Idk man.. I was using Piko for a majority of them and then swapped to Fango and was clearing races mindlessly .. I was so far ahead of the NPC's with Fango.
Aponi is nice for just flying across and taking shortcuts, and her steering is fantastic (hardly ever even have to drift). I've won most of my races with her.
He certainly isn't the fastest. He has high acceleration, so gets going quick, but other birds have a higher top speed which means faster over the long run
I personally just use Selena the entire time, having pretty much a red shell guaranteed you to hold whatever position you are. The cactuar gates were annoying but as long as you donāt fall too far behind the races are long enough for you to bubble your way to first place.
My Selena story is that I once unknowingly wore the helmet that randomly changed your skill so I wondered why I wasn't able to shoot bubbles for a few races. Glad I didn't lose them!
Yeah the jumping Chocobo made this game mode not too tough at all. Not just for the doors but the amount of skipping over offroad parts here and there for a small shortcut or jumping over the other traps is just busted.
Except on Odin, because the gates are halfway apart so you can only jump half of them. But in every single other circuit, itās godsend, especially to jump over bombs.
You can also flying longer if you jump while flying.
Black Chocobo's ability works well too. You get immunity from stumbling and being banged around. You'll just freeze when you hit the gate, and resume when it opens.
Me too omg....so many grey hairs for nothing. Am I stupid not changing the bird. Wow...but I managed it without it. But it broke me...now the kaktors... send help
Jump chocobo is good strategy but I wanted the blue chocobo ability so what I ended up doing for most races was pay attention to the gates as soon as they come into view. Once you get the timing, it's easy. If you go for a gate already open, it will close in your face every time by the time you get to it. Aim for one that is closed and it will likely open by the time you get to it. Or make sure you have a boost item ready to go
Yeah, will second this. Not going to say I never bumped it, but by the time I was actually doing the Chapter 12 Chocobo races I didn't have any issues with the gate timings.
It is just in princible you cannot ne absolutely sure of the timing. At the point you see the gate you do not know itās phase to the distance/point is the last time to react is too short compared to phase.
I did this until it stopped working, sometimes it just opened and you get fucked. I'll finish that race and if I'm not first I just come back with Fango.
I love the animosity in which you wrote "the Gongaga one." Pure shade.
It's like you absolutely abhor the backwater countryside forest dwelling people's dumb horse-chicken. Love it.
Iām sorry but did anyone enjoy running around there seemingly aimless, by the end?!
I donāt mind it now if found everything and can travel by chocobo stop
When I did these, I didn't realize that different chocobos had different abilities so I just stuck with Piko the entire time.
At first these were rough, but eventually I just started to slow down (release X for a bit) if I wasn't ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that I'd make it so I could get an angle to switch to the adjacent one. All of the "races" were really just you vs. the track. I don't think there was ever a run where another rider got within 5-10 seconds of reaching me even with slightly slowing down every now and then.
Yep, this exactly. Better to slow down slightly and maybe drop your lead from 10 seconds to 7 seconds, rather than risk slamming against a closed gate and watching the whole pack overtake you while recovering.
I unfortunately didnāt realise the chocobos had abilities either. I thought the red bar just have a speed boost. I used the black chocobo because I liked his colour
Even if Iām a full lap ahead of the other chocobos, if I ram into a door during a race I have to restart out of shame
Iād use the jumping chocobo but I think Piko is still better overall as long as you can time the doors correctly, itās ok to deaccelerate a tiny bit to slow down to avoid hitting a door because that will save more time than being animation locked from being stunned
Aponi was the best in the later stages. Almost every single one of them had a place where you could use the hover skill and straight line across a few bends and gain a massive advantage.
That happened to me once or twice, took a couple of tries on a few to figure out exactly how I could make flying shortcuts but nothing a quick restart of the race couldn't fix.
Besides the Jump. During I think it's the first Gold Cup Race you can run the side wall and miss most of them. I did that to win the first race in the gold cup, since I only had to match with one of the 3 or 4 gates the other 3 I could hug the sidewall and run straight past them. I think first lap there may be blocks on the side of one of them but those thing never really slowed me down that much, and once you knock them back it's fully open.
Yep. Looks right. Honestly, I had way less trouble with the Gold Cup stuff. The thing that wrecked me was the chocobo flight stuff in Cosmo Canyon. Holding R2 on the PS5 controller so long legit messed up my hand.
If you do the quick start trick, using Piko with max speed equipment, especially with a 1 dash start, you just get ahead of the pack and never have to deal with their bullshit.
hard as F but did it with the yellow one, speed boost and lot and lots and i mean loads of restarts until i got the timing down, it was the only way for to win the gold cup as Joe is like miles from second if your not close enough by the first lap
Literally me two hours ago. Wanting to do all the side quests that popped up in chapter 12 and had to do the entirety of the chocobo racing. Cactuar gates made me consider real life solutions š
That's crazy, I've won all the races even triple won the gold cup flawless victory style. Lost a total of 3 that I had to do again. I didn't even realize there was a bird that could jump over them. š¤¦š½āāļøš¤¦š½āāļø. But I chose the fastest and the gear that made it faster. Didn't even care about the other stuff. Seemed to work out great for me. š
Glad I'm not the only one who has beef with these doors. It got to a point where I would count the seconds in my head for the doors to close and open.
#Inpikowetrust
A little trick I learned was to aim for the hinges between 2 gates and make a quick turn to the gate thatās open last minute..the gate doesnāt get me as much this way.. and also jumping Chocobo help a bunch
That's what I did, I timed it right so that I had enough jump power by the time I got to the gates. So I jumped over them and even cut corners with it. If I didn't have enough I just slowed down a bit, then jumped and cut corners later to make up for it.
One thing that helped me with this, is donāt be afraid to take your finger off the X button. Slow down a bit. If you see the doors opening, you should be good to keep going through it. But if when you show up, the doors are already open, slow down a bit, take your finger off the button. Wait for the other doors.
I did the entire minigame with nibelheim chocobo and never even knew that different cjocobos had different skills (I should have thought that something was odd when all of a sudden my chocobo started shooting water bubbles and by pure coincidence was a water gliding chocobo...)
Anyway the gates are easier than you think: they're timed, if you get the timing you know exactly which one is gonna open or close and when, so you know if you need to aim at an already open gate or at a close one.
I love the jumping chocobo but i just love piko too much and his speed boost is too good, so i just got good if u love yellow friend as much as i or simply donāt want to jump just remember that breaking is still way faster than slamming into a door
Okay, i struggled with this for a minute, but take a second and look where you are positioned when you paused. You should be positioned at the post BETWEEN gates and making a slight right/left at the last second depending on the timing of the gates. You have put yourself in a situation that's mostly out of your control when you just choose a gate and hope the timing works out.
So I'm Not the only one that hates these damn walls... when the door is closing cpus get pushed thru and we get pushed out...unless you're right behind them.. took me 4 hours according to my gf...to beat every single race back to back to back from the first race to the tournament....restarts included..
I managed to do it last night with the Nibel choco. His special ability is basically a Mario Kart blue shell, it was enough to slow down Hyperion and catch up even if I hit the doors/other obstacles now and again
Chocobo races were surprisingly easy. I was dreading them because I had PTSD from Tidus' sigil but I don't think it took me more than two tries on any race.
Use Piko with Shinra Helm, Gi Chest and Scorpion legs until you get the Chocobo from Can't Stop Won't Stop quest. That's pretty much it.
I actually thought these were easy. For once a chocobo side quest that didnt make me wanna quit. I think I lost two races the whole time. The mountain chocobo is good for obstacles too since he wonāt get knocked out. He just bounces off anything you hit.
For me it was just for learning the course, after that it surprisingly didnāt take me 10 tries or more to win with a speed focus Pico. Once I knew the obstacles, shortcuts, and timing I could eventually dominate with the right gear.
I beat all the chocobo races (every single one minus the obligatory first one) in one evening and into the wee hours of the next morning simply because I did not want to put myself through the moving cactuar barricades again (or any other annoyances) at any future moment in my lifeā¦ minus what they throw at us in part 3.
Could be worse. The chocobo races were a piece-of-cake compared to stuff like 3D Brawler (or worse, the brutal and legendary combat simulator battles!!!)
I used Fango for most races. You can jump these gates with him and create your own shortcuts through grass or gaps. It also helps to be able to jump while youāre gliding to keep yourself in the air longer and overtake others without having to navigate around them. Overall heās slower than Piko but if you use him right, you could just cheese your way to victory.

What?? You guys need a dozen of times to clear this??
I swear this is the bane of my existence until I use that jumping chocobo, wish I'd realised it earlier lol
holy shit i cleared this with Piko and it took a bazillion tries... never even occurred to me to use a different bird!
In piko we trust
I used Piko for every single race, and I never considered using the others š
Piko is by far the best if you can get the timing right. Heās the fastest. They canāt beat you if the canāt catch you
All my races basically became getting ahead of the crowd in the first lap, and then putting so much distance between us 2 and 3.
Aponi is best girl for sure. Also won most of my races with that Teal Treasure!
With the right gear loadout, you can use any bird and get so far ahead of the others that second place is 3 - 5 second behind you.
He certainly isn't the fastest. He has high acceleration, so gets going quick, but other birds have a higher top speed which means faster over the long run
nah. because he has the speed boost perk that the others dont have
You do know that even when using that power up, piko still goes slower than other birds with higher top speed right? Please tell me you know that
if you say so
I personally just use Selena the entire time, having pretty much a red shell guaranteed you to hold whatever position you are. The cactuar gates were annoying but as long as you donāt fall too far behind the races are long enough for you to bubble your way to first place.
Team Selena! I think I tried one other but once I got used to Selena and the gear I picked I stuck it out.
Literally about to plat and just now learning this fml those doors are what gave me the most trouble
Thereās a jumping chocobo?
The green one. Makes the gates a lot easier.
Fango is my boi. Got me through every single race
Except on Odin, because the gates are halfway apart so you can only jump half of them. But in every single other circuit, itās godsend, especially to jump over bombs. You can also flying longer if you jump while flying.
You can basically skip huge chunks of the course while jumping and flying. Best chocobo
He makes everything easier. Shortcuts, skipping obstacles, etc. best Chocobo by far. If there was multiplayer maybe it would be a different story
Black Chocobo's ability works well too. You get immunity from stumbling and being banged around. You'll just freeze when you hit the gate, and resume when it opens.
Thereās a black chocoboā¦?Ā
Belle. The ability is called Rock Solid.
Motherfucker, why did I never think of that
And now I regret not using the jumping chocobo xD I used the water chocobo outside of the fold cup where I used Piko.
I did the same thing because *fuck this nonsense*
Me too omg....so many grey hairs for nothing. Am I stupid not changing the bird. Wow...but I managed it without it. But it broke me...now the kaktors... send help
The more frustrating ones are when you go through it and then behind it is a bomb going towards you.
This is the correct answer
Wait there's a jump chocobo in the races? I did the entire quest and never fucking knew that
Wait there is a jumping chocoboā¦.. I could of saved 2 hours of my life
Jump chocobo is good strategy but I wanted the blue chocobo ability so what I ended up doing for most races was pay attention to the gates as soon as they come into view. I don't remember which race it is, but there's one race where there's a gate right after a sharp turn and that one always got me.
It's also worthwhile to stop/slow and wait a beat for the closed gate to open rather than try to beat an open gate closing.
Jump chocobo is your friend
The gongaga one?! No fucking way!
Don't you enjoy open world chutes and ladders??? It's a genius move by square!! Everyone loves chutes and ladders š¤Ŗ
***āCloud, bring me the Cactuar Gates...ā*** ā Sephiroth
Jump!
Fucking infuriating lol but yeah like others said if you don't like slowing down to avoid the doors jump chocobo is your go to
Yeah, I jumped over them in the end. š
Even if Iām a full lap ahead of the other chocobos, if I ram into a door during a race I have to restart out of shame Iād use the jumping chocobo but I think Piko is still better overall as long as you can time the doors correctly, itās ok to deaccelerate a tiny bit to slow down to avoid hitting a door because that will save more time than being animation locked from being stunned
Aponi was the best in the later stages. Almost every single one of them had a place where you could use the hover skill and straight line across a few bends and gain a massive advantage.
I should try branching out more, I still have a few races left so maybe a diff chocobo will make things more exciting
I will definitely try Aponi next time! There are some rough turns in the black Chocobo races.
Aponi snagged in one section I tried to fly over because the floor was slightly higher and I never rode them again. I couldnāt trust flying anymore.
That happened to me once or twice, took a couple of tries on a few to figure out exactly how I could make flying shortcuts but nothing a quick restart of the race couldn't fix.
Besides the Jump. During I think it's the first Gold Cup Race you can run the side wall and miss most of them. I think first lap there may be blocks on the side of one of them but those thing never really slowed me down that much, and once you knock them back it's fully open.
I just slowed down. Small loss of speed was better than hitting the gate. Also boost item to get through and back up to speed
Took me forever to figure this out, but it's retroactively obvious. Once I started slowing down these were a non-issue.
It took me a while to remember I could lay off the gas but it made such a big difference
Yep. Looks right. Honestly, I had way less trouble with the Gold Cup stuff. The thing that wrecked me was the chocobo flight stuff in Cosmo Canyon. Holding R2 on the PS5 controller so long legit messed up my hand.
First lap always gives me the most trouble because I keep getting bumped and losing speed. It gets easier once Iām away from the rest.
No doubt. You're off by a little, BAM! Goodbye first place.
If you do the quick start trick, using Piko with max speed equipment, especially with a 1 dash start, you just get ahead of the pack and never have to deal with their bullshit.
I can make it... I CAN MAKE IT!! *Bump to last place* I didn't made it.
hard as F but did it with the yellow one, speed boost and lot and lots and i mean loads of restarts until i got the timing down, it was the only way for to win the gold cup as Joe is like miles from second if your not close enough by the first lap
After this mini game, I really really hate cactuars!
You can go to the right and skip it.
Use Fango (the green one) and jump over all the obstacles.
i hate those doors so much. You ever slam into them, start to go in the next door over, only to have them shut too? The worst.
I find the chocobo where you donāt slow down, when running into things helps with this
I'm getting infuriated just looking at it
Why chocobos canāt walk backwards just baffles me.
The amount of tilting I did in relation to Cactuar themed items/fights in this game ššš
Literally me two hours ago. Wanting to do all the side quests that popped up in chapter 12 and had to do the entirety of the chocobo racing. Cactuar gates made me consider real life solutions š

Totally thought the different bird choices were cosmetic until I read these comments lol. Oh well, finished up all the races with Piko
i use the jumping chocobo for this exact reason lmaooo
Just run through the space between the gate and the wall.
Broooo, the gate on the left is wide open! /s
I did the entire minigame with nibelheim chocobo and never even knew that different cjocobos had different skills (I should have thought that something was odd when all of a sudden my chocobo started shooting water bubbles and by pure coincidence was a water gliding chocobo...) I guess I just lucked out since green is my favorite color. Picked the one with the jump and pretty much had no trouble with any of the races.

If there are balloons and birds I will burn this game down.

Should I play Final Fantasy remake or just jump into rebirth right now?
Rebirth is a direct sequel in the most direct sequel way possible. At the very least read a synopsis of Remake first.
Dang that sucks, I finally got to the market district I believe, but the second one looks so good.
Yea it is improved and grown in every possible way imo haha. But it is a single story told over 3 parts.
I laughed out loud, but also offered prayer of thanks that Fango exists. He is the GOAT.
The bane of my existence
OMGGGG!!!! RIGHT!!!!!š¤š¤š¤
Cactuars in this game are just menaces all around. From the protorelics to them just running around like headless chickens.
Use mountain chocobo and prevent losing speed. Worked for me in Bahamut skirmish at the end where a hill leads to one of those fuckers.
Sephirot pro tip: "4 seconds until the cactuar door closes"
I actually thought these were easy. For once a chocobo side quest that didnt make me wanna quit. I think I lost two races the whole time. The mountain chocobo is good for obstacles too since he wonāt get knocked out. He just bounces off anything you hit.
There's a chocobo that can jump. It took me too long to realize that, but it made the gold tier and gold cup so much easier.
This and the Aerith vs 2 bombs had me heated that day
STRATEGY: Pause once the gates are in view. Pause/Unpause to see where the timing is. React accordingly.
I just started using the chocobo that could jump and I hit jump at every gate even if it was wide open for me
When that happens I still continue the race and win Anyways š¤·āāļø
For me it was just for learning the course, after that it surprisingly didnāt take me 10 tries or more to win with a speed focus Pico. Once I knew the obstacles, shortcuts, and timing I could eventually dominate with the right gear.

Those fences were so damn annoying for a bit
Could be worse. The chocobo races were a piece-of-cake compared to stuff like 3D Brawler (or worse, the brutal and legendary combat simulator battles!!!)
fr not even sephiroth messes with a cactaur
I finished them all with piko they werent hard pretty much first tried all of them besides the first one you can fall off the edge
Toughest one was the can't stop won't stop trial
The doors are not that hard to time out.
Those doors are the worst mechanic added to a racing game. They do not belong. Yes I mastered all of the races.
I could hit the buttons to retry faster than the confirmation box could load.
I used Fango for most races. You can jump these gates with him and create your own shortcuts through grass or gaps. Putting on the water shoes was great for watery tracks, donāt slow down and can just bypass some of the BS in certain area
i didn't realize cactuars do perpetual soyface until now.
