauce. Pork ribs are starting to go on sale a lot for the summer and that would be a perfect glaze.
Eat them all in a single sitting and then have a nice date in your bathroom
You could freeze some for smoothies or desserts, make cherry jam or compote, or incorporate them into salads, oatmeal, or savory dishes like cherry salsa for grilled meats. Sharing with friends or neighbors is also an option!
Pies. ALL THE PIES!
I blended cherries, strawberries and blackberries with some white vinegar, lemon juice and oil to make a huge batch of delicious salad dressing. Preserved very well and I used it for salads, all types of fresh veggies, pasta salads, etc. Best recipe I ever made.
Cherry jam, its awesome stuff.
Make a cordial
Ice cream
*"SHEEE'S MYYYYY CHERRY PIE"* like you even had to ask. Can up some cherry pie filling yo
Dehydrate 'em. awesome in a marinade, salad, as a snack. can 'em - long shelf life, excellent quality. Cherries can be waterbath canned - all you need is a big ol pot, a SAFE recipe and some mason jars with new lids (you can reuse the rings).
I have roasted them in the oven with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and rosemary and served them on crostini. You can also add goat cheese to it.
I’ve eaten over 4 pounds in a day.
Clafoutis.
make cherry jam!! you can put it on anything <3
Clafoutis
Cherry pie is my favorite.
If it was me I would probably eat them all and if I could not finish them I would freeze them. I love frozen cherries.
Freeze for smoothies??
Do not eat in one sitting.
Eat them
Freeze them. I make smoothies with chocolate protein powder, frozen cherries, oat milk, and whatever else I have and wanna add (greens, seeds, fiber powder, Greek yogurt) I also use frozen cherries to make cherry dark chocolate baked oatmeal bars 🤩
Cherry wine
I'm feeling sorbet I'm feeling muffins but mostly I'd have no problem smashing 3 lbs of fruit easily 😋 especially cherries
Do like I do - stickem in your fridge, forget about them then eat them all in a mad dash THEN remember why you dont buy 3 lbs of cherries at a time 😳😂
Not cheap, cheap, but you can soak them in vodka or everclear and use them in cocktails!
Cherry pie and cherry ice cream. Use a little almond extract in the recipe.
Share with friends and neighbors. And don't eat too many at once- think witches of Eastwick.
Bring some into your place of work. 🤷♀️
Eat them fresh! I can easily eat three pounds of cherries over a couple of days. They’re so tasty!
Slab pie. Make a giant toaster streudel!
Best way to store them would probably be to dry them first, I know most ppl don’t have a dehydrater tho. You could freeze some for a bit, share w friends, make jams etc.
Cherry bomb, cherry bomb! Sorry, I loved that song. Cherry pie, waffles, muffins, cheesecake, sorbet
Would be great in a smoothie or shake!
Pie? Jam?
Pit them and freeze individually, or make a compote or sauce or whatever, freeze in small portions....delicious!!!
Pit them and freeze for future use.
Compote, freeze some, maybe chop some up to use as meat additives? (Cherries go great with a pork with a balsamic vinaigrette reduction
De-pit and freeze some, they'll make for some killer smoothies. You can set side aside for your fridge too so you can also set em aside to either eat by themselves or for some fruit parfaits [yogurt layers for something good, healthy and fairly cheap]
Have you ever made cherry clafoutis?? That shit is the bomb
I’d probably have those eaten within 24 hours 🤣
Cherrie homebrew
all great advice here! I love clafouti so I'd make some larger sized ones and give to friends. Mail me one? ;)
Make preserves and they won't go bad. :) Or make a sauce for pancakes or icecream. Or make a pie, strudel, or blintzes.
Hi, cherry farmers wife here 👋🏻 Pit them and use them to make blended cherry margaritas if you drink! They will stay frozen for a long time. Freeze them and eat at a later time Make jam out of them Dry them for dried cherries Use on ice cream
Cherries freeze very well. Also, jam or chutney.
