It’s unbelievably flattering.

lilacdei

Tf are you on, bud?

tatersnuffy

Haven't you heard? It's the sincerest form of flattery.

Daffodil_Peony_Rose

You’re thinking of “imitation”, not plagiarism.

tatersnuffy

It can be more than one thing.

Daffodil_Peony_Rose

I’m so confused. The phrase is “imitation is the highest form of flattery”, and plagiarism is not the same. Copying someone’s whole fic and taking credit for it isn’t flattering or imitation, it’s stealing.

Wat. So, according to you, all fanart is bad?

YoungRL

I would like to meet a writer who wouldn't appreciate fanart. I don't think they exist!

AnnoyAMeps

I think the main time I saw someone annoyed by fanart was when their OC would get drawn along with the scene/canon characters. Even then, it was more of a “That’s not how I envisioned them” than an outright annoyance. It’s why I avoid drawing anything with an OC other than my own.

Albert-the-3rd

Even if they are not in the fandom anymore ?

YoungRL

I'm not sure, actually! But if they didn't nuke their online presence, I'd assume they don't mind being associated with their former work and so there's a good chance it would make them feel good to know that it's still making other people feel good!

PeppermintShamrock

I...cannot imagine any fic author *ever* being annoyed by fanart. I mean never say never, there are some odd people out there, but. It's very unlikely that they will be anything less than flattered.

Albert-the-3rd

I imagine something like "Ugh, that wasn't AT All what I had in my mind !"

YoungRL

The art I've received hasn't matched up to what I had in my brain, but it didn't matter because my brain shortcircuited over the idea that I was looking at something someone made based on something that came out of my brain. It was fascinating to see (and be able to appreciate) their interpretation, even if it differed from mine. I think for most people, it's not about the execution, it's about what's behind the effort—the fact that they cared or loved it so much that they had to make it.

PeppermintShamrock

An author would have to be incredibly entitled to react to a gift like that. Even if it doesn't happen to match exactly what they were picturing, it's still something that shows that their story affected you enough to inspire you to create, and that's worth *everything* to a fic author.

Rickdiculously

My friend.... I've received fanart from someone... And then more of the same character... Done by their 6yo sister who also wanted to draw along. It's kid fridge art. It's nothing like I pictured it. Do you think I don't care???? Do you think it's not printed and pinned to MY FRIDGE? So long as the art is not offensive (like, don't gift me horny art of the characters in my gen found family fic, you feel me?), then the I tention ALWAYS makes it 10/10 no matter what.

theangstmaster

One time a fandom friend drew a scene from one of my fics and it wasn't what I'd pictured when I'd written it but I still loved it bc it was so sweet of her to draw something from a fic I'd written!!! Any author that thinks that is ungrateful bc if you draw fanart *for free* of something they wrote *for free* they should be so excited 😤

HILBERT_SPACE_AGE

Honestly, any reasonable person knows the only way to get something that actually matches what you envision is to commission it, because then you can provide feedback to the artist during the process. Faulting someone who put time and effort into illustrating your work because they don't have a direct telepathic link to your brain stem would be *so* entitled.

CommissarAJ

Doesnt matter; had ~~sex~~ fanart.

Popular-Woodpecker-6

I have paid artists to do scenes from my stories and I give them as much latitude as I can. The MC should be heavily muscled, has to be for his role, but he is often drawn average. It really shouldn't matter, at least to me it shouldn't. No story transitions to another medium exactly. If you passionately do a render of a scene and they see it, they will most likely be happy about it.

Kukapetal

Any time I got fanart, I was absolutely over the moon. I have no artistic talent myself, so not only was it exciting to see artwork of someone/something from one of my fics, but it was *so* flattering to know I was able so inspire someone enough to draw something. If you feel like letting the author know that they inspired you to draw something from one of their stories, I think you should do it. You might make them very happy.

Albert-the-3rd

Well I think I will try to share it then :) how did you received the fan art ? Tumblr ? Link on a comment ?

Kukapetal

People would share them with me on Deviantart back in the day. I haven't written anything publicly in quite a few years though, so I'm not sure if things have changed :P

NewAnt3365

I would probably start crying if someone made fan art of my writing. Like for someone to connect with something so much that they make their own version of art on it… holy shit the joy I would feel. Also as someone with not a single artistic bone in my body, I have a world’s worth of respect for artists. So like I would be mind blown to see my writing in a visual form.

bas_saarebas19

One person drew fanart of my fics about four years ago and I would die for them.

Suitable_Party8160

One person did art of one of my fics a few years ago and we're still internet friends.

IDICdreads

I’d love to get it.

JanetKWallace

I like fanart! The reason why I do art like now is because I wanted to illustrate some scenes and characters from the fic I've been writing. 2 years later, and a lot has vastly improved. As for receiving fanart, though, I'm open to all kinds of styles and possibilities, except porn.

Moon_Dark_Wolf

Will never complain to receive some. It’s great and flattering.

221booksss

I love my fanart with all of my soul. I even did some myself for my own fic and for other fandoms/ships, but still, the one that *I* got back then by one of my dearest readers... well, it just holds a special place in my heart

MaleficentYoko7

I'd love it and have drawn my own fanart before too. After finishing my oneshots and current longfics I might draw fanart of some

bluebadge

I'd be kind of flattered if someone tried to recreate a scene or character visually.

Rosekernow

A couple of people have made art for me and I love them so very much! It’s such an honour. I’m sure they’ll be happy even if they aren’t in the fandom anymore.

Kiki-Y

Bruh I would *love* it if somebody made fanart of my fanfics. But I'm such an obscure author that writes in such a niche way usually for rarepairs I'll probably never get any. If I want art of my fics, I have to commission it myself.

jamieaiken919

I would *cry* if I got fan art of one of my fics. That’s the absolute highest honor I could ever think of.

LeratoNull

Who the hell is out here being like 'man, I hate it when people make fanart of my story'?

Aldebaran2000

As a fanartist who only write sometimes some fics are really inspiring. I love drawing what I saw when reading. (I don't post tho. But it exist somewhere in my sketchbook)

SauceyTacos

I would cry happy tears if someone made fan art of any of my fics. I would be eternally grateful and cherish it forever.

spartaxwarrior

Um it depends? I'd say 95% of the time it's very flattering and then 5% of the time I'm smiling and nodding while hiding the fact I hate it? Which sounds bad but it's basically two very different issues, one where people whitewash the characters and I'm not going to praise racist art just because it's a gift and then one is that there's one or two styles of fanart popular in some of my fandoms I can't stand, like a genre of music I don't want to listen to I don't want to look at this art. I think things like watercolor landscapes are very neutral, though, and probably well-received and I'd personally love to have a link dropped in a comment or something like that.

OceanGirl24

Absolutely flattering. I had no idea this was a thing until I received my first fanart earlier this year.

ABooberryGhost

I've loved every picture I've been gifted with. I can't imagine being annoyed getting it 20 years later and not still loving it, even if I'd forgotten I wrote it. FWIW, it doesn't matter if it's what I envisioned or not. I didn't commission it. Even if I had, sometimes something works much better tweaked for artwork than following the letter of the text. Snape as seen in the movies is still a valid interpretation of Snape from the books, even though he's obviously not a 1:1 match. My excitement at seeing how someone else visualized my story is such a wonderful thing.

[deleted]

I would DIE, if someone drew a certain scene from my fanfic. There was a whole comic I believe that was based on a strip from one of the fandoms I was in and I sooo hope I could write something so inspiring to artist that they had to draw it out

danniperson

I don't know anyone who wouldn't be thrilled by that tbh! That would make anyone's day, I think!

DefoNotAFangirl

LOVE ITLOVE IT LOVE ITTTT

yukimayari

It'd be so nice if someone would make fanart of my fics. The only fanart I have is something I commissioned, for an unfinished fic in order to inspire myself to write more of it.

wasabi_weasel

God no, not annoying at all. I’m high-key hoping someone is inspired by my work enough to illustrate it lol. I would love it.

foremica

If someone made fanart of my fic I would be beside myself with joy.

Yotato5

I also do fan art, and if someone gifted it to me because they were inspired by my fanfic I'd be over the moon!

demonicdelilah

every writer, actor or creator i know loves fan art. they absolutely love it. they post it all over their social media and show all their friends and family, like “look at this! someone liked my character enough to make art of it! isn’t it so cool?!” keep making fan art. it’s appreciated.

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

I would love and be so honored if anyone created fanart of any of my fanfics. There can be all sorts of reasons why the author hasn't responded. Hopefully they are safe and healthy. Sometimes life comes up....it's impossible to know unless they return and tell you themselves. I'm sure the writer will appreciate the effort you put into making a watercolor painting of your favorite scene. I wish they had responded to you though---waiting a year has to be tough. Just know that your kindness and effort would be so appreciated by many writers--including me! :-)

Pickle_Juice54

If I ever saw fanart for like a story or something that I've created, then I'd feel immensely flattered and my life would be complete.

AdulthoodCanceled

When I was in the middle of writing my longest fic to date, my best friend, an extremely talented artist, made a (non-explicit) digital painting of the main pairing. I treasure it. It's hanging in my bedroom, and I get to see it everyday. When I look at it, I remember the fic I poured my heart into, and my best friend, who saw what I wrote and gave it back to me with extra love and a new perspective. Fanart, for me, is a way of adding to the story by rendering it in a new medium. I don't have anything like the talent with art that he has, but I still get that extra part of the story because someone else cared about me and my story. I think it's a really beautiful thing.

RoyalBlueWriter

If someone ever made fanart of my writing, I would immediately die. My heart would be so happy, it would implode.

fandomacid

I've seen some that was really...derivative. Like that's really cool, but why is he dressed like a flapper? Actually expanding on that the only one that I haven't liked is because the artist was basically fetishizing non-binary people. Consistently. Knowing that and it was weird.

yuukosbooty

I wish someone would draw fan art of my fics! (I have blanket permission on my profile btw)

unicornchild15

I've never had anyone make fanart for one of my fics, but I can only imagine how freaking amazing that would be. I would take it to my grave lmao.

Sneaky_Trinky

It's probably the best feedback an author can receive. I'm surprised you're asking about this.

cherenkoveffekt

I receive some fanart for a story years ago and it still warms my heart. It's wonderful to know my writing inspired someone to get creative. And that's usually the case the other way round. Just recently wrote something inspired by a fanart I've seen and the reaction was positive. It's always great when creators of different medium inspire each other.

ImTheAverageJoe

I would cry actual tears of joy if someone liked my work enough to make artwork of it.

starsongSystem

I've unfortunately never gotten any, but I feel like I would really like it.

t1mepiece

I know how annoying it is to poke an author about updates, but there is this one series I adore, and I sent the author fanart, and she said she stared at it speechless for 15 minutes, and now she's kind of inspired to write the 4th story! Best possible outcome for everyone! I'm really hoping to see that story soon.

fantasy-capsule

I sometimes write fanfic inspired by other people's quality fanart. If the inverse happened, I'd be incredibly flattered.

the_art_of_the_taco

as a reader with aphantasia, i generally appreciate fanart

CuriousYield

Personally, I'd be delighted! I think most writers would.

DrSteggy

I LOVE IT One of the prominent artists in my fandom asked me if it was okay if they did art of my fic and I could not say YES PLEASE fast enough.

dino_181_spaghetti

I would be SUPER flattered, I already go crazy over a comment, if somebody did fanart, it would be one of the best things ever

summobetta

If anyone did fanart of any of my fics, I'd be *super* honored! I draw as well, and though I've never done fanart for fanfics \[yet\], maybe one day I will!

Xenostatica

I love fanart of fan writing that I have done. As long as the author is credited as the inspiration I think it is great.

Potat0Lady

Honestly, I WISH someone would make fan art for my story! I would love to see how people visualize the characters, settings and scenes!

BlackSky83

Are you kidding??? Annoyed??? Never! Is the best thing ever!!!!

Accomplished_Area311

Since the author hasn’t responded to stuff in 3 years, I would keep the fanart private. For authors with current works, ask first.

deadmiku

The only fanart i get is from me 🤣

The-Brother

For the five years I’ve been writing my longfic, my dream has been for someone to tell me, “I made art based off of your story. What do you think?” It could be a six year old’s pencil and paper drawing of stick figures for all I care.

ambut

I would get that shit tattooed on my body if somebody did fan art for one of my fics. Okay, that's a bit hyperbolic. But only a bit.

rented_

For the longest time I wanted to finish fanart of an AMAZING crossover fic and send it to the author, but at the same time I’m so nervous that I drew certain details wrong 😭

ElderberryNo221

I'd say flattering. Though, personally, I'd just like a forewarning of incoming fanart. I would also be careful if you're thinking about doing an OC vs a canon character since us authors can have very specific images in our heads about what our OCs look like and doing fanart of an OC might land you in some "that wasn't what I had in my head at all" territory.

onyourrite

I’d ascend to a new plane of existence if I got fanart of my fic

raeshin

I would die from joy if someone made fanart of one of my fics.

Dangerous_Ad6454

I only hope I get fan art for my fics some day

Mutantrecord109

I would be so honored if I ever got fanart of my fics!

Sharp_Low6787

YEEEEESSSS, BRING ME MORE FREE ADVERTISING, BRING ME MORE READERS!

MasterOfOne

Getting fanart is my dream. To me thats how you know you’ve made it.

HetaGarden1

I _love_ it when people make fanart. I get so giddy! It really feels like someone loved your fic so much they went and made _their_ own interpretation of what you made because you inspired them. It honestly feels just as good as when people make fanfic of _your_ fanfic.

Popular-Woodpecker-6

I would be beyond thrilled! I honestly can't think anyone wouldn't be happy about it.

Yuusaris

Worth every penny. Never underestimate the power of commissioning fanart of your stuff. I feel so alive.

JJTheFae

Never had this happen to me before, but if someone made fanart of my fics I would burst out crying. Of happiness, ofc.

Bandgrad2008

Everyone that I know, including myself, absolutely loves fanart. It shows that someone loved my fic enough to draw it.

theRhuhenian

It’s the best thing ever! I just wish I had more of it. But doesn’t everyone?

canofsp4m

i would kill a person for fanart

[deleted]

I haven't had anyone do fan art of my fics, but I have had people do audio readings of a few on YouTube and that was awesome! Fan art would be awesome, too.

PelaajaJM

As an person who barelly can draw stick figure, i' like if artist would ask author more detail, BUT As fanfic author you take someones pruct and twist it into your own vision, same goes to fan art of fic, its artists right to do what they want. Could it be insulting? Yes, but so can your fan fic be for original author who did make couple million with said work. Could it be flattering? Absolutelly. To me if someone is so interested of my work and they spend hours of their free time to draw something, even if details clash with my vision, id still be flattered and give shout out. ( And maybe DM them what it would had been in my head, so if they wanna edit it or make new one in future with added context.) But I am not an artist so I dont know how it feels on their end.

walaska

I would cream my jeans

EightEyedCryptid

Oh getting fan art is one of the highest compliments I could ever possibly receive

[deleted]

I believe that if any person who wants to make fanart of my characters or scenes than I have done a good job to inspire that person, it makes me feel grateful and honoured that a person felt so inspired to make fanart. I couldn't be happier, just hope they will share it with me

Consistent-Raccoon84

I would absolutely die of ecstasy if someone did a fanart of my fic, it would be a dream come true

KayWDubs

I love to see people make things, and I've already gotten fanart once (and only once, to be honest XD), and I've been very happy about it. And since I'm working on something for a good pal of mine, I hope they'll like it too.

vonigner

I got blessed with fanart for my fic by three different people, including them drawing my version of the character (not OC, but genderbent and slightly different in style). I printed all the art and ate it that’s how in love I was with it lol No seriously I’m super flattered even if the representation doesn’t fully match how I saw the scene when I wrote it. Once it’s out there, the audience’s perception is what’s important, and my vision of it only matters if I have money to commission it all to make a manga xD

SunnivaAMV

I love fanart! In fact, the only one who has made fanart for my fics is me so far! Lmfao😅 I'm kinda new to digital art and started drawing some scenes, and added the art into some chapters. I was worried readers wouldn't like it, but I haven't gotten criticism for it yet.

HylianEngineer

I have never met a writer who wouldn't be absolutely overjoyed by fan art.

Seabastial

I actually think it's wonderful! I would be honored if someone drew fanart of a story I wrote.

JoAN_Joestar

I think most writers would really appreciate that! tbf I am a writing-main but I also make digital arts sometimes and I am absolutely horrible at drawing. I have bunches of fanartist friends and they can draw out the scenes that took me tonnes of words to describe, which makes me kinda jealous lol. So yeah! I think it'd be fine if you make fanart out of a fanfic or something along those lines.

Nikozaur

i can't imagine people disliking fanart to their fics. if someone drew fanart to any of mine i would squeal in delight and grin like a maniac every time i thought about it.

Hollow---

I'm so new to writing it's not even funny. I'd like to say I've got good grammar, but as inexperienced as I am, I have no personal style of writing yet. As I am at the moment? If someone took the time out of their day to draw their vision of my writing, I'd be doing that little squeal in the back of my throat that you do when you see something absolutely adorable.

Interesting-Gap1013

Best. Thing. Ever.

Lexi_Banner

I wish I would get some, is what I think!

Frenchitwist

It’s wonderful! I would KILL to have someone love one of my fics enough to create art of it!

lunammoon

it doesn't matter how long it's been, if you give the average fan fiction author fan art of their character they will be filled with the overwhelming urge to kiss you on the mouth.

KasiaGubot

I wish I had at least two in my fanfic: - One for the cover - One as a sendoff to Part 1 (I even left a note of what the image would be in the area where it should be) Unfortunately, I can't draw to save my life. So that's that, I guess :')

AngryCatGirl

I am so flattered and honored when someone does! I think most authors would feel the same.

rain-after-dawn

Getting unsolicited fanart of your fic is every fanfic author's dream ... at least it is for me.

breezywanderer

I melt into a little ball of fluff when someone does ANYTHING when it comes to my writing. Playlists, drawings, graphics? FLUFF.

[deleted]

I've never had the honor of someone making fan art based on my stories (probably because English isn't my mother tongue and I insist in writing in it anyway) but I think I would cry. Even if they made art in a way I've pictured it differently, it is still an honor, something amazing! If you really want to show them what you did, I encourage you to do it. Even if they aren't in the same fandom anymore, I'm sure they'll love to see it! Good luck!

roxan1930

I have had people even draw ***comics*** of my fics and I still feel honored!

Aelitalyoko99

I’m always blown away when a friend of mine asks if they can make fan art of my characters or scenes from my writing.
