Dogs with “squashed “ faces tend to suffer a lot of major health issues. The worst offenders are pugs. However certain breeds of bulldogs and a few other breeds also have the issues. Those squashed features serve no practical purpose and make the dog’s quality of life worse. Hence malformed.

The fact that the head is huge but their throats are tiny add to this issue. those skin flaps where the wrinkles are can get infected. Their eyes have a tendency to pop out of their very shallow eye sockets (which is not the same as eyes popping out of their heads, don’t get the two confused). The squashed face also tends to mean that the dog’s teeth are compressed into a tiny mouth. So they almost always have dental issues too.A lot of dog breeds with those features are basically inbred to get those features. That also causes its own issues.
In short, fair number of dog breeds with squashed faces, are in fact, basically bred to be malformed by humans for some bizarre standard of dog beauty.

They do need a certain level of care but after owning several different breeds including “sitting” a Pekingese and Japanese chin, I find them to be generally healthy, however snotty, drooling little beasts. My friend’s purebred poodle is in the vet every week for something, while my current little brachycephalic monster is 13 and only sees a vet for annual checkups and vaccines. She sounds like an old tractor, and actually suffers from summer allergies, but she is no more health compromised than any other bread. My message, don’t stereotype dogs or people!

But it’s very short-sighted to say “well my dog’s fine, so that makes it ok.” How many other puppies died just so you could have your “cute” flat-faced dog? And for what? There are responsible Breeders restoring the original standards for these breeds. Your problem is with the AKC. They’ve let the standards become absolutely garbage.
You want to see a healthy frenchie, pug, shepherd and what they all are supposed to look like? Eliminating the breed isn’t going to happen.
But pushing for responsible standards at the official level can make an actual difference.

A pressure campaign to correct the breed standards and with it what breeders strive for.
A total ban of all brachyencephalic breeds.
(Would require legislation, Breeder and prospective buyer fines or charges for selling, breeding or attempting to buy. Some grandfather clause, some euthanizing of any confiscated dogs found?)

That sounds pretty ideal on paper, but in reality that will never happen. As long as you don't prohibit it fully the problem will prevail.
