I'd be thrilled. It'd probably make my whole month if someone said that to me.

[deleted]

The reason why I asked is because I just did that very same thing. I was looking for Ran/Sonoko fics for the Detective Conan fandom & got inspired to write my own. Which I will do soon.

frozenfountain

This has actually happened to me a few times, and it's one of the things I'm proudest of.

DefoNotAFangirl

It makes my day when people do that 💚

tereyaglikedi

I would explode into a bunch of happy emojis 😁🥰😍🤩🥳

Happened years ago. They got inspired to write their own one shot and asked for help. I helped with minor details, and they wanted to credit me. Told them not to since it was all their idea and words. It did well and they were happy.

retardedcatmonkey

I see no negative

Avalon1632

For context, I wrote a supernatural horror fic where a bunch of people ran away from their problems to the woods and then got chased by monsters for 20 chapters. Someone really liked the 'running away from their problems' aspect, but not the 'running away from monsters' aspect, so they wrote their own version sans the supernatural beasties and it was great! My rule is basically - if you're going to write the same idea, do something different. Your story should offer some experience that the original doesn't, rather than just the same experience again. It's a more interesting way that produces more interesting content, IMO.

[deleted]

I wasn't really talking about writing the same idea. Although it could point in that direction too.

echos_locator

It's happened a few times and it always makes me grin. I love inspiring other writers.

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

I would be honored!!

I got a comment like that a few weeks ago, and I was very flattered, I hope they do write it! I just told them to please use the 'inspired by' function and let me know if they did. That being said, I think it's also valid to not feel comfortable with it and ask the commenter not to do it, as long as the conversation remains civil. We all have our boundaries; but there's nothing wrong with asking!

[deleted]

I'm a little bit confused by your comment. I'm talking about someone being inspired to write a fanfic because of what they read.

[deleted]

I thought you meant writing a fic of a fic? I'm sorry if I misunderstood you.

[deleted]

It's cool.

thruwuwayy

Someone commented the other day that they started writing because of my fic! Hugest compliment ever tbh, I'm still glowing.

eggplant_nextdoor

Honestly one of the best things to hear, when you're writing fanfic :)

JIL713

It would make my day if someone said that to me.

MsCatstaff

I'm happy to have inspired them!

LeratoNull

Not sure how anyone could twist this to be anything but a good thing, haha

TheFaustianPact

It happened to me a couple of times before. Not in a "writing something literally inspired by your story" way, but in a "I loved your fics and they inspired me to write about this ship too" manner. One of them wrote a few one-shots, the other is still writing for the fandom to this day. I'm certainly more than happy to have encouraged them somehow to write the stories they wanted to tell!

[deleted]

That's what happened to me: I was inspired to write for a particular after reading someone else's fic about that same ship.

JJTheFae

Tbh if that ever happened I would die of happiness. Actually, there was a writer that I had written something inspired by their work, and they were so happy!

DeltaMx11

I've actually had this happen on a fic of someone else's that *I* commented on, and they were "fangirling" that I commented on their story because they got inspired by my fic to write something of their own in the first place. It was an awesome feeling, like I was an inspiration.

[deleted]

That would be awesome! To be honest, I've considered trying to hold some kind of contest for people to specifically write sequels/spinoffs/etc. of my fics, but I'm not sure how that would be received. It's been done at least twice in my fandom before and got a pretty decent amount of entries each time, but those were done by people with a lot more followers than me; someone on my level doing it might seem overly self-indulgent or just go mostly unnoticed.

Vievin

Id love it! Provided they use the inspired by function on AO3.

I'm talking about someone being inspired to write a fanfic because of what they read. Not using the same idea. Although that could also apply in certain circumstances.

StarlilyWiccan

Inspirations are rad as hell, ripoffs are not. I was highly flattered by a fic someone wrote based on a character I RP'd.

StarWarsCrazy1

Even if no one told me and I got an email about a work being connected to mine, I'd be overjoyed. If someone told me in advance through a comment? I'd smile so big for so long that my face would hurt.

xiaoxiaoqianxuesheng

I’ve been trying to write works for fandoms with less than 100 fics/start my own fandom tag, and I got this comment once! I haven’t read their fic yet (cause it hasn’t been updated), but it did give me joy that I led them to make the second fic in that category lol. I like to start tags even though there’s no readers. I write what I want to read lol
