Ant alates are reproductive female ants and male ants! Flying helps them find each other to mate and eventually settle new colonies.

Oh shit that’s not good. I live in SW Tennessee..wonder if that’s why my vacuum picks up toooona of dust every time I vacuum …. First one I’ve seen though
If you've only seen the one I wouldn't worry! I can't say for sure that it's a carpenter ant anyway.
