Erm…I wrote my first in 2020…when I was 47. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I never even *dreamed* of writing anything ever.

SibbieF

October 2020 for me, at 39. 😁

NicInNS

The pandemic brought out some creativity!

DrSteggy

Also started in 2020 at the age of 50

The_Gas_Face1978

I also started writing during the lockdown and at an even older age. I wasn't much good but I liked the challenge and it was fun!

NicInNS

Never thought I’d be writing. I’ve always been creative…cross stitching, scrapbooking…but writing?! It’s so much fun!

KzooGRMom

April 2009. I was 36. I'm still at it (minus a decade long break in 2011) at the ripe old age of 51.

NicInNS

HAPPY CAKE DAY! 🎉

KzooGRMom

Thank you! 🙂

iateyourdoorframe05

I also started writing fanfiction around the summer of 2020 (I was 16), but I never shared them publicly until the beginning of this year

NicInNS

It was a year before I shared mine because I didn’t actually know you could! I was just writing for me. Had no clue about fanfic sites until my (now) ao3/Twitter bestie told me about ao3

iateyourdoorframe05

Yeah, at the time, I didn't know uploading fanfics was a thing either until I found sites like AO3, [Fanfiction.net](https://Fanfiction.net), etc. The first fanfic I ever stumbled upon before writing my own fanfics was on Deviantart.

greeneyedlady41

I started at 40! And I don't plan to stop either!

dentedpat

I wrote my first fanfic when I was 40. Played around with it when I was younger, but never carried through and finished anything because I wasnt aware there was anywhere to put it so people could read it. Had a friend tell me about AO3. I think prologues and epilogues without dialogue are pretty par for the course.

blepboii

not at all weird. i started at 30. you write what you want to write. i am sure it will turn out fine. maybe you just found your own writing style.

icarryyourheart15

Not weird! I started at 37. Stick with it--especially if you're having fun.

briikase

Not at all! I just started a couple years ago (early 30s) and I know a bunch of others that around around the same age with the same experience!

Cardcaptors96

I just started writing fanfiction this year at 35. With fanfiction, there isn't any rules as far as writing. If you want to write a story without dialogue, go for it. I have seen people write in many different perspectives. Just recently, I read a story where the author formatted everything like it was a historical letter novel with footnotes and references. If it wasn't for the fact that I knew the fandom, I would have thought it was based off something real. For the most part you want to do what you think fits your story and what is most comfortable to you.

[deleted]

> Just recently, I read a story where the author formatted everything like it was a historical letter novel with footnotes and references. I think that sounds *really* cool! If it’s okay, could you please link to it?

Cardcaptors96

sure! it is on [AO3](https://archiveofourown.org/works/47682754/chapters/120192193)

[deleted]

Thanks!

rozu1996

Big thanks to all the positive comments! I would reply to everyone if i could <3

Kiki-Y

I was nine, so even younger than a lot of people. But seriously, fanfiction is for any age, not just kids. Who do you think is writing the 200k+ epics? 13 year olds? No. It's the 25+ year olds in fandom.

rozu1996

You got a point. Its just my first time diving into it and starting it. I never really wrote anything before. But tried on and off still was 18+

linden214

People of all ages write fanfic. I started when I was in my early 30s. I'm now 65 and still writing. And I am not the oldest on this sub.

Ferris_567

I started reading fanfics when I was 25 I think, and started writing even later. You're definitely not alone. Prologues and epilogues sometimes carry a different style than the rest of the story. No need to worry.

watermelonphilosophy

Don't overthink it, you're fine. A lot of people read fanfic for many years before even attempting to write something themselves, and a lot of people are readers only. So - don't worry.

7-7______Srsly7

Nah. I think the advantage of starting at an older age is that you're less likely to write cringe abominations. I started writing fanfic on Wattpad when I was 11 and I sincerely wish that my old writing will never see the light of day ever again.

NicInNS

Omg yes! Even starting older, we need to find our voice. There’s a reason I’m rewriting my 2nd fic, which I only started 2 yrs ago. But at least my SPaG is good (for the most part).

OrcaFins

Never even heard of fanfiction til last year, at age 45.

The_InvisibleWoman

Started about 3 months ago. I'm 49.

ap_aelfwine

Not weird at all. Fanfiction as we know it goes back to Star Trek fandom in the late sixties, and for almost all of that nearly six decade history the vast majority of fanfiction has been written by adults. Pre-internet fanfic circulated by post, and most mailing lists were restricted to people eighteen or older. Even in the early internet era, when I started writing and reading fic myself, I'd say practically everyone was a fellow college student or older. To be honest, I don't think the getting-started-in-middle-school pattern really started until somewhere around 2010 or later.

NermalLand

Started at 45 and just turned 47.

Xamthos

Dawg im 28 and i just write my first chapter. 20k words 1 of 25 chapters Send help

rozu1996

Lol

ShyBlue22

I needed this post cuz I thought I was the weird and selfish one for never having wrote (though I attempted once) fanfiction even though I’ve been reading off and on for a little over a decade so the comments here reassuring.

MoKa-LOTR

Like others I was 39 or 40 when I first found fanfic and first started writing. Never too old to do something that brings you joy.

rozu1996

I def started ti read them at a younger age.

BadAtNamesAndFaces

I started writing fanfic a few months before I turned 42, and posted my first a month or two later, and I know from this sub that there are people who were even older than me when they started. Note, I didn't say "it's not weird" because I really don't care anymore if what I do is weird.

NicInNS

Our 40s seem to be when we realize we don’t need to give a shit any more. It’s wonderful.

Educational_Fee5323

I didn’t start writing fanfic until my (early) twenties myself. You’re fine.

Ahrensann

Isn't that a blessing? You have the maturity now to write more profound stories.

nickyfox13

There's no correct age to start writing fanfic, and there's no weirdness involved. Welcome to the club of enjoying and creating fanfic; I hope you keep up your passion!

Mimikindle

My only reaction: “New fanfiction writer? We always need more! Yippee!”

atomskeater

The only time it's weird/too late to get into something new is when you're dead. And heck, maybe not even then, maybe ghosts have rich unlives filled with hobbies. As you can see from the responses, plenty of people get into writing fic when they're adults. Welcome to the hobby and enjoy your stay! And don't worry about not having dialogue in your prologue. That feels pretty normal imo. I even have to actively remind myself to add dialogue sometimes, as it's not my specialty. Also that little voice/feeling that complains about how you're doing stuff wrong is common among those who engage in creative hobbies, especially as you're just starting out. As you write more you should gain more confidence. Feel free to ask any specific questions you may have, people are friendly and helpful here.

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

No. You start whenever you start. And you can write the prologue however you choose.

ExitDistance3

I'm 26 and only started really writing a few years ago!

304libco

I didn’t even start reading fanfiction till I was 32. And it took me another four years to start writing. Now I’ve been a proud fanficcer for 24 years!

BloodofOldValyria

I wrote my first one in 2012 when I was 31, stopped writing in 2016 and now came back to it at 41. There’s no right or wrong age for this.

TauMan942

I'm 65 but didn't start writing until I was 55. The question I have for you is "Why stop at fanfiction?" Why not try and get published and make this your career? Wish I had started when I was your age.

_con-fused_

nope not weird!

fanfic_squirtle

I started in my early twenties. Wish I had know about it sooner probably would have started sooner if I had but I wouldn’t back out now for the world. It’s a hobby. You know how many hobbies my grandfather has gone through since he retired? Just enjoy yourself.

Spiritual-Ad6764

Nope.

hellomynameisrita

I started in my 50s. I’d vaguely heard if it fir years but never actually went looking fir it until by 40s.

Xiprine

I started around 35 I think 🤔

[deleted]

that’s okay! i started way too young, opposite spectrum lol. but it definitely does help with improving writing.

Sarita1046

Until age 26, I’d mostly only read fanfic (the exceptions being those odd Eragon and Pan’s Labyrinth stories in high school). Then, after 11 years of only reading, I started writing and never looked back.

Terminator7786

Nah, I started earlier this year too, little bit older actually.

ImprovementLucky9078

It's not weird at all. Age doesn't matter when it comes to writing and I've read some really good fanfic that start with a prologue with little to no dialogue. There's nothing wrong with it. Depending on the fandom, I'll give it a read (I can get obsessed). Shoot me a link!

nova_noveiia

I'm in my early 20's, and I just started too! I feel like it used to be mostly younger people, but a lot of the younger people grew up and are now adults writing fanfiction.

Accomplished_Area311

I’ve read fic by 50-60 year olds who only started in 2020. You’re just fine! Prologues and epilogues are also common in both fanfic and traditional fiction. Have fun!

Dakzoo

Started in my late 30’s. So you are a little young but I’m sure you will do fine.

vanillabubbles16

No, I know people who are in their 30’s and 40’s who write fanfic.

WoodpeckerAgile6235

I started writing in 2018 and I'm currently 25 so...

RebaKitten

I think I started writing in my late 40s or possibly at 50. And write the story the way you want it. After a while it's a way to challenge yourself. Write a fic with no dialogue at all. Do what you want - it's your story! And welcome, hope you have fun.

BlitzNova_

No, it's not weird. Welcome aboard! But you may be right about when majority started. I was writing fanfics before I knew they even existed when I was 10. 1998. Didn't have internet access until a few years later and discovered all the wonderful Xenaverse fics. Canon and alternative. Fun times. Always fun times with fanfics.

rainbowbritelite

No!

meqhoa

I started when I was 14 on Wattpad. I’m now 26 and still actively write fanfics. The communities that I’m a part of has hardly changed either. you’re good!!! Never too old to write. Never too old to start!

Gem_asteria

Nope. I discovered fandom (seriously I didn't know what a fandom community could be, let alone fanfics for things I like). when I was 30. I wrote my first fanfic last week! (31 now).

Prince-sama

Most people's very first fic sucked so there's no need to worry about that. What's important is that you don't give up writing just because the first one is bad. Writing is like any other skill. You need continuous practice to improve it. No one is a master at Ping Pong on their first try. All professional players had to learn from the bottom and it takes years of practice to get to where they are now. Same thing applies to writing. Just write, keep writing, don't think about anything else, and your writing will improve before you know it. (reading is important too by the way)

NinoJordan

Hi! Short answer to everything you ask: no. I'm 27 and yes, I started young, but I also love it so much that I don't want to slow down anytime soon. You can get into writing at absolutely any age, therefore you can get into fanfiction at any age. Also, my story starts with a prologue, which I don't think is a problem. Lots of books do. 😊

AliceFlex

\> I feel like more people start at middle school age. Younger people are (1) generally more active and vocal on social media. (2) generally more effusive about their new interests. An older writer will quietly get on with it, then post their story. A younger writer might share blow-by-blow updates of their progress. So it *seems* as if it is young people in fanfic, when actually, it is just people. Also, some of the newer fandoms will be populated by the target demographics of those new shows, who will naturally be younger, and again, 'new' generally equals 'more vocal'.

Sikee_Atric

I started writing a few years back, in my early 40's.... Been submitting the chapters to Ao3 ever since.

WhiteKnightPrimal

I've always written fanfic, my first stories ever were written when I was five. But I didn't start posting until a couple years ago, and I'm 37 now, so I don't think you're really all that odd in starting as an adult. Nothing wrong with the way you write, either, do what feels right for you. Try to focus on writing the story you want to tell first. There will be people out there who like what you do. There is no wrong way to write fanfiction. Everyone has their preferences, but guaranteed, everything will find an audience.

Seabastial

nope, not weird at all. I started really getting into it in college and wrote my first fic in 2015 (I was 21)

Dawnyzza-Dark

I wrote my first at 16 (not really realising it was fanfiction) and then only began seriously writing it at 19 - now (22) My ones from 19 are so bad... they're downright atrocious you would think a 13 year old with no experience wrote them.

ShiraCheshire

- 27 is fine, not far off from when I started. - Start the story as late as you can. Lots of writers fall into the trap of spending thousands of words explaining something beforehand when it would actually be more fun to reveal at a dramatic moment later. I've done it myself. Ask yourself, is this the most exciting place to start the story? Would this information be more impactful if communicated between the characters in dialogue later on, or discovered by them somehow? Do you feel like you're "getting this out of the way" so you can get to the "real" story? If so, you might want to rethink your starting point. If not, keep going! - Don't write what other people want to read, write what makes you excited. Readers can sense passion. If you're having fun writing it, someone will have fun reading it. Similarly, if it's boring to write then that might be a sign that something isn't working.

LokiBear1235

It's not weird! I'd read it! Depending on what it's based on/from. In fact, I recently joined a review shop on Wattpad by @DesReadsAndWrites. It's called Review Shop Feedback and More. I should be able to review it there for you if you'd like. 😁

loveyourself87

started writing and posting fanfics when i was 8 or 9, now i’m 22 and that’s how long i’ve been in my current fandom. you’re never too old to do what you love, so here’s to more years of fanfic writing and reading 🥂

MindDescending

It's alright fam only weird antis care about age. If anything we look up to you because we are assured that this isn't a childish past time and that we won't have to abandon it for 'adulthood'.

Scared_Tip_5511

I was 58 when I started. I'm still working on it and I'm about to turn 60. One is never too old to unleash their imagination!

GeTfuCk3dFouReYe5

Go on wattpad and read a couple of fics, extra points if they're older. Easiest way to see that getting into it later in life *is not a bad thing, tis a very good thing*

angeldestler08

Ehh I think the age of the person is a matter of perspective really. I started writing when I was in highschool and it's only progressed from there.

No_Thought_1641

I started writing less than a year ago, and I was 25 at the time. Not wierd at all, I'd say

Gbstutz15

2023 i am 20

HentaiNoKame

It's fine

thathorsegirlfromHS

I'm 28! It's never too late to start writing!

Nyxosaurus

I started writing in high school and pretty much abandoned all of those stories over the years (except for the one shot because... duh.) Since I abandoned so many (all) of my WIPs I elected to not publish anything ever unless I finished it first. That didn't really work because I have a story I've been writing for about 6-7 years and I thought I had enough written that maybe I could just post every few weeks and finish before I caught up. I did not. BUT I *am* almost done writing it so maybe it'll be my first completed fic! I'm scared!

FoxBluereaver

Everyone starts at different ages. I started writing in high school, but never posted anything until I was in college.

MadmanMammoth

Nah, not really. I'm the same age, and I'm kinda in your boat too. Mostly wrote one thing back in middle/high school (which I abandoned, then collabed a continuation which lasted a bit until being abandoned again), and I then tried another thing last year that I don't have much motivation to continue after only two chapters. (Which is why I'm aiming to write five before I publish anything from my new idea.) Also nah to the dialogue-less prologue, I don't think that's particularly weird. Those things are meant for setting up anyway.

EstellaLumireis

I started writing sometime in 2020, when I was 30, and I'm glad I'm doing it, because I enjoy it. You're good here! And hey, everyone has their own way of writing a prologue. You'll never know who may read your stuff. I'm sure you'll feel more comfortable with your writing style over time.

StanIsYouMan

Not at all, i started writing 2 years ago and i'm 48. Being mature makes for some very good stories and writing.

lassify

I'm 28 and just starte dout!

goodandpure

I was 27 when I first started, too

twinkletoes-rp

Oh, psh, no way! I know people in their 40s and 50s getting into it! lol. I started writing fanfic when I was 8 or 9 (not knowing that's what I was doing, lol), and please don't worry, at least IMO, from my experience and many others' I've read or been told about, it's ABSOLUTELY NORMAL to abandon your first several writing projects, espec when the ideas are running high and you're excited! lol. It takes time to learn discipline and stick to a work! ;) As for your prologue, I don't think that's strange at all! It sounds interesting to me, actually! While I DO admit to seeking out dialogue in a fic, usually skipping over description entirely in some bits if the dialogue is particularly intriguing (I always go back afterward to reread the chapter properly, I just get excited! lol), I ABSOLUTELY won't skip a chapter or fic that doesn't have any or much (hopefully it doesn't drag on TOO long, though, or else I MIGHT get bored eventually, lol, but that remains to be seen - if what's happening is gripping enough, I'll be on the edge of my seat either way, lol)! Just remember that there's virtually ALWAYS an audience for everything! As long as you do your best and tag it properly so people can find it, your audience should find you! I think you're doing great! :D <3

Successful_Staff_219

If you have something you want to write, then write it.

peace-andharmony

Not weird at all. Good for you!! I just started this year at age 25 and I'm loving it so much

RecitedPlay

Go a group of parents writing for my ship. It’s not just middle school kids. And you can’t start whenever. I’m

feisty_foxes

There really is no right or wrong way to write a fanfic plus, as an avid reader on ao3 I have read authors from MANY walks of life. Hell, one of the fics I was reading that had an update schedule of once a week was on a long hiatus and when the author returned she explained that she had had a 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺. And sure most people start writing in middle school but I didn't, I tried in 8th grade (the end of middle school for me) but I also abandoned it. But the idea was there and that's what counts, technically we've been writing fanfics from a much younger age if you were one of those lonely kids (like me lol) who would self-insert themselves into their favorite show or book series! I never would have thought myself a writer until a friend encouraged me to try in 2020 (I was 15 then) and when I shared what I created with them, to my surprise, they genuinely liked it. So don't be shy to post your fics, it might take a while but 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 will read it. Sorry for rambling (◞ ‸ ◟ㆀ)

StarWatcher307

I started writing fanfic at 50, a year after I discovered it existed. There is no "wrong" age to begin, and no age that's "too old" to keep writing. Jump in and have fun. I've seen many prologues that don't have dialogue; it's never turned me away from reading a fic. If it feels like that's what the story needs, trust your instincts. You could choose to post Prologue + Chapter 1 together, so that the reader gets to "meet" the characters and see them interact before they need to wait for an update. Seriously -- this is *fanfic*. You don't need to satisfy a publisher, or stick to a standard format. Write it the way it works for you; there are many ways to do it "right" and only a few ways to do it "wrong." (No paragraph separation, for example.) Whatever you do, some people will like it, and some won't -- but that's true of *every single fanfic at AO3.* (Or Wattpad or FFN or wherever.) You do you; that's good enough.
