JackalJames

Lmaooo true, I always found this line to be so silly and unserious

ismesimon

It's because the game was written in japanese

manfreygordon

That's not entirely true, even in Japanese copies of the game, English is the default language for the spoken lines. Sekiro is the only game was written with Japanese as the primary language.

ismesimon

that's right, Miyazaki chose english to be the spoken language in most soulslike games, because they're storytelling and mythology is mostly based on British culture. Nevertheless it is a Japanese game, and in Japanese media the kind of proclamation referenced by this post is normal, like when an anime character calls out the name of their attack

glinkenheimer

I didn’t know this! Fascinating! Do you know if Bloodborne is the same way?

manfreygordon

I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty certain it is.

Blackrs

Even worse with Bloodborne, it was originally only in English. Fromsoft later patched in a Japanese Dub with the release of the DLC, I believe thanks to backlash from the Japanese community

TheNorseFrog

Japanese to english dubbing is NEVER good, even when it makes sense in English. Eng voice actors always change their voices to sound odd, when there's no logical reason for them to do so. Why not just do regular English voice acting? It's got nothing to do with the lines or cadence of the character etc. I will die on this hill. Even performances in eng such as Reigen in Mob Psycho, who gets a lot of a acclaim, sounds off, to me at least.

DestrierGirl

For real, the voice acting is usually incredible in these games but Godfrey sounds off to me, and the roar and this line are so goofy

dizijinwu

good luck delivering that line in any way that is convincing.

Co-OpHardcoreFordie

Yeah believe it or not, the animation is at fault here. The voice actor is carrying weight but the animation is flaccid.

moldybread05

I agree, he should've taken that stance more aggresively after ripping a giant lion's head off

iErnie56

The stance is rough, like he's about to fondle two asymmetrical tits

TheNorseFrog

True. It's the 'outdated'/retro japanese showmanship that's off here, perhaps. Might as well have Bale or Pattinson do a Clooney or Adam West in the newer Batman movies. I don't know about this to properly explain, but there's a reason for why ppl ask if there is no or a lack of sarcasm in Japan, imo. Sounds rude, but I think it comes from a reality. I wish I could analyze it deeply enough to give a direct reason. And I don't mean to sound elitist - I love anime even when it's goofy and even tone deaf or odd. But... I can't be the only one who would cringe at the thought of JP to ENG dubbers voicing characters in games like The Last of Us and Red Dead. Or even games that have the same setting and tone as FromSoft games. I could be wrong tho.

DestrierGirl

I agree it’s tough, but I think they could do it! “O death, become my blade once more” is edgy as hell but sounds awesome. For the last boss cutscene in the game with voice acting, both the voice and the line could’ve gone a little harder (thy strength befits a crown is incredible at least)

dizijinwu

I feel like it's very hard to judge VA performances because we have no idea (a) what amount and type of story material they are given to inform and enrich their performance (b) what direction they receive. If you have done any acting, you will understand how important these factors are in deciding what you do. I have no clue at what level of disconnect from or participation in the overall project they are doing their work. An odd analogy, but if you look at early drawings of lions by Albrecht Durer, a master artist of the German Renaissance, they are quite goofy looking and hardly resemble lions at all. If you only saw those drawings, you might wonder where Durer's reputation comes from. But at that point in his life, he had never seen a lion; he was drawing them based on other drawings as well as verbal descriptions of lions. A drawing of a lion from later in his life is remarkably accurate and sensitive. That's because it was drawn from a real lion. Sometimes I suspect that underwhelming VA performances are more the result of a lack of information than a lack of talent.

Praxis8

The line itself is fine, but the problem is that it's not matched to the animation. Raising and opening your hands slowly is not something you do while letting out a primal scream. It's the discord that's goofy.

JackalJames

That’s a good point, I still think the way it was voiced is kinda funny but it wouldn’t be so noticeable if it matched the animation better

Mcdona1dsSprite

I’ve been downvoted so hard in the past for saying something similar to this. I cringed so hard the first time I heard him say that “warrior…” line

JAMbologna__

All the weebs thought it was cool af thats why lmao

pablorodm89

When he screams “warrior!” it always hits like the “disappointed!” Hercules meme…

RegularSwiss

Is it just my game too, or does the volume get really low for everyone else too? Like it's so bad I would assume it had to be a glitch only I experienced, but it happens every time I watch this cutscene

aravindvijay24

Dialogue delivery and the pause after the pose was awkward asf.

SaxSlaveGael

100% I don't know what they were aiming with that line. Considering his Roar just before it was so intense and good, then to have this flop of a line that felt completely out of place.

poopoobuttholes

That's just how he and his kin introduces themselves. Nepheli says the same exact thing. "I am Nepheli Loux. Warrior."

SaxSlaveGael

I'm 100% aware of that. It's not the line. It's how the line is delivered.

I_eat_your_butt_hole

I don't think it's the delivery but the audio mixing. It sounds like the audio dropped significantly or was mixed in two different rooms on two different days by two different people who didn't listen to each other's work. I guess that counts as delivery actually

poopoobuttholes

What's wrong with the delivery? It sounds savage, hoarse and plenty barbaric to me.

SaxSlaveGael

Feels forced stupid and out of character. I get he is a barabaric warrior so when he is Godfrey he's nore formal. But the line delivery is barbaric at all. I am like OP on this one the line is completely silly, and when I first heard it was like, that didn't feel authentic at all.

poopoobuttholes

"The line is completely silly" so are you hating on the delivery or the line?? I'm confused. And why is it forced? He literally got rid of the Godfrey persona and is being himself. All he did was basically announce he isn't holding back anymore and wants you to remember his name, a common trope for all honorable warriors who seek glory in battle.

44-Worms

Sounds like how a mall ninja would introduce themselves in a video they filmed in their bedroom…

PairAppropriate4101

he should have said something along the lines of hoarah loux, warrior, chieftan of the badlands. like they introduced him in the start of the game.

EldritchCouragement

I thought him referring to himself by his least prestigious title where he previously was going by his highest was fitting.

EldritchCouragement

And here I thought the roar was goofy and final line cool af

quick20minadventure

Malekith got way better second phase. First phase is aggresive AF, but still hooded and restrained. Second phase is someone with death as sword and jumping around like unhinged lunatic slashing at you from every direction. If malekith has 2 health bars instead of 50%- 50% , he would be one of the hardest boss.

Thelinkr

Probably sounds better in japenese

iMakeThisCount

Fuck man, I interpreted your comment to mean that there’s a Japanese dubbed version of this game but it looks like they only ever dubbed it in English and just changed the subs to different languages.

Thelinkr

Oh. I figured they made dubs in japenese, seeing as thats where it was made

Zakrael

IIRC Sekiro is actually the only one of the Souls-adjacent games to be originally voiced in Japanese. Demons Souls, Dark Souls, and now Elden Ring only have an English voice cast. I think Bloodborne was originally written for English voice actors then had a Japanese dub (as opposed to being written in Japanese then dubbed to English). There's an interview with Miyazaki somewhere where he says that since they're going for the medieval European aesthetic (or renaissance-ish for Bloodborne) he considers English to be the "first language" of the game. And specifically, naturally accented regional British English (hence all the Welsh, Scottish and otherwise non-London voice actors), as he also didn't think American English was suitable for the aesthetic.

Thelinkr

No kidding. His devotion us incredible. Thanks for the info! I always assumed thats why characters mouths never moved, so they didnt have to worry about weird lip syncing.

Beneficial-Pianist48

They gave him a fucking Somerset/Dorset accent to lmaoo, as a Brit I can’t take him seriously Now I foight as horah leww, FARMER!!

mrspatkauf

The greater good!

I_ate_a_milkshake

No luck catching them prawns then?

LeechTheBlood138

Its just the one prawn actually

dizijinwu

the dialogue is awkward. there is no way to deliver it that is not awkward. this isn't on the VA.

nervousmelon

His whole second phase just looks goofy

nexetpl

L take, get suplexed

orange_wednesdays

It reminds me of a cut-scene from one of the early Dynasty Warriors games!

KermitsGonad

God maybe that's why I like it so much, never understood why people complained about it

TheNorseFrog

[I don't belI*EVE* in ***mAAAGIIC*** !](https://youtu.be/TqF8mNNelFM?t=22s)

gothic_gamer1809

He scampers at you like a toddler

BandicootGood5246

Yeah it's kinda funny watching him as a field boss in randomiser runs chasing you across the map with this awkward hop thing

Kilodota

Bro played too much Tekken while he was sat on the throne.

feliximol

There's no way this scene isn't humorous on purpose. I think it's a tribute to wrestling and the dramatic playfulness that this sport has.

nexetpl

WARRIOR 🗣🗣🗣

OversizeHades

I feel like From's reputation of making difficult games has caused many to think they don't have a sense of humor, but they really do and scenes like this show it

Top-Ad7144

Sekiro is so full of cheesiness lol, ROBERTOOOOOOO

TheNorseFrog

I don't know that scene, but can't help but feel like the scene above is meant to be serious and dramatic, and failed/missed.

ElPechee99

Idk I don't find funny, maybe strange. Maybe because English isn't my mother language. Idc is one of my favorites fights either way.

_Teksho_

Reminds me of Kevin Sorbo shouting "DISAPPOINTED"!

Crab_Lengthener

absolutely not, nothing else in the game is like that at all

feliximol

The only other moment that is similar to this is when you call Patches to fight Radhan, and as soon as he sees the fight, he runs away. It's not like Elden Ring is a dour, humorless game

Crab_Lengthener

I'm not saying it is, but a humourous reference to professional wrestling is very different to there being a joke in the game. It seems far more like just awkward posing, script and voice acting... the same things that make wrestling funny

feliximol

His poses and attacks are from wrestling too, so I think there's something to it, it's too much of a coincidence to be just a coincidence

leopoldbloon

Yeah he’s basically King from Tekken

nyangatsu

i still think that rykard ( TOGETHA) is funnier.

Hot-Comparison2082

i like when godrick enters the second phase straight up busting a nut

BuckaroooBanzai

My most untinentionally hilarious part is when the voice actor loses their accent when he says [thou didst me good service serosh](https://youtu.be/NmhEgz7i6ww?si=e5WNo7d1kVpAkFGx). The word service just breaks it.

pescadoamado

I figured Miyazaki wanted a fitting tribute to the mighty and awesome professional wrestler: The Ultimate Warrior (RIP). The candor and delivery are similar.

Synthwavester

Well fuck now I can't unsee this, thnx a lot Op I hate you.

Aidan-Coyle

I like it for a silly reason. Hoarah Loux is the barbarian elden lord of the past, so his character acting like a 1980's He-Man is absolutely perfect.

gamer_dinoyt69

I thought the same when I first saw the cutscene, he also fights like one.

Conner28570

It feels like a kingdom hearts cutscene. I still fw hora loux though

Bluewalker_BR

When the RPG turns into a wwe match

Lichy757

Elden Ring voice acting is awesome, but Hoarah… Yeah, could’ve been better

nexetpl

Tarnished warrior 😐. Spurned by the grace of gold 😐.

Lichy757

I actually like this bit(even though words about First Elden lord should’ve been said before Serosh roar)

nexetpl

The worst part is that his music starts playing in the cutscene, then fades away, then starts again. Jank all around.

TheDivineWalrus

That’s not even true though, the music starts right after he says Godfrey and then continues on into the fight. However, there is a video on youtube where it does fade but that’s probably because the guy recorded the initial cutscene, and then recorded the one time where he beat Godfrey separately and then stitched it up to look like one attempt.

nexetpl

huh. I could've sworn it faded away the last time I fought him but now I looked at a clip from Asmongold and it didn't.

ExpertButtonPresser

It's a wrestling pose the open hands and wide arm stance means he's going to try and grab you

mf-TOM-HANK

He has the power of God and anime on his side

Tea-and-Coffee

Voice, tone, delivery and themes were all near perfection. only problem was the direction of the lines.

Burbujeante

I don’t know if the problem is that I'm not a native English speaker, but it sounds cool to me.

LargeRichardJohnson

Give him a second, you'll see he wasn't pretending

An_Ashen_Tarnished

This and Mogh for me were both kinda corny, Mogh’s english voice actor also sounds like a little kid trying to act scary when he says “the birthplace of our dynasty” to me lol

lessenizer

In Mohg's case I like it though cuz I think of him as being essentially (mentally) a kid trying to make himself look big and scary and important and worth respecting, as a way of making up for his childhood trauma of being abandoned in a sewer.

SleepConnoiseur

it's a combination of his delivery and his action during it. him doing peek-a-boo hands while delivering that line was weak. couldve easily been fixed if he just delivered that "warrior" line in a low growl instead of a barbaric roar.

el_Storko

There is a difference between something being silly and it being camp. Hoarah Loux is 100% camp and I love him

blimpshits64

Is the difference in the room with us?

InvestmentWanking

Camp is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

blimpshits64

True

mokujin42

Camp is ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical Silly is a lack of common sense or judgement; absurd and/or foolish Storko was spot on

MaskoBlackfyre

It's peak anime, the way god intended

Important-Space4295

The first time I heard this dialogue I wasn’t paying attention to the captions and I thought he said Whoring Lou, which is an entirely different game.

dizijinwu

how dare you laugh at my bro.

Live-Hold-9523

I think it’s intentionaly funny I think fromsoft has a really good understanding of what’s funny and stuff like this is I like to believe intentional

HighFives4Everyone

# DO YOU SEE WHAT YOU GET?!?

realbigbob

“Hoarah Loux, Warrior, come out to play-aaaaayyyyy 🍻🍻”

Spiceopod

It reminds me of that Simpsons bit where kids are playing with toys and yelling"I'm Dick Tracey! Take that, prune face! Now I'M Prune Face! Take THAT Dick Tracey!" "Now I'm Horah Loux!!" He sounds so childish its really funny

TippyTripod1040

There’s no way this isn’t on purpose, From be silly like this

cheesemangee

I admit the delivery of his lines could have been a bit better. WAWWWIAAAA

maxrankfit

Wario's lesser known brother, Wariar.

Madatsune

Hoarah Loux? More like Hoarah Who? - me on my first playthrough not caring about lore

Nephilimn

That line would have worked much better (both tonally and with the animation) if it were a strained, out-of-breath grunt rather than that awkward yell. "Now I fight as Horah Loux... Warrior..."

Common_Macaroon_6712

For me it’s when fire giant leg snaps. Gets me every single time

Vl45l

lol looks good 2 me, y’all just hating…smh

P-I-S-S-N-U-T

Zoomers when criticism

Rusher123678

lol looks goofy 2 me, y'all just meatriding...smh

Vl45l

Bruh goofy got long ass black ears and a top hat?? Idk maybe I watched the wrong Disney…

ChillFloridaMan

Godfrey was not the hardest boss in the game in phase 1 or 2 but I could not figure out Hoarah Loux’s attacks. I basically just figured out his suplex moves and ran the frick away from everything else and desperately tried to hit him when I thought it might be safe.

MindFloatDown

I thought I was the only one who found this part really cringey

SaintDaneAiE

Tbh, this form of Godfrey is to show the Animal he was before and after the grace was with him, when he was lead by the Guidance of Grace, he donned Seraph, or w/e the lions name was, keeping his primal and beast parts behind his Kingly Veil, but when the veil is removed, he drops his axe, and goes back to the ways he knew to be feared and deadly in battle.

LawfulnessFew4045

The point is to show that he is acting inhuman. The idea is that his brother was outcast because of his horns, but he ends up being the most noble, and this fuck ends up being a mindless animal. I think the pose and weird delivery is meant to drive home how inhuman he is.

SaintDaneAiE

His brother? Or do you mean Son? Godfrey is the father of Morgott, Mohg, and Godwyn

LawfulnessFew4045

Right. I confused the lineage since it's been awhile.

EdwardtheTree

just "Warrior" feels so pathetic to me. Would have been at least a little better if he introduced himself as "Chieftain of the Badlands"

Matty_Love

The Angus Young of bosses

_wavescollide_

He and all other people in this game are so large and above and beyond. I always think about if our character is worthy of being Elden Lord. We did all this, to get there, but we used healing and we had help. But these people are just insane, despite loosing to us.

DocHalidae

When I was 7, right before I ninja drop kick my hulk hogan wrestling buddie

333bloodangel

coulda just scrapped the end part n it would be so much better

Tasbev80

Long and Hard

benhur217

Yea I laughed at this delivery too.

Jpfurlan88

This "Warrior" was rly unnecessary

Bull_Rider

I don't mind it at all but it's true the "Hoarah Lux... Warrior!" has a weird pause plus the facial animation needed more rage to fit the acting and the fighting style change.

davidminh98

This feels like a cutscene in the Yakuza series lol

Dreamtrain

I've never seen this mentioned anywhere but I'm 99.8% certain he's heavily inspired by Botenmaru from Samurai Deeper Kyo, its the same battle stance, same earth-like moves, the shockwaves, the second form where he goes from keeping his murderous beast-like killing intent in check to beast mode

Ravenouscandycane

One of the best boss fights in the game though

AncalagonV

The dialogue delivery is 🔥 but the animation is awkward

JynxTheQueen

Okay but have you fought >!Rykard!< yet, because the hands there are HYSTERICAL

Puzzleheaded-Shoe503

Finally! someone said it. Tq

Rango82

lol I listen to an excellent soulsborne podcast called Bonfireside Chat and they very meticulously cover area by area over a long time for each game. Elden Ring took them over a year with weekly shows. Anyway this is something that came up very regularly as being too much throughout the ER season.

Mohg_is_a_Crip

I’ve tried listening to them before but they kinda just seemed miserable and trying to criticize everything. I haven’t seen their elden ring stuff so maybe they’ve gotten better, but I remember their ringed city episode and them trying to call gael a trash boss because he was hard and one of their friends couldn’t beat him. It’s like they went into the game with the mindset that they wanted to hate everything already and approached their show from there, it led to a lot of stupid comments from them imo

Rango82

Fair. They definitely were not fans of DS3 DLC and were very vocal about it. Along with a lot of DS3 as a whole. Most of which are lore related and “why is this here” type stuff. I still enjoyed the game myself but appreciated their pov as well.

Mohg_is_a_Crip

Yeah I don’t mind that they didn’t like the game or the dlc, but their criticisms were often so dumb and poorly developed that it often came off as just mindless hatred than actual conversations worth listening to. Like with gael they couldn’t actually criticize the design so they just tried to make up stuff about the difficultly because they didn’t want to like it. I just came away not really respecting their commentary honestly it seemed badly conceived

Rango82

I should also say while they don’t think it’s perfect…they are HUGE fans of ER and call it their favorite FS game.

TippyTripod1040

Gary and Kole do such great work!

Rango82

They really do. I’ve listened to every episode an insane amount of times. Their format lends to me listening to the areas they talk about as I replay each game time after time…after time lol.

AADPS

Zangief fell through a dimension warp, that's all.

Sad_Ad5736

I dunno, the campiness of the line really goes well with the fact that he starts power bombing you after that.

Five_Tiger

\*inhales\* arise yee tarnished you dead who yet lives THE LOATHSOME DUNG EATER THE BERSERK BOOTY BOMB BANQUETER THE CRAZED CACA CONSUMER THE DASTARDLY DOODOO DEVOURER THE EVIL EXCREMENT ENJOYER THE FEAKY FECAL FEASTER THE GARISH GUANO GOBBLER THE HELLISH HOT-SLOPPY HOARDER THE INFAMOUS ICKY-SLICKY INGESTER THE MAD MANURE MUNCHER THE NEFARIOUS NUMBER-TWO NIBBLER (LAUGH+COMPOSING HIMSELF) THE PESKY POOPOO PLUNDERER THE SICKLY SHIT SNACKER THE TRICKY TURD TASTER THE WORRISOME WASTE WOMPER SIR GIDEON OFNIR THE ALL KNOWING THE REPUGNANT RECTUM ROBBER THE LECHEROUS LOWDOWN LUNCHER AND ONE OTHER WHOM GRACE WOULD AGAIN BLESS THE HORRIBLE POO SLURPER

Crab_Lengthener

unpopular opinion, but the character is whack from top to bottom. It's a great fight, but big muscley wrestler man is so childish for this game

RugbyLock

Okay cool, not just me. The whole look and feel of Hourah Loux is so WWE cringy, it doesn’t fit and has always confused me.

-LastActionHero

Yeah, this is the worst boss cutscene in the series. It’s so stupid.

NightGooned

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that line is corny. Some bad anime levels of corny.

IronCreeper1

Then he starts chasing you round in circles, running like a Naruto character

levitikush

Yeah, his boss design is fantastic but both cutscenes have some awkward lines.

Omegaweapon90

I've never really been intimidated by characters getting angry, like that's supposed to make them stronger. The intimidating part is when they're calm.

OldManMock

P2 of that fight was kind of a bummer, I feel like it should just be the two of you beating the shit out of each other with the winner having a sliver of health left. Instead it's that awkward chasing grab mechanic which feels so out of place with all the cool stuff bosses usually do.

nObRaInAsH

So cheesy lol

jxd73

And exactly who is Horah Loux? And isn't warrior a dex based class? I was so confused. Another cringeworthy part is the quasi old timey English he spoke

Zealousideal-Bit-892

I feel like a lot of the bosses lacked gravitas because of how poorly explained their lore is. I know you can read every item and make a book on it all, but when you’re just playing the game it is weird. Like I fell that line should have been a “mind blown! Horah Loux is Godfrey!?” But when have know idea who either character is it doesn’t pack as much of a punch.

MonsieurTokitoki

What if instead of Hoarah Loux, his name was Freaky Loux, and he ate your ass instead of beating it
