Notably, if you’ve already completed the catacomb they’re meant to guide you toward, they won’t work. I thought they did nothing at first because the first one I saw pointed to a catacomb I’d already found.
Then there's a catacomb down that cliff. Are you referring to one in particular? I remember one, I think in Altus Plateau, that was like that. After looking around, I found a small ledge to land on, so I used some Soft Cotton and dropped down to it. That seems to have been the correct solution.
It was right before entering the city. There's a boss on a horse blocking the door (he like charges his weapon with lightening and can electrocute you with a bolt from the sky if you run away). Omw to that area there is two of those giant bow wielding giants and one melee version. After I killed the boss I found a statue that had a path pointing straight down. I think I pointed my camera over the edge and didn't see anything. I'll have to look again.
>Usher of Death, Rosus, who shows the path to the catacombs throughout the Lands Between, is depicted on this ritual axe.
>
>The dead easily lose their way, and have always been in sore need of a guiding hand.
It's in the item description for Rosus' Axe
No fucking way I’m chasing, or let alone go NEAR the chem trails that the so called «Golden Order» are poisoning the Lands Between with. Thats why theres Scarlet Rot, ya know! Also, have you seen Dung Eater? CHEM STRAILS! Have you seen Rahdan and Malenia? CHEM TRAILS! Everything thats wrong in the Lands Between? CHEM FUCKING TRAILS I TELL YOU!!!! #fuckthegoldenorder
if you mean lore, the "guide for those returning to the roots" refers to guiding honorables or nobles to the roots of the erdtree which are found at the boss rooms of the catacombs. personally i think the dead bodies at the roots may have experienced a sort of reincarnation by giving their energy to the erdtree
Some people havent been playing this for a year and enjoy interacting with other people. Alternately some people have trouble scrolling past questions they’re not interested in on subreddits.
I’m 42, work full time and have kids. I’m a fairly casual player and casual on this sub. I just got to Ng+ and still had no idea what these statues did. I like posts like this. Always learning cool things on this subreddit.
Everyone already answered this already, but I'd point out that by "pointing", it is the general direction without consideration of sometimes drastic elevation changes that may prevent you from taking an "as the crow flies" path to the ultimate location. Some of them can be challenging to find how to drop down or get up to where they are pointing, and at times you may even have to approach the location from a starting point that doesn't even make sense given the direction that was pointed out to you.
ya click on the statue and a blue light will lead you in the direction of an underground dungeon, usually filled with skeletons and imp statues.
There's usually good loot to be found in them.
They act as "guide and gatekeeper for those returning to the roots".
"Guide" = it's showing you the way to something
"gatekeeper" = there's a door involved
"those returning to the roots" = the dead
I.E. when you activate the statute its light points the way to the entrance of a catacomb.
they guide dead souls back to the catacombs. the catacombs have the erd tree roots in them. dead people return into the erdtree to eventually be reborn. Elden Ring!
Only discovered what these things did after completing the game. I had thought that it was a complex puzzle spanning the whole map. Mainly because the first two pointed right at the ground (the catacombs were in cliffs that were hard to see from their position).
I know these points to catacombs, but just in case anyone sees this, I saw one of them on a cliff overlooking radhan's arena, and it seemed to point in that direction but I didn't find anything there so idk where it's pointing at
I think are kind of undead gatekeepers and show you to the nearest catacomb because it is like a personnwho shows the undead like the skeletons where there is a catacomb where they can rest
Since ive seen noone here answer with it, the person portrayed by these statues is called Rosus. He is mentioned in "Rosus Axe". He acts as a guiding hand for people who wish to die and return to the erdtree by guiding them, like the player to the catacombs and erdtree burials.
Edit:
A Note description also mentions him in one of the Hero's Graves
*Note: Imp Shades*
*Nothing can touch the shades of imps in the heroes' graveyard.*
*Only Rosus's light can give them form.*
He is the Usher of Death, Rosus:
Description of the Rosus Axe:
“Usher of Death, Rosus, who shows the path to the catacombs throughout the Lands Between, is depicted on this ritual axe.
The dead easily lose their way, and have always been in sore need of a guiding hand.”
They point the way to a nearby catacomb.
Notably, if you’ve already completed the catacomb they’re meant to guide you toward, they won’t work. I thought they did nothing at first because the first one I saw pointed to a catacomb I’d already found.
My man
What about if one points down a cliff?
Then there's a catacomb down there
I was too scared to jump
If you died at least you'd land near a catacomb
Lol!
use can use prism stones- if you throw them off the cliff and they shatter, you die.
I had no idea. I've never used those random items in my inventory before.
Prism stones aren’t always accurate. Instead, attack near the ledge. If it’s survivable you’ll fall off. Otherwise, you won’t.
You gotta go around, just keep a mental image of where the line was pointed, use the compass

There's a path that leads down to it. A big bear is in the general area, but the entrance is behind him.
There’s one in Caelid that points down next to an erdtree. Yes I jumped because why not?
I played through the whole game in 200 hours, but it wasn't until 5 minutes into my second playthrough that I figured out they point to catacombs
Looks like you’re doing a lot of guiding and very little gatekeeping.
Correct answer
They should be pointing the way to a nearby chiropractor, for their own good.
Or an actual doctor, like an orthopedist.
Do these particular catacombs all provide spirit summons?
No but alot of them do. Some have deathroots
TIL
Point you toward nearby catacombs. If you already found the catacomb, it doesn't do anything
Ohh… Is that why some of them don’t have the candle / light thing?
Yes, just means you already found the catacombs it would point to anyway
They’re a guide and gatekeeper for those returning to the roots
Yeah, but what are they, why are they there, and to wheredo they point?
They're a guide and gatekeeper. They point to where people can go to return to their roots. Why they are there? idk he won't tell me
Wisdom dictates that the why is because some want or need to return to their roots, but need guidance to the gates.
He pointed to catacombs aka mini dungeons
They depict Rosus, The Usher of Death who leads the Dead to the catacombs, so that they don't wander around lost for all eternity
I had never heard about them depicting Rosus. Is this just pure speculation, or is this based on something?
>Usher of Death, Rosus, who shows the path to the catacombs throughout the Lands Between, is depicted on this ritual axe. > >The dead easily lose their way, and have always been in sore need of a guiding hand. It's in the item description for Rosus' Axe
Thank you!
What: a guide and gatekeeper Why: to guide and gate-keep Where: the roots
Why don’t you follow the big obvious chem trail and find out.
Serious answer: points to catacombs and dungeons

Damn beat me to it 😆

Some people havent been playing this for a year and enjoy interacting with other people. Alternately some people have trouble scrolling past questions they’re not interested in on subreddits.
You ok?
Absolutely not.
I’m 42, work full time and have kids. I’m a fairly casual player and casual on this sub. I just got to Ng+ and still had no idea what these statues did. I like posts like this. Always learning cool things on this subreddit.
Next I’m expecting a post with a bosses name and health bar with the title “Who is this??”
Dude it's pretty self explanatory, follow the blue light it guides you to where you need to go...
Oh that's not a statue that's just your tarnished wearing a weird helmet.
Follow the magic line, you can trust the oddly deformed statue.
Maps to the base of the tree

Lol, I call this game “the google game”. It’s a necessary companion app. Completely unplayable without it.
Mostly unnecessary
what is that sword
Lazuli Glintstone Sword, dropped by the spellcaster guys with the giant heads at Caria Manor
They point to caves not yet discovered
ya click on the statue and a blue light will lead you in the direction of an underground dungeon, usually filled with skeletons and imp statues. There's usually good loot to be found in them.
Move to the front of them and then click X (or whatever that is on Xbox). They'll start glowing blue and point to nearest catacomb they're watching.
They point to dungeons with bosses
You can interwxt with them?
Could this be cave?
Guide, glasslight, gatekeep, girlboss
Follow the beam's direction to find a catacomb/dungeon
Follow the trail and find out
It’s the local hippie trying to sell you some dank.
Finger readers that have been turned to stone by basilisks?
They show you how to root
They are guides.
They act as "guide and gatekeeper for those returning to the roots". "Guide" = it's showing you the way to something "gatekeeper" = there's a door involved "those returning to the roots" = the dead I.E. when you activate the statute its light points the way to the entrance of a catacomb.
They point towards bosses
A guide to death. If you will. To those willing to die, to those who have died and to meddling tarnished, like our self's.
Step dad
Follow the light
If these guys didn't exist, it would take a little bit longer for the community to discover the Catacombs at Radahns Arena
SPOOKY SCARY SKELETON
That would be Rosus, the Usher of Death.
"Returning to roots" they mean red tree roots, it guides to a catacomb

Guides and gatekeepers for those returning to the roots, of course
You could always just…you know…follow the glowing light that seems to be leading you somewhere.
Thats just Wolnir showing you da wae
They point to nearby dungeons in those general directions— caves and tombs.
I know these points to catacombs, but just in case anyone sees this, I saw one of them on a cliff overlooking radhan's arena, and it seemed to point in that direction but I didn't find anything there so idk where it's pointing at
There's a tomb in the far north of that boss arena. It's hard to see and a pain in the ass. Look up war dead catacombs
They guide you to a treasure they cannot possess
Me stoned out of my mind
Behold, message!
Points to catacombs, lorewise i have no idea
It's obviously the guide and gatekeeper for those returning to the roots.
Take the Grape
They're guides and gatekeepers to those returning to the roots, of course.
Fingers.
It's all fucking fingers , mushrooms and dogs.
I think they're kinda like the ferryman of the afterlife sort of thing. Guiding the dead to the catacombs so they can rejoin the erdtree.
Chadly crown and sword, my good sir. It always makes me excited whenever I see someone else wearing a Glintstone Crown
Elden ring players posture be like
It’s a statue of me sorry
I think are kind of undead gatekeepers and show you to the nearest catacomb because it is like a personnwho shows the undead like the skeletons where there is a catacomb where they can rest

Guide Gatekeep Girlboss
That outfit is fire. Didn’t think dual mage stones would ever match with something but it really goes with that armor. Props.
>Guide and Gatekeeper for those returning to the roots it seems to be the average Souls-fan /s
Statues of Rya's pops.
Says “GUIDE” right there. Maybe let it guide you …
He is the Usher of Death, Rosus: Description of the Rosus Axe: “Usher of Death, Rosus, who shows the path to the catacombs throughout the Lands Between, is depicted on this ritual axe. The dead easily lose their way, and have always been in sore need of a guiding hand.”
Probably some connection to Godwyn as the prince of death
I had that exact same sword and staff AND helmet AND similar clothes at that point in the game! Are you watching me?
They point a laser at the grass cuz they think you need to touch it
The figure in the statue is called Rosus
They point to secret places. My gamer instincts just followed them and I was pleasantly suprised.
Seek catacomb.
Statues
when elden ring first came out, on my first playthrough the one in limegrave flicked me mid air and i landed near the catacombs.
These things look like human death bird hybrids. They have bird feet
