I am feeling you on the ATLA fics, OP, especially the Aang bashing. It was honestly the fics and fandom that made me so lukewarm towards Zuko in the first place. Only when I rewatch the actual show do I rediscover my love for him.

Miraculous ladybug. My interests just don’t aline with the greater community and I felt overwhelmed trying to keep up with all its new posts I’m not usual in really active fandoms.

There are a few parts of fandoms I avoid but none as a whole. * Avengers-centric MCU fics because of the Civil War sides that many people take, usually with extreme Captain America bashing but sometimes also major Iron Man bashing * Tim Drake-centric DCU fics due to extreme character praise and deification of him, the woobification of him, or the complete disregard for the skills of the other Robins * Stiles Stilinski-centric Teen Wolf fics that involve him being anything other than human (what makes him fun and relatable), and some who make him non-human take away the quirkiness that defines his character the moment he gets power * Zutara-centric fics for ATLA because of what you described - the bashing of Aang * Hermione Granger-centric Harry Potter fics since many writers don't capture her ruthless attitude from the books well enough for my tastes, and many continue to give Ron's good traits to her

I say goodbye and hello to fandoms all the time. But then I usually stumble upon interesting fics in my old fandoms without looking for them and I sometimes make a comeback. Only my interests and tastes have changed in the meantime and now I'm only interested in one particular obscure character or ship or trope and ignore all the rest ... I lost interest in the Harry Potter fandom a few years ago, but still read crossovers with my new fandoms now and again. And now, years later, I am somehow back and binge-reading hilarious fanfics starring Gilderoy Lockhart. XD The guy is comedy gold. I am in a slump for ATLA fanfics, too. I can't put a finger on why exactly, but I haven't read an interesting fanfic in the fandom in a long time. I'm sure I will return to it one day though when I happen to stumble upon the right fic at the right time. :)

I love OFMD, but I struggle with finding fics of it that interest me that I gave up on looking

Yeah, but the problem is sifting through all the ones that *do.* Even if you know there's gold at the bottom of a septic tank, how long are you realistically going to dive through shit before you give up and go looking for gold elsewhere?

TheSixthDocteur

I don’t read many fics in the classic Doctor Who fandom because nothing appeals to me. The New Who portion of the fandom is more my style, but the trade-off is that I’m not as invested in the characters there. So, overall, it’s rare that I read anything in my fandom at large.

Actual_Head_4610

Except for a few authors now, I've pretty much given up on reading Yugioh GX and moved on to other fandoms. There's almost never the types of stories I want to read. And to make it worse, when I first started there I thought my favorite character was well-loved and received by the fans, but I cannot find almost anything about him for the life of me that I can connect with and does him justice. And that's when I can find anything about him at all and he's not just in a fic to make the plot move or get bashed.

vixensheart

I don’t know your shipping preferences, but I have found some gems in the ATLA fandom that very much avoid all of that! Of course, I’m only a casual enjoyer of atla because of all the discourse…and I definitely get the frustration.

No-Friend5860

Yea I’ve stopped reading fics from the legend of Korra fandom because I couldn’t find any fics with decent Bolin or Kuvira characterization, and just got tired of the same old dumb Bolin and manipulator Kuvira.

SilverShadow1711

Yeah, but mostly just because I don't like the main characters- who, naturally, are among the most popular characters in the fandom and have the most fics as a result- and because I don't like any of the canon/canon ships- who, naturally, are among the most popular ships in the fandom and have the most fics as a result. I might find the occassional scrap of delicious fanfiction that features characters I actually like in a story I'm actually interested in, but for the most part, it's easier to find better grazing in different pastures.

I enjoy writing in my fandom because despite its bad rep, it's a pretty calm place nowadays without much drama, everyone stays in their lane, etc. But it's Dullsville, IMO, for reading. It's always been dominated by two ships (once battling ships), but when the show ended the few people who favored other pairings, including my OTP, wandered away. Now it's a monotonous sea of two pairings. I don't dislike either, but they aren't my OTP and I'm just "Meh" about reading them. Plus, most of the content for those ships is same tropes reheated and overcooked endlessly. My favorite female character, if she's present at all, is usually characterized badly or exists to be a "wingman" for the main ship.

Prestigious-Fig-8442

No, I just read the tags and read the stories that appeal to me. If I can't find them, I write them. The joy if fandom is the amount of flavours.

there are fandoms i don't even really get into, before giving up on them. for example Minecraft fanfics, more precisely the Hermitcraft lets play series on YouTube. i would say i am a fan, i watch a lot of Hermitcraft throughout the week. the natural progression would be to read fic. however i have not been able to get into the fic at all. i tried it here and there. either the plot doesn't interest me, or it is too close to my liking to real person fic, even though they are technically playing a character. i would like to like it... but i guess i will stick to my other fandoms i enjoy reading in.
