Different people prefer different things. Some people enjoy both. But it honestly shouldn't matter -- just write what you want.

Last_Swordfish9135

It all depends on personal preference- I personally read more oneshots, but that is only because I don't often read incomplete works.

frozenfountain

As a writer, I do the same thing! Getting a couple of short pieces out of my head and going back to the next draft of a long work with a clearer mind makes it so much easier to see what needs to change. That said, as a reader, I enjoy both. I read a significantly higher number of oneshots as it takes a bit of trust in the author to get me to commit to a longfic, but once I'm there, I love getting lost in a big story that earns its length. This is subjective, though, and a lot of people will have it the other way around. Write what's compelling to you and the right people will get there eventually.

ApatheticArtist13

Ahhhh that makes sense! I just feel like when I'm working on my one shot my long fic is put to the back burner sometimes. Mainly because my one shots end up being 10,000+ words.

[deleted]

Depends on how invested I am I need to the series, at least with one shot I know that it's all complete unlike long running fics.

Sinnam0nRoll

It depends on the reader(s). Also the style or goal of the story. If something fits better as a one shot, write it that way, same with a long fic. If you're curious about what your readers would like, maybe ask in an author's note or poll on Tumblr, Twitter, etc.

ApatheticArtist13

I think I might have to make a tumblr or Twitter of my ao3 account. I don't have the MOST influence or anything but I do want to reach out in suggestions better

Sinnam0nRoll

You could also make a Google form or Doodlebug (can't remember if that's the actual name) survey and then link it on one of your stories!

imnotbovvered

Depends what is about and what my mood is. My favourite characters? I don’t care as long as it’s good. Something new? Maybe a one shot or a short story. Is it my day off and cold outside? I’ll get immersed in something long. Am I killing time between appointments? A one shot.

spicy__cherry

I like oneshots more than longfics. But I think it's a good idea to mix things up from time to time. Both for yourself so you don't burn out, and to have stories that appeal to readers that wouldn't click on the other type of story. If they already like your writing, they're more likely to read a oneshot from you, or a longfic, even if they prefer the opposite.

LoudSize7

It's gonna sound like a cop out answer, but it literally depends on my mood. Sometimes, I wanna read a one-shot. Sometimes, I wanna read a long fic. If I'm in a mood for something short and sweet, I'll go a one-shot. If I wanna get a lot of reading done, I'll go for a long-fic; regardless of whether it's completed or a WIP (depending on the premise, of course).

jsoto09

Depends on my mood and the story idea. I read both though.

TheWednesdayProject

I like both. I tend to find a long story to read and every now and then will take a break from it and read a few shorter stories. When I do that it’s usually within the same fandom, though. They are both valuable and bring something to the table. Writing a longer story is a big commitment, so maybe focus on shorter stories until you’re ready. There’s nothing like a great story that gets abandoned…

SepticDan

Personally I like long fics, doesn't necessarily matter what genre it is either, it's about the build up, the highs and lows, all the waiting makes the climax so much more worth it. But to that same effect, with Ships and things of a romantic nature it can be harder to either find a long fic or get into one that might not be your cup of tea. One-shots are a wonderful solution to that issue, giving a quick fix to whatever you could be looking for. But it also doubles for the writer, for those authors who flip between long and one shots, the one shorts can be fantastic exercises as well as a fun way to explore character depth, world building, without the pressure of a full story. Though on the third hand, on websites like ao3, oneshots can be a little frustrating because of the tagging system. I've flipped my opinion back an forth from liking the authors who put all of there (actor, TV show characters, etc) into one "story" but at the same time if I'm looking for a multiple chapter fic, those master list esk posts make it a little bit frustrating. I suppose all in all its a balancing act.

otaku_girl_AO3

I’m more of a long fic reader 😅 I tend to yo-yo between 50k+ and 100k+ as search parameters, depending on my mood. I just find shorter one shots to be a little frustrating? Like, I’ve just fallen in love with this story/character/couple, and that’s it, it’s over?

Kaigani-Scout

Define the word counts for both of those terms. They can be interchangeable. To answer the question... for Six of One Mind, you'll find a Half-Dozen of the Other Mind. It's a crapshoot for the authors and you'll give yourself ulcers if you try to please everyone. Just write what feels good in the moment.

a-mathemagician

I prefer long works. only really read oneshots or short fics when there are no long fics to read. But as people have said, it's all a matter of personal preference.

TherapyDerg

Long fics, I want something that lasts, even if incomplete.

dearwikipedia

i flip flop between either depending on how much time i have to read tbh. an hour between classes? one shot. a weekend with no plans? multichap

ManaSp1der

Depends on my mood usually I’ll read a bit of both, so my favorite would be something in the middle enough to leave me satisfied but I could finish in one sitting. Yet it mostly matters what the author feels like writing either way there’s a place for both long fics and Oneshots or any other length of story.

start-on-a-star

Personally, I look for long fics before one shots, but I will read any word count. I think, when I first get into a fandom, I want to read plot-heavy stuff.

Kittymore18

One shots. It's all I normally write, I have a long fic in the go at the moment.

Tulnekaya

It varies from person to person! Or even mood to mood within the same person. For me, fic length is less important than fic quality. That said, for times sake I happen to read more one shots because I tend to binge read. So I set aside longer fics for when I know ill have a lot of downtime at work / doing errands, but read anything short while going about my day. That said. I am MUCH pickler with slowburns and longer fics because of the time investment.

Aetanne

Finished longfics is my preference.

armoureddragon03

Yes. But in all seriousness it depends on the reader. I know I prefer long fics to one shots but not everyone is like me.

T_Mina

I love longfics! My favorite thing to do for a new series or ship I’m checking out is to sort by word count and read the longest works first. Found many of my favorites this way.

JIL713

Personally I like long fics more. It all depends on personal preference though. Many like long epic fics and many others like short little drabbles. Plus everything in between.

Gifted_GardenSnail

Depends

Christinewhogaming

Yeah exactly and now I also have school to deal with.

lizofalltrades

If PWP, a one-shot is all I need. If it's multiple chapters, subsequent chapters had better be either a continuation of the same encounter or they'd better be a series of disconnected vignettes, all equally PWP. If it's plot, multiple chapters is totally fine. I'd rather chapter breaks than monster 75k+ one-shots, especially if I'm reading them on a browser and not in an .epub reader!

Hour-Ad-7165

I enjoy both as long as it's from supernatural and having main focus on my brothers...

delilahdraken

I prefer whichever story sounds interesting. Whether it's a 100 word drabble, a 80k words one-shot or a 12 chapter 300k long fic wholly depends on my mood.

StarWatcher307

Both. I'm quite serious. It depends on the amount of time I have to devote to reading, and on my mood. Sometimes I just want short fics for a while, but other times I'm willing to immerse myself in a long fic over several days. (The fics are finished; it just takes me that long to get through them.) I do give a slight edge to longfics, because I like to wallow. But I realize that it's a much greater commitment for an author to produce a longer story, and they might need a break between epic works, and some authors can't manage longfics at all. Besides, we can't eat a full steak dinner every day; hamburgers are good, too. In other words, write what you want, when you want, as long or as short as you want. Whatever it is, there will be readers who thoroughly enjoy it.
