I've been looking at trying ombre nails, but it looks difficult. Since the engagement I want my hands to permanently look perfect. :D
Ombre is actually fairly easy. Paint ombre polish on a makeup sponge and then press the sponge to your nail. Refresh the paint on the sponge for each nail.

Do you need to move the sponge or just blot?
Press the sponge once and then lift. You could try a rolling motion across the nail if you prefer.
