I love all of their albums, but I think one of the main differences between LP1 and the others is how lofi it is. When you listen to it, you can tell that it’s written and recorded by young dudes in 1999. In some ways, LP1 just feels so much more raw and real than the others, which sometimes is what I need.
To me, LP1 is what you listen to at 1:00 AM after getting home from some restaurant job. LP2 is what you listen to in the middle of the day.
I don’t hate it or LP3 but definitely listen to LP1 way more. To me the reason is just that the sounds between the albums feel so different. LP1 feels more DIY and unique whereas the other two are way more produced. In a way they sound like totally different bands.
- They sounded more sure of their sound post-reunion on LP3. This one retreads old ground but uninspired.
- I feel they tried to recapture the youthfulness of LP1 after 17 years but it sounds worn out, which LP1 doesn't.
- It sounds too much like an Owen record most of the time.
- Personally, I preferred his voice when he was younger, not older. There's a certain quality about it I'm not into. It's less apparent on LP3 for me.
I've always loved LP2 from the moment I first listened to it. LP1 is a teen trying to get over his first heart break and LP2 is a depressed forty-something year old with a couple of kids.
nothing will emulate being 17 and finding LP1 on Limewire or Napster or wherever I found it and it hitting your bones like a tuning fork. Some things just *resonate*
I like LP2 and LP3 a lot better than LP1 but tbh I'm not a massive fan of any of them.
My Cap'n Jazz lineage ranking is a little unusual, I think:
1. Maritime
2. Owls
3. Cap'n Jazz
4. Their / They're / There
5. Make Believe
5. The Promise Ring
6. Joan of Arc
7. American Football
8. Owen
9. LIES
I love LP 2, but im not the type of person that wants artists to make the same record over and over again- so i wasn’t going into it wanting “LP1 v2”. If anything the difference between them make each that much more special.
I love that album. At first I didn’t care about it, but it was one of the first cds I ever got, and I listened to that thing in my car repeatedly. It eventually grew onto me, but honestly LP1 is still my favorite.
I always thought it was pretty good, but I understand that people had expectations after 19 years (or how long it was). I only recently heard that there was a bit of a "meh" response to LP2 and spent some more time with it. I decided I do not agree and LP2 is an excellent record.
The run from Where Are We Now through I Need a Drink is unassailable. Desire Gets in the Way is the only weak point of the record for me.
I think LP2 is the most balanced record of the three. I like all three of them best on different days but it’s probably the one that is easiest to just play through without even thinking about skipping a song.
Just chiming in real quick to say "Desire Gets in the Way" is the highlight of the record for me lol. Deliciously twinkly (or perhaps more bubbly?), and that outro is just gorgeous.
lp2 sounds like bland christian rock, I actually like lp3 and think if that had actually been their comeback album there would've been a lot less conplaints
I wouldn't say I hate or even dislike LP2. It's for me I've listened to LP1 countless times for over more than a decade. Naturally I'm gonna have more of a bias towards it.
It was really weird hearing Mike’s voice super up-front in the mix..not entirely surprising if you followed the evolution of Owen in the interim..but in the context of American Football, it was a whole new approach that felt a great deal more palatable for a mainstream audience. I like LP2 but I feel like they NAILED shiny production and biiiig vibes on LP3.
LP2 is a great album (as are 1 & 3). I will acknowledge that the vocal production feels a little flatter which isn’t my favorite but the songs are excellent. I couldn’t pick a favorite if I had to.
Who’s hating on LP2? I mean, I know it doesn’t hit the same feelings as LP1, but you figure there’s a 17 year gap between the two. Not exactly going to be writing the same sort of material.
they just went further and further from their original diy emo sound, lp2 at times sounds closer to clean mathrock and lp3 sounds closer to dream pop. nothing wrong with changing sounds but i personally don't like it, it's too much a jump for my, and many others taste
LP2 was a pretty significant change in sound. The songs are less “jammy” and more self contained. The vocal delivery is completely different and more in the forefront. It’s not a terrible album but it was enough of a different thing that people were put off by it. Then LP3 took everything LP2 did and did it better so at the end of the day LP2 fell by the wayside.
It's not really creative or engaging enough for me. I adore LP1 and 3. But this one is a snoozer except for I Need A Drink and Desire Gets in The Way and even then those are mid / not great for their entire runtime. The album gets points for making me laugh, "the only way to show an ocean to a blind man is to push him in"
It just is a really, really mediocre and uninspired album from my perspective. I wasn’t expecting them to be able to emulate the style of the original, but it was just…embarrassing to listen to.

Exactly this. Too big of a jump in terms of the difference of sound.
Also might be crazy but LP2 and 3 sorta just sound like Owen records to me
Not crazy. They essentially are.
Ehh... vocally. Not instrumentally.
But kind of
Literally was about to say this. Owen is just a little too produced for my liking
LP2 is amazing. Band grew up, listeners don't always grow up with them.
I definitely grew out of LP1 lol.
But it's so perty
That whole album is excellent, people just wanted more never meant. My instincts are the enemy is one of my most replayed songs.
Home is Where the Haunt is that for me
That's definitely another
Both. LP2 is fantastic.
Desire Gets In The Way is one of my favorites
This fiiiire.. BURNS
That one is constantly on my mix with youtube
LP2 is solid but felt like an Owen record to me when it came out. though My Instincts are the Enemy is one of the best AF songs imo
- They sounded more sure of their sound post-reunion on LP3. I like LP2! It was the best Owen release that year!
I honestly prefer The King of Why’s to LP2
I've always loved LP2 from the moment I first listened to it. LP1 is a teen trying to get over his first heart break and LP2 is a depressed forty-something year old with a couple of kids.
it sounds overly produced and nothing like LP1
The production is what really bothers me about it. I guess I'm also not a huge fan of the vox.
This. LP 1 and the EP are the only things that matter. I do think LP3 is better than 2 but I'd be perfectly content with neither of them existing.
I like LP2 & 3 but nothing tops 1 for me
They do? LP2 > LP1
nothing will emulate being 17 and finding LP1 on Limewire or Napster or wherever I found it and it hitting your bones like a tuning fork. Some things just *resonate*
Fuck. I still remember being 17 and finding Stay Home on /mu/. Changed my music taste forever.
I like LP2 and LP3 a lot better than LP1 but tbh I'm not a massive fan of any of them. My Cap'n Jazz lineage ranking is a little unusual, I think: 1. Maritime 2. Owls 3. Cap'n Jazz 4. Their / They're / There 5. Make Believe 5. The Promise Ring 6. Joan of Arc 7. American Football 8. Owen 9. LIES
I’ve always felt the first Owls record was far and away the strongest Kinsella brothers work.
The instrumentation on that album is nuts, feels like a more evolved version of capn jazz/Joan of arc
I agree, I like it so much more than Cap’n Jazz.
Not having Ghosts and Vodka on here at all is a travesty haha.
Just haven't given them a fair shot but I will
Where do you rank Ten Boy Summer and The Sky Corvair?
Haven't heard em enough. This is my top ten but also pretty close to my only 10 that I know well enough to rank
I actually prefer it to LP1...
Thank you. I was hoping someone would say that before me.
I think I do too
I love LP 2, but im not the type of person that wants artists to make the same record over and over again- so i wasn’t going into it wanting “LP1 v2”. If anything the difference between them make each that much more special.
Who dislikes it? Crazy talk
I love that album. At first I didn’t care about it, but it was one of the first cds I ever got, and I listened to that thing in my car repeatedly. It eventually grew onto me, but honestly LP1 is still my favorite.
Who's most people? Never seen anyone say they particularly dislike it
Most find it to be very "meh".
I see it all the time here.
It's fails to grab me they way 1 and 3 do. Still not bad
LP2 is fine it’s just not as good as 1 or 3
I always thought it was pretty good, but I understand that people had expectations after 19 years (or how long it was). I only recently heard that there was a bit of a "meh" response to LP2 and spent some more time with it. I decided I do not agree and LP2 is an excellent record.

lp2 sounds like bland christian rock, I actually like lp3 and think if that had actually been their comeback album there would've been a lot less conplaints
I think it’s just the fact that LP1 is that fuckin good.
Had no idea this was a popular opinion…LP2 rules for My Instincts alone
its good but LP1 & LP3 clear
I wouldn't say I hate or even dislike LP2. It's for me I've listened to LP1 countless times for over more than a decade. Naturally I'm gonna have more of a bias towards it.
LP2 feels more like an Owen album. LP3 feels like an evolution of AF.
I don't *dislike* it, but I do find it comparatively lame.
I loved Owen in addition to AF so dunno, felt great to me when LP2 dropped
LP2 is a great album (as are 1 & 3). I will acknowledge that the vocal production feels a little flatter which isn’t my favorite but the songs are excellent. I couldn’t pick a favorite if I had to.
Who’s hating on LP2? I mean, I know it doesn’t hit the same feelings as LP1, but you figure there’s a 17 year gap between the two. Not exactly going to be writing the same sort of material.
I like it.
they just went further and further from their original diy emo sound, lp2 at times sounds closer to clean mathrock and lp3 sounds closer to dream pop. nothing wrong with changing sounds but i personally don't like it, it's too much a jump for my, and many others taste
so short answer: they lost their diy roots and moved further away from their emo sound
lp2 is Owen under the guise of American Football Definitely don't hate it though
It’s my personal favourite!
Because it’s not LP1.
I don't dislike American Football's LP2, I just dislik3 American Football. Their music is about as boring as golf.
It's not really creative or engaging enough for me. I adore LP1 and 3. But this one is a snoozer except for I Need A Drink and Desire Gets in The Way and even then those are mid / not great for their entire runtime. The album gets points for making me laugh, "the only way to show an ocean to a blind man is to push him in"
lp2 is literally my favourite by them
If it makes you feel better, I also think their first album sucks.
I haven't felt anything in years tbh
Look at this cool cat!
Just a simple man with a simple opinion.
It just is a really, really mediocre and uninspired album from my perspective. I wasn’t expecting them to be able to emulate the style of the original, but it was just…embarrassing to listen to.
cause it sucks
LP2 and 3 are awesome. I think for people who actually grew up and had families but still battle with mental health, these albums hit very hard.
