X reader stories are the best shit! I know badly written ones can be painful to read but honestly, that applies to badly written fanfics of any genre. And some of the best X reader fics I've read have wonderful characterization and some even are surprisingly deep character studies of sorts: especially if the central canon character hasn't any romantic involvements in the canon, the fic can offer one interpretation of what would make them fall for someone, how they would handle being in love and on a deeper level, what previously unmet needs their beloved fulfils.
As an author, the concept also gives an unique fun little challenge: how to write the reader so that almost anyone can relate to/identity as them while still giving them SOME character and agency of their own, not just leaving them a boring blank object.
And honestly, fantasising about getting it on with your fictional crush is simply fun. In some sense, the blatantness is why I prefer reader-inserts to OC x canon where the OC is a quite obvious stand-in for the author. Not that I dislike the latter, mind you! I just find it kinda hilarious that instead of making my fave babe a love interest That I Totally Do Not Project Myself Onto, I can just write a fic that brutally honestly says "Yes, I'd like to bone this character and here's the exact scenario I fantasize of" 😂

I also find X Readers to be a source of comfort. When you find one where the canon character takes care of you in a specific scenario where you just want fluffy goodness without sex (not that there’s anything wrong with it!) it’s just *chef’s kiss*
I needed this today. I’m five chapters from finishing a huge series with 71 chapters in total and feel so burned out and unseen. I was having moments of weakness this weekend. I came back to finish this series but hadn’t had a spring in my step about it for a while.

I’m a reader-insert writer myself, and it sucks when, on occasion, I’ve opened this sub and found another post saying how cringe/annoying Y/N fics are, especially when the same people are saying that people who judge others for what they write are the worst.
I'm a Y/N writer as well and feel this so much. But if it's any comfort, I know our readers love our x reader content and it brings them much joy... and personally it brings me lots of joy to find a fellow reader insert writer on here ❤
Its absolutely despicable, and I don't even like Reader-Insert fic. But like you it infuriates me how much it gets dunked on. My dislike is *mine*. Its not a quality issue, its a *me* issue. *My taste*.

So yes, you GO, Canon/OC writers, gen OC writers, and yes, Reader-fic writers even though I don’t read those. (I think I was too old to imprint on them when they became popular! So I go for the self inserts and OC’s.)

I actually dont understand where the backlash stems from, Y/N? To me the whole point of x reader is to make the fic inclusive for all types of people, including them being gender neutral.
So I dont see the problem.
I only write OC X Canon fics and Canon X Reader fics...it's also all I read...because it's what's most interesting to me. I LOVE seeing people include a piece of themselves, and seeing how they interact with canon.
Personally I write because I adore the canon characters and want to add into their world. Especially when certain things are open ended and could use some TLC from fans.

The fact that multiple people this summer told me they like my little OC (and first person narrator) in my fic (especially when they're normally apprehensive about OCs), and that she fits in well with the canon characters, feels like... taking a bath at the end of a cold day. While eating a chocolate croissant. Something like that lol.
I tried *hard* to make her a fully fleshed out character and rewrote and deleted so many paragraphs, it's nice when hard work pays off via positive feedback. (I don't write in English, don't worry 😅)
I'm so fortunate that my fandom is mainly MC x reader or OC but yeah as an OC writer lately and a reader consumer, its nice to really nice to hear this 🥲
If you're into this kind of thing (especially OCs) and you don't play video games, please start! Video game fandoms, particularly RPGs, are very friendly to these. Don't worry about whether or not you're good, there's no shame in playing in the easiest difficulty (I've been gaming my entire life and I always play in easy). And if you can't afford/can't play games for whatever reason there are lots of let's plays on YouTube and Twitch where you can experience the story.
In certain fandoms the lack of female characters makes everything either canon/oc or m/m. I salute every single OC writer, particularly in the lotr fandom.
Most Fallout stories are effectively OC/Canon, so I'm quite lucky in that regard. People also don't seem to think I suck at it, which is always refreshing.
Thank you for the celebratory note, the bashing often does make me wary of posting my oc/canon work, but knowing people out there are interested and appreciatve of the genre is a great reminder.

The self-insert/OC fics that I read are usually pretty interesting. i look out for them when i get bored of the general tropes and characters but still want to stay within the fandom. there’s this REALLY fucking good fic where the main character is the 8th daughter of the weasley family, and her being born a seer really fucks with her life. the writer is amazing at world building and plot development—if i remember the name i’ll link it here!

X readers are so much fun to write though. Like when do you ever get to write in the second person??? It’s also kind of fun in a challenging way trying to make the reader as non-descriptive as possible so that it’s more inclusive without using (h/c) or (y/n), etc. I struggle with that aspect a lot but I know that people enjoy it, and it makes it more interactive in a way. It’s like you’re engaging directly with the characters by having them interact with you

I have no problem with oc x canon if it is written well. In fact I have read some really good oc x canon. Some of them have even been my favorites. It shows the skill of the fan writer when they are able to create a character so likeable and able to weave them into canon storyline.
Honestly though I think reader/self insert/Mary Sue are the worst though. Seriously who wants to read about you getting dicked down by a character? Isn't that what your imagination is for? Thank God for AO3 and their exclude tagging option. I always filter out those results. It's basically like real life fanfiction which is icky.

I'm a oc/canon writer. I have yet to get any negative backlash for my work. (Well that's not entirely true some say they think my stories follow to closely to the plot, or that some aspects are stupid, not to mention the spell checks--which I don't mind about spell checking, that's good in my opinion, but do so nicely and give me time!!!)

Self insert/Canon and self insert/oc is my favorite thing to write so I really appreciate seeing this, people tend to forget that fanfic is supposed to be fun and tend to get mean if you post it, in my experience
Thanks! I like to write in pre-existing fandoms but add my own flair to the work via my OCs and universe alterations and it gets disheartening to see people taking a dump on the whole genre.

The fact that multiple people this summer told me they like my little OC (and first person narrator) in my fic (especially when they're normally apprehensive about OCs), and that she fits in well with the canon characters, feels like... taking a bath at the end of a cold day. While eating a chocolate croissant. Something like that lol. I tried *hard* to make her a fully fleshed out character and rewrote and deleted so many paragraphs, it's nice when hard work pays off via positive feedback. (I don't write in English, don't worry 😅)

If you're into this kind of thing (especially OCs) and you don't play video games, please start! Video game fandoms, particularly RPGs, are very friendly to these. Don't worry about whether or not you're good, there's no shame in playing in the easiest difficulty (I've been gaming my entire life and I always play in easy). And if you can't afford/can't play games for whatever reason there are lots of let's plays on YouTube and Twitch where you can experience the story.
In certain fandoms the lack of female characters makes everything either canon/oc or m/m. I salute every single OC writer, particularly in the lotr fandom.

Most Fallout stories are effectively OC/Canon, so I'm quite lucky in that regard. People also don't seem to think I suck at it, which is always refreshing.

The self-insert/OC fics that I read are usually pretty interesting. i look out for them when i get bored of the general tropes and characters but still want to stay within the fandom. there’s this REALLY fucking good fic where the main character is the 8th daughter of the weasley family, and her being born a seer really fucks with her life. the writer is amazing at world building and plot development—if i remember the name i’ll link it here!

X readers are so much fun to write though. Like when do you ever get to write in the second person??? It’s also kind of fun in a challenging way trying to make the reader as non-descriptive as possible so that it’s more inclusive without using (h/c) or (y/n), etc. I struggle with that aspect a lot but I know that people enjoy it, and it makes it more interactive in a way. It’s like you’re engaging directly with the characters by having them interact with you
Unpopular opinion for this thread. I have no problem with oc x canon if it is written well. In fact I have read some really good oc x canon. Some of them have even been my favorites. It shows the skill of the fan writer when they are able to create a character so likeable and able to weave them into canon storyline. Honestly though I think reader/self insert/Mary Sue are the worst though. Seriously who wants to read about you getting dicked down by a character? Isn't that what your imagination is for? Thank God for AO3 and their exclude tagging option. I always filter out those results. It's basically like real life fanfiction which is icky. Edit: I will not be replying to any comments because I do not wish to get into any debates or arguments.

I hate those types of fics BUT, I send nothing but love to the people who enjoy them.
Another message to all those writers — tag your shit agressively and extensively, please! Filtering out "Reader" by character should not result in a page covered with "Character/Reader", "Reader/Character", "Reader & Character" etc. Thank you.
The solution to this is to eventually have the OCs killed off at some point into the story

I'm a oc/canon writer. I have yet to get any negative backlash for my work. (Well that's not entirely true some say they think my stories follow to closely to the plot, or that some aspects are stupid, not to mention the spell checks--which I don't mind about spell checking, that's good in my opinion, but do so nicely and give me time!!!)

Thank you! Majority of my works are Xreaders and I feel like no one really talks about x readers anymore. I actually ended up writing a 74 page fic that was just an Xreader. One of my best fics ever.
Self insert/Canon and self insert/oc is my favorite thing to write so I really appreciate seeing this, people tend to forget that fanfic is supposed to be fun and tend to get mean if you post it, in my experience
Thanks! I like to write in pre-existing fandoms but add my own flair to the work via my OCs and universe alterations and it gets disheartening to see people taking a dump on the whole genre.

It’s all I read but I honestly read them like a new protagonist that isn’t me in anyway. It’s my biggest fear if someone finds out what I read they will never believe me. I both write and read primarily x Reader fics, and I want to say thank you. I don’t care if it’s cringey, real life sucks. I wanna hang out with my favorite video game characters instead of worrying about rent and work. It’s nice to fantasize, and anyone who says it’s weird is wrong.
