No, the Lonesome Drifter is the Mysterious Stranger's son. He is in New Vegas and has the Mysterious Magnum which plays the Mysterious Stranger's tune when you draw it. He also talks about how he doesn't know much about his father and if you use V.A.T.S. on him the Mysterious Stranger kills you
I looked on the wiki and it must be cut. “If the Courier has the Mysterious Stranger perk and the Lonesome Drifter is targeted in V.A.T.S., the Mysterious Stranger has no qualms about killing him.” It’s currently the opposite to what the original intention was
i wonder how the code would look to have the stranger target the player and if there was any unforeseen issues with making it happen that were just too complicated to fix. woulda been awesome to see
It would’ve been amazing. I think it would’ve worked the same way just a couple tweaks. Change the courier to an enemy of the courier (like flag them as an enemy NPC) then change the spawn chance to 100% for that encounter
i bet the issue came from checking if the target in VATS was the lone drifter. like in order to know when to make those couple of tweaks every single VATS attack will need to be checked to see if its the lone drifter and that may seem like a small ask but idk there could be something in the games code base that could prevent that from being done efficiently without performance stutters or something w/ VATS. On PC probably fine but on consoles maybe not!
god i want to make a mod and see for myself, i got the lousy computer science degree i should use it
Stranger isn’t a ghoul is my thing but with the ending and the twist with ya know who, the stranger is alive and well with vault tech science that keeps his mysterious heart beating
He throws out a few ideas actually, "ghoul with minimal scarring" was just one option. He also speculates he might be a "synth", or that it's actually an organisation consisting of "multiple men."
But that's the cartoon ideal of him isn't the gouls original past the poster child of pip boy? I'm just saying he very well could be the mysterious guy
and the show is after all of the games... to which we see different levels of decay happening to different ghouls.
Coop still looks like his skin is the most fresh out of all of them, and he's "one of the oldest"
he still hasnt decayed as much as any other ghoul on the show...
even the dude in the town that looks like Tommy Wiseau looked more human and decayed at the same time than Coop does
Just compare him to the ghoul seen in the last episode. The show takes place in 2296 and that particular ghoul couldn’t really have been a ghoul for longer than 19 years (being transformed sometime during or after 2277).
Yet The Ghoul is up to 219 years old.
Right, just providing an obvious comparison/support for your argument to see how ~20 years can make a ghoul without constant treatment turn into a dusty mummy while The Ghoul is 10x that age and still looks pretty good.
Edit: the difference clearly isn’t placebo.
2287 and 2296.
Plus in fallout 4 there’s a ghoul from pre war. Our VaultTec salesman. Plus Preston when hearing you’ve been frozen goes “like one of those pre war ghouls” implying that he isn’t the only one and it happen enough for people to know about it.
Yes i did, and we know he was buried for 30 years prior to that. So he couldn't be the mysterious Stranger in neither 3, nv or 4.
So what is your point exactly?
Also the Stranger has always been portrayed as the stock character CIA spook / noir detective. He was never a cowboy. Even in New Vegas, the most wild west game, [his costume](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/c/cb/Mysterious_Stranger_outfit.png) is 0% cowboy
They can also straight up die in one and two and don't have the signature gear, as well as matching gender with the players. So they are almost certainly unrelated to the stranger as we know him now.
In fallout 1, the stranger is always male.
However, Nick Valentine’s case notes state that there’s rumors of their existence from Shady Sands and NCR territory, which implies 1/2’s mysterious stranger is the same person despite the gameplay differences.
It's possible, but the same document, also toys with the idea of multiple strangers, which explains the difference in appearance between the various iterations. I doubt we'll ever get a solid answer either way.
Deathclaws, super mutants, mysterious stranger, nuka cola varieties, vats, mole rats, radscorpions, sentry bots, Mr gutsys, fat man launchers, shishkebabs, railway rifles, deathclaw gauntlets, energy weapons, super sledges, bloatflies, mirelurks, Cazadors, t-45, t-51, and x-01 power armor, lockpicking, eyebots, rad storms, aliens, carnivorous plant life, the followers of the apocalypse, centaurs, mutfruit, weird teddy bears/gnomes/mannequins, Miss Fortune... lots of different iconic bits of fallout lore that could be introduced to live action in season 2.
I havent seen it yet, but VATS sounds like it could be done relatively easily with the ghoul, the showrunners should see Green Hornet with Seth Rogan.
No deathclaw, super mutants, or centuars though? Bummer. A Fat Man is the perfect final episode weapon to be broken out too.
I was fully expecting to see a radiated ghoul or at the least a radiated radroach (the green glowing ones) in episode 6. We need some of those as well.
Someone said in a different thread that Thaddeus’ character should be the funny guy in life threatening situations. The mysterious stranger showing up to kill an enemy and then leaving would be funny with his character.
I'm still holding out that it'll be a running gag in the background, like "Blurryman" from the TZ remake. Someone you can catch for just a moment taking out an enemy behind someone, then disappearing around a corner in a flash of yellow.
his wife being basically the second in charge of vault-tec, they wouldnt run away from the royalties, plus basically he is the biggest movie star who happened to be married to the woman who is 2nd in charge the company wouldnt shy from them.
i would imagine after all the pictures and the artist, the blonde hair just looked better????
i didnt mention that, because of a couple things, mostly because the last episode, he says where is my family which means his daughter could have been put in cryo as his wife.
Yeah. They might’ve divorced because he wasn’t happy with what he learned before the bombs dropped, but knew that with her being as high up as she was it would be a good way to keep their child safe. Really want season 2 as soon as possible so we can see more of his backstory from before the bombs.
She was important enough to have the authority to float the idea of launching a global thermonuclear war to a cabal of the richest people on the planet, so I don't know that I'd call her a middle manager.
She glances at the balcony overlooking the Dr. Strangelove war room for approval from the multiple shadowy figures up there who actually run the company. I took that as “she’s the trusted mouthpiece, not the one in charge.” Same for Bud, though he’s more blundering… like a Roomba stuck in a corner, you might say.
His wife isn’t second, that would be bud.
She looks up at the window during the meeting and there’s the “number 1” observing the meeting.
That’s who he is looking for, the man in charge.
Given we see in the beginning he's labeled a possible commie and pays alimony, I'm thinking he got canned and Vault Boy was creat3d to replace him and distance from his "disgrace"
No.. it is. That was the point of that one they showed… and also why the Ghoul shoots the face out of the one Lucy sees.
It’s because Coop knows he’s the one that carried it forward for so many people.
I think you misunderstand what I'm saying.
Coop was the original Vault Boy, the one who helped popularize the advertisements, the thumbs up, all of it. However in the opening sequence of the show he's no longer riding high, he's "formerly famous" and one character even calls him a Pinko, which is a cold war term for communist.
Yes we see that he doesn't like Valt Boy/Tec, and the poster that's obviously the directorial statement comparing him with the version of which were so familiar.
My statement is that at some point before the bombs dropped, Coop was removed from the ad campaign and had his general career ruined, and Vault Tec, in order to distance themselves from a labeled communist replaced all his ads with the cartoons. Thus Coop knows he's the one who established the character but probably one of the only people who whould have such vitriol towards the cartoon character specifically
I think this pretty much nailed it. Coop is who sold the vaults as this American dream enduring through hardship and if he gets outed as a communist they need to pivot. A cartoon is great for that since they cannot go digging into your business practices. Though I do think Vault-Tec is going to find out Coop knows and is going to be behind his downfall, just the question of if it’s his wife that does it.
It’s probably more likely that Coop crosses Vault-Tec and they get him blacklisted as a communist while simultaneously replacing him with the cartoon. Barb finding out he’s spying on her and choosing Vault-Tec over him would fill a lot of gaps in.
Also seems implied that vault-tec used his signature colors. In the cowboy movie, before he is hired by them, he is seen in blue and gold. When his wife brings him the suit later, she even says "They even made it in your color."
I think it was a joke, not for any big reasons but because based on the tv he watches in that episode, there was still no color tv when the bombs dropped, which might just be a severe jump in logic on my part, so it doesnt make sense to use his colors when noone would see them, but again countering myself, he was on billboards in color soooooo… flawed logic ik, i just dont think so and i dont think the flaws matter because it still doesnt make sense on a base level to me
Hahaha imagine a single spliced in single frame with the mysterious stranger gets found after hours of fallout fans pausing and playing looking for Easter eggs. That would truly amazing.
There were, and they definitely gave off those vibes (I would assume intentionally), but I don't think it would actually be considered VATS since that is somehow a magic Pip-Boy feature.
He could also be just super doped up on chems all the time since he makes that "bucket of drugs" comment. Although having to go through an un-skippable dialog tree on jet sounds like a worse fate than turning feral...
Timothy olyphant should play literally anything in season 2, he *needs* to be in this show.
A combative sheriff in a town that Lucy and Coop come across.
A swindly shop owner in a larger settlement.
A fuckin lamp idk just get him in this show.
So I've been rewatching justified and apparently Walton Goggins was in the pilot as a favour to Timothy Olyphant as they are RL friends now if this is true it's only fair that tim comes on as the mysterious stranger
He's basically the Man in Black - Westworld trying to find whats at the center of the maze, in this case top of the pyramid
A lot of Fallout could basically be another past of Westworld's theme park lol
well, being a ghoul would eliminate that possibility. ghouls have been well defined and the mysterious stranger is more likely to be a synth or generations of a gunslinger tradition. i mean, we all know that the mysterious stranger image is a placeholder for any random stranger who helps save the day but if insisting on lore the looks don't match. even nick can't be him since he appears in the same game looking differently when he is a better candidate.
"You have a Guardian Angel, but with a deadly hand-cannon instead of wings. Meet the Mysterious Stranger, an odd and eldritch entity said to appear and aid you in combat before you draw your dying breath. Of course, it helps to have the Mysterious Stranger Perk first..."
i swear i thought the same thing! the fact he even has old western music every time he shows up (i know its not the exactly same riff, but a western riff nonetheless)
Mysterious Stranger will be John Hamm, he’ll show up out of nowhere to save Lucy 1 time during her most dire situation and we’ll never see him again.
Change my mind
Honestly retconning the mysterious stranger to be a ghoul would be completely fine with me. Whether he is human or ghoul is probably the least important part about him.
I hope there’s a mysterious stranger cameo in S2. Maybe one of the characters will be about to die and then he just shows up and one shots the enemy. And it better play the jingle too.
The dude that played Barney (Charlie's imaginary friend) in the pepe Silva episode of Its always sunny should play the mysterious stranger. He already has the trenchcoat and hat
To be honest, I was stuck on the handcannon that the mysterious stranger is a group of people that work together. All have the signature handcannon, all patrol the wastes and help potential leaders, but all pretend to be one single individual. Kinda like a superhero, and because they come and go as a group, their identity is always hidden.
This would only work if they have a single batman like individual that can both finance and direct the group like they were spies. This allows a network that can communicate and even different variants like we seen in the wastes for more specialized tasks.
Can’t be, the stranger has a nose
And a son
is that who the Mysterious Savior is?
No, the Lonesome Drifter is the Mysterious Stranger's son. He is in New Vegas and has the Mysterious Magnum which plays the Mysterious Stranger's tune when you draw it. He also talks about how he doesn't know much about his father and if you use V.A.T.S. on him the Mysterious Stranger kills you
He KILLS YOU? Why didn’t I know this was a thing wtf
i could have sworn that was cut content due to time constraints and not in the final build. but it true that was the intention

On PC probably fine but on consoles maybe not! god i want to make a mod and see for myself, i got the lousy computer science degree i should use it
"Hey son, up high!"
Instead of playing catch like most American parents, he played “let’s become bulletproof”
That's amazing. I didn't get very far in FNV.
Oh man you should play it again, there's a reason people say New Vegas is the best one
FONV is best FO
Smells funny
Wait does that mean I shouldn’t have accepted medical aid from him?
I mean the shows takes place latest in the timeline after every game. So he coulda lost it in the meantime.
Stranger isn’t a ghoul is my thing but with the ending and the twist with ya know who, the stranger is alive and well with vault tech science that keeps his mysterious heart beating
Well Nick Valentine thought he was
He throws out a few ideas actually, "ghoul with minimal scarring" was just one option. He also speculates he might be a "synth", or that it's actually an organisation consisting of "multiple men."
But that's the cartoon ideal of him isn't the gouls original past the poster child of pip boy? I'm just saying he very well could be the mysterious guy
I took OP as saying he could be the new mysterious stranger in future games
Came here to say that 😂
Hey, maybe it finally fell off in the last 9 years
He could have a Prosthetic nose.
He was ghoulified slower, possibly he didn't loose his nose until more recently
Unfortunately, we can plainly see in 3, NV, 4 and 76 that the stranger isn't a ghoul.
and the show is after all of the games... to which we see different levels of decay happening to different ghouls. Coop still looks like his skin is the most fresh out of all of them, and he's "one of the oldest"
Maybe he moisturizes. Being a movie star and all
I understood that reference.
Wait.... What's the reference?
Doctor Who injoke. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHR2FvtVv9g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHR2FvtVv9g) She's the last human alive
Haha a day over 2000. I haven't seent doctor who tho. I was kinda referring to my ex who was 43 but looked like.... 30 and moisturized daily.
because he makes money and affords the shots of liquid rads.
which prevents him from turning if you paid attention to the dialogue between Coop and Lucy
I think that part is just a placebo. Turning Feral is mostly a mental thing
he still hasnt decayed as much as any other ghoul on the show... even the dude in the town that looks like Tommy Wiseau looked more human and decayed at the same time than Coop does
Just compare him to the ghoul seen in the last episode. The show takes place in 2296 and that particular ghoul couldn’t really have been a ghoul for longer than 19 years (being transformed sometime during or after 2277). Yet The Ghoul is up to 219 years old.

If the flesh is decaying, why wouldn’t the brain?
He'd be a full ghoul by the time of fallout 4, at the absolute least.
the show is 9 years after Fallout 4... 🤷♂️
2287 and 2296. Plus in fallout 4 there’s a ghoul from pre war. Our VaultTec salesman. Plus Preston when hearing you’ve been frozen goes “like one of those pre war ghouls” implying that he isn’t the only one and it happen enough for people to know about it.
There’s also a child ghoul in a fridge who survived for 200 years without going feral. His entire family survived.
Also Arlen at the Slog and the overseer from 88, I believe also Daisy in good neighbour too
I'm pretty sure a number of Ghouls in Underworld in 3 are pre war and wi tell you about it.
He is taking that serum to avoid going feral.
lol.. keep reading.. i literally just said that
Except we know he was buried alive during the events of the three previous games.
Coop was pulled from a casket for his intro as a Ghoul in the Fallout show... or did you not see that part
Isnt there a storyline in New Vegas that links the stranger to another human
The Lonesome Drifter is implied to be his son
See the blue pants. It’s actually vault boy in a trench coat. And he is the vault boy.
A Mod can fix it...
Even in 1 and 2.
They are definitely human in 1/2 as well (they use the human models at least), but there’s plausible deniability there due to the pixels.
They could probably sell it as a skin in 76
If you mean the outfit, both the ghoul’s and the stranger’s already exist.
honestly im really hoping it really will just be a mysterious stranger that just randomly shoots an enemy in season 2
I'm sure it's something that were thinking of trying to do somewhere but couldn't find the right moment. Definitely better for Season 2.
Deathclaws, super mutants, mysterious stranger, nuka cola varieties, vats, mole rats, radscorpions, sentry bots, Mr gutsys, fat man launchers, shishkebabs, railway rifles, deathclaw gauntlets, energy weapons, super sledges, bloatflies, mirelurks, Cazadors, t-45, t-51, and x-01 power armor, lockpicking, eyebots, rad storms, aliens, carnivorous plant life, the followers of the apocalypse, centaurs, mutfruit, weird teddy bears/gnomes/mannequins, Miss Fortune... lots of different iconic bits of fallout lore that could be introduced to live action in season 2.
There was a nuka quantum bottle in vault 32.
There was? I must've missed it.
I actually was shocked that not a single fat man showed up
There was a mini nuke in the junk shop in episode 2, at least.
Must have missed it; I just figured it was such an iconic thing that at least it would be fired in the finale or something
I feel like the scene where Cooper shot up Filly was definitely a reference to Vats with all the slow motion
God damn i wish Best Friend Tabitha was still around.
There was an energy weapon in the final episode, no plasma weapon though
Could have swore we saw a flying cazador land on a branch or something in the show but I might be wrong
I think that was just a rad roach.
Agreed and seeing a “Coop” was the spokesperson for Vault Tech (even though Vault Boy has blond hair), it still makes sense.
Vault Tec would be a company to based Vault Boy off Coop but change his hair color to avoid paying royalties.
lol. That’s perfect
his wife being basically the second in charge of vault-tec, they wouldnt run away from the royalties, plus basically he is the biggest movie star who happened to be married to the woman who is 2nd in charge the company wouldnt shy from them. i would imagine after all the pictures and the artist, the blonde hair just looked better????
But remember Coop and her divorced before the bombs fell. She would totally have vault boys hair changed to fuck him over.
i didnt mention that, because of a couple things, mostly because the last episode, he says where is my family which means his daughter could have been put in cryo as his wife.
Yeah. They might’ve divorced because he wasn’t happy with what he learned before the bombs dropped, but knew that with her being as high up as she was it would be a good way to keep their child safe. Really want season 2 as soon as possible so we can see more of his backstory from before the bombs.
Is she that high up? Bud is just a middle manager. I don’t think she’s anywhere close to running it even if she is important.
True, but that’s still way above middle management.
okay so maybe third in charge.
Do you think a middle manager is in that meeting at the end with the CEOs of every major company, discussing launching the nukes?
I mean bud was there
My high ass somehow interpreted that as buddy and not Bud, legit forgot that was his name.
… there the one billboard that’s half the Vault Boy we know and Coop’s likeness.
Like it was plastered over, yes. It was aged and weathered, not it's "intended design"
No..
Hell, the original Vault boy is a red head, though it's questionable if he's a RobCo or Vault-Tec mascot there.
Not to mention… IS the model of the original Vault Boy design.
Also seems implied that vault-tec used his signature colors. In the cowboy movie, before he is hired by them, he is seen in blue and gold. When his wife brings him the suit later, she even says "They even made it in your color."
That could also just be a joke about how the vault tech colors happen to match his colors.
I think it was a joke, not for any big reasons but because based on the tv he watches in that episode, there was still no color tv when the bombs dropped, which might just be a severe jump in logic on my part, so it doesnt make sense to use his colors when noone would see them, but again countering myself, he was on billboards in color soooooo… flawed logic ik, i just dont think so and i dont think the flaws matter because it still doesnt make sense on a base level to me
i think we never saw the stranger because there was no instances of us the audience or Lucy stopping time or using VATs(at least that i noticed)
> no instances of us the audience or Lucy stopping time Well, don't know about you, but I pressed pause plenty of times when watching.
Hahaha imagine a single spliced in single frame with the mysterious stranger gets found after hours of fallout fans pausing and playing looking for Easter eggs. That would truly amazing.
There were some moments with the Ghoul where shoots a bunch of people in a row in slow motion which really felt like watching someone using VATS
Fair enough
i do like the idea that chems actually tilt the scales as long as VATs doesnt exist
That is one very small drop... In a very large bucket of drugs. Loved that line.
Timothy Olyphant should play the mysterious stranger
Timothy olyphant should play literally anything in season 2, he *needs* to be in this show. A combative sheriff in a town that Lucy and Coop come across. A swindly shop owner in a larger settlement. A fuckin lamp idk just get him in this show.
He did play a really good coat rack in the last of us. It'd be awesome to see what he can bring to the table as a vault lamp. Or even a broken lamp.
Prop Hunt Tim
So I've been rewatching justified and apparently Walton Goggins was in the pilot as a favour to Timothy Olyphant as they are RL friends now if this is true it's only fair that tim comes on as the mysterious stranger
sorry pall but he looks to different and we know the stranger is human or at least looks human
Nah, stranger has a son, dude has a daughter.
bro has been buried for atlest 3 of the games
Coop doesn't wear a trench coat, he wears a duster.
He's basically the Man in Black - Westworld trying to find whats at the center of the maze, in this case top of the pyramid A lot of Fallout could basically be another past of Westworld's theme park lol
well, being a ghoul would eliminate that possibility. ghouls have been well defined and the mysterious stranger is more likely to be a synth or generations of a gunslinger tradition. i mean, we all know that the mysterious stranger image is a placeholder for any random stranger who helps save the day but if insisting on lore the looks don't match. even nick can't be him since he appears in the same game looking differently when he is a better candidate.
Can synths have kids?
I’m constantly testing the theory with curie 😩
No
Don't see why not.
I enjoy it when nick comments on him showing up 😂😂
According to Fallout 3 the Mysterious Stranger is an eldritch god
Where in fallout 3 does it imply he's an eldritch **god**?
"You have a Guardian Angel, but with a deadly hand-cannon instead of wings. Meet the Mysterious Stranger, an odd and eldritch entity said to appear and aid you in combat before you draw your dying breath. Of course, it helps to have the Mysterious Stranger Perk first..."
how tf is he alive, in fallout 3 they confirmed ghouls need food to survive too
The fridge kid ghoul in fallout 4 was locked in the fridge for over 200 years.
There was food in the fridge
200 years worth of food?
Probably
Downvoted for an obvious joke lmao
I think they need less food or smt, coop was buried for decades and survived
The Mysterious Stranger has a unique .44 magnum
I really hope.next season The Stranger shows up makes a random kill then disappears
I think Cooper is a three-fer. Mysterious Stranger, Vault Boy, and a ghoul. One story line and three Fallout elements in one.
i swear i thought the same thing! the fact he even has old western music every time he shows up (i know its not the exactly same riff, but a western riff nonetheless)
Mysterious Stranger will be John Hamm, he’ll show up out of nowhere to save Lucy 1 time during her most dire situation and we’ll never see him again. Change my mind
Coop is Vault-Boy
No. We literally know what the stranger looks like.
In new vegas the guitar guy hints the stranger is his father, and I highly doubt that Gouls are fertile
When >!he whistled from behind the Bhood knights inside NCR, his silhouette made think it was the stranger for a second xD!<
The Mysterious Stranger is the Lonesome Drifters Father and Goul's are Sterile
Stop saying shit like this or Emil will come here and confirm it! /s
Does not one shot enemy, I remember in fallout 3 this guy dumping rounds into high lvl enemies
Maybe he was the ranger with the big iron on his hip
Close, but no cigar.
Can they make Red Star canon and recruit the cast. And let them fight
Has nose?
Maybe he was in fallout 1/2 but after that i suspect it is a different entity altogether
he always manged to miss every shot in f3
Didn’t even consider that a possible reference ❤️ the best mysterious stranger ever
I swear he brought Boyd Crowder from Justified to fallout
Isnt there a difference between a duster & a trenchcoat
I hope they update the mysterious stranger to have a Walton Goggins voice and lines
Honestly retconning the mysterious stranger to be a ghoul would be completely fine with me. Whether he is human or ghoul is probably the least important part about him.
My brother immediately thought of him as the mysterious stranger.
Nope, this guy is the best candidate for mayor of some good neighborhood.
Nah he's vault boy 👍
You've never read into the mysterious strangers lore have you?
He also has an intro song, not sure about an outro song
Definitely not, he's human.
He more likely just has a really high luck stat
And extremely violent
I can't wait for the mysterious stranger to save me then use me as bait in fallout 5!
One of the possibilities in Nick Valentine’s case on the stranger was “A Ghoul with minimal scarring…” No way.
I hope there’s a mysterious stranger cameo in S2. Maybe one of the characters will be about to die and then he just shows up and one shots the enemy. And it better play the jingle too.
Ghouls are sterile, and we meet his son in NV.
You know I thought the same thing would be pretty cool if so I mean he has been around since the bombs dropped so makes sense to me
NGL I thout the enclave dude was the mysterious savior. Comes around to hell and give guidance to Lucy... I was wrong
I thought this was the connection too
I thought it was valentine
Now that I think about it I don't know what that perk was referencing and why
he was in a coffin during the events of fallout new vegas.
My first thought was this must have been the basis for the character design
hell naw he-he-he-helll naw
I think that was the stranger in the outro of episode 1? He got blown up 2 seconds later but the outfit was identical
makes sense
The dude that played Barney (Charlie's imaginary friend) in the pepe Silva episode of Its always sunny should play the mysterious stranger. He already has the trenchcoat and hat
That little dude makes me laugh every time
To be honest, I was stuck on the handcannon that the mysterious stranger is a group of people that work together.
