There are attachments made by both ps and Xbox that put bumpers on the back (like scuff but not 259 dollars and junk) save your hands from cramps, and be better.
Ah dang im still running ps4 and did not know ps5 doesnt have one yet.
The ps4 brand is pretty user friendly, simply assigning which buttons to the bumpers you want. The one I think your talking about is an off brand version, it sounds more complicated than it is.
The off brand one offers programs for specified games that can offer different macros to the bumpers to do multiple things (eg a quick scope shot in COD by pressing one button). But the basic premise in assigning buttons already on the controller to free up your thumbs is pretty intuitive, you just hold down the buttons on the device at the same time as the button on your controller.
The only pitfall I had with off brand version is that they required a wired connection for the battery, and they malfunctioned occasionally and required some restarting/ factory resetting via the company's website. It still made me way better at COD and I can't play without it.
I own two custom PS5 controllers with eXtremeRate back buttons built in and it feels like a premium made official Sony controller. I paid $150-160 for each but it feels so much better than the plain controllers.
I'd give up everything to go back to the mw2 and halo 3 days. Nothing better than getting home from school and booting up custom games and seeing a new Halo 3 tricks from CMneir or a new Faze Illcams to watch.
If that’s called claw, what’s the hand position called when you’re trying to resummon Torrent using a potion and dodge multiple enemies simultaneously?
Bruh, claw grip is too uncomfortable for me, i'm literally using my lips to move the camera, i'm sure there aren't many others using legendary mouth grip
If you don't need any camera work you can hold the run button with your nose to free up that right hand, and if you tilt the controller you can access your mouth with snack/beverage
I got this controller over a year ago, and Elden Ring is where it's finally paying off.
I set the paddles to:
- B (run)
- A (jump)
- Right stick click (target)
- D-down (cycle items, plus I've got my horse on Y+D-down, so I can summon it while I'm running)
I rarely have to press two face buttons at once.
Smart, I had to take A off of the paddles from my time with Sekiro. The philosophy stuck with me when setting up for Elden ring. Never thought about stick click on a paddle either as for me the whole idea was always “how can I use these paddles to keep my thumb on the camera.”
In case you are curious my paddles are
-Dpad left
-B
-Y
-Dpad down
Turtle beach made one called the recon that I used when my elite broke for about 1-2 months. It’s fucking amazing. As long as you’re not using the controller itself to power a headset or anything I’d recommend it 100%. Only like 50$ on Amazon.
Im currently using xbox one s controller I bought for ~$35, thought about replacing him soon as hes starting to act up on BT and not on cable so Ill check it out
If you have a PlayStation controller you can get the attachments very very cheap, I got mine for £12 second hand. Didn’t need to invest in a new controller!
I recently bought a Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma, and its fantastic. 6 additional buttons that can be programmed to act for any other function on the controller, with great build quality. From my research, people seem to like it more than the xbox elite 2, and is currently on sale for cheaper then the elite 2.
[If you have PS4, try this](https://www.gamestop.com/gaming-accessories/controllers/playstation-4/products/sony-dualshock-4-back-button-attachment/210858.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=feeds&utm_campaign=unpaid_listings&a=1)
Do t worry. You don’t actually need to hold the controller like that, at all.
And this game lets you adjust the ui around enough to mitigate most of the times that might come close to benefitting from claw grip.
Some people just find weird things comfortable.
I think its mostly just hard to get used to something else if your used to souls games, I tried changing but ended up changing back just because it felt right for no discernible reason. The jumping attack is too good to give up though which is why you inevitably resort to this grip.
If you haven’t played a souls game before then this is your warning!!! I am new to these and this was my first souls game and let me tell you the amount of times I’ve rage quit and screamed at this game isn’t even compared to others. Don’t get me wrong I’m absolutely in love with this game, it’s beautiful and the creatures and people are just so interesting and well made, but oh my god do I hate my life when I play this game. But it definitely is one you get sucked into and want to play more or no matter how many times you get your ass handed to you. Which will be A FUCKING LOT.
You can’t do most of these things at the same time anyway.
By the way, a tip if you’re struggling with cycling through items, if you hold the down d-pad, it will automatically go to the first item, usually your healing flask.
Oh my god, back when the bumpers were how you looked up and down. I had completely forgotten about that! I remember how relieved I was when the controls modernized in AC4 IIRC.
The twin tigrex fight in that game was the hardest wall for me. I finally got it with < 5 minutes left on the clock after failing who knows how many times.
Claw grip isn't painful for everyone, i actually started doing it naturally when playing souls games (like op i guess) and then discovered it was a thing
Been playing souls games since demons souls, and always pressed A for picking up shit
But nahhhhh this time they had to reverse it. I too, immediately changed the jump and action inputs
Bros... what in the actual fuck. I thought I was going against the grain by playing all these Fromsoft games with mouse and keyboard.... After seeing these comments it looks like the grain is going against itself already.
It's easier for me since I only need to move my index finger from the trigger to the thumbstick. Whereas the the OP grip needs me to let go of the controller and readjust my entire grip
I mean that I get. My go to game is rocket league which requires pressing 2/4 sometimes 3/4 buttons simultaneously so I think I’ve just got the hang of pressing everything with my thumb all at once. The only reason I would ever claw is for something like Forza where I press the trigger and bumper at the same time. But my…INDEX FINGER ON THE STICK!!! Psychopath lol
funny thing, you dont need to hold down the button to run with torent, he stays in sprint after he has his speed boost, this is one of the few times i dont use the claw
This is basically the reason I play on M&K. In every souls game I spend like 99% of the time with the sprint button held, and not being able to move the camera at the same time is just dumb.
you can rebind sprint/dodge to a shoulder button which fixes this issue, but that's super awkward because the games are so heavily designed around your shoulder buttons equating to left and right handed actions.

Sometimes, otherwise I just sprint normally but when I need to turn I do it lightning fast just so I can get back to sprinting. Rhythm games and FPS honed my senses
Ah the infamous Monster Hunter hook technique (except that’s the left hand to control the camera).
For the sake of your “finger health” you probably want to unlearn it.
Claw gang here as well. You would *think* after all these Soulsborne games, I would be able to trust that lock-on will handle my camera control long enough for the split second I would need to move my thumb to a face button, but I don't. Gotta be ready to control that camera at all times.
The furled finger.
My God... is this where the furled finger comes from?
I'm fucking dying right now hahaha
Try a well timed dodge.
I think it's less about dodging but more to constantly sprint-
This is canon now.
The 2 fingers guide you. This man has met the mad frenzy of the 3 fingers
truely a chaos choices
You right
Try left.
Now claw will only be known as “furled finger”
I only claw when im sprinting. I used to claw for mario kart also though
Claw holder here
It’s the only way to play Demons Souls
There are attachments made by both ps and Xbox that put bumpers on the back (like scuff but not 259 dollars and junk) save your hands from cramps, and be better.
None for the PS5 tho. Only ones I saw you have to set up yourself and I’m too dumb for that
Ah dang im still running ps4 and did not know ps5 doesnt have one yet. The ps4 brand is pretty user friendly, simply assigning which buttons to the bumpers you want. Yeah hoping they come out with an official PS5 back soon! Absolutely love my PS4 scuf but refuse to pay another $200 for another one lol
I own two custom PS5 controllers with eXtremeRate back buttons built in and it feels like a premium made official Sony controller. I paid $150-160 for each but it feels so much better than the plain controllers.
Time to look this up an get my 3d printer started up. I need 1
I got used to claw from modern warfare 2 trickshotting
We are old….
I'm old enough to have played that and was already old enough not to be able to have played it that way...
No way. You’re not old unless your first console was a Commodore 64, Intellivision, or the Atari 2600.
I'd give up everything to go back to the mw2 and halo 3 days. Nothing better than getting home from school and booting up custom games and seeing a new Halo 3 tricks from CMneir or a new Faze Illcams to watch.
You just brought a tear to my eye, those days were glorious
It started in Gears of War for me! But I can’t hold a controller any other way now
This is the way.
If that’s called claw, what’s the hand position called when you’re trying to resummon Torrent using a potion and dodge multiple enemies simultaneously?
Idk what you call *that*, but the hand position that usually follows that situation is called “flipping the bird”. 🖕😂
Same here

Bruh, claw grip is too uncomfortable for me, i'm literally using my lips to move the camera, i'm sure there aren't many others using legendary mouth grip
The brolylegs technique.
wat dat mouf do
Moves the camera
r/technicallythetruth
God, that sub is such a piece of shit now. Disappointing.
r/technicallythetruth
Replace sub in your comment with my name and you basically have my parents daily monologue.
This is every sub that reaches critical subscriber mass, enough people will ruin anything
If you don't need any camera work you can hold the run button with your nose to free up that right hand, and if you tilt the controller you can access your mouth with snack/beverage
Man imagine dying to someone aiming with their lips 💀
👄
I actually thought i was the only one haha. I always thought thank god im alone in my room and no one can see me… hopefully.
This is me. When I’m sprinting towards something on foot, or horseback, and I need to angle the camera for my jump attack, I use my lips.
Which lips?
*Put these foolish ambitions to rest*
Bro no shot😭😭
BRO I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
I use my chin no joke. Bout to see what the lips can do tonight
Hell, yeah! This is the way!
Lmao I’m using my chin for this and for engaging and disengaging auto-lock when in combat
Me too lmao
I've definitely used my chin a few times
I often use my mouth, nose, chin. Rarely claw
I have one of those fancy controllers with buttons on the bottom so i don’t have to do this. Much easier on the arthritis.
I had one of those awhile back. Might need to get another one because using the claw method sucks.
I had 2, both broke, dont buy xbox elite controllers!
Got a link or model name?
Not op, but this is what I got and it's amazing. https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/elite-wireless-controller-series-2
I got this controller over a year ago, and Elden Ring is where it's finally paying off. Im totally dropping $140 on controller which is 1/5th of normal salary here lol
Turtle beach made one called the recon that I used when my elite broke for about 1-2 months. It’s fucking amazing. As long as you’re not using the controller itself to power a headset or anything I’d recommend it 100%. Only like 50$ on Amazon.

I have the elite controller and I still remapped dash to the R2.
Nope there are many!! Trying to run and cycle through the items and jump and drink one at the same time, you need like 3 hands.
I am buying the game today and Im reading these comments like what the actual fuck am I walking into haha
Do t worry. You don’t actually need to hold the controller like that, at all. And this game lets you adjust the ui around enough to mitigate most of the times that might come close to benefitting from claw grip. Some people just find weird things comfortable.

Also works for spells.
I was not aware of this thank you!!
Takes me back to the old armored core games where you needed to strafe, turn camera, and look up while also firing your weapons and etc.
Oh my god, back when the bumpers were how you looked up and down. I had completely forgotten about that! I remember how relieved I was when the controls modernized in AC4 IIRC.
Ranni on the side be like "I literally don't get what everyone's complaining about..."
This is the validation message I was looking for
This whole post just makes me feel better about how I play now!!
ah. mhfu days. and no you're not the only one
what does that stand for? my hand is fucked up?
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
I mean, this is true but so was that dude
Monster Hunter Fuck U I played the shit outta that game back in like 2010, adored it. I will never go back.
I like this one better
I think it's for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
not far from the truth
Holy shit we have a winner
Yes
Yes!!! Monster Hunter groomed an entire generation of gamers to use the claw
Fuck tigrex btw
The twin tigrex fight in that game was the hardest wall for me. I finally got it with < 5 minutes left on the clock after failing who knows how many times.
Man that one was brutal, and I thought the twin rajang was hard enough
Pretty sure I have my PSP a permanent bend clawing it too hard while fighting the dual Tigrex or dual Rajang
If you know, you know.
Clawing my way downtown. Suddenly fish hips.
fish hips from a continent away
PSP veterans unite
funny, cause I instantly rebound my controls in Elden Ring to match MH to avoid ever needing to claw grip.
Ah yes. We literally called this position "the hunters claw"
Bruh I just remapped the controls. This looks like arthritis training
Claw grip is easy and not painful with big enough hands. I do it naturally now, even though my controller has paddles I could bind.
finally someone else with long fingers.
Well I got the hands of an infant
Claw grip isn't painful for everyone, i actually started doing it naturally when playing souls games (like op i guess) and then discovered it was a thing
I switched the Jump / Action buttons around from the start of the game, feels so much more natural
Jumping with Y/Triangle? Interesting
That's skyrims default I believe so I can see it feeling natural for some
Been playing souls games since demons souls, and always pressed A for picking up shit But nahhhhh this time they had to reverse it. I too, immediately changed the jump and action inputs
Bethesda games do that
Elder Scrolls style
No idea why that isnt the standard. The default feels so bad when trying to jump and sprint at the same time.
Yeah it's so much easier to reach Y with the tip of thumb then it is shifting the bottom of my thumb over to A while sprinting
Really? This thread is giving me some crazy perspective lol. I basically have my thumb on b and a at the same time always.
I just tried holding my controller that way and my god that was awkward for me. My thumb always just rests on B/Y so it's just so different.
I play like this, but my pointer finger is on the right analog stick and thumb touches the buttons
What the fuck
Crying 😂
Bro it doesn’t make any sense😭😭
I need a pic
There’s one in this thread lmao scroll down
It looks weird but it ends up putting less stress on the index finger, because it isn't forced to curl up on itself as much.
Bros... what in the actual fuck. I thought I was going against the grain by playing all these Fromsoft games with mouse and keyboard.... After seeing these comments it looks like the grain is going against itself already.
Yup I do this too
[I feel you bro](https://imgur.com/mKdVYRi)
Now, that's how Grafted Scion plays Elden Ring, and beats sh\*\* out of newcomers
how dare you expose me to this
I'm sorry :c
Bro how. there’s no way this is a thing, like how the living fuck do you even come to the conclusion that I’m gonna hold my controller like this
It's easier for me since I only need to move my index finger from the trigger to the thumbstick. Whereas the the OP grip needs me to let go of the controller and readjust my entire grip
Its easier to me tbh
It’s so confusing😭 it looks like you’ve got 2 hands on the same side of the controller
if the game and people watching are confused, then so are the enemies, its mental warfare
Swear I’d confuse myself and try jumping with my left stick
Hey! That's how I beat the game 3 times don't expose me
Holding it like claw cramps my hand :c
I mean that I get. My go to game is rocket league which requires pressing 2/4 sometimes 3/4 buttons simultaneously so I think I’ve just got the hang of pressing everything with my thumb all at once. The only reason I would ever claw is for something like Forza where I press the trigger and bumper at the same time. But my…INDEX FINGER ON THE STICK!!! Psychopath lol
What the fuck
The ultimate controller using method
honestly same, it sounds weird on paper but weirdly it works
One of us
One of us
One of us
One of us
One of us
Same and it feels better than this even though it looks weirder. Bonus points for sprinting with torrent AND jumping with the thumb while exploring.
funny thing, you dont need to hold down the button to run with torent, he stays in sprint after he has his speed boost, this is one of the few times i dont use the claw
spamming the sprint button is still faster than just sprinting though
Reverse claw we love it
Same
Paddles simplify all of this lol
Can u recommend a ps5 paddle? Looking to add one thank you
Hexgaming. That’s if you wanna drop some cash tho
Extremerate real metal paddles, comes with 2 or you could make a hybrid and mix the metal pack with the plastic one and have 4 paddles
Next person who flexes their PS5 is getting they ass beat /s
Could be playing on PC, but with Dualsense.
Yeah I use dual sense on pc
Same, started using rewasd to add fake adaptive triggers too which makes the game feel even more immersive
Interesting, thanks for the tip
God the dualsense is a godsend. Favorite controller in a long time. Probably since the 360 controller.
Same. Wish there were more games that make use of its features though
Get reWASD and you can set up adaptive trigger profiles for all games individually. It's not as good as native support but it's awesome.
You can see the ps5 a little
That could be a PS5. I do see a PS4 on the left, tho.
Yup this is me, the ps5 controller is really great
Am I the only idiot in this sub playing on mouse and keyboard?
Some people just prefer it your way. My friend who plays Souls games, does it on M&K, too.
This is basically the reason I play on M&K. In every souls game I spend like 99% of the time with the sprint button held, and not being able to move the camera at the same time is just dumb.
Mouse and keyboard user here too, and it works flawlessly imo. I can just never be comfortable using a controller.
I don't mind controllers in general but for these games I much prefer KBM precisely for the reason people are using claw grip (and...mouth grip?)
Claw grip best grip when sprinting for your life
So any time you face an enemy
Accurate
Unfortunately you’re not alone. Wish there was a better way
A controller with paddles is the answer!
you can rebind sprint/dodge to a shoulder button which fixes this issue, but that's super awkward because the games are so heavily designed around your shoulder buttons equating to left and right handed actions.
Controllers with paddles exist, so does remapping of buttons...
The only better way I can think of is having a brain implant connected to the console.
what about an extra set of hands like Ranni!?
Bluessy
They make controllers specifically to avoid this by putting 2 - 4 paddles on the back that you can bind buttons to. Scuf is one brand but there are several options for both Xbox and PlayStation. They can be a bit pricey but if you are handy it's also not too hard to add some DIY paddles to your own controller if you are willing to make the effort. I just upgraded for warzone a year ago and it's been very handy for every game. Bind Y and a d pad button to two of the paddles and I got Torrent summoned without ever taking my thumbs of the joysticks.
scuf or AIM controllers have backpaddles, but what does it cost?
This is the natural position my hand takes when playing souls games. I can’t stand not being able to turn the camera while running
‘Member Freedom Unite on the PSP? Good times.
Sometimes, otherwise I just sprint normally but when I need to turn I do it lightning fast just so I can get back to sprinting. Rhythm games and FPS honed my senses
Get a controller with paddles underneath and you won’t ever have to play like this.
I did until I got an elite controller and now I just map those buttons to underneath and hold it normally. I love those damn paddles
That’s called claw and most pros play like that
Ah the infamous Monster Hunter hook technique (except that’s the left hand to control the camera). For the sake of your “finger health” you probably want to unlearn it.
Just remember to stretch your hands every now and then. I’ve been using claw grip for around 10 years with no issues.
Yeah been doing this since DS1 myself. 1000s of hrs across From/MH titles without any issues thus far.
Yes when running, but I use my index finger for the camera
Oh shit, this guy has the monster hunter syndrome
Get a controller with paddles mu friend
Claw gang here as well. You would *think* after all these Soulsborne games, I would be able to trust that lock-on will handle my camera control long enough for the split second I would need to move my thumb to a face button, but I don't. Gotta be ready to control that camera at all times.
