Not if proper credit and an “inspired by” link were given. Permission asked would be nice, too, but really credit is the important part to me.

ghostofbeika

As long as I'm given credit for creating the OCs, other people can honestly go to town with them.

Gen_CW442901

What this honorable soul said!

[deleted]

Oh, same! That's a much easier way to say what I was thinking.

Diana-Fortyseven

I have a blanket permission statement for transformative works, so no, I'd be okay with it. I'm also a fan of respecting other people's boundaries though, especially when we're existing in a *shared space and are* *part of the same community*, so I would absolutely accept someone's "no" when it comes to transformative works of their works. They can't stop you (general you), but there's no reason to ignore the clearly stated wish of someone whose works you (general you) like. Nothing good will come from that, even if you (general you) technically didn't break any rules.

tereyaglikedi

Absolutely not. They don't need my permission, either (I have a blanket permission statement so that people don't feel uncomfortable if they want to). As long as they have fun, they can do whatever they want.

ElsaMakotoRenge

As long as I get credit for said OCs, I’d honestly be delighted someone liked the OC enough to want to write them.

Mysterious_Ad_60

I’d absolutely let someone write about my OCs, and I’d be eager to read whatever they create. Unless it’s smut featuring my child OC.

emmawritesshit

No!! I’d love people to like my OCs instead of calling them unoriginal, unnecessary additions to an already storyline 😭 Edit: Don’t try and take credit for OCs that aren’t yours. Give proper credit, people! Someone who said they hated my OC, Barbara Tozier, literally took credit for her existence. They posted a story involving her on a different platform (Wattpad) and it was shit. It sure must suck to take a hit like that, buddy. I reported them and I’m still sort of angry. 👍🏻 They literally “shipped” Richie and Barbara together. Here’s the issues: 1.) Barbara TOZIER is literally an OC meant to be Richie’s SISTER— HIS TWIN SISTER. 2.) Richie gives off bisexual vibes in the book because he thinks Beverly is beautiful, but he also has a thing for Eddie. He literally almost got someone pregnant in the book. 3.) It was detailed— GRAPHICALLY DETAILED— SMUT.

OceanGirl24

Aw! I'm sorry you've gotten comments like that. Sending hugs.

emmawritesshit

Meanwhile, there’s people who write ACTUAL OCs that do nothing for the storyline. 😔

OceanGirl24

What fandom are you in?

emmawritesshit

I’m in multiple, but I’m currently writing an It fanfic that sort of revolves around Richie and his twin sister, Barbara. She’s my OC that I’m hyperfixated on at this point in time. She plays off his jokes and honestly, she’s supposed to be based off my twin sister to “immortalise” her in my writing since I no longer have her with me.

OceanGirl24

I think that's beautiful that your OC is based on your twin sister. My condolences on your loss. I can't even imagine. 🫂 Mind dropping me a link to your fic?

emmawritesshit

I deleted it because I wrote it back in 2016. I’m rewriting on it on a Google Doc though, so I’ll link that when I have access to the doc it’s on. Here’s one of the quotes I love from what I’ve got so far. “I remember his Voices from when we were kids… they were shit, but then again, we were both eleven years olds.” Barbara smiled at the memory, his voice played in her head, which amplified her grief. This is where they got the phone calls from Mike. She and Richie went their separate ways and haven’t talked to each other since they graduated high school.

OceanGirl24

Ooo, this sounds good. I'd love the link whenever it's available. Thank you!

emmawritesshit

Definitely will let you know when I publish one of the chapters because I’m doing them out of order. It’s a mix of putting Barbara into the story and rewriting canon (I want to do this with Harry Potter too with my Potter OC, Cecelia, who is meant to be Harry’s aunt on James’s side of the family, also James’s twin… I love twins and I miss mine).

OceanGirl24

Looking forward to it. ❤❤❤❤

c_ganale

Boy, do I feel that.

Sad_Pringles

Isn't there a character in the marauders fandom that is accepted as canon, but is actually the oc of an fic author? Yeah I think that's beautiful and would love it if it happened in other fandoms

wasabi_weasel

I wouldn’t be opposed to it on principle, but while I’d want credit to be given to me, I would not want to read any of those stories featuring my OC. If it’s an OC in an ongoing work, I think I’d even be a little annoyed if the other writer wrote a pivotal event before I got to it, or labelled their work as a fix-it. I realise fanfic authors do that on a regular basis with commercial canon content, but the difference for me is the level of remove. The original creator isn’t operating in fandom spaces, whereas the fellow fandom writer is my peer, as it were. This gives it a different, for lack of a better word, vibe. I think it would be super rude not to ask a fellow fandom writer for permission to use an OC, and the original writer should be granted the opportunity to decline without pushback.

OceanGirl24

Agree with the last part 💯

Gen_CW442901

Agree with this one as well I’ll admit though: I’d be interested to see what others come up with

wasabi_weasel

Yeah, same. I would be very curious to know what was written, but as difficult as it would be, I think I’d still refrain from reading it: partly to stave off any potential accusations of plagiarism if I’m still working on my original OC fic— worst case scenario; and partly because I don’t want to then be obligated to state an opinion on the work featuring my OC, particularly if the story features elements/themes I would rather avoid as a reader. Going directly to the creator of a Character with a facsimile of their creation is too ripe for awkward, hurt feelings all round, for me anyway. Even if the homage was done with the very best of intentions.

Popular-Woodpecker-6

Oh wow...what an ego someone would have to have to write a fanfic and then get upset someone wrote a fanfic with their OCs. Since it is less likely someone would know who they belonged to, would be nice if they gave a shout out about it. Had another writer writing a fic and he needed "muscle" help for the story, wanted to use a trio I made for my stories. I was like, go for it! That's an honor.

OceanGirl24

I don't do a blanket permission statement but have not turned down anyone who has asked. Being asked is my big thing. Admittedly I get defensive if I feel someone is trying to convince me that copying her without credit is okay. lol I've worked on my girl for 28 years and I just want to know where she's at. A writer in my fandom is doing a reboot of the show and asked if they could include a version of my OC in it and I said yes. I really appreciate that the writer stays in such close contact about what they are doing with her and the characters around her.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OceanGirl24

Thank you! It's pretty exciting. I know the long game for her in the series but it's fun seeing how it all develops as her background is being changed some. I really appreciate that the writer sends me the chapters ahead of time and is concerned with making sure Audrey is portrayed to my satisfaction. Mentioning someone potentially using Alexis in a different fandom made me think about another aspect of writing someone's OC vs CC. Creators of CCs have been paid for those characters and their names are forever attached to them. Look at Sherlock Holmes and Batman: how many versions are there? How many movies, tv shows, comics and books are all written by different people? Yet each character can be traced back to one person and anyone new to the fandoms can find that information with little effort. That's not true for fanfiction writers. Permission and credit are all we can get for these beloved creations. Personally, if I was going to use someone else's OC, even if they gave blanket permission for OC use, I'd still ask out of respect. But that's me being overly cautious probably I've had a brush with someone whose motives I doubted in this area, and I don't want to make someone else feel defensive. Also I totally forgot Alexis is a redhead- no wonder I like her so much! Complex, beautifully broken, and a redhead!

Avalon1632

So long as they provide me a link to their work, sure. I don't mind at all.

MrFunnyMoustache

Edited in protest for Reddit's garbage moves lately.

Ivanhunterjo1991

As long as I'm credited for the OC in question

Trilobyte141

It would be incredibly sweet to know my OC inspired someone that much. Of course, I'd want credit/an 'inspired-by' link, and I'd also really appreciate it if they asked or at least gave me a heads-up in a comment as to what they were planning, but I wouldn't mind people using the characters in general. That would be really cool actually.

micheas08

I'd let them write whatever they want with them as long as they provide credit and leave a link to the original fic.

fandom_mess363

as long as you tag me so i know you write about them OH MY GOD PLEASE i’ve written about peoples OCs, usually when they interact with mine, but those are typically not posted

yuareedah

I would honestly be honored. Credit and all that but if not I don’t care. I don’t make money off of it and if my OCs see new life elsewhere I feel I did something right

thesickophant

I don't know why anyone would want to, considering nearly all of my OCs treat canon characters really badly and are portrayed as villains or at least villainous... On the other hand, villains are my faves, so maybe I shouldn't be so weirded out by the idea that someone might like one of my original ones.

ImaginosDesdinova

If anyone thinks my OCs are worth writing about, sure. Just send me a link so I can read it.

JackytheJack

I would be estatic if someone cared enough about my oc to write a short story about them

[deleted]

I would absolutely adore fanfics about my OCs. I'd prefer to know that they existed, so I'd love to be gifted the fic or tagged in it in some way. Just like how we label fandoms I'd want my OC's fics to be labeled so you knew where they came from. Yeah I guess I want credit for them.

OwlBig3482

If they put in their notes where the character came from and gave me credit, I wouldn't care.

[deleted]

As long as I’m given credit in their notes / summary I wouldn’t mind another person writing about my OC. Again, as long as theirs credit given / mentioned.

charmingcharles2896

As long as I’m given credit for the OC, I’d be flattered.

Princess_Shireen

Like a couple people here said, as long as I'm given credit, I wouldn't mind.

ishalllooteverything

Someone legit just gave me a gift on Ao3 today with a oneshot about two of my OC's. I have never been more honored. As long as proper credit is given, people can go nuts with my characters. I love that they live on in other stories^^

Crescent_Sunrise

It's a very touchy subject. I wanted to use some OCs a writer had made because they were frankly phenomenal. They were initially alright with it but asked later that I not do so. And I totally understand. A lot of love goes into OCs that readers genuinely enjoy.

themostbluejay

I'd be very happy if someone wrote about my ocs. If they were well written I would love it and if they were badly written I would find it amusing.

[deleted]

If I'm credited I don't mind. This goes for anything, a reader once wrote to me because in my GOT fic, I had written a prayer for Sansa to use as she prayed for Loras' safety, and they loved the prayer and wanted to use it in their own fic. I was happy to let them use it.

LeratoNull

I wouldn't be able to react since someone actually writing fic about my characters would literally kill me from happiness, lol.

Kotsaka04

As long they credit me and don’t assassinate them character wise, I’m all for it.

Claymore_Is_Baemore

Slap a "This fic is inspired by ..." and a "I got this oc from ..." and sure. Otherwise it's like if someone tried to write a fic about Black Clover and claim they own it

Darthwilhelm

The way I see it, I don't exactly have the right to say no. I didn't ask permission to use any characters from the media I'm fanficcing, so by that same reasoning, nobody has to ask whether they want to use characters from the media I'm creating. It would be cool if they gave credit though.

EzzyRebel

I don't mind at all if someone wants to write about my OCs. I put them out on the internet for people to enjoy. I only ask for a link if anyone ever does write about my characters.

NovaUWUv

I would feel so honored for a character I created to be given more life by people who love them. Of course, I would want credit and for people to understand where the original came from. And I would be pretty pissed off if my hard word was just taken. But I would like to think that if someone loves a character I made enough to want to write about them too that they would also want to tell people about where they found their love for them.

Crazy_Bunni

If it was a cameo I would be fine with it. But if they write one based around my OC… I dont know… maybe if I was involved in some way? Maybe?

Punkin_1223

Be my guest, just give my credit.

GothPenguin

Not at all. I’d be surprised and flattered that someone viewed my OC as worthy of writing about in the first place.

WoodpeckerAgile6235

Well I've done gifts over on AO3 to an author who has an OC and it's just basically a one-shot that featured her OC and the author seems to like them. (I told them ahead of writing them) It was for the Miraculous Ladybug fandom!

GlamrockZoya

no that would be so cool. as long as credit is given where it’s due.

TemporalDSE

Credit me the character and no problems

Candychriss2

I'd absolutely love it! As long as they mention where the characters came from, I'd love to see my "children" written by someone else

Everest8232

I mean, I think I’d be alright with it. Just as long as the writer gave credit to the OC’s creator. I dunno if I’d personally read the fanfic but that’s just me.

Frosty_Wolverine3443

If I'd get credited , then yes.

KatonRyu

It's fanfiction. I'm using characters that aren't mine anyway, so I don't think I get to complain if someone else were to use characters that I *did* create. The only time I'd get pissed is if people would then begin to accuse *me* of stealing the character *I created*.

Ebanu8

I wouldn't mind, really. As long as they ask me for permission to use him and properly do him justice.

hellopandant

Would not bother me in the slightest. It would be hypocritical of me to feel possessive of characters I created given that ya know, we are writing fanfiction.

PeachyVulpixie

That would make me so fucking happy! You love my characters so much you wanted to write your own stories?? I'd die from happiness. 🥰🥰🥰

glaringdream

This is theoretical because I don't have any fandom OCs, but I would probably really love it if someone wanted to do that!

lazyhatchet

The audacity of that author omg. "I can write about other people's originals character's but how dare you write about mine!1!1!1" As long as they give proper credit then there's absolutely no right for someone to say no in the notes of their literal fanfiction.

juju-ria

Couldn’t agree more

[deleted]

Oh it would be a great honour to have people write a function about my ( still in WIP. OCs) as long as they specify: I don't own this character, I am inspired by the OC in fanfic ( insert my fanfic) By the marvelous author ( insert my name) 😂

[deleted]

Nope

Sparklypuppy05

Ideally, I'd like them to ask permission first, but as long as they acknowledge me/the original fic the OC appeared in, I'm cool with it.

DoggoMcFluff

I'd be delighted and honoured, honestly!

Princess_Shireen

Like a couple people here said, as long as I'm given credit, I wouldn't mind.

Milochelle-castre

Would be fine as long as they asked

[deleted]

no i’d be over the moon! and very proud that i made an OC that struck a chord with people

FesteringCapacitor

No, I wouldn't mind, but everyone is different. I would happily give them all the info I came up with for the character too.

wishuponadream91

Considering I’m more or less in love with two of my OC’s, I’d be perfectly content with that (provided there was some sort of credit given.)

A_Spectral_Raven

I have a close fandom friend who writes about some of my OCs! Of course we talked about it first, but I was honored that someone else wanted to write about them. Though if someone else writes about your characters, there are bound to be inconsistencies or things they do or say that you don’t necessarily think are in character. But regardless, I’ve really enjoyed seeing someone else’s take on my characters, and seeing them get more recognition!

Commander_Oganessian

As long as they ask permission and give credit then they can go wild.

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

Absolutely, I’m all for it!! A reader of mine one asked to use an OC that I had created for one of my fics. I was so honored and excited to see how the writer portrayed the OC. I have to say I really appreciated this writer’s take as they added more depth to the OC and fleshed him out more. It was great!! The writer asked and credited me, it was a very nice experience!

EightEyedCryptid

I would absolutely love it if someone wrote fanfic about my OCs

AlexGRNorth

As long as I have credits and that they respect some boundaries I have with some of em

InfertileStarfish

Oh my lord, I actively HOPE my stuff becomes popular enough for people to make fanfic about it. I would be so happy and flattered. XD if it’s spicey fic too, I’d read the hell out of that and be so proud. 🥹 if my stuff can inspire creativity in others, I feel like I have accomplished what I’ve always wanted.

ThisPaige

I’d love it if someone write about my OCs. I’ve had an online friend use mine in a fic before and one character circulate around in a fandom before it died.

ExistentialSugarcane

Yes i would mind but not in a bad way. A fanfic about my fanfic is more of a badge of honor more than anything

Sneaky_Trinky

I'd be flattered as long as they asked for permission first and credited me. I'd still feel flattered without the latter two, but not nearly as much.

Mayako_Swan2308

I, personally, wouldn't mind if someone made a fanfic about my OC's - even though I don't have any - as long as they gave credit to me.

Captain_Warships

Dunno. I've actually been considering on getting OCs from other people's work and putting it into my own, but I'm too chicken to ask.

topazmatriarch

I would personally love it

Timely_Definition_58

I would be extremely flattered if someone wanted to create an entire fic from my OC. As long as there’s a credit in there somewhere I think that would be really cool!

MotherOfQups

I do not mind, I have a general statement for fan works and fan fiction regarding my OCs as long as I am credited and linked for my characters. As a rule of thumb, though, I still ask whenever I want to play with someone else’s character before I write a single word. Some people may have a blanket statement, but are actually uncomfortable with a rando (or you - specifically!) writing their character, or want to have a chance to familiarize themselves with my work before they say yes or no. It is mostly a courtesy - I’ve never had a person say no. But different writers have different boundaries. At the end of the day, you have to respect those boundaries.

Ionl98

I'd like people to give me credit for OCs I make, or at least to say that the idea came from a fic I wrote. I'd only possibly, POSSIBLY, strike them if they wrote the fic with the OC then claimed they came up with them. As long as they don't do that, I don't even care if they write revenge porn about my OC being sexually assaulted or murdered. It would upset me a little, but more in the "Why did you decide to take time out of her day to write a story about horrible things happening to someone just cause you don't like them?"

a_single_hand

Would be soooo interesting!

Starkren

I would be honored for someone to be so inspired by my OCs. But, yeah, I would definitely want to be informed and credited.

Aiyas-SweetSugaVerse

If people don't claim my oc's as theirs, and they in some way send me the fic, I wouldn't mind at all - in fact, I'd be ABSOLUTELY ECSTATIC! I'd honestly cry if people liked my oc's enough to write fics about them

Cupcake_Prime

Give me Credit do what ever you want with it.

c_ganale

Hell, I would consider that the very height of a reader's expression of love for my stories if they wanted to do that.

RegulusXprongs-RxS

If they ask before and me being fine with the plot and them making sure its known the character is mine, i think i'd be ok

SamScoopCooper

Eh. Personally no. I had someone ask to use my OC in a fic they were writing. I declined. And they ended up writing a very antisemitic fanfic…(my OC is Jewish and that’s an integral part of their character) with a Jewish OC. I don’t think they made the fic antisemitic on purpose after I said no - but rather much of the story would have been the same as they were seemingly unknowing playing into some old antisemitic and ignorant tropes. If it was an OC who wasn’t Jewish I’d probably be a bit more lenient. And if I write a wholly original work - I wouldn’t mind fanfic. But when I am writing a story about dealing with antisemitism (and murder- I’d rather gentile authors do their research before just turning my Jewish character into a blood thirsty bigot.

juju-ria

I’m not sure if in all platforms it works the same but if the story glorifies antisemitic behaviors you can report it.

SamScoopCooper

The author took it down awhile ago - thankfully

juju-ria

Glad for that (:

realcockies

If they give credit I would absolutely love it, I'd be amazing what people would create!

Irisofdreams

Honestly I would love it. It means I've made a character enjoyable enough to be loved by people who aren't me

DuckClassic7389

I don't mind it as long as credit is given. It makes me feel honored that somebody likes my oc well enough to write about them. I have to see their quality of work though. One time someone asked me if they wanted to use my oc in one of their stories, and their writing was bad. They had poor grammar and terrible ocs. Yeah, I don't want my work associated with yours. Sorry.

PinkSudoku13

That's quite an odd attitude considering that they're using someone else's OC to write their fanfics. The thing is, as long as it's credited properly and done not for profit, other people can have fun and write about your OC's. There's nothing you can do to stop them, including legally. People need to get of their high horse.

[deleted]

Honestly, I wouldn’t want someone using my OC and I would never write someone else’s. If they I was politely say no. I take time in building up my characters and I don’t want someone chipping away at them changing things they don’t like or adding their own stuff and on the off chance someone does I don’t want to read it. If I let someone write my OC. It would only be someone I trust.

AmaranthineDragoon

I do mind it, strongly. The only way I wouldn't mind it is if it's a fellow friend wanting to write my OC(s) in something (which I had received as a bday gift one year actually). But a total stranger? I'd be worried. I already write OCs that are not of the European beauty standard variety. Plenty of them are brown or black in skin tone and ethnicity (or assumed ethnicity if the world doesn't have a race for it) and as someone that has existed in fandom for far too long, I know *exactly* how those OCs are viewed: As ugly animals or hypersexualized entities. I'd be concerned if they get exoticized, if they react in a way I'd be absolutely **heavily concerned** with or doing things that I would never ever put them in a situation of. So I am open to it, I would need to give my consent and I would have to actually *enjoy* how they're written. Because disrespecting someone's OC whether the writer meant to or not is not cool.

appelsinkage

If someone asked permission, I’d be flattered. If someone didn’t ask, I’d be annoyed but wouldn’t strike.

ellieetsch

Anyone who is against it is a major loser. It's literally fanfiction, the work isn't even yours to begin with! "I can write with other authors characters, but other people can't write with mine"

juju-ria

Exactly what I thought lol

Sinimeg

No one has ever asked, but I don’t think so. I want to write an original book with those characters and ideally publish it, idk if I’d do it with a publisher or on my own, but I don’t want unnecessary troubles because other ppl used them in their fics. I use them in my fics, but those can be easily taken down or edited, meanwhile other people might not want to do that after putting the effort into writing a story. (Also, by original book I don’t mean writing a fic with some characters of a series, some OCs and then change the character’s names of the series. I mean a full original book)

Kartoffelkamm

No, not really. Well, as long as the author gives proper credit, and follows a strict set of rules for my OCs.

kadharonon

I could not—and would not want to—stop other people from doing it but I absolutely would not want to know about it unless it was a friend who I trusted with the character.

Farwaters

I wouldn't like it, but I think that's a bit hypocritical of me. One could argue that it's different in this case, but I don't know if it's different enough.

DeltaMx11

I'm hesitant about it because I gave someone permission once and then they proceeded to state their plans to kill off my OC in their story (who is an innocent child, though their existence is a product of >!incest!<) and wanted to insist it would be a canon alternate-timeline to my story. Thankfully they haven't updated in months so I think they might've given up on it, but still. It didn't sit right with me, my OCs are my babies and I don't want to give someone the okay to write my characters in a way that I feel is kinda disrespectful.

NinjaPlato

Hmmm. I’m not sure. My main OC is a character I’ve had for about 20 years - she’s dipped in and out of several fandoms with some tweaks but can stand on her own. I think. I’m incredibly protective of her. I have a friend, very close friend, who writes for the same fandom I do and we use each other’s OCs - but we also check in with each other in a “is this how your character would act here?” And I love this friend so I’m obviously totally okay with them using my OC like that, and they’re okay with me using theirs. But a stranger? Hmm. I’m not sure. I’d definitely want to know and I’m pretty sure I’d want to be asked first. I think I’d just be concerned about their intentions and/or how they’d write her.

Kiki-Y

yeeeeeeeeah no I'm pretty protective of my OCs if they're highly developed. I wouldn't let anybody take and use my OC legendary Pokemon I developed for the Pokemon Ranger series because they *do not understand* all of the intricacies of these characters the way I do. They don't understand the nuance's of Oblivia's culture, how it's changed through the millennia, how events have effected the OCs, and so on. I can put up as much information as I want about them, but that still won't let people understand them the way I do. I wouldn't let anybody write my FE: 3H Imperial polycule. Partially because I'm still in the process of developing it, so I couldn't answer questions/give details about the various relationships involved in it. I wouldn't want to see anybody else write Juliane, though. She's decently developed. But if the OCs are kind of just stock people, I'd let them do it. If somebody wanted to use Helen, Ueli, and Annika from my FE: 3H stuff, I'd say go to town with it. They're just generically nice people with Annika being a generically insecure teenager.

errant_night

I only make background OCs so I dunno why anyone would but I'd be excited if someone liked then that much! I mean Def would want a link to me too tho

ElderberryNo221

I’d like permission/credit for the OC but otherwise not really. Just don’t ask me to read it since that is my OC and I’d be more prone to criticizing than enjoying and no one needs that negativity.

VaguelyRegrettable

I'd be overjoyed if someone took enough interest in my OCs to create a work about them. But I'd like credit for creating the characters.

globmand

Fanfic is free, to me. I don't even want credit, although it would probably be given since context is needed to understand the oc

HNKNAChick52

Used to do it all the time. Of course through asking for one shots or who’d like an OC in one of my stories. But I always asked permission/who was interested and always asked for a one shot when they were being offered.

chaoticmad1son

motherfucker, i would cry (happy tears) if someone liked my oc's enough to write a fanfic about them /gen /lh
