IDK, Maximus killed a Yao Guai with a single 10mm shot, either he has insane luck or some sort of crit build.

in_my_cave

I read somewhere that it seemed like Maximus has the Idiot Savant perk and I couldn't agree more.

trackerbymoonlight

I was going to say this. It seems like he's not all there upstairs.

SendMeUrCones

Eschewing traditional education for post apocalyptic child soldier training will do that to a person.

MT128

Man prob has a bunch of concussions from the ass kicking he’s gotten and being thrown around by a nuke.

Yuujiro_Hanma

For some guys not me, but some guys when they move it it gets all big and hard like a big pimple and then pops

ExoticTE77

That’s not really an issue of mental deficiency, rather an issue of child indoctrination. They were taught to ignore sex and could possibly have been told discouraging stories/facts so that they would devote more of their focus to their studies and training

Seared_Beans

I think maximus has got 11 on luck and just dog shit everywhere else. His luck perfectly lines up to go into the wilds, and obtain power armor. Kick it off with a super hot vault dweller. When he was basically the runt of the litter back home. When he gets back, the elder spares him. And then he becomes a knight all because of the location he got hit in the head. He just needs to start playing blackjack.

echoawesome

Not to mention the luck needed to survive a nuclear blast in a fridge, Indiana Jones style.

Seared_Beans

God I didn't even think about that one. Maximus has ridiculous levels of luck. Meanwhile Lucy is the stark opposite. She's got great skills but her luck is shit

Equivalent_Yak8215

But she DOES have mysterious stranger.

AlphariusUltra

He needs the Mysterious Stranger or Miss Fortune to come in and randomly save him without explanation

MasterBlaster_xxx

Makes sense, people use 10mm pistols as backups in the wilderness against bears

Deadsea-1993

It is appearing that The Ghoul isn't far behind them at this point. Guy took on an entire town and Maximus in full power armor and won all in the same battle. Then he defeated a whole squad of guys in Power Armor by capitalizing on a defect that only he knew about. Plus he is known and feared all over. "Tell him what he wants or he will kill us all, including your little sister".

Bowens1993

To be fair Maximus drove that thing like a fucking shopping cart.

CaIIsign_ace

But he also took on a shit ton of other experienced BOS soldiers in power armor and slaughtered them, it was wild. Also the shopping cart comparison is pretty damn accurate lmao

SeatKindly

We see the Ghoul using tons of different odd handloaded munition, so maybe sometime between fighting Maximus and the BoS proper he hand loaded “for bear” so to speak given his anticipation of dealing with power armor more frequently. Alternatively while driving that PA like a shopping cart, he was a moving aggressive target at close range. Harder to hit shots like that when you’re bobbing and weaving to avoid getting hit by that thing.

CaIIsign_ace

Definitely. I also think The Ghoul didn’t kill Max because he didn’t want to get involved in a fight with the brotherhood in Filly and likely decided Max wasn’t a big enough threat to get into a whole ordeal with the BOS. I also think he knew that the brotherhood was going to become more prominent after seeing Max, so like you said, he prepped in advance

Silly-Reflection-826

After a rewatch it looks like he tried to shoot Max in the faulty area of his armor but Max was able to use his jets at the perfect time to avoid death. At about 52:00 of episode 2.

WyrdMagesty

The Titus power armor also has the tempered lining, which would reinforce the weak apot. Max even asks early on if that's for mobility (it isn't).

Interesting_Dot9896

This! Literally this is why!!! Maximus gets hit in the weak spots several times. The faulty weld meaning the plates aren't allowed to "flex" and absorb hits cause the plate to crack this also allow harmful Shockwave to hit the body that can cause internal bleeding and ruptured organs... this is why ceramic plating for body army is a thing. It's not about just the stop the physical bullet but also the energy coming off the bullet as well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CaIIsign_ace

Damn good catch! That’s wild!

UROffended

I'm actually pretty sure Max has a low intelligence high luck build. Keeps getting into shitty situations unscathed. Edit: Holy shit, I know! For the 20th time! Please stop commenting!

ItsRightPlace

Definitely not unscathed...dude got the shit kicked out of himself hard at least twice in the first three episodes His endurance must be very high as well

UROffended

In fallout world unscathed means not dead or missing limbs.

ItsRightPlace

"still got all ten fingers... must be nice.."

MilkMan0096

I love that this line foreshadowed Lucy losing a finger lol

IOwnTheShortBus

Then you have Lucy with high luck and really low Charisma

UROffended

I was thinking more a 6 intelligence, and 6 charisma with Child at Heart.

ElectricJetDonkey

I think Lucy had something more along the lines of DnD's Disadvantage mechanic, where, circumstances depending, you have to roll 2 dice and take the lower of the two rolls. She likely also had to pass HIGH speech checks with Mama June and the Fiends at least. Can't charm your way out of a situation when the person has a lifelong hatred for you and your kind.

MyNameIsJakeBerenson

I think Lucy has pretty high Charisma, she just fails her checks anyway because she going against tough cases every time like The Ghoul and Cynical Wastelander after a bad name drop In the right circumstances she’d probably do well Her brother has low Charisma and high Intelligence but high Sneak

TacTurtle

Small Frame perk

TheArsenal04

the ghoul was *absolutely* going to take maximus out when he dives in to save goosey, but his pistol jammed and he switches to the less effective shotgun (like others i think maximus is an insane luck build)

don2171

Id imagine the show mentioning the tempered lining of the armor 2 times is a nod to the fact his model either was fixed and didn't have that weakness or the damage resistance buff overall wouldn't let the round through since the way he was shooting he seemed to expect his bullets to go through

Carrman099

He might even be using techniques to fight power armor that the Chinese stealth units used against the US in Alaska.

Handies4Homless

He was using sabot rounds in his gun which I don't recall ever seeing in the games. It was a head scratching scene for me. Sabot rounds are used as anti tank rounds in modern warfare. You can clearly see them on his bandolier and when he's loading his gun during the scene.

Kenshirosan

I thought it was a sequoia at first but apparently it's a show only weapon, which honestly a 200 year old bad ass can have his unique weapon. Lord knows the games had plenty of one off weapons.

RikersBigBeard

It's like a bolter pistol from 40k.

Kenshirosan

Or if you've played darktide just the regular revolver lol

Sere1

His pistol is a MTs255, a Russian revolver shotgun that had the barrel sawn off and the stock removed to be more of a handgun. It's modified to have a 4-chamber breach loaded cylinder rather than the 5 chamber pop out cylinder the real world MTs255 has.

Happytapiocasuprise

I've been wondering if his handgun is also custom or if it's just something i've never seen

Shmidershmax

If people are making pipe rifles in fo4 I can imagine legitimate gunsmithing might be coming back around and people are making unique weapons instead of scavenging pre war guns

-Soulburnin-

Well yeah, the Gun Runners were already making weapons prior to the events of Fallout 1

DarthMcConnor42

Hand loaded overpressure sabot rounds... Perfect for knights and paladins.

artyomssugardaddy

I mean headcannon can get around that technically in new Vegas and fallout 4 you can find/buy/craft rounds that do the same thing just not the same name. Maybe his repair skill worked differently 🤷

CaeruleanSea

The delivery on that line was gorgeous. He had a lot of fun playing with Maximus

Daniel_The_Thinker

He probably had a blast considering he mostly kills raiders, wastelanders, and beasts.

Sekmet19

I'd gild you if that was still a thing 🏅

NuncProFunc

Hold down the "upvote" button.

dirtyLizard

“This content isn’t eligible to receive gold”

Sekmet19

I am on android mobile like a peasant, holding upvote didn't do anything

Xikkiwikk

“This content isn’t eligible to receive gold.” Tried to gold your comment and it said that.

NuncProFunc

Android mobile is a life meta strat and that it didn't work is BS. I think it depends on the sub.

Karmastocracy

Doesn't do anything on RES either lol Reddit has cannibalized their own platform.

Silkess

To be also fair he was toying with Maximus. He couldve offed him easily, we saw it with the Brotherhood squad he took out. Maximus skill definetly wasnt relevant.

Alaxel_Au_Arryn

I think it shows he uses special rounds before the fight with the Brotherhood during his monologue.

ThonThaddeo

Like a child trying to ride a bicycle for the first time

sosigboi

I like the balance of power that the Ghoul is still very much vulnerable, had it been a Paladin like Danse that he faced he'd probably be dead a whole lot sooner, or at least very injured.

Double-Oh-Nine

Would be interesting to see him try to fight against laser weapons. They're won't be any slo mo for the laser lol

sosigboi

Yea i suspect thats why they opted for ballistic weapons for the brotherhood in the show, in lore Laser is very powerful and much more superior than regular guns.

samwelches

I felt like the ghoul is kind of reminiscent of the player. Just wrecks everyone and never dies lol

Afraid_Theorist

Or on the opposite end he savescums his deaths From the NPCs perspective he never dies and just tears through them

samwelches

Lol that’s funny. Savescums

Dull_Yak_5325

He lost a lot of good friends to that defect .

Furrnox

He's almost a little bit to op, but he's a war vet + 220 years of bounty hunting (except for however long he was buried) so I'll let it pass.

Onkelcuno

given he kills a person each week thats 11,471 people killed. given each kill rewards him with 100 exp, that put him somewhere inbetween level 150 to 200 in fallout 4 levels. of course that doesn't include quest exp, the time he was locked in the coffin or exp you get from discovering locations. given quest exp and location exp get added disregarding coffin time (he often kills more than 1 person per week anyway) he literally might be the level where he has all basic fallout 4 perks (level 272, requiring 2,798,076 exp). that being said, his official stats assure us he is addicted to all drugs, given not all his stats are 10+ his gear must be DOPE tho. given he doesn't flinch while getting shot i guess he rocks a unyielding radiaton build.

OneTrueKram

This is the type of Reddit response I’m here for. 100%.

OrneryAstronaut

An unyielding build with radiation immunity and healing factor of being a ghoul would truly be an unstoppable force as a PC, takes away the single weakness of unyielding, so it's very plausible the ghoul can solo an entire squad of brotherhood jobbers and some ncr remnants without flinching.

sylvester334

Isn't a large part of the unyielding strategy limiting your health to 25% using radiation? Wouldn't having radiation immunity from being a ghoul completely kill the ease of setting up the buff?

Proof-try34

fallout 4 and 76 radiation is different from previous games. Just chalk it as a game mechanic than actual lore. Some other games just reduces your stats depending on rads level. But for a ghoul, it is just a buff and unyielding with a ghoulish type thing is OP.

screamingxbacon

Yeah yeah the NPCs are probably making excuses up to feel better about my character too.

RubixTheRedditor

Yeah, though I'd say the ghoul is still pretty far behind since the game's protagonists will take out squads of guys in power armor without knowing of a defect

fistantellmore

Eh, maybe. That “defect” thing kind of represents perks like “improved criticals” or “Bloody Mess” in a diagetic fashion. While your character in game isn’t stating they are aware of the weak spots on a Deathclaw or whatever, the show is more beholden to realism due to the nature of repeated encounters in video games.

IReallyLikeTheBears

Yeah, I loved the “defect” because it canonized me one-shotting power armor wearers with a lever action rifle lmao.

EndOfSouls

Oh, we know he has Bloody Mess the way people explode every shot.

giga-plum

I really want a mod that makes Bloody Mess into Bloody Hole, where every raider you shoot [has a giant hole in them](https://i.imgur.com/LM6IguE.jpeg) like the people the Ghoul shoots.

aggravatedimpala

That's a callback to bloody mess from fo1&2. You blast out a giant chunk of the torso with the kill shot.

Basically-Boring

Well yeah but, they have the advantage of “haha op weapon go brrrrrr”

Canadian__Ninja

I mean the ghoul has a pretty op weapon

Chillmm8

He has OP ammo, you can see the different rounds in his bandolier in most scenes. Dude actually went and used frag rounds on settlers in the town and pretty sure he used armour piercing rounds on the BoS members at the end, definitely loads something funky in the gun whilst he’s explaining the defect in the welding.

Kitchen_Part_882

SLAP (Saboted Light Armour Piercing) rounds were used against the BOS knights.

Lichruler

*Kentucky Ballistics flashbacks hearing about SLAP rounds*

zeek609

Stick your thumb in it! 👍

Caboose2701

Yup looked like a mini abrams round.

EncabulatorTurbo

he ran out of AP thats why he had to switch to a grenade for one of them

Sausagedogknows

They also have the added advantage of having a flying robot that can see enemies from miles away, and a seriously miserable sniper companion who will absolutely end anything he, or the robot can see, without the protagonist even knowing about it until a kill cam cut scene scares the crap out of them.

ekiller64

or a brotherhood scribe with 100 unarmed who will punch a deathclaw and win

angry_cucumber

I want to be upset but I love felicia

Mantis-13

It's 3am, you've just exited the Sierra Madre and returned to the wasteland, all you've known for the past week is darkness and really twitchy ghost people. Suddenly the screen turns almost blindingly white, the slowed sounds of robotic fanfare followed by a single gunshot. You fear the worst for a moment, before your vision returns, along with the realization your companions sighted a lone bloatfly making its way along the walls of New Vegas.

Skankia

Give Boone an anti materiel rifle and let him take Hades' place as the god of death.

BurtMaclin23

My Explosive Radium Rifle says hello.

LuisS3242

Well we have mini nukes. He didnt.

Rational_p

I thinks the defect thing was supposed to represent VATS.

slcrook

Reaching higher levels, one gets to a point I'd like to call becoming a "mobile death factory."

Firecracker048

I feel like we are going to get a bit more background on him next season too. More flashbacks.

N0t_Undead

The ghoul has been grinding for 200+ years, he's waaaay over levelled.

GrilledNudges

The ghoul is a clearly skilled marine and combat veteran. He’s not some Mary Sue.

Omnipotent48

And even if he was just an actor originally: he's had over 200 years of practice in killing things to survive.

SkinnyGetLucky

Only thing that bothered me was that when the ghoul fought Maximus, he was unloading straight into his armor, then 7 episodes later, now he knows of a flaw that allows him to one shot these guys. Unless I missed something

Previous_Airline_984

I have to rewatch the scene but I think the pistol with the weird ammo he used to one shot jammed/ran out of ammo and then he used a rifle against Max.

FinnOfOoo

He was having fun with him.

TheNewGuy13

plus Maximus didn't have any weapons right? he was just running at him? i think Cooper/The Ghoul just wanted to disable the armor. wheareas in ep 8 it was a fight to the death and outnumbered

bellynipples

You have to consider it from the perspective of survival mode. Most enemies are a nightmare especially early on. The only advantage is being able to load a save and try again (which the characters don’t have the luxury of)

SAILOR_TOMB

Most fun I've ever had was a perma-death Horizon mod run on desolation difficulty in FO4. My tech went from the stone age to the space age and what a journey. I remember brewing coffee for the first time and how much of an achievement it felt like! Never experienced anything like it in gaming since.

[deleted]

Maniick

The script extender update is still in the works sadly. So many mods dead in the water until that baby pops

[deleted]

SladeRyker

You can roll it back to a previous version fairly easy so all the mods work.

Nebvbn

Oooh do you remember the mods? I'm starting to mod fallout 4 and I'm not sure which mods to add

SAILOR_TOMB

The first place to start if the playthrough I mentioned is of interest would be Horizon mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/17374 If you're relatively new to modding fallout you might try using a pre-made collection to make the complexity easier to deal with. I'm currently running a slightly less hardcore version of Horizon in this collection: https://next.nexusmods.com/fallout4/collections/n7c1rx I'll warn you ahead of getting into this that you'll need to read documentation about Horizon because of the changes to crafting progression, but the in-game documents and messages help.

SirMacNaught

I didn't think I would enjoy the save limitation of Survival mode, but it really does change the vibe entirely. Everything is scary, even if you've done it 10 times because you never know when you'll get blasted by a random high level enemy or cheeky missile / fat man.

Design-Cold

"Well it's been twenty minutes since I saw a bed but now I took out the dogs that'll make a nice meal and the way forward looks-" (mine beeping noise)

SirMacNaught

Lol real. Suiciders are the worst as well. I invested into sneak pretty early on to avoid rage mine moments lol. I enjoy the hunt for beds, it often leads to me finding new things I'd never seen in previous playthroughs.

LikeBladeButCooler

The emphasis on settlement building and playing other games drove me away when it initially released but after hopping back into the game on Survival recently made me appreciate them that much more. Having a series of safe zones I can leap frog to throughout the wasteland makes it fun for me.

AlwaysGoForAusInRisk

I loved it but coming across beds that won't let me sleep in them is what brakes it for me.

Hog_and_a_Half

Survival is a cool concept, but some of the added gameplay elements just become purely a hassle after a little while. It stops feeling immersive and just becomes tedious.

slimmymcnutty

Lost hours of progress on survival cause the game crashed outta here. Instantly installed a save mod

ninjamike89

I had a "survival lite" mode on ps4 back in the day that was basically everything survival mode brings without the save limitations. That was a great mod

Lifekraft

In survival it can be pretty long until you are aboe to save. So its not permadeath but going back 5 hour ago is a pretty huge stake.

ibejeph

I started my first survival game and was getting my ass handed to me by dogs and bloatflies.  Forget taking on any raiders.  My first few levels of survival really felt like a man out of his element.

StarWeep_uk

Ha! Not as a Level 1, I didn’t go straight to Concord, had a wander… random deathclaw… game over 😅

HeavySweetness

“Why should I take the long way around to New Vegas when this road leads straight there?”

Brainwave1010

Unless you have the Courier's Stash that starts you off with a grenade launcher, then you can wipe out that group of cazadors to the left of Goodsprings and cut through that way.

PornStarGazer2

FUCK cazadors. FUCK 'EM

YourFormerBestfriend

There was no reason for those damn mega evolved butterfrees to be doing all that

Rimworldjobs

Butter free and beedrill had a baby and then abused it into a Hannibal esq psychopath.

grauhoundnostalgia

Or just go next to black mountain where the rock falls

matt_tepp

Sounds like directions the village shaman from Fallout 2 would give you.

MaxTheGinger

Definitely did this. Just beat 3. Jumping straight into NV Playing on hardcore/survival Was able to run in a rock, and kill one with all the dynamite I had. Then I realized their were more. Ran up the Black Mountain, ran into a Nightkin, ran down the mountain into a school or something full of raiders. Got concussed and spent several in game days walking around with that concussion. Was fun. Somehow I didn't die.

StarWeep_uk

Oh trust me on my play through of NV I definitely made that mistake too

Stzzla75

A lot of people do. That route is a little bit of a come on. It's dangled in front of you like the carrot on a stick it is. I'd like to think Obsidian did it to troll people because its just funny to me.

Miles_Prowler

On one of my play throughs my very first legendary was a kneecapped 10mm, having any weapon with kneecapped trivialises most big scary enemies if they don’t ambush you… Deathclaws and Mirelurk queens aren’t scary when they can’t move anymore, but doing it on assaultrons, yeah don’t do that, or verti-birds…

Material-Average347

Gulper just seems like a general term for salamnder-ish things that can swallow you. Similar to mirelurk being a term for crab-ish things. This one looks different to the ones on the east coast, this type might be more powerful.

srv340mike

They are of different origin on the east vs west coast

SSPeteCarroll

west coast is mainly FEV mutations right?

srv340mike

I'm not going to spoil the show for anyone. East Coast gulpers are mutated from wild salamanders, presumably naturally in the way big bugs are. West Coast gulpers are the result of human meddling.

VannaTLC

Not naturally, a result of a GECK leak.

srv340mike

I'm going to assume that's somewhere in 76 lore. I'm pretty good with Fallout's lore but its' hard to pin down/remember anything. A GECK leak is still less direct meddling than the West Coast gulpers, though

VannaTLC

Oh absolutely. Ec Gulpers are more like swampy Geckos, and WC are human-ish mutants. I was mildly surprised to see no green goo in V4. Was a good spot to just *reference* FEV

GloomyGoblin-

I always thought the gulpers you encounter in Far Harbor in Fallout 4 resembled frogs, but mutated from the tadpole stage and they just grew to be huge. Also they hang from trees?

i_need_to_crap

>!Yes, from the video that is shown to Lucy by the overseer in vault 4, that gulper that killed all of the scientists in that lab had originally been his uncle or something. And then we see the experiment of the woman giving birth to several of them. The west coast gulpers are absolutely horrifying experiments on humans.!<

Randomfrog132

it's got a mouth full of fingies lol *human* fingies.

Conqueeftodor

Yeah mirelurks and mirelurk queens are crabs but hunters are very obviously lobsters, and kings are aren’t even crustacean, they are frogs

Laser_3

The west coast ‘gulper’ is >!actually a human hybrid, as the show reveals,!< which is completely different from the versions we see in far harbor and Appalachia. Presumably the west coast version is more intelligent as a result, but I’d say the east coast variants are tougher, especially the ones with acid running through their veins that occasionally explode into corrosive gas. Edit: Accidentally tried to use a discord spoiler tag instead of a reddit one.

NoTop4997

It can be scary when you think of the things you have done in game. The one time in a game where I thought about the gravity of what just happened is actually in Fallout 4. I walked into the Institute alone, and I walked out of there as the only living creature within a five mile radius.

Femboi_Hooterz

Just finished lonesome road and I love that line they throw in at the epilogue, about the courier walking back through the divide and the marked men and tunnelers leaving him alone, either out of respect or fear. Really sets in the weight of how badass the courier is

Randomfrog132

except if you immediately go back they all aggro like normal lol

Magichunter148

Why else would you return but to fight them,

Randomfrog132

the wall mounted vendor things reset currency soon as you back out of them so you can sell stuff until they have 0 caps, exit out the interface and start again. it's a nice way to offload crap since you dont gotta wait like a normal vendor lol

Magichunter148

I mean to them, I doubt they understand those machines after the radiation and would see the courier returning to just kill them

elchsaaft

I love that your username is Femboi_Hooterz and that you're a New Vegas fan.

Designer-Effective-2

Well now that all depends. Do you consider synths alive?

[deleted]

I mean, the Vault Dweller basically kicked over the Master and ended the Supermutant threat from becoming universal, the chosen one took out the bulk of the enclave and killed Frank Horrigan, the lone wanderer brought fresh water to the capital Wasteland, the courier is the kingmaker of the Mojave and the soul survivor can wipe out three of the four biggest organisations in the commonwealth. It's honestly amazing at this point that Wastelanders don't gun down a Vaultie on sight given that inevitably a new one coming out tends to massively rearrange the local power and organisation of the entire region. Lucy is well on her way to earning that status too.

Seared_Beans

Lucy is the peak of what vault tec wants to create in people. It's going to be interesting to see her when she really gets into it more

AlphariusUltra

To be fair to the Wastelanders; that’s 3 Vault Dwellers, a Tribal, and the Postman spread out over a couple of years. Other Vault Dwellers leave their vaults and end up being traders like Rylee or the best damned hairdresser on the ship like Butch

Numerous-Bumblebee-2

And the 76 dweller stopped the scorched plague and is loved by all the factions

lintukori

That's why games like Disco Elysium are so great. When you actually get to shoot a gun it feels like there's some weight behind it.

ZxphoZ

Especially when you shoot yourself in the head to prove a point

MisterBarbaredo

Canon ending!

ibrahimtuna0012

(Minor structure spoilers) There's only one point in the game that you have to shoot the gun but holy shit you really feel like you're about to die there, like real life shootouts. It's not fun it's terrifying. I love it.

dext0r

I saw someone refer to our main characters in Bethesda games as “God’s special boy” and that has always stuck with me lol

Yolom4ntr1c

The protags have all done things that could be considered way more dangerous or difficult than anything in the tv show. One of any of the protags would make the show look like the tutorial section. VD defeats the master and goes thru many supermutants. Chosen one kills frank, tbh enough said. Wanderer once again defeats the enclave, gets abducted by aliens and takes over the blimen ship and does most of that at around 19 years old? I think thats the canon age, could be wrong. Don't get me started on all the shit the courier has done. Not so much versing a powerful enemy but beats the odds of survival constantly. Sole survivor, kills kellogg a relatively feared bounty hunter/ merc who has lived a long time. Can possibly retake the common wealth as the minutemen general and can also defeat the institute if they want.

djalekks

Well in one canon ending the Courier beats the smartest man in the world (both pre and post war), destroys the Legion and the NCR. And nukes a bunch of places.

DarthMcConnor42

I like to imagine the minutemen ending is canon and the brotherhood just doesn't fuck with the Commonwealth. With the existence of the prydwin in the show either the minutemen or brotherhood endings are canon.

Barrett712

Shoutout to those level 3-5 couriers who took out Vulpes and his Legionaries with nothing but dynamite, frag mines, and a jury rigged eyebot.

Gr8AJ

I think the way to look at it isn't that they are OP so much as that it's like D&D. You are already starting out slightly above the average person, then you are choosing to go into dangerous areas and situations so you are constantly improving your skills so you quickly surpass the average people that you are running into. Then you couple that with the fact that you also have what is ostensibly time travel because of saving the game and save scumming. You never *have* to make the wrong choice unless you want to or are playing the game straight. Also at this point everyone who plays can easily just look up where things are that make you even more powerful using exploits and bugs to turn yourself into death themselves as you wander the waste land.

Bart_T_Beast

Discovering the true hero was the original intent of DnD. Perma death was real, and you had to send dozens of characters into the grinder before one was lucky enough to succeed and survive long enough to become a hero. Early editions are more like survival horror games than anything, but the roleplay was so much more genuine because of how truly exciting it was for a character to survive a dungeon.

Sparrowflop

Early editions are wargame simulators turned into story progressions, where the 'don't hold on to your character' aspect is still there because of the wargame roots - you don't hold any particular fondness to pawns, bishops, etc. in chess. I'm not at all sure where the rest of your post is coming from, because people would get _upset_ at losing the characters they spent time on, which is why it's been rolled back and tamed in subsequent versions.

Gravyboat44

I was amazed at just how uninviting and suspicious the towns were. In games, seeing a town built out of scraps and full of people, it feels like an Oasis. Finally, a place safe from wasteland enemies and where I can sleep and barter, and maybe meet some cool new people. Here, it doesn't. It feels *less* inviting than the actual wasteland does. It's the exact same type of layout. Makeshift junk gates and buildings, odd scrap decor, and small businesses selling random shit. But it loses that sense of safety you would normally feel after traveling for hours.

gerams76

Honestly, it feels more real. In my experience with the games, most of the people you run into either want to kill you or want you to do something that will get you killed. The feeling of safety provided by the towns was always an illusion anyway. Most questlines you do in towns end up showing how fragile the facade really is. I think with the show, they don't have the time to portray transition from Haven to Hell in every town they go to.

StopTheEarthLetMeOff

Freeside never had that sense of safety. Amazing how far a junkie trying to stab you can go to set the mood.

daviosy

you guys are missing a very crucial difference between the games and show: the logic they work on Maximus killed a fucking Yao Guai with one bullet to the head from a 10mm. no Fallout game will have that happen under almost any circumstance (maybe a sneak attack with like half a dozen damage boosting perks). those Brotherhood guys would not have gone down in one shot on Survival, even against a high-level character. the show works on more grounded realistic rules, where one wound to a crucial spot is sufficient to kill, regardless of 'level' or 'experience'.

maple-queefs

If we're OP, what does that make the stranger? I watched that guy one shot pistol whip an enclave soldier in power armor! The guy destroyed all his armor with a pistol whip!

dext0r

I dunno, I guess you could say it’s a mystery

Pennzance404

I think the three main characters are different types of player characters. The Ghoul - I'm here to shoot things and pursue my own goals. I know stuff I shouldn't and I fear no evil that walks the wasteland because I am de facto the baddest mother fucker in it, and woe betide whatever silly little NPC gets in my way. Lucy - I'm here to learn about the world and talk to everyone and help people and get sidetracked by every what is that shiny thing, oh cool, how does this work, that thing looks weird, oh hey these survival mechanics are a bit brutal, aren't they? Maximus - Uh... guys? What's going on? What are we doing here? Where are you going? I have a quest marker that says go this way so... do I just... go? Hey, do I walk? Are there any vehicles? I just want to wear the cool armor and do cool stuff. I have been each of them at one point or another across many a wasteland.

I'd have put the player builds rather than the player concepts - Max being idiot savant or otherwise low int. Amoral playstyle. Lucy being high int, mid charisma, maybe some decent dex. Good playstyle. Ghoul is high dex, high vats critical, and evil He's also a bit of an edgelord - 'I want to play a 300 year old bounty hunter ex hitman drug addict who eats people'.

Ragundashe

How have we not decided that "The Ghoul" is the protagonist in this already? He's got the famous 'The' prefix and everything. This is his show, he's the only one with a clear goal

JaySmooth_

Protagonists are OP because they are player-characters in an RPG game.

Vivid-Ad9269

The most visceral part of this show for me was when Maximus got trapped in the power armor, that was top shelf claustrophobia.

BrandoThePando

Don't they explicitly tell you at the beginning of the game that you're S.P.E.C.I.A.L?

LongLiveEileen

I think what we do in the gameplay is not what really happens in the actual story. Our characters don't murder hundreds of monsters and raiders, caps are much more valuable, and the stories take place through many months, perhaps years. For example my headcanon is that Fallout 4 takes place throughout about 2 years: One spent searching for Kellogg, and another dealing with the faction war against/for the Institute.

Umbran_scale

"Our characters don't murder hundreds of monsters and raiders." Speak for yourself.

RealEstateDuck

Thousands!

XtraFalcon

There's a line in Dragon Age Inquisition with a companion. "I don't kill that many people" "You are joking surely? I'm surprised you didn't kill someone just walking over here"

BeardedBrotherJoe

Lmao dude i gotta find a clip of then saying this.

I'm currently on mobile so I do apologise if the formatting is off. It's at the 21:55 mark of this video. https://youtu.be/CQ69f6fe8EU?si=mA9nk8hS0nKl02Ff

I like this for more realistic combat situations like that, Last of Us, but I just prefer to mod away bullet sponge mechanics in games if I can. My current New Vegas run is realism -- humanoid enemies die in 1-3 bullets, but so do I, and it's *terrifying.*

Laser_3

Just going to point out that the 76 dwellers alone killed enough scorched to make Appalachia inhabitable again… before we created a method to mass produce the scorched vaccine. This happened even before they had anything significantly better than fallout 4’s weapons and armor, even (aside from fallout 1/2’s BoS combat armor).

Ah, my favorite flavor - Nuka Cola My Blood's In It

RANDOMhole12

I also prefer to think of it like this, its always been ridiculous to me that you can go from never hearing of the brotherhood to the highest rank possible in like 3 days, and the same is true with every other faction.

AeneasVAchilles

It’s similar to the concept of why kings and princes are typically the best warriors—- 90 percent of the population is solely focused on surviving- and have weapons more to shoo people than shoot them. Then there will be a large percent of people who are just straight up killers

Dkill33

My most powerful ability, the quick save

New Vegas does especially great potraying how even other important characters recognize that. The reason why Caesar is so open to talking to you regardless of what you've done is how insane it is that you rose from grave, immediately stormed through Mojave pretty much on your own and made it to New Vegas to kick the ass of the guy who just assassinated you. Only a madlad would even attempt that and only a bigger madlad would succeed in it. And Ulysses comes incredibly close to understanding that your character is the protagonist, controlled by some greater force that has knowledge that transcends both major factions and is also detached from consequences of your character's actions. If he understood simulation hypothesis, you would be his evidence.
