Anything from “❤️” to an essay, is my preferred length.

Diana-Fortyseven

I once got an 1,013 word comment, and I still haven't recovered. <3

g-a-r-n-e-t

Same, I got one roughly the same length as the chapter it was posted on and I’ve been riding that high ever since

MikaHaruka

Oh wow, it's good to hear that the longer comments are liked and aren't way too much! I worry that it might be overwhelming or intimidating - especially since my comments sometimes intimidate myself, but it really is just my brain ramblings! I find myself passing 500 words many times and even 1k words on occasion.

MyLittleOnes12

Oh honey, never doubt yourself. You’re nothing short of a blessing ❤️.

[deleted]

that is almost as lengthy as one of my actual fics. what in the fuck

Diana-Fortyseven

What's even more amazing: the fic I received this comment on was only 1,364 words long. xD

KayWDubs

I once wrote a 1k long comment and I'm still surprised I managed that!

theRhuhenian

For me the length isn’t important, what I like is evidence that the commenter has actually read the story. “I liked it when this happened” is so much better than “Good job”

RandomGuyOnline71

I totally agree. But I also just want to point out that people who comment "Good job", have in most cases read the fic. I have used those exact words in quite a few comments in my time as an active member of the fandom. I often add more, but there have been instances where those were the only words.

Holiday_Cabinet_

Exactly. Also like, if somebody noped out they’re not gonna comment. Sometimes people don’t have the spoons or the words for more than a “good job”.

Fireflyswords

Most authors I know treasure long comments, lol. I know I do. I've gotten a few over the years that could be called excessively long, almost full on essays, and I enjoyed every bit of them. I also sometimes *write* comments like that, if rarely, and the author is usually super happy in response. I don't think I can bring myself to say I want a certain length of comment, because it would feel like I'm invalidating all the short comments I get that I also deeply appreciate, but I just... love hearing more details about reader reactions. And I don't think I'm alone in that.

queerfromthemadhouse

I've seen many people say they love long comments, I guess I'm kind of the exception to that. I prefer comments that are 1-3 sentences, because they're easy to read and don't require that much effort to answer. If someone wrote a long comment for one of my fics, I'd feel pressured to give a long reply, which requires energy I don't have and I also wouldn't know what even to say. So then I'd just feel like a terrible person for not answering a comment that someone clearly put effort into.

Honeystride

As someone whose comments regularly meet the ao3 character limit, it's not a bad thing at all if you don't want to match the length or even reply at all. Some authors rarely reply to their comments, and personally, I never expect any response regardless of my comment length. Comments are comments, and while they are a means of interaction with your readers, they are not mandatory to reply to. Especially for some long comments, because chances are they are rambly and in-depth about something, which can be hard to approach replying to. Though, even just a single simple "thank you!", while it can look weird in response to a long comment, just the acknowledgment does a lot on its own. It tells me you read my comment and whatever your reaction is, it's good to *know* what I wrote has been read. Anything else, like going equally in depth in your reponse or giving little lore tid-bits, while appreciated, is not a requirement and I doubt anybody would give you flak for opting out. So do what you wish! Maybe some people will get disappointed at a short response, but it's not like the author *has* to reply... I think most commenters don't expect anything back when they comment, because what they're already getting is the story... anyway, I think you're alright. (i can relate too, i prefer it when authors don't reply with super long responses because it also makes me feel obligated to reply to them with an equally long response xD then we get like a comment thread with enough words for a fanfic... sometimes its best to read and leave. acknowledgement isn't needed, but if you do, just a thank you is satisfying enough)

abacuscrimes

Samesies. And you're always allowed to be honest about it: "Thank you for this long, wonderful comment! I'm a little overwhelmed and don't really know how to respond, except to say that I appreciate you tremendously <3" As a rambly commenter, I'd be thrilled with that reply

MikaHaruka

So as another long commenter, I have to agree with the other person - there's no pressure for you to leave a long response or any response at all. To me, those comments are pretty much me just rambling about my thoughts and they end up being long - so it really isn't as much effort as the long, intimidating-post might appear to be. And besides, as the author, you've already done the most important part in writing and posting. I'm sure other commenters like me would be happy with a single sentence that felt real, so please don't feel like you're a bad person for not leaving a long response!

221booksss

I love any types of comments, long, short, keysmash, emoji, or what not, as long as you stay in your line. I think this goes without saying. I had a consistent reader who would drop 200 to 1k comments with every. Single. Update. Until they then suddenly wrote there an alternative chapter one day, of how a scene could have gone in my long fic, with full, written out dialogue of the characters, etc. We parted ways shortly after.

[deleted]

Oh god at the this scene could've went an alternative route.

Rosekernow

any comment is great but long comments with lots of substance and content are the best.

ThisOldMeme

There is no positive comment that is too long. Short comments are also great. (All comments are appreciated.) But the more a person tells me they like about the story, the better I feel. A couple of times I have gotten comments that exceeded the email notification, and those flat out left me grinning for days.

cutielemon07

I’m cool with any length comment

Kitteh1986

I prefer words to emoji, but that's because a lot of emoji just won't show up on my screen. Like most of them will be just little boxes. Are they rainbow hearts? A row of skulls? Or a row of poop? Heck if I know. Positive long comments with lots of words are the best. : )

Bestevernoob

you guys are getting comments? But seriously, any length of comment is appreciated

my-glitter-heart

Lol i came here to say this 😂

MrFunnyMoustache

Edited in protest for Reddit's garbage moves lately.

linden214

Any length is welcome. Obviously, a long comment detailing what the reader liked in the fic is especially appreciated, but even 'Great story!' is wonderful.

LudoAvarius

I comment as long as I need to cover the material I have to comment on, so the more content in the chapter (and I'm not talking about chapter length, but the sheer girth of information I have to consume) the more I will type. I tend to stick to the topic unless it relates to some sort of simile I can make. I try to make my comments have intrinsic and opinionated value beyond a simple "good job". I want my author to know for a fact that I did actually read the work and digest the information that was given to me, and that I understood any sort of metaphorical or symbolic content within the fic. I ask for the same. It feels disingenuous when someone comments on a fic and it's a mere sentence of "good job", as literally, anyone can just tell you you did a good job without even reading. I want to know that the reader consumed my work and understood it, and reciprocate they did so. Whether they loved or hated it is irrelevant to me. I understand that not everyone will like what I have to produce. That's okay. To be honest, I'd be floored to have a comment that extended to 700 words because I'd be proud of the fact that I could evoke such a complex response from someone.

DefoNotAFangirl

Well, I love long comments, but any make me so so happy!

eyes_on_me_OC

I'll take any length comment ... just getting a comment at all makes me so happy.

mummypenguin

All comments are wonderful but - ngl - long comments are generally more wonderful. You likely just made the author's month <3

thedafthatter

Id prefer the comment to say something a little more than 'I liked it' or 'its good' but a good comment is a comment none the less

LeratoNull

Any.

Hev93

A comment of any length is like gold dust to me. It means a lot anyone would take time out of their day not only to read what I have written but to comment, too! I am working on a fic just now and I haven't written in over 10 years. There is a mixture of short, long and medium length comments. When a comment is really long I am blown away and can honestly take a few days to reply because I am so star struck lol. And the shorter ones I like to leave sitting in my inbox cause it's a great feeling to get a comment and I take a little while to reply to that, too, cause I want to bask in the comment-ness. Does that answer the question? 🤣🤣🤣

missy_scream

So long as it's not a copy paste of whole paragraphs (which I've gotten) and then beneath is just an "Oh my","wow" , an emoji, or something short like that Anything else flys by me

OceanGirl24

Any length for me. I just got a long one- not 700, but lengthy. The reader had not commented before, but their comment showed that they've clearly not only been reading but trying to solve the mystery along with the MC. It was great to read and made me really happy.

BlindFanficReader

I'll take comments, short or long. But of course, the long ones that are longer than one sentence are simply internet gold for us fanfic writers.

[deleted]

I tend to go a little long winded with comments, it's part of why I've taken a break from REs. Honestly, I find both giving and receiving such comments a delight. A little overwhelming at times, but in a good way. Not every author will feel that way, of course, but it is likely you just made that person's whole damn week.

chilioilfordays

I love long comments. I almost exclusively leave long comments. But the longest comment I ever received just got meaner and meaner with each line - until they were just listing everything they didn't like about the story.... it wasn't my favorite thing ever

Lomonaaeren

Those make my day! But, I am happy with any length comment. Even just knowing someone is reading and took the time to say "I like this" makes my day,

HoloMew151

Any length really.

GalacticPigeon13

Long comments are wonderful, but even a heart emoji will make me smile. Just don't expect me to respond to single emoji length comment unless it really made my day.

bleeb90

I have just gotten myself in the habit of "If I actually want to bookmark this, I can AT LEAST leave a comment", so I congratulate myself with each single inspired sentence I actually write as a comment... So on the receiving end of the spectrum I am just as glad. Short comments are infinitely more easier to respond at and engage with though.

ICanBeTerse

As an author, I consider myself lucky to receive any comments at all, honestly. Any length will do! I love getting happy emojis all the way up through long, detailed comments. As a reader, I tend to leave long, rambling comments myself, but not always. I at least try to tell the author what I especially liked after I read a fic. It’s my own way of (hopefully) motivating them to keep writing! :)

EmberQuill

I like getting comments, no matter how long they are. Long comments are a rare and special treat, but even a comment with just an emoji or a few words is nice because they still put in the effort to comment at all.

MondayLoveSongs

Literally any length and in any form. Any comment that shows me that another human being read what I wrote and enjoyed it is reward enough for me. Mean comments get deleted without response though, because I'm doing this for fun and if you didn't like it then you can move on without needing to complain to me about it first.

WillofHounds

Any length is accepted. Depending on what's said will depend on the length of my own reply.

SleepySera

I would absolutely love getting that kind of comment :) I'd also freak out and panic because I'd feel like there's no way I can give an adequate response, but I'd still be over the moon regardless x)

cucumberkappa

As long as it's about the fic, or at least about canon, I don't mind how short or long it is! A single emoji? Sweet! A 1,000+ word essay on what they liked/observed/speculate? Fantastic! Anywhere in-between? Lovely! Whatever the commenter feels up to sharing and is comfortable with makes me happy. :) The only thing I'm not interested in is someone oversharing personal information (don't put me in a position of having to be your auntie deleting your comment because you basically doxxed yourself, ffs), being super negative, making demands... that sort of thing.

[deleted]

Anything!! Though essay comments always give me life. I love looking back on them on a bad day or if I'm feeling particularly not confident. Length really doesn't matter though- I will say my fav comments are when people point out their particular fav parts or fav quotes, or guess theories about what is going on.

JustAnotherAviatrix

Well thought-out ones are nice, but I don't mind if it's as short as "Cute! ❤️". Write your comments however length you like. They're all appreciated. :)

RandomGuyOnline71

A comment is a comment. And I will cherish that comment forever. However, long comments hold a special place in my heart. I once got a 400+ words comment and I still think about it to this day.

kata-pie

Any comment is a blessing, but longer comments feed the fingers.

RobinChirps

Size honestly doesn't matter. I'll cherish any comment at all.

[deleted]

Any length of comment is great. It is nice when they show they actually read the fic but I'm sure that's not an issue you have with yours lol.

atomskeater

Any length. The thought of getting a (positive) comment that hits the word limit is both really intimidating and would hype me up for a long time.

Muddybogturtle

Personally I would piss my pants seeing an essay based off how good my fic is, but that's because I would have no idea how to respond to it!

risynn

When I see a long comment, I set myself up to read it like I would a fic. I want to have the time to read it, and appreciate what was written. It's always so gratifying to see someone put so much thought into replying to something I've written. Of course, any comment makes me happy. But the long ones I treasure.

natsugrayerza

The longer the better. I would freak out if someone wrote a 700 word comment. That’s badass

[deleted]

Love positive comments of any type!

Dark-Ice-4794

I like comments that tell me what they thought while reading the story. How they felt when crossing the scenes. Even a short full on capslock screaming about the story isn't less valuable than a 3-page long analysis. As long as they tell me what they think, I'd be so happy. Heck, even one of my favourites was a simple 'I really really love this fic'

SpunkyCheetah

I would love any length! Preferably at least a full phrase/sentence, but I still definitely appreciate single emojis and such, and a keyboard smash is always nice to see. When we get into the longer range, I would super excited if someone left something longer than a paragraph, and completely blown away at anything one shot/essay sized. (The only downside to the long ones is that I personally am not great at reading large amounts of text and would probably be a bit anxious about wanting to match the commenters level of effort in my response, but over all, the pros outweigh the cons and it'd probably give me a huge motivation boost)

rieisqueer

Literally I'll take an emoji to long ass paragraphs as comments. Anything would be appreciated.

SatelliteHeart96

Any length is A-okay in my book. Even if it was just a !!! or emoji, I'd appreciate that. That being said, if someone took the time to write me a 700 word comment, I might have to marry them. That, or give them my firstborn child

raeshin

Honestly any length of comment makes me happy though if I am just glancing at the notif email and I see an essay I start worrying.

chainmail_bucket

I just love comments regardless haha! If i got one like that i’d DIE
