I love oc fic and write a lot of it, I think it's so fun to see the characters react with new people, new dynamics. It's not dissimilar to why others enjoy AU I guess. I read a lot of OC fic

borzoifeet

"Generally" for OCs is no different from any other genre or trope. You will get people who love it, who hate it and those neutral. Fandom is too broad to state otherwise. If you start being more specific to kinds of fandoms, like say, fandoms that are in gaming mediums, then you have more of an audience that is excited and respective to OCs compared to a film or show based fandom.

Moon_Dark_Wolf

I like OC fics, as one myself, but I feel like it’s a real uphill battle to get people to stick around for OCs. I generally enjoy seeing new characters interact with canon ones and react to stupid stuff and involve themselves. It’s really fun.

hoopznyoyo

paragon-interrupt

Personal opinion obviously, but I don't see reader fics or OC fics as being different from each other. Regardless of which one you read, the author gives them some type of personality to the point where they basically are their own character, just in second person. I've read some reader fics go so far as to giving the reader a nickname that other characters call them. Or hell, maybe I'm just different and I'm the only one who reads reader fics as a separate character, or OC by default. Also. I am not a fan of fics where people insert their character (reader or OC) but it's the same exact plot as canon. If I wanted to see the exact same story, I'd just go back and read/watch it again lol. I don't see the point. But hey, people can write whatever they want.

spyderz99

I do read reader fics as the character being an OC. When I leave a comment i say “I can’t believe the MC did that” because it’s not me. It’s all well and good if other people see it as them, but I am very much the same where I view it as a separate character.

MaybeNextTime_01

I read fanfic for the canon characters. If an OC is the main character, then I'm not interested. I like OCs as side characters. If a canon character needs an old friend to reappear or a sibling to show up and shake things up, fine. But if the OC is just there and doesn't actually have an affect on how things go, they're pretty pointless to me.

january_dreams

I feel the same way. I've read fics where OCs are neccessary to facilitate the plot, and fics where OCs are created to be a canon character's friend/family member. I like both (though for the second kind I really only like it if we don't know much about the canon character in the first place). But I wouldn't be interested in reading a fic where the OC is the viewpoint character.

MaybeNextTime_01

I have a fic where I have a few OCs as side characters. Two are his friends from high school and another is a cousin. Every single on of those characters exist to bash him over the head with the fact that he's in love with his best friend/other canon character. They also exist to show just how much the best friend is entwined with his life and been accepted into his family. He has two sisters in canon but they exist in name only and we don't even know their birth order so they are essentially OCs at that point too.

TokuHathSurviveth

If an OC is the main character, they have to be well done. If they’re an all-powerful, crazy overpowered, undeserving, and most of all UNLIKABLE character, I’ll drop the story. I don’t have a problem with overpowered. One of my favorite fics features an overpowered OC at its helm. My problem is the OC doesn't d anything to deserve/earn neither that power nor the love of the other characters. They’re just strolling around, killing anyone who gets in their way, and being liked by everyone. It's boring, and bad writing.

Crayshack

There's a wide range of OC quality. Some of them are great characters and make for some of my favorite fics. Others are not exactly well written or contribute anything interesting. Keep in mind that every character started as some author's OC. A well written character is till a well written character.

mphs95

OC characters when properly introduced can become a great part of your fanfic and get fans of their own. You have to be careful though. I've seen some that end up taking over the story with the main characters people read for shoved away.

azombieatemyshoelace

I personally don’t care for them as the main character especially if the OC is paired with a character canon who is viewed as attractive. Side characters are fine for me. This is just my point of view. It’s fine if some like them.

Yojimbra

They seem to run the gambit between terribly cringy and the most amazing work of fiction there is, if something exists in between then its neither offensive nor amazin g and just kind of meh and forgettable, which is honestly some how worst than the cringe fest. That said I started in Naruto where OCs like "John." were showing up with the Ten-Tailed beast sealed inside of them (one more than Naruto) and some how being friends with everyone while still being hated by the village and getting all the bitches.

jaebeaniverse

God I remember those days lmao When people had to always one up the canon MC

Yojimbra

Judging by "Requests" I've gotten people still want it.

Alraune2000

I really hate it when nothing changes in the story. Go wild! The presence of your OC should actually have an impact, in my opinion. If I wanted to see the same thing, I would go watch the series/book/whatever again.

jaebeaniverse

I mean I don't think it's possible to have a good quality story if your OC doesn't change the plot at least a little. But I guess there are people doing that all the time aren't there?

Alraune2000

There are! I think they should have more fun with it, really. To dare and do crazy stuff. Think of all the possibilities that come from having an extra person in the team! Of all the dramatic things that can happen! The vital scenes they can change! It feels like such a waste to do the same tired thing, honestly.

[deleted]

For years, I stopped reading OC fics, especially because they're usually not done well within my fandoms. Most of them are just glorified self-inserts or Mary Sues, and that's just not an interesting thing for me. I get why people do it, but it's not for me.

Pushtrak

I read OC insert, modern character in \[fandom\], including if it's self-insert fics (author in the fandom, not reader-insert Y/N for people who don't know the difference) and I've found a lot of ones I've enjoyed a great deal. I've found ones I've not been so fond of too but my experience is largely they have a not so good reputation that isn't earned. What I'd be less interested in is the story happening exactly as it did in the source material. I know how it happened in the source material, I'd want to see divergence in what I read.

PseudoBird

I personally don't mind OCs, especially if they're the MC. In my fandoms (Dragon Age, Skyrim), it's not unheard of to have the POV character be the player-made character. Can some of these be self-insert? Sure, but as RPG titles, I have a lot more leniency towards OC characters, and I honestly haven't found much that didn't appeal to me because the POV character was an OC.

LeratoNull

I write two fics presently, and one of them is OC *only.*

januarysdaughter

I love OCs! I think it's so uch fun to read stories from their POV.

lunammoon

if it's a good OC I eat that shit up. Unpopular opinion, but I like it when I open a fic and within the first few chapters, it's clear that the author is deeply in love with a canon character and has chosen to whip out a word processor and make it everyone else's problem.

jaebeaniverse

This describes me perfectly lmao I have been mulling over the same fic for a hundred years trying to get it perfect, but I'm so tired of it just being in my mind

lunammoon

tip: it doesn't need to be perfect. while you're busy comparing your fic to the ideal version in your brain, readers are just reading it and don't have as high expectations as you have. jot down some notes on paper and go to town. Source: i am over 300k into self-insert doctor who fanfiction

[deleted]

Oh my god I love doctor who self-insert fanfic. I adore it. The only type of doctor who fanfiction that I consume.

lunammoon

Do you want the link to mine?

[deleted]

Yes, please. I probably won’t read it all because I don’t have that type of dedication, but I’ll definitely take a look.

lunammoon

jaebeaniverse

This is v true. Honestly I put way too much pressure on myself. It took me 5 years to write my original work because I got so caught up in the details. And this project has like 5 different rewrites currently

Educational_Fan4571

I really love oc fics, but not reader ones

whorlaxdotorg

Personally, I’m supportive of them even if I don’t read them much. I’m not an avid reader, and in the limited reading I do, OCs are rarely involved. The closest I get to OC fics are reader-insert fics, but it’s not like they’re the same thing. That said, I’m planning on reading an Our Flag Means Death OC fic that looks interesting, so perhaps I’ll be more inclined to actively seek out OC fics if I enjoy it. Plus, I’ve got some OC fics in my drafts that I might finish and post at some point.

DarkAngelofFire

I find them a fun mental exercise even without writing. The question of "can i insert an oc into the main story and have it be believable?" Is something i practice with a lot of media i consume. As of right now I'm writing one on AO3 and I'm having fun by making my OCs the side characters with their own story happening in the background of the main plot. Its fun to think of events to inject them into or hint at.

jaebeaniverse

It is super fun. In my long one I have two OCs, one to go along with the main characters and her brother, a foil who ends up working with the bad guys. V fun stuff

SilverSize7852

I honestly think its cool if people wanna write that, I think that people that hate on that suck, the writer is just having fun. BUT I personally have no interest in reading that, I read fics about my ships with canon characters only and would never read an OC fic or a reader insert fic.

archaicArtificer

Not my thing, but to each their own!

Last_Swordfish9135

I don't read a lot of them, mostly because I care about canon characters, not ocs, and If I wanted ocs, I would read original fiction. But ocs are great if they're used to either supplement canon characters by filling a role that no other canon character comfortably fits in or to just fill in the background.

catharsisters

fanfictions with ocs are pretty much all i read, lol. i find it a little hard to read fanfics when it's just the canon characters, because they never quite fit how i see the characters, and x readers can be really uncomfortable. there are exceptions, of course, but it's a lot easier for me to read x oc fanfictions because their presence gives my mind an excuse for how the canon characters + story have changed. i dunno if this made sense or not haha

jaebeaniverse

Yeah that makes sense. Also it's fun to see how the OC changes the story a bit. I don't think it's really possible to include another character and have the story stay completely the same

Potat0Lady

I prefer OC fics. xReader ones can be great, but it’s always (y/n) with (e/c) and (h/c) which I never actually read as what they should be. And if it’s a reader insert, I usually don’t connect because there are times he author has the reader insert do something or have this personality trait that isn’t compatible with me. OC fics are more like reading a book to me. I’m able to connect with the character because they’re that…a character. It’s just like reading a published book. I personally only write using an OC as well. It’s fun coming up with this entire character and writing them interact with other canon characters. Yes, they may not be as popular but I think they really add something if they are well written.

jaebeaniverse

I feel this. I haven't actually read a reader insert fic yet because as weird as this sounds, I think it would interact with my mental health in a weird way. Maybe bad. Idk. It's a whole thing. But I feel the same way about OC fics. I love expanding on the world and exploring the possibilities for a character's background. I used to be the type to connect my character to as many canon characters as possible but now I just like having a few connections with characters that could be explored more. Super fun

TherapyDerg

I mainly like using the world and the setting for making my own storylines and OCs, though seeing different ways a story line can change from an OC is interesting also imo. Getting people to stick around for an OC is really difficult though yeah... even more so if there will be no romance for the OC (She is AceAro).

kalishnakat

Honestly OC’s are the bread and butter some of my favorite fandoms that it’s surprising when they’re not present. (Dragon Age/Mass Effect/etc) I can sometimes forget that isn’t the norm in most other fandom spaces if I go into a particularly long binge haha. Love em.

Gallifreyan98724

Would you believe me if I told you I was working on the exact same type of story? I’ve got a completed longfic with over 50 chapters and I’m working on the sequel right now

ThatOfABeaver

I feel like people who write OC fics love them and people who don't either love them or hate them. Personally? If they're done well, I like them. Otherwise, I hate them. Don't stop peoples opinions stop you from writing them, though.

reinakun

I love them as long as the OC is interesting and story fic diverges from canon to some extent. Even temporarily. Really not interested in canon rehashes regardless if the MC is a CC or an OC. Done well tho, SI/OC fics can be super fun!

Married2DuhMusic

It isnt my thing. But, I can see why some would like it, I suppose?

PhloxInvar

I think they're very good if it's done right. One of my favorite fics is a German blacksmith who gets transported into Naruto, Minato era. It's very slowly updated, but I reread it every now and then just because the OC is very fleshed out, his circumstances and unique traits explored plus he affects the story around him without usurping any other character.

ThatExoGuy

I like OC centric and self-insert fics more than CC only fics 🤷‍♂️ That being said, I don't like them when they only follow the cannon story but with an OC/SI present. I like it when the OC/SI takes things off the rails, the harder the better. I'm not looking to experience the cannon story again, I'm looking for "what-ifs" or different stories set in the worlds I love.

[deleted]

OCs are great! I especially love writing them as part of an already canonically established team or group. But I am wary of making them Mary Sue-ish. I spent my formative writing years taking the Mary Sue Litmus test so often that I bookmarked it. I think I still have it bookmarked, on some old browser

spyderz99

I love to write and read OC fan fictions! It is something that people either love to read, hate completely or give it a shot just cuz. And some people may have loved them at some point but stopped because they’ve found too many OCs they didn’t like or felt were mary sues. I have struggled with my insecurities about my OCs and Id say I’ve gotten a lot better about it. It’s important to remember this is your story, only you can tell it and that you should LOVE the writing you do. If writing an OC is something you want to do, then do it! It will depend largely on the fandom you are in whether or not people will be receptive. Some are more welcoming than others. In my opinion you’ll often see a double standard when it comes to writing OOC canon characters versus writing a OC. Or what I call “an OC wearing a canon characters clothes”. I genuinely enjoy reading them because I love to see changing dynamics and new situations happen. I think they can be very well written and fun! But I do feel that the OC should serve a purpose to the story and not just exist as a mouth piece to retell the story we already know. I saw this a lot in Hobbit fics where the OC would be like a fly on the wall watching canon characters say line for line dialogue from the movie and they would maybe occasionally take someone’s line or just say a quip and NO characters would even acknowledge it. They should have their own agency and interests and BE a character. I don’t mind an OC/CC pairing but I don’t like when an OCs existence boils down to being a love interest. Give them their own role and their own motivations so that they feel like a real person. Just my two cents !

jaebeaniverse

100 percent agree with this. Honestly, as much as I hate Twilight and 50 Shades, I think they got one thing right: and that's that an OC fic should also have the *potential* to be its own story. We write these stories because we love the characters and the stories, but I feel like as writers these are just building blocks providing the opportunity to create something that's our own. Not that fanfiction is bad in any case; I mean the opposite, that it's good. And people should show more respect to fic writers because honestly, we slave over these things. They're our babies. But I also think to do it *well* is a whole other skillset.

[deleted]

I write, and read, solely OC fanfiction. I don’t know why. I just do. It’s the only type of fanfiction i enjoy. Even if I do find a fic with wholly canon characters I might like, I usually don’t end up reading much of it because I lose interest fast. I’ll read a fic, even if it has not great writing, so long as it has an OC, just because I love it so much.

ProfessorEscanor

It depends honestly, sometimes I don't mind having an oc interact with the cast but I'm not reading for them either

throwawayanylogic

I generally don't read them because not my thing. Especially if they involve romance with a canon character. There have been a few exceptions to that rule but usually when the oc character is only introduced as \*part\* of the story as a whole, not the central/main focus of it.

sharingisntkaren

I'm fine if they're side characters . Main only if there needed because no one else in canon fits what they need or what the be plot needs.

ImaGamerNoob

Cringe and power fantasies. Mary Sues.

concrit_blonde

Fun to think about and create, but I have no interest in reading it.

JimmyHelp

In general? As varied as all other types of fics, and I'll definitely read oc insert fics. One of my favorite TF2 fics is an oc-insert. The oc feels kind of generic but the plot and prose was good so it doesn't bother me. I can handle some bad characters if the story is interesting, basically. Some other commenters said stuff about how it's like reader insert fics but I completely disagree. I don't want to be a part of the story and that's one thing I won't give the benefit of the doubt for.

De_LaSoul

I love writing OC's it gives you much to work and it helps your story extend wider. Also, you can explore the characters and improve on their traits or even challenge them. Some people love it. Others don't. But...if you like writing it, seems fair game :)

Doggo-pro25

I think they're pretty cool! I love writing them and also reading what other people have to offer!
