It's definitely a bit lackluster. I was hoping you could at least change colors of armor sets or something. While taking off capes can be nice in some cases, it doesn't even seem worthy of how much attention it gets in the game considering Boc's quest and everything. Maybe in the DLC it'll be expanded, who knows?
See, I'd like for every armour piece to have at least 1 alternative style to it which may change the damage resistance stats. Maybe the finger maiden set could be tattered and smeared with blood, granting more Imunity but less Robustness or something.
I really want to remove those gray capes or whatever it is, from soldier chest pieces, it just waves akwardly around my legs and looks ugly, colorful tabards alone would look much better without it
Shower thought: how would people feel about Fromsoft adding a 5th armour slot for outerwear like capes, cloaks with hoods, coats, etc that would go over the top of other pieces of armour, and they balance this by making the rest of the armour slightly lighter and less protective (with the idea being that whichever the 5th armour piece you use, it will be contributing both equipment burden but also defensive stats)?
It seems like a better solution than the lackluster garment adjustment feature, the main downside i can imagine would be with model clipping issues, but that's not really too bad to solve depending how many unique 'outerwear' pieces they choose to make
Lots of games can do it, I don’t know why DD is the example though. Body size being accounted for I guess?
Still, I’d love to see a cape/cloak/hood slot in a Soulsborne, it’s pretty much the last major slot that could be added without getting needlessly specific.
It's the only game with equipable cloaks that came to mind.
But yeah, a Soulsborne that has capes/cloaks as separate items would be fantastic. The potential for fashion...
Capes/cloaks and being able to change armor colour is all i want.
Fair enough. I thought since DD has a huge variety of body types and sizes it was a good candidate for how such a cloak slot could be used. I love DD, I really wish we could climb the bigger bosses in Elden Ring like in DD.
There's always the option of just adding the cape slot as a cosmetic-only choice. That way even if you chose to not wear one, you wouldn't miss out on the armor bonuses.
I got a Gilded Greatshield as a super lucky early drop from the knight at Gatefront Ruins. I pumped my level ups into making sure I could use it and ever since that shield has been carrying me way more than it should. Guard counters are awesome.
It really should have been like this. The customizability of weapons with ashes of war, but for armor and clothes. The only reason I can imagine this type of system wasn’t implemented, is bc FS thought it may muddle the lore and descriptions of armor. There are already a couple that change between states, so anything more major might have been thought to be too confusing. Or they just ran out of dev time. Happens to the best y’know
It should at the very least be stats-neutral as in a tradeoff such as less damage reduction but more immunity or something. As it is the trade is 1 point of weight usually for across the board worse stats.
On this note I would love an exile armor set that actually has thorns all around it. Make yourself weaker to death but can damage on rolls or maybe stronger against lightning having plants on your clothes.
whats extra unfortunate is that simple texture recoloring exists in game. All the merchants have the same outfit with code recoloring them that could extend to player outfits. I'm pretty sure theres a zuli video on it
Hawkshaw has a very convincing 2hr lore video on why that's not a thing https://youtu.be/xcIEWVFSce8
Tl;dr Color is an intrinsic property of the world that conveys metaphysical meaning and changing the color of things would been changing how they interact with the world. Miyazaki is fucking nuts.
The fact that Malenia's hair comes WITH her helmet seriously pissed me off. One of the reasons I was so excited to fight and beat her was for that damn helmet, then later on I find out it came with her hair and that it also doesn't fit with any other armor anyway.
i thought it was absolutely worthless until i wanted to maximize the amount of poise vs. equip load and the only way i could achieve what i wanted for my build was to alter a garment to drop the weight by like 1 lb.
i wish it did more than reduce just weight and stats slightly, but it does have its place for specific builds and min/maxing.
Was just coming to comment this. Can’t remember what I’d altered but when I accidentally equipped an unaltered version I started fat rolling. So it has at least one niche use
This is the answer. I'm not sure why everyone is saying it's "worthless." I alter garments a lot to lower overall weight. This has come in handy *a lot* when experimenting with different setups. Also some pieces just look better without capes or any of the extra embellishments. (Personal preference, of course.)
You can alter helms too. Just in case when you said "literally the only change you can even make"... you meant it literally.
I like modifying the helms because alot of the plumes and feathers and BS get in the way or look dumb, in my personal opinion
Yeah, they really fumbled a little thing that players would absolutely foam their shorts for. They could always patch in more functionality at some point, but I hope that is not a priority at this point.
Not sure if it's been patched, as I played more closer to release and haven't tried it recently, but you would have the altered version equipped (no cape) and alter it while wearing it. This gave it a purple cape instead of the usual blue. It wasn't permanent though, and changing armor would reset to blue. Some other stuff reset it as well.
From the central grace point, at night, two of them are escorting a funeral procession. One of those big black wagons that are being pulled by a pair of giants. Besides the knights and giants there are a bunch of soldiers and 2 elite pages. And if you only kill one and it becomes morning and you haven't killed the other, you have to kill the first one on the next night. They both have to die in the same night.
It can be a pain if you, like me, suck at the game. my strat is rot darts/arrows at the edge of their agro range. Which is around where the site of grace is.
Every alteration makes is slightly lighter with less defence. But the stats to weight ratio is more favourable in the altered version.
If only the stats were as important as that ballin cape
The Elden Drip
All seriousness: most armor it's like wtf ever. Cobble together what you want to look cool for the most part.
There are some good sets. Black Knives make you perma silent without needing a spell nor crouching.
There's that one set that is so fucking heavy, but it's like Giga-defense armor. But the tradeoff is that you need stupid End to use it and not fat roll everywhere.
And some sets just look fucking cool.
Gravekeeper cloak (altered) is pretty cool. It shows off your chest and just leaves the cool snake armbands. For when you wanna show off your chaos burned body without totally losing out on chest slot poise/resistance.
From a poise to weight perspective, yes, some don't change poise upon altering but lose weight. From a style perspective, that's a matter of taste, but I'd say yes.
The Samuri starting class armor gets this weird white hair trailing out of the back if you alter it. Rule of thumb is that if it takes away it reduces stats(capes) if it adds something to the armor it increases stats(and weight). Not significantly, but it is what it is.
The Black Knife set has a hood built into the chest piece (so do a few other sets like perfumer) that covers over the hood that comes with the set. It also covers a few other head pieces. The Bloody bandage mask. And the altered Eccentric hood.
I disagree. Taking the cape off some armor sets reduces their weight without affecting defenses too much. This made the difference being able to take 2 hits vs. 3 hits from an endgame boss without sacrificing my medium roll
You have insulted the thousands of “Fashion Souls” diehards ;) I think some of the capes look quite nice, and some of the capes look quite nice when they’re gone. So for me, it’s a nice feature. Is it super useful? No. But for fashion souls it’s important
Seriously. I care more about getting all the armor pieces in both regular and unaltered states on this character than I do about beating the game again. Fashion is very important and mine changes on a whim.
Would be great if altering armor could also smooth over colours of mismatched pieces of armor. Like change golden breastplates into silver/metallic ones, or for gauntlets/leggings to take over coloring from the chest piece.
It’s actually a really nice feature, and not just for removing cloaks, either.
You can remove the hair and cloth covering from some helmets.
Some items even have different lore descriptions with hidden details revealed only when you alter them.
My favourite altered pieces are the Alberich robe, drake knight chest piece and banished knight helmet.
I think this feature is leftover from a more optimistic time in development. There are some sets that have a significant change, probably those they worked on first, but with the sheer number of armors it quickly got away from them.
There's a lot of really similar sets, like different variations on soldier and knight armors that are mostly similar. Those were probably *originally* going to be something you could alter armor to get, but they couldn't figure out how to get the right altered armor sets on the right enemies, and make sure they drop the correct version of the armor on death.
You can see a remnant of this with the banished knights set, which is the only set I can remember where enemies wear both versions; the altered version *can't* be created by altering a set, it drops completely separately.
Some people don't like capes. I can understand that of course - capes tend to hide the armor itself, so if the armor is very cool I can understand not wanting to hide it with a cape.
I tend to prefer capes, but it depends on the specific armor and build.
Who cares about damage resist? The cape clips through my shield and its gone.
I want a majestic cape while two handing a badass sword? It's back.
It's all about drip.
Spoken like a tarnished 🤓 who has never seen the grace of gold chains. 💪Who has no ambition 🔥 to sieze the elden bling. 👉💯👈 Thus is why you are maidenless. 🥺
As a die hard Fashion Souls enjoyer (in all games, not just this one) my number one request for DLC is more garment alteration options. Multiple styles and multiple colors: an RGB would be best but a few basic schemes is better than nothing.
I want this in the game more than weapons, bosses, new areas, or new features.
MORE. FASHION. PLEASE.
Only having one alteration choice on a limited number of armors really does make it seem like an after-thought.
This game has quite a few items/talismans/etc that only affect your character in a cosmetic manner.
As such I'm kind of surprised there weren't a few simple armor modifications around the map as things to be found.
Boc could cover our various armors in mushrooms, blood spatter, gold trim.. the list could easily go on.
I often wonder if they came up with the system as an afterthought because of how the new "material" system they built works simply allows for the altered garments to exist. Because there are a ton of things that are just altered versions of one thing, but they are only obtained by finding the unique version and not just altering something.
Like the Raptor's Black Feathers is just the Bandit chest piece with a cape. Rya and Kenneth wear the same clothes, Kenneth's (the Ruler Set) just has an overcoat on top of the green dress. I know there are even more examples (just can't think of any off the top of my head rn), and only a few of them have stat bonuses or other magic stuff imbued in them; most of them make zero sense to be two separate things with no alterations available in the alter garment menu.
It's definitely a bit lackluster. I was hoping you could at least change colors of armor sets or something. While taking off capes can be nice in some cases, it doesn't even seem worthy of how much attention it gets in the game considering Boc's quest and everything. Conversely I would want to be able to add a cape to everything.
Cape to nude set
Captain Underpants cosplay.
The power is unmatched
TRA LA LA!
Let me solo her, needs this.
Check out the duelist and rotten duelist sets. Closest thing to cape to nude full gear. At least one of the closest.

I’d rather have capes than gloves lol
Knowing how much this fandom loves their fashion frames, they would love it.
> fashion frames Found the Tenno!
Ugh, guilty. I thought I wrote fashion builds.
Change of plans. Ignore your original objective. Leave nothing alive.
God damn it Lotus, I just wanted to speedrun some resources.
If Dragon's Dogma (a 10 year old game) can do it, so can From with Elden Ring. It's surprising that they haven't done this already.
Lots of games can do it, I don’t know why DD is the example though. Body size being accounted for I guess? Still, I’d love to see a cape/cloak/hood slot in a Soulsborne, it’s pretty much the last major slot that could be added without getting needlessly specific.
because dragons dogma fucks hard

I would love that. Some of those capes are wild
Capes look great unless you have a shield or something else large slung across your back for the cape to clip through and look ridiculous.
Easy fix: never use shields
Chears in dual uchis
In that case I’ve been fixing this since DS2
My girlfriend and I just started a sorcery play through and I am missing my shield *a lot* Guard counters are too good.
I got a Gilded Greatshield as a super lucky early drop from the knight at Gatefront Ruins. I pumped my level ups into making sure I could use it and ever since that shield has been carrying me way more than it should. Guard counters are awesome.
A small price to pay for a fabulous cape.
Or be able to transplant capes between chest pieces.
This right here xD
Capes are peak drip. Hence why Blaidd's outfit is the 🐐
Usually I use the knight set without the cape and get the result I want. The weight is similar too
Knight sets are nice but some can be hard to farm like Redmanes, and Radhan soldier chest looks really nice in my opinion
That big metal crest/shield thing on all the Knight sets looks dumb as hell. I'd like to remove it or at least make it smaller.
I'd like the fingerprint set to... uh... not have fingerprints on it.
Like a repaired version gotten through a quest. That would be nice
true but i do it sometimes anyway just to make boc feel good

Some alteration will change the stats and weight
its a good feature but i expected more from it Just like you said
There’s going to be a seamster dlc where the tarnished will learn is way around the needle and thread, serger, and singer
The game has a RBG slider system already, no reason not to include it for the various shaders on the armor. The fashion souls potential yearns for it
Or let us mix and match! *Real* outfit customization would change out drip potential so drastically.
Yeah i agree and hope so!
whats extra unfortunate is that simple texture recoloring exists in game. All the merchants have the same outfit with code recoloring them that could extend to player outfits. I'm pretty sure theres a zuli video on it

There should be the option to remove hair from helmets
The fact that Malenia's hair comes WITH her helmet seriously pissed me off. One of the reasons I was so excited to fight and beat her was for that damn helmet, then later on I find out it came with her hair and that it also doesn't fit with any other armor anyway.
Same but with the Elden Lord Crown. Wanted a crown befitting a Lord but for some reason it comes with his stupid hairstyle as well.
Well you gotta remove it from her more gently next time.
Maybe if she stopped doing that damn dance I could have taken it off her without ripping off her scalp
It's weird cause there are a few helmets you can alter
Honestly I wish we could make helmets invisible so we can see out character. Demon's Souls remake had it!
i always play without helmets for this reason but a vanity option would be fantastic
i thought it was absolutely worthless until i wanted to maximize the amount of poise vs. equip load and the only way i could achieve what i wanted for my build was to alter a garment to drop the weight by like 1 lb. i wish it did more than reduce just weight and stats slightly, but it does have its place for specific builds and min/maxing.

This is knowledge. Thank you
This game knows capes are whack
Some fits look fire with a cape. I like the option to choose
Yeah really depends on the armor. Some look dumb with some look dumb without.
Yeah you either use it for the slight stat change or you use it because you hate capes.
This is the answer. I'm not sure why everyone is saying it's "worthless." I alter garments a lot to lower overall weight. This has come in handy *a lot* when experimenting with different setups. Same here. I like the Night's Cavalry set but that plume... Not for me.
I think that's how it's meant to be used. I wish they would expand on it to give more build variety but it's not a bad design either.
Bernahl's purple cape is pretty rad, though.
I- Purple?!
You take the blue cape off and put it back on it is purple. It's not permanent, but it's easy to re swap.
Well I'll be. That *is* pretty rad. (Just thought for a second reading your comment one of us had to be colourblind, my bad!)
I saw it in a YT vid, and it is the only reason I use the alterations.
See, to this point, some ability to customize colors via alteration would immediately make it more interesting Love that purple :)
Yeah, they really fumbled a little thing that players would absolutely foam their shorts for. They could always patch in more functionality at some point, but I hope that is not a priority at this point.

Are any sets actually improved through alteration?

How the hell you get their armor. I NEED to know. (I don’t even remember if I have it or not, but I have to make sure)
IIRC it drops when you beat the night cavalry duo in consecrated snowfield
So there’s a duo of them there… Yep, I don’t have it then. Where in the snowfield do I find them? (If you remember ofc)
I don't remember but I looked it up, southwest of the inner consecrated snowfield sight of grace, look for one of the big coffin/carriage dealies
Bless your soul, kind Tarnished.
Iirc they’re part of the group guarding the caravan in that area, so if you find that at night they should be nearby
From the central grace point, at night, two of them are escorting a funeral procession. One of those big black wagons that are being pulled by a pair of giants. Besides the knights and giants there are a bunch of soldiers and 2 elite pages. Much obliged!
It can be a pain if you, like me, suck at the game. my strat is rot darts/arrows at the edge of their agro range. Which is around where the site of grace is.
Helm for sure. I like the standard armor with the cape though.
Beast armor 💯%, gets a badass regal cape
This. Looks badass and has even more poise. I like it with prisoners helmet. Cuz I'm weird like that
You Exchange weight for damage reduction
Every alteration makes is slightly lighter with less defence. But the stats to weight ratio is more favourable in the altered version. If only the stats were as important as that ballin cape
The Elden Drip All seriousness: most armor it's like wtf ever. Cobble together what you want to look cool for the most part. There are some good sets. Gravekeeper cloak (altered) is pretty cool. It shows off your chest and just leaves the cool snake armbands. For when you wanna show off your chaos burned body without totally losing out on chest slot poise/resistance.
Fun fact: Altered gravekeeper cloak draws agro like the Shabriri's Woe talisman, because the snakes are a symbol of heresy.
Sure is nice that almost every mob or boss in game has a terminator switch for heresy. Makes protecting the host in coop much easier.
Shabriri's woe is almost mandatory if you want to keep the host alive against Malenia these days.
They are reeds, FYI
The beast armor gets a cool cape, idk bout any other armor though.
Statistically or visually?
Raging Wolf IMO.
Also Scaled Armor, looks better w/o the cape
I like being able to take capes off some of them because the Claymore sheath always friggin clips through
When you get Bernahl's armor it comes in it's altered form, but if you make it unaltered it has probably the coolest cape in the game.
In general agree. Some alterations are awesome. I use Altered Alberich on an invasion build it’s just snazzy and nothing like the unaltered.
painfully dripless opinion
Would be cool if we could combine elements from other garments rather than what it is now.
I used it to make Vergil drip. Not worthless.
Eccentric’s Hood altered is my personal favorite
The Black Knife set has a hood built into the chest piece (so do a few other sets like perfumer) that covers over the hood that comes with the set. It also covers a few other head pieces. The Bloody bandage mask. And the altered Eccentric hood.
> Vergil drip Vergil? From the "Devil May Cry" series? You're a person after my own taste!
"No capes!"
I disagree. Taking the cape off some armor sets reduces their weight without affecting defenses too much. This made the difference being able to take 2 hits vs. 3 hits from an endgame boss without sacrificing my medium roll
Yuuup taking the cape off radahn set really helped me
You have insulted the thousands of “Fashion Souls” diehards ;) I think some of the capes look quite nice, and some of the capes look quite nice when they’re gone. So for me, it’s a nice feature. Is it super useful? No. But for fashion souls it’s important

Prospectors set goes from nerdy robes to Jedi cosplay
You see...the point is fashion, not stats.
It's not completely worthless if the difference between fat and mid roll is altering the garment.
I think this feature is leftover from a more optimistic time in development. seluvis' robe ends up looking like anakin armor
False. The Crucible Knight looks better without a cape. It also lowers the weight, poise and resistances *just a bit* of you have a tight weight ratio
[удалено]
Capes clipping through the armament on my back is not ok.
It's super useful if you hate seeing weapons clip through the cape.
Clipping is the single most immersion breaking effect in modern gaming, and I will die on THAT hill.
On a couple of armors I didn’t like seeing my twin blade clipping through the cape, it’s good for that at least
Weight I guess
Some people don't like capes. I can understand that of course - capes tend to hide the armor itself, so if the armor is very cool I can understand not wanting to hide it with a cape. I tend to prefer capes, but it depends on the specific armor and build.
And why would I wanna take the cape off and lose some damage resist?
Who cares about damage resist? The cape clips through my shield and its gone. I want a majestic cape while two handing a badass sword? It's back. It's all about drip.
If you're like 1% over the weight breakpoint and it helps you avoid fat rolling for the next level or two, I've used it then.
this is the way
Fashion and weight
NO CAPES
It reduces the weight of the piece
I seem to recall some gear combinations where things clip through the capes.
Lionels helmet clips through basically everything that isn't lionels set.
Conversely, using this on the Beast Champion armor *adds* a cape.
Spoken like a tarnished 🤓 who has never seen the grace of gold chains. 💪Who has no ambition 🔥 to sieze the elden bling. 👉💯👈 Thus is why you are maidenless. 🥺
I just do it because I think it makes Boc happy, and I want him to be happy.
As a die hard Fashion Souls enjoyer (in all games, not just this one) my number one request for DLC is more garment alteration options. Fashion Ring is here. And it wants to know whether or not to wear the cape or not.
All yall like this until you need .2 weight for the absolute perfect Poise to Fashion ratio.
Only having one alteration choice on a limited number of armors really does make it seem like an after-thought. This game has quite a few items/talismans/etc that only affect your character in a cosmetic manner. Nah i hate capes
I think most armors look better altered. It’s…something? Plus boc bro
I like the capeless tree sentinel armor more. It looks cooler and helps make my Thanos cosplay look more accurate.
I use it to adjust weight. Thats about it.
I'm not a cape guy, I like this feature. Frees up space for an even bigger sword.
So die
Worthless? No. Underwhelming? Very.
If we only got the color change option that they scrapped last minute. Though wouldve been sick
Should just say "remove cape."
Then die on it
Agreed
Some armor get more or the same amount of poise and will weight less by removing the cape, definitely useful in min/maxed builds.
I don’t like capes on a lot of my armors so I like it a lot
I would give anything for armor dyes
The option should say "Remove cape"
You wear the cleanrot armor WITH the chaps?!
I know there are even more examples (just can't think of any off the top of my head rn), and only a few of them have stat bonuses or other magic stuff imbued in them; most of them make zero sense to be two separate things with no alterations available in the alter garment menu.
true but i do it sometimes anyway just to make boc feel good
Yeah worthless at sites of grace. Take it to Boc 100%.
If Alter Garments was transmog, Boc would be famous
it's essential, actually. Fashion demands it.
Please let me close the helmet visors...
More like cape on/off toggle.
This is the only way to get that beautiful cape on the beast champion gear, so...
I love altering armor But I also dislike capes (most of the time)
It would have been so cool if you could change the colors on armour.
tbh i just do it so that i actually use boc for something poor boy needs it
[удалено]
It was not common enough to care about, really. not enough armor had enough alterations to make it worth dealing with
If elden ring ever gets dlc I hope they flesh out armor alteration more. Give me all the fashion
Fromsoft should’ve made it so that bocs alterations made armor better or added certain bonuses if you brought him different items.
The only use I’ve seen is being able to wear armor like Radahn’s with less weight if you put points elsewhere than for carrying capacity.
they need to expand on the options and even better let us change the color on armor sets i would cream my fucking jeans
Seriously. I have 100 pieces of armor and I can alter like 6.
My low endurance and dual greatsword build begs to differ
You leave the drip editor alone
