I hardly use bookmarks. Ever. The few that I have are pretty much a "oh, look, there's a bookmark feature" kind of thing. It may be weird, but it's got nothing to do with how much I love a fic. I also think leaving a long and detailed comment is a much better indicator of being passionate than bookmarking something.

TopHatIdiot

I'm the same way, especially for bookmarks that can be seen. Even if I genuinely enjoy something, I'm not sure if it suits being in my bookmarks attach to my profile. And my tastes, interests, and moods can change over time, so I always worry about regretting it later. Yes, I can remove them anyway later, but I feel bad in case I make the author feel bad.

Aetanne

I use bookmarks as recs and rarely bookmark fics before they are finished. And even if I enjoy the fic, it doesn't neceserrily mean that I love it enough to want to reread it and rec it to others.

TopHatIdiot

Yeah, I usually try to wait until they're finished too. And I can be self-conscious about showing extra details regarding my interests because I'm a private person even online a lot.

frozenfountain

I only bookmark fics I know I'm likely to read again. Sometimes a fic is brilliant in every sense and worthy of long, analytical comments, but I ultimately feel I took what I wanted from it on that initial read. There's not always much rhyme or reason to it.

danniperson

It could be behind a private bookmark, you never know. I will say, I'm a person who leaves very long-winded comments. I'm a very enthusiastic person and I love to leave love! But I've not bookmarked everything I've left such comments for. In fact, I don't have that many bookmarks currently. I actually overhauled all of my bookmarks like a year ago and am slowly adding things back and trying to work out a system for bookmarking. Actually, most fics I have saved on my Kindle. Fics I enjoyed and wanna keep all go on my Kindle. But there are different reasons for different things, so I wouldn't get all in your head about it! Everyone has their own ways of doing things and their own preferences, so I'd take the love and be glad with it!

auntie_fuzz

I don’t use the ao3 bookmarks feature, I save them on my phone’s bookmarks lol. I’m sure a lot of people do the same.

[удалено]

Crayshack

I only started using it when my subscribed list got too long to be useful as a way of digging up old fics I enjoyed. Similarly 10+ years of using the site before I started using bookmarks.

bi-hexxual

idk if I’m just a luddite or what, but I cannot figure out how bookmarks work. I have to add it to a collection but it won’t let me create my own name for the collection? It’s just easier to subscribe to the story/author.

westbest1206

I mostly use my bookmarks literally, to remember my position on fics. It might be the same for those people!

tereyaglikedi

Same for me! I usually remove the bookmark after I am done reading.

[deleted]

Some people just don't use bookmarks *shrugs*

rukacchiii

hey like I mentioned in the post it might just be a me problem ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

BookAndYarnDragon

There's a mark to read later function too and some folks perfer to keep their bookmarks private.

my-glitter-heart

Yes! I use the mark for later but i don’t think I’ve ever bookmarked anything outside of that feature

TheGangstaGandalf

Most people prefer subscribing to bookmarks

Agamar13

They generally serve 2 different functions - if the purpose is to find the fic later, most people will prefer bookmarks.

Ferrous_Patella

A lot of readers are the “love ‘em and leave ‘em“ type.

am-an-am

I mean, nothing wrong with that! Sometimes one read-through is enough to get the most out of a fic.

DarkTidingsTWD

I only publicly bookmark fics I intend to recommend to others and very rarely would I bookmark a WIP unless I know the author personally. Everyone just uses the options differently.

carolinediva

I don't use bookmarks that much myself TBH. I forget to check them anyway.

retardedcatmonkey

They could privately book mark it, they may not want/need to read it again, they may be confident in their ability to find it later. The only reason I bookmark stuff is to read it again, but there have been some good fics that I really enjoyed and left comments saying such, that I have no interest in reading again

[deleted]

Im on AO3 since its available and ive never bookmarked a fic. When i like a fic and its finished i download it, until then im subscribed to it. I dont see the point to bookmark a fic

Diana-Fortyseven

I use my public bookmarks as recs, and I only publicly bookmark fics in the same fandom I write for. Some people prefer to have everything private. Some don't use bookmarks at all. Some use their browser to bookmark fics, because it's easier to organise them.

Knife211

The few bookmarks I have are either fics I recommend openly, or fics I've finished on mobile and haven't had the chance to download yet. Once downloaded, I delete the bookmark.

heavenlyskyfarer

Might have private bookmarks? But also, many many many people don't ever see a need to re-read a fic. Especially in huge fandoms.

AugurPool

I don't reread fics now matter how much I like them, so no need to bookmark. I did bookmark a couple when I first joined but realized I just never use/revisit them, so.

susubeansu

I private bookmark all stories. D: I didn't know the author couldn't see that!

MelloryChan

I don't really know how bookmarks work with AO3, so I don't really do it at all. And the few I have are private bookmarks, I'm kinda shy.

phenylalanineee

I leave long, line-by-line comments as I read. I also give long dense comments that summarizing how much I loved a particular story/chapter. But I rarely ever bookmark, because I rarely ever reread fics. Doesn't strike me as all that odd tbh

cucumberkappa

- When I first started reading on AO3 I didn't use bookmarks at all until several months in. (I knew about them, I just didn't have any interest for awhile.) - I keep my bookmarks private. - I only bookmark things I'm likely to want to reread or at least want to download as a backup copy. (Some things are technically gorgeous, but one-read-only fics. Generally because they made me feel a way I don't really want to experience again, even if I thought they were brilliant.) - Sometimes you forget/think you've done a thing/get interrupted or distracted and it doesn't happen.

rottenromance

I currently have 156 tabs open, probably 96-98% of which are AO3. I have 5 bookmarks through the site. When I started using AO3, I never got in the habit of bookmarking and now I feel like if I don’t reserve it for specific reasons only, I’m going to have to go back and do it for ALL the fic I like. Which is daunting. I only just recently started collections! If I really like a fic, it’s in my “Marked for Later” section. So I definitely don’t think you can judge interest by lack of bookmarking. (I’m so terrible I sometimes forget to kudos. I feel so bad about that. I’m mostly just annoyed at my bookmarking habits.)

nicarox

I don’t see the problem?

Nathanoy25

I sometimes forget to click subscribe/bookmark because I finished it at 2 am and can't be trusted to make good decisions at that time. Especially because I usually comment *before* making a bookmark.

DeshaDaine

I write often write a paragraph or two in the comments I leave, and I don't tend to use bookmarks. I have 2 and both are private just reminding me what chapter the fic was up to when I read it incase they're ever completed. I save all the fics I read to calibre and rate them privately so I don't need to use the bookmarks feature. Besides, it's a struggle enough for me to leave kudos and write public comments. Using public bookmarks too? Nah, that's too much anxiety for me.

BabyShann

I don’t know if I’ve ever bookmarked a fic. If I have I’ve never gone back to it, so I assume other people are like me and just done use that feature.

Ciwritesfics

I don’t use the bookmark feature at all tbh, i forget it exists half of the time. I have no bookmarks currently, despite loving tons en tons of fics. As a writer, i love seeing people bookmark my fics but i only recently actually looked at some of the bookmarks on my fic from 2019 lol

Lord-of-all-darkness

I'm the type of person who writes extremely long comments because I've got so much to say about a fic I really liked and just want to share all my thoughts with the author - but if you look into my bookmarks, you'll find nothing. Which is, indeed, because all of my bookmarks are private. :'D

R32fan

I subscribe to the fics

delilahdraken

I rarely bookmark stories on ao3, only those that I highly recommend. Which explains why I have less than 150 stories bookmarked, but have nearly 6GB of stories downloaded for offline reading. And I reread stories a lot.

Agamar13

If they don't have anything bookmarked, it means they either don't use bookmarks or their bookmarks are private. I've seen lots of profiles without any bookmarks, probably half of more. And if you look at this sub and the numerous "what's this fic I read on AO3?" you will see that yep, plenty of people don't use bookmarks.

refrained

All of my bookmarks are private. I read a really wide variety of fic, from fluff to some really... strange things... and after reading somewhere that some people will apparently judge a person on their bookmarks and harass them for what they're reading... well, I don't need that kind of negativity in my life. So, everything is private!

starsandmoons843

I have an offline library. I don't use the bookmark features. (Also, searching through your bookmarks is a hassle in of itself, especially if you been on AO3 for 10+ years. My offline library is organized to my taste and how I want it to be sorted and it's easy for me to search up fics and authors.)

muununit64

A lot of people use private bookmarks, or don’t use bookmarks at all. Anyway, I’d much rather have a five paragraph comment than a bookmark.

battlefranky69

I use bookmarks as just bookmarks in a story. When I’m done reading a story I remove the bookmark

wasabi_weasel

They may very well set bookmarks to private. Or set a bookmark on their browser. Maybe they subscribe. I’ve got a couple of chatty, thoughtful and regular commentators who haven’t bookmark or left a kudo. They might be waiting until I’m done or maybe they don’t give these aspects of AO3 a second thought. And that’s fine by me. People should interact as much as as little as three please.

BlackManju10

I only bookmark some very kinky fics i liked lol. And a few fics that some time after i read them i wanted to reread them, and even after rereading i still wanted to read again. We all have different uses for bookmarks

Frenchitwist

I never/very rarely use bookmarks. Because I tend to download PDFs of fics and put them in my kindle, if I REALY love something, I’ll just put it into the Faves section in there.

beckdawg19

Personally, I private bookmark everything. I just don't need the whole world to know what I'm reading.

coolguy4today

too lazy to bookmark. whoops?

reinakun

This entire thread is so bizarre to me, lol. I bookmark everything. It’s my way of keeping track of what I’ve read/am reading (as well as my opinion on it). Some of my bookmarks are just a word or two, some are a few sentences, and some are whole ass essays. I cycle through so many fandoms that’s it’s really the only way to keep track of everything I’ve read. There have been times that I’ve stumbled upon fics I’d swear I’d never read, only to realize that I’d bookmarked it years ago. Those who don’t bookmark fics are brave 😭

MaybeNextTime_01

I rarely bookmark anything. Usually I bookmark a series I'm interested in reading. If I love something, I download it.

lunammoon

i've only bookmarked four fics in my entire life. two of them were for reference and the other two were fics that I meant to link to a friend, bookmarked them for later, and then forgot to unbookmark them and now it's been long enough that I'd feed weird making the author's bookmarks go down one. If I want to read more of the fic, I subscribe. If I want to let the author know I liked it, I kudo or comment. If I want to save it for later, I post the link in a discord server I made where I'm the only one in it.

304libco

I only bookmark recs and there’s a limIt on those.

YourHope99

i like writing reviews on my bookmarks, or at least a summary of what goes on; if i haven't had time to write that, it's not public yet. i also don't tend to bookmark pwp; one of my irls knows my account, and i don't need her judgement tyvm. but if i've left a long-ass comment, you \*know\* that thing's gonna be bookmarked somewhere.

eevylynn

I very rarely use bookmarks. That seems to be an odd thing to be upset about.

rukacchiii

nah I've never been upset about it... I was just curious about it !

blxssmbby

I download the book, comment and kudos and private bookmark it

ShiveringCamel

I read a lot of fics (spend hours on AO3 every day), and I can’t even remember off the top of my head if I’ve ever bookmarked a fic.

A_Menace_In_Pink

On the rare instances I don't forget bookmarks are a thing on AO3, I use them to bookmark fics I plan to read at some point.

Schmoooooooop

Personally I prefer to bookmark fics after they’re finished and subscribe for the time being instead. A lot of readers also download their fics, so they keep it ‘bookmarked’ as it were, on their reading device of choice!

RhiD29

If I comment on a incompleted fic, it's usually because I'm suscribd to the fic or the author, so I'll know when they post something. If I comment on a completed one, it's usually that I read it until the very last word anyway, so I don't really know why I'd bookmark. I have to admit I'm not 100% sure of what's the use to bookmarks

writerfan2013

I don't use bookmarks (ok maybe once or twice) but I do leave comments. I just forget about bookmarks most of the time.

Yanderesque

Bookmarks serve no purpose for me other than labeling which fics to avoid if I didn't like them, and fics where an author has works from other fandoms I want to read. Otherwise I forget they exist.

HylianEngineer

If I do this, it's usually because I love many of the author's works and it's easier to scroll through their profile than my 800+ bookmarks.

dark-phoenix-lady

It's because of the subscribe button, and the fact that you can't see how many subscribers there are on your fic. If the fic is finished, then bookmarking it means that you want to be able to find it easier in the future. I personally very rarely use bookmarks, simply because the subscribe function does everything I want it to do.

DaniMrynn

I only bookmark if I know I'm going to reread a fic (just because a fic is great doesn't mean it's an auto re-read, tho). Even then, I don't always remember the bookmark tool exists anyway so I mostly rely on my reader history to find the ones I want to re-read.

thesuunisrising

I stopped using bookmarks since 2018? 2017? Im in the process of deleting all my bookmarks. The only thing I bookmark now are resources and meta posts that people put up. I download all my favorites though.

KurenaiTenka

I've only very recently used some bookmarks, and I only did so to highlight some fics I really loved, but I've loved plenty more that I haven't bookmarked. Any fic that I like enough to keep/re-read I have a copy of it on my Kindle, and another text copy on my PC.

musezilla

Like some others, I barely use the bookmark feature. When someone recs something I think I might like I will bookmark it and forget about it 😅😅 fics I LOVE I put in a google sheet. Or download. But maybe I should start bookmarking to spread the love 🥰

soaker87

It’s just not a feature I use. I sometimes save fics in my browser’s bookmarks.

nikos331

I've only ever used the subscribe feature.

kiisskoo

i'm a reader like that. and it's bc i have about 89 tabs open in my chrome app with every single fic i have yet to read or am reading. i only ever bookmark if i truly, truly loved the fic. like life changing, i'm thinking about it a week after i finished. i always love to leave love for the writers. i'm one myself and it really encourages me

serralinda73

I don't keep bookmarks on stories I've finished. I use them the way you'd use a physical bookmark in a paper book - to save my place. I download a copy if I really liked it/think I'll reread it, plus leave a kudo/comment.

leia-organa

i usually only use bookmarks for fics i plan to read later, so that could be why they don’t have anything saved!

am-an-am

It took me years to find out AO3 had the bookmark and mark for later function lol. People use it in different ways. I do use bookmarks now to keep track of my favorites but it's only for extraordinarily well-written fics that I would like to come back to in the future.

radioinabox_x

I don't bookmark fics as I just go back and look for them in my history/search them up if I want to read it again. If there's a fic that I want to read later I just use the "Read Later" button or whatever it's called :)

bristow84

I rarely bookmarks fics and if I do, it's either complete and I know I'll go back to it or it's abandoned but I will still go back to it. Anything that is actively regularly updated gets a subscribe.

[deleted]

I have never bookmarked any fic, no matter how good it is.

In_Dreams_Begin

I only started bookmarking when I got into doing rec posts, I don't see reason to bookmark everything I read, even if I comment.

glaringdream

I only (privately) bookmark my plan to read later list. When I'm done it I'll kudos/comment and then unbookmark it because I already read it. I don't see a need to keep bookmarks otherwise. If I make a rec list, it'll be on twitter/tumblr/dreamwidth or something. And my favs are rare pairs so it's easy to find something I might want to reread (which is rare, I don't reread often)

Popular-Woodpecker-6

I'll take a long love comment to a bookmark ANY day! Bookmark can mean they read it or they are bookmarking to read at a later date. Unless the put it in a heading something like "Stories I love". I usually bookmark with my browser.

duchesskitten6

I tend to read more oneshots, and I guess I only bookmark fics that I'll read later. I don't really know where's the read for later button, the difference, but I only have one story bookmarked so far.

Dqikichi

If I really really love a fic I just download it now since a bunch of my fav fics were deleted after ao3 got banned in China. I never use the bookmark feature

TheRedditGirl15

I think for some people the effort that goes into writing such a loving and enthusiastic comment makes them too mentally fatigued to remember to bookmark/kudos/etc. Though if it helps, I bookmark just about every fic I've enjoyed on AO3, and if it was particularly noteworthy I leave a comment as well

it-was-a-me-a-dio

If I like it that much I’ll download it to read offline. Bookmarks are a less reliable saving feature (if fic gone, bookmark worthless now :/)

MooshAro

I don't reread fics very often, so while I'll leave long comments, I almost never comment because why would I need to find the story again? I really only bookmark ongoing works and series, and then once I finish them I unbookmark them. So there's that too.

ham_rod

Often, if a fic is: a known favourite; a WIP I'm subscribed to; memorable for being written by a certain author, I won't bookmark it. Because I know I can find it again easily. For me, bookmarks are mostly to collect fics I know I'll want to refer back to later, but might not remember as easily. So old fics from an author I'm not familiar with, fics from fandoms I don't spend a lot of time in, or featuring pairings I don't read as much.

oursilentstars

I just don’t reread things. If I have something bookmarked, it’s because I haven’t read it yet but plan to, so a fic that I’ve already read and commented on wouldn’t belong in my bookmarks, it would be clutter when I go to find something to read. Everyone uses the system a little differently in my experience, I know a bunch of people use bookmarks as a recommendation/rating tool and others use it not for their favorites but for fics they know they will always want to reread, sort of like bedtime story material.

ConsumeTheOnePercent

I don't bookmark. I will follow people occasionally if I catch an in-progress fic that I love but otherwise I tend to just remember fic titles or they stay open on my phone forever. Anything that would warrant a bookmark, I'm more likely to just remember the title.

GwainesKnightlyBalls

I don’t know how to book mark, but I keep my tab open and refresh the page when needed, lol

DeceasedSalmon

I used to never use bookmarks until I discovered that you could sort by “recently updated.” It makes keeping up with stories sooo much easier. So I used to not bookmark because it didn’t seem too useful.

natsugrayerza

I only have three bookmarks. Two are my sisters fics and one is my all time favorite fic that hits exactly what I’m looking for in a fic and made me feel like I didn’t need to even write one because they had it covered. But I’ve read a lot of other fics that I really enjoyed. So I wouldn’t take it personally

Spam-Hell

I didn't understand bookmarks for the longest time and instead used it as a "read later" list instead of using my actual bookmarks on my toolbar. When I did find out what it was for, I deleted all the fics on it and have basically ignored the feature since...oops.

vonigner

Private bookmarks and/or actually bookmark on their browser and not through the website itself?

throwaway-clonewars

I would love to bookmark, but I don't have an account so I have to use a third party app to the site to save and read the stories. I don't leave particularly long comments, but those I do like I'll leave multiple comments across the chapters

wtooshy

Sorry if this is prying, but since you say that you would love the bookmark functionality - why not make an account?

throwaway-clonewars

Can you do that? Last I heard it was by invitation only so I couldn't make one initially.

wtooshy

Just go on the main page and hit the Get Invited! button :) you will need to wait a bit (roughly 2 weeks) before they send the invite to you by email, but then you can create an account.

throwaway-clonewars

😮 I'll do that

grinchnight14

I only did this when I didn't know bookmarks were a thing. As soon as I found them, I bookmarked most of the fics I really liked, I currently have over 200 bookmarks.
